Samoa Joe sells out on TNA Impact, but I’m not buying
The performances by Sting and Kevin Nash during the closing segment of Thursday night’s TNA Impact involving The Main Event Mafia were so good that they almost made up for a preposterous story line. Almost.
The explanation that TNA came up with for Samoa Joe’s heel turn at last Sunday’s Slammiversary pay-per-view was that he did it for the money (Jenna Morasca footed the bill, apparently).
Kurt Angle cut a promo early in the show in which he tried his best to make sense out of nonsense. The gist of it was that the MEM members realized they couldn’t beat Joe, so they paid him a lot of money to join them. He said the scheme had been in motion for quite a while. What about Joe brutalizing Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and Booker T., you ask? Angle said it was all part of the plan to throw people off (I didn’t realize anyone suspected Joe was joining the MEM).
Angle also said that if you don’t get it, “you’re a moron.” Well, I guess that makes me one, because I still wasn’t convinced that Joe’s turn was anything other than an ill-conceived, last-minute swerve. If I’m wrong and it actually was the plan all along, then that’s actually worse, because it shows that the creative team has no concept of how to book a swerve that isn’t devoid of logic.
Despite the angle’s flaws, however, some good has come out of it, namely the fact that the MEM finally turned on Sting (unless that too was part of an even larger plan to fool us morons). Plus, it looks as if Matt Morgan is now in the MEM, although that wasn’t made clear.
The highlight of Thursday’s episode undoubtedly was Sting’s confrontation with the MEM at the end of the show. Sting said that Angle, Steiner and Booker turning on him wasn’t a surprise, but he expected more from Nash. That was actually kind of funny since Sting and Nash have gone back and forth between being enemies and friends over the years, not to mention the fact that Nash has a reputation in real life for being a manipulator.
That aside, Sting and Nash both cut tremendous promos. It perhaps was the best of Nash’s career, as he explained to Sting why he would always choose business over friendship. It built to Sting handing Nash a bat and turning his back, but Sting had a second bat concealed and was ready when Nash went to attack him.
It occurred to me as I was watching this angle that it would have been so much better had Samoa Joe not been involved. If the goal of the story line was to get Sting out of the MEM, the creative team should just have had Angle, upset that he lost his role as MEM leader, enlist Morgan to take out Sting with the rest of the Mafia’s help. It would have accomplished the goal and created a potential new star in Morgan. Most of all, it makes sense.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
It had been more than a year since Angle’s last TNA world title reign, so I agree that it was time to put the belt back on him. With Angle holding the gold, TNA can make a strong case that it has the best world champion in any promotion. …
How is it that Angle has it in his contract that he gets to choose his opponent at the next pay-per-view? If that’s the case, why wouldn’t he just pick Shark Boy or Cody Deaner? I’m also confused as to how Angle seemingly has as much if not more power than executive shareholder Mick Foley, who seemingly has as much if not more power than TNA founder Jeff Jarrett. By the way, is TNA management director Jim Cornette even still in the company? …
Speaking of Foley, after playing an insincere heel for a couple months, he came off as a total babyface early in the show, but then acted like a heel again the rest of the show. Perhaps it’s his split-personality disorder acting up again. It must be contagious, because Beer Money’s Robert Roode and James Storm seem to have a case of it as well. …
Just wondering: Why was Joe still wearing his regular costume instead of a suit and tie or an MEM sweat suit? And were Steiner’s frequent references in the past to Joe being a “fat [expletive]” all part of the MEM’s elaborate ruse? …
Steiner wasted little time in finding another plump wrestler to taunt. He told Brother Ray that he had an “overactive pituitary gland” and also dared him to show his abs. Now that was funny. …
I was surprised that Steiner pinned Roode so cleanly in their singles match. I don’t agree with that decision. …
Booker referred to Team 3-D as The Dudleys in his promo. That infringes on WWE’s copyright, but, fortunately for TNA, most people probably couldn’t understood a word he was saying anyway. …
I’m wondering if there is going to be some sort of angle involving Earl Hebner. He was punched in the face by Jarrett recently, and Thursday he got shards of glass in his eye after Booker smashed a beer bottle over Storm’s head. …
The opening match between Brother Ray and Brutus Magnus got the show off to an energetic start. …
Daffney is an awesome character, but she would be even better if TNA let her win a bit more often. I also didn't see the point to having her get slammed into thumbtacks again. I can understand doing it at the pay-per-view last Sunday, but why subject her to that in a throwaway match on TV? ...
I think Lauren started a new catchphrase: “Are you OK?! Are you OK?!” …
It may not have been intentional, but Don West had the funniest line of the night after it was announced that Sharmell and Morasca would be wrestling at the Victory Road pay-per-view on July 19: “I think we all want to see that!”

Kev, ain't it fun pointing out pro wrestlings plot inconsistencies? Especially when you know who's responsible?
In what other business could anybody not just get away with such nonsense but have nonsense make you successful?
I think that chaos is part of pro wrestlings appeal. If this stuff unfolded in an orderly manner or even made a lot of sense, I doubt it would last as long as it has.

So did Vince McMahon on Monday night. He played heel to Trump's babyface, and then moments later played face to Orton's heel backstage, soliciting a crowd pop by announcing the PPV match.
RESPONSE FROM KE: True. But it would have made less sense if McMahon had suddenty forgotten that Orton tried to take out him and his entire family.

I seem to remember a similar angle developing with Samoa Joe in cahoots with his opponent during the TNA Impact! video game's career mode.

Joe's new theme music is awesome. Dale Oliver is so hit or miss (mostly the latter). Daffney's theme doesn't fit her in my opinion. She should just use raven's music.
Is Dr. Stevie still a wrestler by the way? Must be nice to get paid to not bump. His tack-back stunt must be what affords him all his apple gadgets. (@michaelmanna on twitter)

Who was that guy that came out to check on Rhino after Eric Young hit him ? I didn't quitee understand that part, was he a staff dude or some other wrestler? Rhino basically shoved him into Lauren, so I wonder if Abyss was watching...

AMC, i disagree with you 100 percent. I feel that plot inconsistencies and illogical story lines were the reason for WWE's downfall from the Attitude Era, and have long alienated viewers from ever going back to the product.
Anyone older than 20 is not going to tune into pro wrestling unless they've been a fan of it for awhile. I know most of my friends have stopped watching, simply because they feel pro wrestling is just garbage and makes no sense. Which is why WWE are playing it smart, by appealing to a younger audience, and getting them hooked.

Its the first time i must disgree a litell bit.
To much cheritisisem
While you right on most of the things but despite that i just lovvvvvvvvvvve it.

1. Joes new look and the change in the charcter is intersting and fun to look at - now when sting is finelly gone the formalety of the "resspect" is changed. The suits dosent importent its a pure heel stable.
2. Beer money are so over in the impact zone its great!!. I didnt like the W of stiner.
Its time for beer money to bit the mafia clean and after thet to estblish thire name by wininig 3d agin - super clean.
3. Aj VS Joe at bound 4 glory - they must bild this match.
I hope we wont see sting leading aj and the daniels cz that whould be really stupid now.
Now whan sting is out its time 4 the mafia to put young tna talents over
The storyling of yung is kinnda intersthing.

TNA is not successful. The only reason they've survived is because of Panda Energy dumping a ton of money into the company so Dixie Carter won't be sad.
They earn zero money on their house shows, merch, or PPV sales.

This feels like a bad version of the later NWO story lines. I think this hurts Joe in the long run.
If Angle was in charge of the MEM all this time, what exactly did he put up at Sacrifice and why was Sting such an idiot to believe him?

I think the reason that the TNA womens division is so much better thans WWE's is that they let characters develop more and they all have a different flavor to them. Kinda like WWE had with Trish and Lita at their prime.
And yeah, I'm a huge Daffney mark.

The guy at the end of the Rhino segment was the Navy guy he's been training. That illustrates one of the biggest problems I think TNA has. They do have a decent amount of talent, but with just two hours each week, some story lines are only worked into the show every few weeks. Just too much going on for the limited amount of air time they have.

Kevin I have read you post and I respect you opinion on pro wrestling. I have an idea about what tna should have done with Joe and I would like your thoughts. The only way tna could have saved this HORRIBLE swerve is by doing two things.
First just like you when I was done reading the recent PPV results I thought have Kurt Angle turn on the MEM and join Joe's nation of violence. The reasons you gave were perfect plus adding EY and Matt Morgan to the group was gold.
Now on to the bigger problem which is Joe giving the title away. TNA could have turned this into a great opportunity to get Joe over as a great heel. Joe should have came out on impact and said there is a little known secret that I am injured and will require surgery. So instead of winning the title and having to turn around in forfeit it i thought to myself who is worthy to be champ, who is as good Joe and that one man is Kurt Angle. So I used KOTM to make him champ.
Joe would then proceed to shoot down every one in the KOTM match. JJ was only in the main event because he owns the company etc, bash AJ really hard (setting AJ up to be the face to save the company) by saying AJ only beat bums to when his World Championships and is beyond over rated. That leaves Mick Foley which Joe would go on about the fact that a over the hill washed up reject from another company(don't say wwe) will never win the TNA championship in his nation of violence.
Joe would then put Angle over by stating he is the second best wrestler in the world behind himself and start talking about how he is in his prime and go over his accomplishments.
Joe would then tell every in the impact zone that when he recovers from his surgery he will destroy who ever is carrying the TNA championship and carry it like a man not defend it once every few months like Foley.
Sting would come out and interrupt Joe they could exchange words and Joe would tell sting at BFG he is going to retire his ass if Mattt Morgan does not first. Have Morgan attack sting and declare his allegiance to Joes Nation of Violence.
Joe would spend the next few months leading up to BFG as a heel manger. He and Kurt would get Matt Morgan over.
Joe retires Sting at BFG.
PS Angle would lose the TNA belt to AJ Styles in a one hour Iron Man Match at BFG. Matt Morgan would retire JJ( I can dream) This would make TNA 3 huge and young stars going forward. Sorry It was long but please let me know what you and all the other fans think.

I can't believe that you think that anything Vince Russo would come up with would make sense. I have to agree with Don West though, I'd rather see Sharmell and Morasca than either Russo or David Arquette wrestle for the title. Another great Russo idea that made a lot of sense.

This is starting to look like what went wrong with the NWO. The Mafia are supposed to be the Elite, the established veterans. They are supposed to be the best of the best, now they have to buy people because they can't beat them??
Now they add Joe (stupid move unless this is a swerve within a swerve), Morgan (isn't Nash supposed to be the big man in the Mafia?). Who else are they going to add? Are they just going to add people when they can't win? Then what's they point of claiming they're the best, the elite? It just makes them seem like they can't keep their place at the top.
This may have an out but it looks like the creative staff is going to goof this one up too. They need to stop drinking the kool-aid and develop a storyline that actually makes sense.

Jon,
Good points!

Well we called it Kevin, that your idea to resolve this muck was WAY too complicated for TNA writers to think of.
Nash, Bubba, Raven and Foley should b teaching the up and comers how to cut promos.... The AJ one with Joe was just sad...
Am I the only one who wishes that we had a daffney vs roxxi no holds barred match on tv?
Damn big business....

The whole Main Event Mafia storyline with Angle and Joe just sucks. Fine, they wanted some silly mark-out moment at a PPV. If that's the case, do what the WWE does and manage to avoid having Joe HIT ANGLE WITH A LADDER during the King of the Mountain match. Do some storytelling in the ring - Joe can't get his hands on Angle throughout - instead of just throwing a twist in at the end.

"The gist of it was that the MEM members realized they couldn’t beat Joe, so they paid him a lot of money to join them."
Ever since the wrestling world adopted Kevin "I do it for the money" Nash's attitude towards heel turns, it lost its emotional premise (usually jealousy) and now seems best handled by lawyers working out the fine details of the contract for the switch of allegiance.
Posted by: Bring back the WWWF | June 28, 2009 10:22 AM
Daniel's post was completely on the mark. I too thought Angle should break off from the MEM led by Sting and start a group with Joe after Joe explained he was injured on TV (and thus willing to relinquish a title win).
"Bring back the WWWF" also makes a good point about the state of heel turns in wrestling. Except for CM Punk, how many heels have a legitimate, emotional reason for their actions?
I agree with you, the final segment was great. Joe being all about the money was not a good rationale, but at least Nash saved it a little by saying they couldn't beat him so they bought him. They really should have said that they only bought off Samoa Joe just before Slammiversary so that it puts Joe over as a threat.

is it me or does Somoa Joe not look like he belongs with MEM A J looks more like he could fit in Logic would fit in if A j jioned and did the swerve until umanga comes in Sept then they bring him in to stop Joe and then A j turns on them like he is a mole then wins the Title from Angle.
Posted by: frank from dundalk | June 29, 2009 12:16 AM
Joe is gonna destroy the MEM from the inside. He's a mole. He'll take down the Mafia and have all of Jenna's money (cough, cough) in the process.
