Talented five help Smackdown thrive
A couple weeks ago, I wrote that Smackdown’s big four – Edge, Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio – were largely responsible for the consistently high quality of the show. After watching Smackdown the past two Fridays, however, it’s apparent that the talented quartet has gained a fifth member – CM Punk.
Since winning the world heavyweight title two weeks ago, Punk has come across like a legitimate top guy. That can be attributed to his solid performances in the ring and on the microphone, but also to the fact that he isn’t being presented as a fluke world champion like he was during his first reign. An opportunist? Yes. But not a fluke.
Punk is perhaps the most compelling performer in wrestling at the moment. His character thinks of himself as a babyface, but he’s displaying subtle heel traits. In Punk’s mind, he hasn’t done anything outside the rules, so he isn’t turning on the fans, it’s the fans who are turning on him because his actions harmed one of their favorites, Jeff Hardy.
In addition to Smackdown’s fab five, the booking is a major reason for the show’s success. On Friday’s episode, the creative team did a nice job of furthering the Punk-Hardy and Jericho-Mysterio programs by intertwining them. Best of all, viewers were treated to three star-studded matches featuring the top five guys.
One of those matches pitted Edge against John Morrison, and judging by Morrison’s performance, there could be a sixth guy in the mix real soon. In fact, Jim Ross declared that “John Morrison will be a world champion some day.”
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
The finish to the Hardy-Jericho match worked on several levels. Having Mysterio jump out of the crowd and attack Jericho while disguised as a fan was a nice follow-up to Jericho doing the same thing to Mysterio three weeks ago. It led to Jericho getting counted out against Hardy, so the following was accomplished: Mysterio got revenge, Jericho suffered a loss without having to get pinned again, and Hardy scored a win over a major star heading into his title match against Punk. …
I also liked how the Punk-Mysterio match went down. Jericho, sitting at ringside doing commentary, interfered, and Punk took advantage of it to gain the victory. So Jericho one-upped Mysterio, and Punk again beat a fan favorite by being an opportunist. Hardy, meanwhile, came out to try to right the wrong by explaining what happened to the referee, but it was to no avail. …
In the verbal exchange between Punk and Hardy, the differences in their lifestyles were brought up without getting into specifics, which is probably a good thing since the free-spirited babyface is one Wellness Program violation away from termination, while the tweener/heel doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs. If WWE wanted to go there, Punk could bring up that he won the Money in the Bank match last year and eventually became champion while Hardy, who would have been the favorite to win that match, couldn’t compete because he got suspended. …
Morrison’s performance on the mic probably was his best yet, but there’s still room for improvement. He also had a good match with Edge. The story was that Edge didn’t consider Morrison to be in his league, but then Morrison pushed him to the limit before Edge escaped with a victory. Edge does not yet have a match at The Bash pay-per-view on June 28, so perhaps an Edge-Morrison bout will be added. …
Michelle McCool’s beat-down of Melina was well done, but I just don’t have any interest in a match between these two, who are scheduled to face each other in a women’s title bout at The Bash. I would much rather see Maryse defend the divas title against Mickie James at the pay-per-view.

Comments
Smackdown has been the best WWE show ever since the draft, which is surprising, given that it seemed like they gave up the most during the draft. I hope the ratings are reflecting that.
And I would love to see Maryse, period.

Wow it is really amazing watching Edge these days he reminds me of Ric Flair and his matches in the 80's where he always looks like he's gonna lose then finds a way to win to bad HHH never got that through his scull maybe more people would respect him. melina is crazy flexible the way she was bent back in that Full Nelson/camel Clutch move my spine was in pain just watching that but i was also intreaged about her flexibility hahahaha! it is amazing though how the Smackdown team seems to get things right and the raw team so wrong

I cracked up when I saw jericho pointing at mysterio and explaining to the ref what happened while rey was acting like a normal fan who hadn't done anything. xD

loved smackdown (as per usual)
thort hardy and jericho looked pretty tired in their match - read somewhere that on the upcoming commercial free raw that smackdown superstars are going to be featured also. Hope they dont make it a habit.isnt smackdown taped on a tuesday? itll be hard for the them to put on the match they have been doing if they have to compete at raw the day before...
that aside loved the show - think punk is gonna turn complete heel with a "i dint turn on the fans they turned on me" attitude.
any news on the hardy contract situation? I originally thort the bash was to be his last match.
loved loved loved jericho on commentary. he is just immense. best line of the night for me was when he called grisham and ross bafoons.
is shelton benjamin ever going to win a match??

Where do people get the idea that Canadians say "eh"? No one in my region of the country does. So far this year, I have overheard an "eh" maybe once. And one other thing: Tim Horton's runs out of table space long before they run out of donuts unless you go there at 2:00AM when they take everything off the racks.

"An opportunist? Yes. But not a fluke."
I'm not sure I see the difference.
Also, I'm not crazy about Rey Mysterio putting his mask on the line. It spoils the match.

I love cm punk I thing he is amazing wrestler and got great mic skills I hope does turn heel cause his promos were always better as heel in ring of honor full impact pro and Iwa mid-south he has the chance to become a mega star as a heel cause he can make fans hate him

Smackdown was excellent again, but one thing bugged me (which is a nitpick, I know, but hey.) Why was Hardy okay with winning by countout when Rey interfered, but not okay with Punk winning when Jericho interfered?
A little inconsistency there although I guess it could be explained by his disdain for CM Punk at the moment.
Other than that a great show, head and shoulders above Raw right now. I hate to say it but Raw probably ranks worse than TNA, ECW and Superstars right now in terms of watchability.

I know it's already been said many times but Edge vs Morrison was amazing. HHH take note - this is how you get your opponent over even though you get the win.
In fact, while it was a breakout performance from Morrison, this match made Edge look better than any of his 4 world title wins since Survivor Series. He showed how good he really was and won an excellent match clean.

You're forgetting a 6th member as to why Smackdown is so good. John Morrison had a really good match with Edge, really kept me on the edge of my chair. I think it was Jericho who said on Raw that Smackdown is the better brand and I believe that. I thought the Diva's match between Melina and Alicia was ok. Could have been better if Alicia had more experience in the ring. Seems like the short feud between Layla and Eve might be over but who cares. Glad Maria had a chance to be on tv some. I think her future probably will be as a ref for women's matches or a backstage interviewer. I'd rather see Maryse and Mickie also at the Bash. I can't stand Michele McCool. I'd only watch the match for Melina.
One thing that comes to mind Kevin is where does Edge fit in to any matches at the Bash? Would another Edge/Morrison match be added to the lineup?
Posted by: Dave | June 20, 2009 6:27 PM
Morrison-Edge was more than good. It was PPV quality. It was far better than any single match on the Raw side of things in a really long time.

Another cracking Smackdown. Great match between Edge and the Friday night delight. I think Chris Jericho is as good a heel as any in the WWE right now. Great in the ring, even better on the mic. Everybody involved in Smackdown right now deserves a big pat on the back.

When is Shawn Michaels coming back?
What are the chances of him having a program with Randy Orton? On paper it seems like that would have a lot of potential.

Smackdown is absolutely the best of the three shows. Maybe Trump will bring in some good writers with him on Monday, Raw would benefit from some good writing for a change. Maybe at next year's draft Vince will add the writers to the mix. Raw would benefit more from better writing than The Miz and HHH coming on board.

why all the comments against hhh. people seem to find anything wrong with this guy even without any real justification. HHH can get people over regardless of victory or defeat. Look at Jeff. He was better for having lost to hhh last year.
they should keep morrison away from the mic and play to his strengths.
Punk as always is awesome. As are jericho and jeff. Great stuff. Unfortunately, smackdown is on a crappy night on a terrible network.

An opportunist and a fluke can be the same thing, but they don't have to be. An opportunist takes a shortcut to victory, but would have a chance to get his hand raised even without using questionable tactics. A fluke, by contrast, can't win without some form of help. A fluke is probably an opportunist, but an opportunist, isn't necessarily a fluke. With Punk having cleanly defeated Edge, Jericho, and Umaga in recent matches, it's no stretch to say that he could do the same to Jeff Hardy. One year ago, it would have indeed been a stretch.

Wrestling aside for a moment. I'd like to use this opportunity to wish Mr Kevin Eck a Happy Father's Day. Thanks for all the hard work.
Chris
RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks. Likewise to you and all the other fathers out there.

Anyone notice that they edited the last part of Jericho's comments while Mysterio was in the ring? It was clearly a dubbed over Jericho.

Weren't Layla and Eve fueding last week? They seemed to be having a laugh with Maria backstage...
Another quality episode...Edge Morrison fued? Sounds good to me.

Dolph Ziggler's new entrance theme made me think of Mr. Perfect... and then the DQ finish of Eddie Guerrero... What's next? Crippler Crossface?
Otherwise, awesome Smackdown. Jericho's still the best in the show.

"why all the comments against hhh"
I have seen only two comments against HHH under this entry, and both of them make the same, valid point: too often, HHH does nothing to make young, up-and-coming talent look good. Was Cody Rhodes elevated in anyone's eyes when Trips manhandled him like a sack of potatos? By contrast, John Cena let Jack Swagger look like his equal - or close to it - in their match, and Batista did the same for Ted DiBiase. On Smackdown, Edge helped Morrison look like a future megastar. HHH's matches with Jeff Hardy don't fit in with these examples, for Jeff was already in Smackdown's main events when those two had their program.

Loved Smackdown and i am excited about John Morrison's potential but i wish the writers would just leave poor Vickie alone, JM calling her abig fat pig was so unnecessary and made it all feel very awkward.

Who's more orange - Michelle McCool, the Undertaker or Shawn Michaels? WWE needs to add UV exposure testing to their wellness policy soon.
Smackdown is amazing - glad I have DVR or I'd never see it though. Any chance of moving the show to Wednesday or Thursday nights in the future?
Kev - you think John Morrison is the odds on favorite to win Money in the Bank this year? I know it's way early to predict something like that, but for the sake of argument I'd say he is a slight favorite over Matt Hardy, Miz, MVP and Jack Swagger (I WOULD HOPE that Christian is a major player already by that time or I'd say he is the favorite, but you know good ole payback Vince....).

No more Michelle McCool on the mike. Please. Her voice could break glass. I'd heard she was bad on the mike but seeing is believing.
Also, enough with Ziggler and Khali...move Ziggler on to something better.
I'm getting tired of commentators saying that John Morrison is the next main event. Not that I'm disagreeing but let the ring performance and crowd reaction speak for itself. The Canadian accent portion of the promo was a little weak but I liked that Morrison stood up to Edge and held his own.

Hey Kev,
I have been reading your blog religiously for the past several and I honestly think its the best wrestling blog out there. So keep up the good work man!!
On a side note, once he's done with Rey who do you think Jericho going to enter into a program with? I for one am already drooling at the prospect of a potentially long drawn out program b/w Jericho and Taker (once he's back of course) leading up to Wrestlemania. I think those two together would be pure gold. What are your thoughts on the matter?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't know about a Mania match, but I could definitely see a Jericho-Taker program at some point.

Christopher,
I grew up in Buffalo and had many contacts with folks from southern Ontario. In that region of Canada, they add "eh" to the end of sentences quite a bit. "It's a nice day, eh?" is a very typical sentence.

Thanks for the information, Bob. I am from western Canada, Saskatchewan to be exact, and I have been to Ontario only once, so I'll take your word for what is said there.

Morrison is the best in the business today. He still has room to improve on the mic, but his in-ring ability is unmatched, and he's just getting better. He and Melina are the reason I got back into wrestling (in '07) after ten years.

well seeing as the gts is punks only real 123 move...and hardy can eat it... i dont think cm punk can beat hardy... hardy is one of the greatest...but dont take my word for it...let his victorys over hhh, edge, undertaker, jericho and all other main event superstars speak for them selves
