WWE releases Mr. Kennedy

Mr. Kennedy, a guy who at one time was on the fast track to becoming a world champion in WWE, has been released, the company announced on its Web site earlier this evening.

There are no details as to why Kennedy was let go, but the most obvious assumption is that it’s due to his inability to stay healthy. After being out nine months with a dislocated shoulder, Kennedy returned to TV Monday in a 10-man tag team match on Raw and reportedly suffered a wrist injury during the match.

It was the latest in a string of injuries for Kennedy, 33, during his four years in WWE. Two months after winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23 in 2007 – which most likely would have led to a world title run – he suffered a torn triceps.

When I asked Kennedy about his history of injuries in an interview this past January, he dismissed the suggestion that he was injury prone.

“You know, I’ve heard all the ‘Oh, Kennedy’s injury prone’ and all that stuff, but there are certain things that happen, and if you knew the whole story you wouldn’t necessarily think that,” he said. “I’ve just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. But it is frustrating. I had the Money in the Bank and was on the way to becoming a world champion and then injury struck. And it’s just been one thing after the other, but I just keep my head up. I was told a long time ago that if you have talent you cannot be denied and eventually good things will happen.”

During his relatively short time in wrestling, Kennedy has been somewhat of a controversial figure. Not long after he was adamant in a 2007 interview that he had not taken steroids since he signed with WWE, Kennedy was one of 10 WWE wrestlers suspended 30 days for violating the company’s Wellness Policy. The suspension came after he was among the wrestlers named in a report by Sports Illustrated as having received steroids and/or human growth hormone through Signature Pharmacy, a Florida pharmaceutical company that was under investigation.

Kennedy is definitely right about one thing, though: He has talent, and I will be shocked if he doesn’t end up in TNA.

Man, what a crummy situation. He injures himself a few months after debuting in WWE, he gets injured a month or so after winning MITB, he gets injured on Monday, he gets fired today, and now he'll have to go to TNA. Bummer.

Vince has no shame. This guy has talent, but , oh well, guess he will go back to the grinder and churn out another wrestler to replace him.

They had no choice plus he really wasn't even that talented on the microphone, he only had one cache phrase.

what's the address of Signature Pharmacy ?

I am not trying to sound mean, but Mr. Kennedy had missed so much time each year that not much will change in his absence.

His best stint of healthiness in WWE was the middle of 2006 to the middle of 2007 when he consistently had solid matches with a long list of people on Smackdown, most notably, Matt Hardy. At least one of those Hardy matches was match-of-the-year material, at least in my opinion.

After that, however, the stars went out of alignment.

Sucks for sure. I'm not sure how well he'd fair in TNA though without his name. I guess you could argue in court that Ken Kennedy is just a play off his first name Kenneth.

But who knows. Ken can cut a very good promo. If he can stay healthy in TNA then he should be fine and I bet 3 years down the line he'll be right back in WWE (If TNA hasn't reach greater heights by then.)

I was never much of a kennedy fan, but he definitely had potential to be a major player in the biz. This might be the best thing to happen for him. wwe creative team is stale and Raw is what you call a hot mess. So by the end of summer he'll probably be TNA Champ

Dropping Randy Orton on his surgically repaired shoulder probably wasn't a great career move.

TNA should just sub Kennedy in for Shane Douglas in the feud with Daniels.

Truth be told, never saw what was so amazing about Mr. Kennedy. His promo skills were rarely above average, the "Mic Check" was weak (or at least looked weak), and why he was allowed to do that extremely long & drawn out entrance was beyond me.

If he ever comes back he'll be stuck in mid-card hell, or a foil for a heel that never wins (Batista now-a-days).

Vince McMahon could go to hell along with the promotion he's running. Kennedy is better than you and will show that in TNA!

Injury prone or not, it's a pretty drastic move.

Especially when you consider Mr. Kennedy was part of the main event on RAW less than seven days ago.

Why have Kennedy confront Orton on RAW and then drop him from the company before the next episode airs? That certainly couldn't have been the plan.

One has to think it is more than just being injury prone. Surely there would be some other role he could play in the company if the only issue were injuries. Something else is going on here.

Kennedy in TNA would be awesome.

If used correctly, he'd be main event level talent there.

Hopefully there isn't the usual '90-day' factor involved in his release and he'll be able to work for TNA soon.

Injuries didn't seem to be a problem when Vince was selling tickets so people could watch Mick Foley get hurt. Kennedy busts his tail recovering and they drop him after one match. No love it's all about $$$.

Not too surprised that he was released. It seemed like he had a black cloud hovering over his head. Im not sure how he would do in TNA since imo they are more physical over there than in WWE.

Mrrrrrr. Kennedy, no, Mr. un employed. what a shame. 2007 i was a big kennedy fan, great voice, alright style, made batista look good, now this, vince, fire sum1 else, not this guy

Not a big loss I never liked him anyways.

Going back to my comment from another post . I would rather see an old Alex Wright , Glacier , etc . than Kennedy .
Not a fan of his .

Well i guess thats one less reason to keep up with the WWE!!! go ahead Vince get rid of all your good talent--Jeff Jarrett i'm sure will take him at TNA~ Best of luck to MRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Kennedy!!!!

That entire episode of Raw was really awful and this sorry news is just an exclamation point on one of their worst shows ever.

Kevin, I read some reports on the Internet that after Kennedy hit a half botched suplex on Orton, Orton was really hurt and had an immediate revenge with a really brutal RKO that actually broke Kennedy's wrist. Do you think this could be true, I mean Orton "punishing" Kennedy, that leading to Kennedy's release?

Kennedy would have been a multi-time champ by now if he stayed healthy with the way the WWE titles change hands. His strut in the back when he would go to people and plug his movie was priceless. Hopefully TNA jumps on him quick although I could see a possible MMA run with his martial arts background and wrestling skills.

He was easily the most entertaining wrestler when he was around the last few years.

Was'nt a fan. Sad though

A release is sometimes the best thing for guys suffering from bad luck, just ask Matt and Jeff Hardy. I think Kennedy will be back, so long as he can work through whatever issues are currently plaguing him.

Not quite sure how anyone could think Vince is bad on this call. Sure he is ruthless but in this case Regardless of Kenendy's talent (or lack there of), what business man is going to continue to pay an employee who can never work? My business is hardly a multi million dollar company, but I'd let go an employee who had three or four extended absences.... Even though you can't blame Kennedy for getting injured in a tough business. What we can blame him for is the worst promo in the history of the business - where he asked the crowd what wrestler looked most like Barack Obama.

More than anything I am just pissed off at WWE fans regarding this whole situation with Mr. Kennedy. The first thing I saw on the net after RAW aired on Monday (Kennedy's big return) was a basically hate page created for a guy with a sea of comments from fans and just about every fan belittling and disparaging Mr. Kennedy and talking about how insignificant the guy has become and how nobody cares about him anymore. Then I find out a little earlier that the WWE has released Kennedy probably because they listened to their fans and now the majority of fans on yahoo answers, youtube, and so forth whining and moaning about how WWE and Vince McMahon were so terrible and stupid in doing that and what a great talent Mr. Kennedy is. This is the very same thing that happened with Kizarny not too long ago in which fans had nothing nice to say about him and disparaged the guy at every turn before WWE got rid of him after his first match and then along came a sea of complaints about why the WWE had let him go. Wow! With fans like that, I wouldn't know what the hell to do with my product? WWE fans are retarded.

My thoughts on the situation! Sure, Mr. Kennedy caught my attention years ago as a heel and reminded me a lot of The Rock but let's face it. He lost it. Fact of the matter is, fans didn't care. You heard the silence throughout the arena everytime the guy made a return. It was an indifferent, apathetic crowd reaction. So you have a guy who's constantly injured and can't compete, is a mid-carder trying to be given a push, and can't get the fans excited, and has one catchphrase.

Let's get real here folks. It was time to let the dude go and I agree with Vince McMahon wholeheartedly in this decision.

"...if you have talent you cannot be denied..."

I'm sorry but Kennedy is not all that talented. He's mediocre at best. he was rammed down our throats becuase the had a neat gimmick that grew old fast - announcing himself.

@jackinhebron

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright would be a great comeback story. He was one of my favorites.

honestly I am not surprised i thought he was going to be released when he suffered his last injury but as far as injuries go and people look at Kennedy Randyorton spent his first several years constantly 1 injury after another and look at him know this should be good news for TNA to get a star that should be in his prime.

Sorry. Seriously, it doesn't matter what you think of the guy, he got hurt by - and was fired for - doing his job. That sucks whether you like him or not. Especially if the injury was purposely done by another worker.

At least he has his acting career to fall back on...oh, wait...

This clearly couldn't have happened to a better person. I was so elated when friends started texting me this news over the weekend. If he shows up in TNA, then I'm done...

Well first of all, not only did the last show suck because they were only trying to cater to the "Hollywood" crowd (one of the worst shows I have ever seen), but Ken oversold himself to the point of embarrassment. I've never heard so many crickets in my life! His expectations were set way too high and I don't think anyone could have lived up to them except for the major players like Undertaker or Batista. It almost seemed like he was just trying to hard, just like the WWE with the show. Horrible in every single way. ALL OF IT. Him being let go was a blunder though that I think Vince will recognize once Ken makes it in TNA. And we all KNOW he'll end up in TNA once his wrist heals.

TNA is much better then wwe there fast paced action put slow sluggish wwe to shame and there new matches such as lockdown etc are the best and i also do watch wwe sum times and can vote tna is much better even bobby lashley and kurt angle went there on there own will

RESPONSE FROM KE: Actually, Angle was released by WWE, and Lashley still hasn't signed a contract with TNA.

As far as timing goes, I think we will see that for once, Mr. Kennedy will find himself in the right at the right time.

Since this news broke, TNA has probably closed its negotiations with Bobby Lashley and now they have 90 days to get the money that it had earmarked for Lashley into a contract for Ken Anderson.

Clearly, Anderson would be a better signee since Lashley's commitments would be torn between TNA and MMA (even though I preferred Lashley's in-ring work by far).

Last person to ever wrestle Eddie. Nuff said.
