WWE Superstars falls short

When it was announced that Thursday’s episode of WWE Superstars was going to be headlined by a match between The Big Show and Hornswoggle, my expectations for the show were immediately lowered.

The novelty of a giant taking on a leprechaun just doesn’t do a lot for me. I’d much rather see a competitive main event.

The “match” went just as I thought it would – well, almost.

I figured that after Big Show tossed the little guy around for a bit, John Cena – Big Show’s opponent at Sunday’s Judgment Day pay-per-view – would make the save and run off Big Show before he could deliver the knockout blow.

Sure enough, Big Show had Hornswoggle set up for the big punch, and then right on cue, out to save the day came … Goldust.

Goldust?

The crowd didn’t exactly go wild. And Goldust didn’t exactly save the day, either, so it made for a pretty flat ending to the show.

The bright spot, however, is that this could be the start to a Goldust-Hornswoggle comedy act. There’s a lot of potential for laughs with that duo.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

Rey Mysterio and Shelton Benjamin had a really good match. If pure athletic ability was all it took to be WWE champion, Benjamin would have had multiple reigns by now. …

With John Morrison doing guest commentary during the Mysterio-Benjamin match, I would have bet anything that Morrison’s interference would have led to Benjamin losing, since Benjamin had cost Morrison his match against Chris Jericho last week. I’m guessing a lot of viewers were thinking the same thing, so it was a pleasant surprise that Morrison was not involved at all in the finish. …

Speaking of Morrison, his performance on the mic was adequate at best. He seemed to be trying too hard to be a polite babyface, and that’s not going to get him over. He needs to maintain the cocky, sarcastic attitude that he had as a heel. The only thing that should change is who his opponents are.

That entire hour is garbage programming. As far as your bright spot, it was more like a brown spot.

I agree that Morrison should stay cocky.
Do you think it hurt Shelton loosing to Rey clean instead of Morrison coming in? I think that would boost their rivalry.

I think most of us were expecting Cena (& Morrison) interference. I got the impression that they decided both needed swerves instead...

Is this show really necessary?

Ya think?

Yuck yuck!

Morrison's face persona at the mike did get my attention based on its contrast to his prior heel persona, so I think that worked just fine for now.

Tossing too many sarcastic comments around at the get go might not be the way to turn. I think it will come over time from Morrison though.

When will Mark HEnry learn how to put his opponents away earlly on while he physically dominates them rather than wait and let them catch him by surprise?

Oh well, this is pro wrestling. Can't expect things to make too much sense now can one?

I agree Kevin. Hornswaggle/Big Show were nothing but 2 freaks of nature. Goldust was the 3rd freak so what a lousy ending. I enjoyed Rey Mysterio/Shelton Benjamin. I thought for sure John Morrison would interferred in some way. But he waited til the end and landed 1 punch to knock Shelton to the floor. But overall it wasn't to good of a show. TNA wasn't as good either ending a not to good night of wrestling.

Wow a main event between Big Show and Hornswoggle. Sounds like I'm really missing out on a great show.

John Morrison has been in the WWE long enough that we forget that wrestling fans first came to know him as John Hennigan on Tough Enough.

Given what became of Maven Huffman, Christopher Nowinski, Nidia, Linda Miles and Daniel Puder it is amazing how far Morrison has come.

If Morrison has trouble getting over with the fans as a face the WWE could work it in such a way that Morrison could remind them of his beginnings and how he had to earn the respect of people in the locker room.

I've also heard that Morrison is genuinely nice person away from the ring. It could be we're probably seeing more of John Hennigan than we are of John Morrison, babyface.

It's beyond me why WWE releases promising young talent while keeping Goldust on the roster. He's a legend (albeit not an impressive one) and I could see the argument if they were actually using him, but they keep him on ice and then wheel him out every few months, randomly, and then act like everybody should know or care what he's about.

If you're not going to invest the time to keep his character relevant *at all*, then at least spend the money letting some kid pay dues jobbing on Raw or Smackdown. I would honestly rather see Super Crazy than Goldust, at this point.

Two words Kevin . - OVER SATURATION -

"Is this show really necessary?"

How much on TV is really necessary? As long as it gets enough ratings to make a profit for both WGN and WWE it will be aired. And don't forget, WGN has a history with the Chicago Cubs so they know all about making a profit with mediocrity -- at least prior to the last three years.

I was shocked to see Goldust! I was almost certain Cena or Finlay would run out, it was a pleasant surprise as I like Goldust. But it was a pointless match that does nothing to build any hype for Cena/Big Show at Judgement Day. I don't really care to see any Goldust and Hornswoggle comedy though, as RAW already has it's "comedy" right now with that crappy Santina junk. But think about it, we'll have Santino (after his current storyline is finally over), Jillian with her singing, Festus, and Hornswoggle. It's been a few years since Goldust has done much in the comedy department, and really RAW doesn't need any more sideshow acts unless maybe they team Goldust & Santino and make them a credible tag team that is comedic, like Booker T & Goldust was.
