Trying to sort the good from the bad on TNA Impact
There’s a lot of gray area in TNA right now, and I’m not talking about Kevin Nash’s hair. After trying to sort out who the babyfaces are and who the heels are during Thursday night’s episode of TNA Impact, my head is spinning worse than Abyss’ after he took that stiff chair shot from Cody Deaner.
I’m pretty sure that Mick Foley is a heel and Jeff Jarrett is a babyface. Of course, one of the main story lines heading into the most recent TNA pay-per-view was whether Jarrett was going to turn heel, so he was acting strange there for a while.
Kurt Angle is a heel, but Thursday he was out to get Foley. In their scene together, Foley, who is supposed to be the hardcore guy, played cowardly heel, while Angle, who is supposed to be the vilest villain in the company, played tough-guy babyface. After Foley took out Angle, Sting attacked Foley. Sting is the top babyface on the show, but he is in the Main Event Mafia heel faction. He doesn’t get along with Angle, but he is friendly with MEM members Nash and Booker T.
On Thursday’s episode, Angle talked about needing to keep Jarrett as an ally even though they have been feuding for months. Fellow fan favorites A.J. Styles and Samoa Joe don’t like each other either. And The Motor City Machine Guns, who acted very heelish on this episode, seemed to change sides every week.
That’s a lot to keep track of, especially nowadays when viewers have short attention spans. I can’t image a casual viewer of Impact having any idea who’s good and who’s bad.
I’m not saying that there should be cookie-cutter good guys and bad guys or no story lines that have layers or shades of gray among the characters (for example, the Shawn Michaels-Batista-Chris Jericho story line from last year), but if there’s too much ambiguity, it’s more of a challenge to get people emotionally invested.
I remember in 1997 when Vince McMahon told me in an interview for a story in The Baltimore Sun that babyfaces and heels were passe and he used the words “shades of gray” to describe characters. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was often mentioned at that time as being neither a good guy nor a bad guy. That was true for a brief period, but to suggest that he wasn’t a babyface when he was feuding with Mr. McMahon is ludicrous.
OK, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, here are some other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
When Sting showed up in the final scene, wasn’t he wearing the same mask that Scott Steiner wore after he had been “disfigured” by Samoa Joe?
Man, there sure was a lot of Angle on this episode. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. ...
Speaking of Angle, he said he will give up his position as Godfather of the MEM if he takes the fall in the four-way match at the Sacrifice pay-pe-view on May 24. So let me make sure I understand this: The guy that beats him would get to lead the heel faction, and the other guys in the MEM would be obligated to follow him. Um, OK. ...
I’m encouraged by Matt Morgan offering his services to the MEM. Give that man a push already. ...
From now on, whenever Deaner is on the show, I’m hitting fast forward. Why Abyss would take a hard chair shot to the head in a silly “comedy” bit with this guy is beyond me. ...
I may also fast forward as soon as Sharmell and Jenna Morasca start arguing. I like Sharmell, but I just don’t care about whatever issues she has with Morasca. ...
I didn’t like the Motor City Machine Guns losing to a makeshift team, even one as talented as Amazing Red and Suicide. ...
The Suicide/Christopher Daniels angle has piqued my interest. I’m guessing when Kaz returns he’ll resume the role of Suicide, and he and Daniels will appear together. What I’d really like to see is a six-man match involving Daniels, Suicide and Curry Man. ...
The rules for the stretcher match between Awesome Kong and Madison Rayne were odd. It was more like a Last Man (or Woman) Standing match.

Comments
Kevin , that was kindly worded by saying many viewers have short attention spans .
Oh , and leave it to you to get a Shawn Michaels mention in a TNA post .
For shame . :)

Never mind Daniels, Suicide and Curry Man. I'd like to see Daniels and Kaz both don the Suicide mask and team up.
You could call them Double Suicide.
What do you think of Brutus Magnus and the British Invasion? I think they could be a good heel faction.

Changing Samoa Joe's character was one of the dumbest ideas in TNA history, and that is saying something.
Why the hell would management think fans would want to cheer for some psychotic fan guy running around with a knife?
I must have missed the reconciliation between Angle and Jarrett. Didn't Kurt want to murder Jeff's kids about a month ago?

Shades of grey or no, this Impact did not grab me.
On the other hand tonight's Smackdown was the best wrestling program I've seen on TV in a while start to finish and I found Smackdown unwatchable prior to the draft. Punk and Morrison got nice pushes, Morrison as somewhat of a face even. I think they've assembled an interesting roster on Smackdown this time around. The decision to have Cryme Tyme not wrestle and MC the divas dancing was also a good move! I'd rather see Eve and Layla shake their stuff than Cryme Tyme wrestle another boring match.

MCMG's losing in the first round was ridiculous... Couldnt TNA find a couple of losers to lose to Suicide and Amazing Red (who hasnt been in TNA in yrs) instead of a team as good and entertaining as the guns. Oh yeah, and Daniels taking out both Sabin and Shelley again ridiculous.

Suicide and Homicide shoul start a tag team and call it "Chris Benoit".
Booker t is so annoying and stupid at this point. He says he uses accents to show hollywood his range as an actor. He is a terrible actor!

Here are a few positives from this week's show:
The return of the Amazing Red was simply phenomenal. (For a long time I was hoping that he would return and join LAX as their X division representative.) He is spectacular working at ground level, but he did take to the air on Impact, so it is safe to say that The Amazing Red is at 100%.
Red didn’t get to team with Paul London, but it could eventually lead to a different, long term tag team forming. I read somewhere that TNA has the indy wrestler “B-Boy” signed. I’ve only seen two or so matches of his on YouTube, but I think Red and B-Boy could be an awesome combination.
The British Invasion has me interested already. When I first learned about Doug Williams, I was hoping that TNA would bring in Dave Taylor as his manager and start up a British group with another wrestler or two like Pac. Brutus Magnus isn’t the best in the ring, but at least he now has a very good partner to help him. Rob Terry is another wild card, but he could bring something to the table. While their match wasn’t the best, Homicide looked like a star because he was fantastic going into the match alone and doing so well by himself.
AJ Styles also looked great taking out Nash and Booker T with ease until Samoa Joe came out. I think that the way AJ is going to get over again as the top star in TNA is to simply book him the way he was being booked four years ago…a guy that rarely lost, always won clean, and always had excellent matches. AJ was the icon of TNA, and he could be again if they stop making him lose.
Last but not least, the best thing besides the return of Red would be the amount of screen time given to the Motor City Machine Guns. Their match was awesome, their backstage promo with Foley was funny, and their confrontation with Daniels was excellent. Sabin and Shelly are good on the microphone and I can’t understand why the fans booed them and started a brief “shut up” chant. If we don’t get behind the young guys when they are in these types of segments, then TNA has no qualms with giving the MEM more interview time, and we certainly don’t need that. So please, show some respect for the Machine Guns. Daniels was fantastic as well on the microphone, and I want to see him as the TNA World Heavyweight Champion by years end, preferably at Slammiversary.
Oh yeah, Don West was on top of his game for this episode at least.
So sure, there was too much Foley, Angle, and Deaner, but there were some highlights that made it worth watching.

Thats very clever Andy and I agree I dont think I have understood a thing Booker T has said in the last year, but I am enjoying TNA right now as I am not sure who are the heels and who are the faces so it keeps me on my toes

thought this week of impact was so so a lot of things I didn't like starting with all of the established tag teams jobing in this tournament also Madison being scared of Kong and the Beautiful Peolple ntot voming down to save her just because they were banished from ringside, another thing I didn't like is angle being outsmarted by Mick usually when angle puts his mind to something he can't be talked out of it as far as jenna & Sharmell thing I told u their doing the old Horseman bit Debra & Woman hopefully it didn't work then and it won't work know I did like the Foley/Angle/Sting bit though and loved Kong sqaushing madison especially when the fans started yelling 1 more time she picked her up and hit her with the finisher again as far as grey areas are concerned I think that where Mick's character is he is neither he just attacks everybody he's Dr. Jeckell & Mr Hyde

Samoa Joe needs to lose the face paint and knife. He needs to go back to just being a bad mama-jama.
Why isn't Cornette being used more? If nothing else, put him in a story with the knockouts to help some of their newer talent get over.
What size suit does Steiner wear? Would hate to be his tailor.

With Foley a main character and holding the TNA Title. The whole FREAKIN thing is strange. Is Kevin Sullivan still around with the " Tree of woe " WOOOOOO

RE: B-Boy - it's possible that's he's signed to TNA, but not that probable. He's currently wrestling in SoCal and wrestled today as well as last week and has at least three more bookings in the area later this month.

Shades of grey is fine. Inconsistency is not and that's the problem with TNA.

What was the camera man doing when the Beautiful People were making heir entrance into the ring? He (or she) missed the best entrance in Wrestling today! Just kidding...well...not really.
The Motor City Machine Guns should not have lost. I also don't think they should have been overpowered by Daniels. It was two on one.
By the way, i thought TNA didn't want Christopher Daniels to be called Christopher Daniels anymore, and just Daniels instead, as Daniels owned it instead of TNA. But i thought i heard Alex Shelley call him Christopher Daniels. I just confused myself with what i just typed.
Did i miss something, but Mike Tenay and Don West were going on about The British Invasion as if they had been together in TNA for ages. I'm sure that's the first time i have seen them.
What was the point in having a camera cut to Lashley for 5 seconds during the whole show, when he done nothing. I mean come on, nobody really believed it was him in the closet.
P.S. Sorry this comment is late, but TNA doesn't air until a Saturday night here in Scotland.

Thanks for the info on B-Boy Marko50. When I heard he was signed it was around the time I first heard about Cody Deaner, and that was a long time ago. Besides, I look at several sites and they aren't all accurate.

MCMG are the best thing going in TNA right now. I've also really enjoyed seeing Foley as a heel. He was never someone I liked but seeing him now I can't help but like the development of his heel character.
I feel TNA is getting closer to getting it down right to the point where they could start chipping away at WWE (very slowly). I know they need more clarity with the faces and heels but for some reason I can't explain, they're winning me over.

kev, i gotta say this is the first time ive really not agreed with you.
like someone else said, grey is fine inconsistancy is bad.
the thing with the way angle was acting was just a reaction to foleys manipulative crazy character. i think they both did a great job in this segment and foley was great throughout the whole show, the mr socko in the cupboard was classic.
the guns segments were great to, they didnt really miss a beat. i think those guys are really developing into top level stars.
but kev, the worst thing you said by FAR was about skipping the cody deaner parts.... the guy is awesome.. eagle t-shirt.. fanny pack... duck tape knee pads.. he is greatness.
