Stylin’ and profilin’ on Raw
Watching Ric Flair being Ric Flair is always fun, and it was obvious that he also was having fun Monday night on Raw.
“The Nature Boy” was featured in multiple segments on the show, including an entertaining verbal confrontation with Randy Orton to start things off. He also did a run-in during a star-studded main event pitting Batista and John Cena against Orton, Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes.
In a backstage segment, Flair told Batista that he was going to call out Orton on next week’s show and beat him up in a street fight. I suppose having Flair compete in street clothes in a “fight” is a way to have him physically involved without technically violating the retirement stipulation. It’s a fine line and WWE seems to be stepping just short of crossing it.
Like I said, it’s great to see Flair taking part in the show. I’d like nothing more than for him to return to WWE in a full-time role as a general manager, advisor/manager or even a color commentator. Anything but a wrestler – not even if it was a “one night only” appearance. What – if anything – would be gained in the short term would not be worth what would be lost in the big picture.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
Cena coming out to join in on the show-opening brawl involving Legacy, Batista and Flair got a nice pop because no one expected to see him as part of that story line. The crowd was really hot for the handicap tag match main event, as well. Cena and Batista certainly have their detractors, but when the two of them are in the ring together either as friends or foes, there is electricity in the air. …
Santino Marella might be even more entertaining as a babyface than he was as a heel. Seeing as how Marella almost always gets squashed in his matches, I thought it was hilarious how he seemed so shocked that his offensive moves were effective during his match with Chavo Guerrero. In an upset of epic proportions, Santino won a match on the same night that twin sister Santina lost a match. …
Almost as big of a shocker was Bruno Sammartino’s name being mentioned on Raw. …
Two weeks ago on Raw, I thought The Miz delivered a promo that elicited go-away heat rather than legit heel heat. I have to say, however, that his mic work Sunday at the Judgment Day pay-per-view and Monday on Raw was really good. I especially liked his parody of Cena’s rap character. …
One nitpick with Miz’s promo: When the crowd chanted “You suck!” at him, Miz said, “Haven’t heard that one before.” Yeah, Miz, but I have heard that one before, because you just said it the previous night at Judgment Day. …
The backstage skit with Miz and Maryse was strange. Perhaps this was a foreshadowing of them being aligned in the story line. I don't know if it's still the case, but apparently the two of them were dating at one time. I know, kind of ruins it for us Maryse fans, doesn’t it? …
Speaking of Maryse, when she speaks French I suddenly feel like I’m Gomez Addams and she’s Morticia. Some of you old-timers will get that pop culture reference. …
Kelly Kelly winning the battle royal to earn a shot at Maryse’s divas title was a surprise. I thought for sure Mickie James would win, but Maryse costing James the match furthers the rivalry between them leading up to their inevitable showdown for the title. …
Was anyone surprised that WWE announcers took a few verbal jabs at Denver Nuggets and Pepsi Center owner Stan Kroenke? I wonder who was in their ear feeding them those lines. …
I also wonder what was going through Dusty Rhodes’ mind as he was watching the show. I’m guessing “The American Dream” swelled with pride as he saw his youngest son wrestling in the main event with three of the biggest stars in the business. When his oldest son came out with a painted gold face and a clingy gold bodysuit and began hugging a leprechaun, well, probably not so much. By the way, do you think Cody learned how to do that moonsault from Big Dust?

Kevin, I'm not old but I know what you're talking about and dude... I wouldn't start the kissing her at the arms!

Mmmmm...You rang Mrs. Addams...

All I have to say is poor Brian Kendrick he sure looked like a chump. He deserves much better. I agree that he should be in ECW where he could shine. I think he could have some great matches with Christian

I hope The Fiz says "I haven't heard that one before" every single time they start the "you suck" chant, let's get creative people, watch some ECDub film.
Santino's power walk is brilliant, best performer in WWE. How about a Santino Marella movie, I mean John Cena did put the bar pretty low.

When Maryse sprayed the perfume into Mickie James' eyes I asked myself, "Is Maryse the French Canadian version of Angelina Love?" Of course, if I were in Quebec I would ask, "Is Angelina Love the English Canadian version of Maryse?"
As for Kelly Kelly winning the battle royale I see a heel turn in her future, an alignment with Maryse and - Presto! - the WWE's version of The Beautiful People. Then they would need only Cute Kip/Billy Gunn to complete them.
Of course, they could spoil it by putting The Miz into the mix. The Miz is getting X-Pac heat. If Don West thinks Jarrett's home videos are like waterboarding he should watch The Miz cut a promo. To be fair, Lawler actually made the segment worse. The only redeeming thing from The Miz segment was the Big Show choking out Lawler. The sounds you heard The Big Show getting were genuine heel heat.

We better just get ready for it now, Ric Flair will wrestle again!! I don't like it any more than you do Eck but it's gonna happen. I've already started thinking of ways to justify it. Like when Flair said "I didn't want to retire, they made me retire." It's better to cushion the blow now, so it won't sting as much when it actually happens.
Do you think this could be the start of a slow build to a Cena/Batista rematch at SummerSlam?
Does anyone have a theroy as to why crowds always seem to be hotter for RAW than they do for PPV's. I understand different building, different fan's but the last few PPV's the crowds have just been...ehhh.
This could be a fun little program for Kendrick, trying to find a tag team partner each week. Here's hoping it's "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan next week.
Are they gonna try 3 announcers on RAW? Do you think that's why J.R was out there? Maybe so they could test the waters a bit. He sure did sound bitter calling the Santina/Vicky match.
A thought on Goldust. Before "Stone Cold" was drinking beer and giving the one finger salute, before DX was crotch-chopping, before The Rock was talking about the "People's Strudel", before the Attitude Era even began there was Goldust, weirding everyone out with his over-the-top-homo-erotic-behavior. I really don't thimk he get's the credit he deserves for helping to usher in that era of wrestling. If you were kidding, in a pervious post, about looking forward to a Goldust/Hornswoggel program, well I'm not. I think that will be kinda of fun.
I said the same thing to my brother at a RAW show in Dec. when Cody Rhodes did a moonsault from the top rope. "Hey look! Just like his old man use to do!"
What's up Eck, did you not see the MVP/Matt Hardy match?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I wasn't kidding about Goldust/Hornswoggle duo. I think it will make for some funny stuff.
On MVP-Hardy, I don't comment on every single match or promo. I just didn't have anything to say about it. It was pretty much what I expected.

Something that might be interesting would be Shane McMahon announcing, on crutches, that the company has suspended Vickie Guerrero as Raw General Manager for 60 days for violating the terms of her contract by booking herself in a match.
Ric Flair would be named Acting Raw General Manager. Flair could then wreak havoc on Orton, Legacy, the Guerreros, Big Show, etc. for the next 60 days...

I don't have HDNet, but there's always YouTube. I did manage to see Flair standing in the ring with Jerry Lynn, Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, and Tyler Black just recently. Now he's in the ring with the Legacy, Cena, and Batista.
Mr. Eck, of all the names I just mentioned, who would you like to see Flair fight? I would go with Aries or Danielson.
Also, is it really so hard to have a tag division? Raw highlighted how vacant things really are in the WWE. Between the World's Greatest Tag Team, the new Hart Foundation, Brian Kendrick and Ezekiel Jackson, Primo/Carlito, and Priceless, there really is no need to form throw away teams.
There hasn't been anything too enjoyable on Raw since the 3 hour draft. MVP and Hardy was the one highlight and you missed it if you blinked.
Again, I would recommend supporting SmackDown and everything else. Read a book on Monday night.
RESPONSE FROM KE: All of the guys from ROH you mentioned are good workers, but the guy I like best in ROH is Nigel McGuinness.

Last week, when The Brian Kendrick said that he wanted a tag team partner, I thought he contradicted the The-Brian-Kendrick persona, the man who has arrived and will be a star on his own. Now, however, I think that there just may be some potential for a pay-off here. Kendrick can go through an experimental partner every week, leading up to his introducing someone big.

miz is improving at an astounding rate.a few short weeks ago before he did any of these promos i thought the guy had no hope of being an entertaining performer but the last 2 he has done have been better than most of the guys there, hes been personal, creative able to adlib and pretty damn funny to boot! threres great potential for future feuds with him, all most guys ever do is say that they are gonna win the belt so i really think miz has gone out of his way by making cena toilet paper!! future star in the making, something i would of NEVER of said 1 month ago.
santino was great to as always, i knew i was right to have faith in that guy.

Kelly Kelly vs. Maryse in a Hell in a Cell match at Extreme Rules. Book it.

Santino's power walk is brilliant...lol
How about a Santino Marella movie?
Great thought!!! Beth was a great straight man...I mean woman!

Why did The King and Michael Cole keep referring to Santino as Santina. I mean, it's not like they're the same person or anything.
Did you hear the fan shout "Walk it off!" when Santino was selling an injury. Guess what Santino done a few moments later...
J.R had one of the lines of the night when he said "I'm glad this one ain't an iron man match." at the beginning of the Santina Vickie...erm...match.
Marella has a talent. He is so funny. I still have his rendition of "Oooo Chavo..." going through my head.
Can't go through a comment without mentionng Randy Orton. Well, guess i just did.
Nice blog again Kevin.

That Dusty Rhodes crack had me laughing...until I remembered Dusty as the "Common Man" alongside Sapphire. Let him cast the first stone who has not worn polka dots.
RESPONSE FROM KE: You have a point there.
Posted by: Stephen | May 19, 2009 9:29 PM
Was Maryse using a leftover bottle of Rick Martel's arrogance?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Either that or the stuff that Precious used to spray in the ring before Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin's matches.

William Regal. Stob Jobbing.

Did anyone catch Santino say I can beat, then pause and say My sister can beat her after Chavo announced the Santina/Vickie match?
Posted by: Nick | May 20, 2009 2:59 AM
I don't get it. Why did Mickie James have to win a battle royal to become number one contender? I know she lost, but I mean, she pinned the champion 2 weeks in a row, doesn't that call for a title shot? Oh well, it's nice to see her and Maryse fueding since it's about the only direction in the women's division, and I am really glad that one direction involves Mickie James. GO MICKIE!!!!

I see nothing wrong with Flair returning to the ring. Retired or not, the guy is in demand and he has every right to cash in on the opportunities. On top of that, he's doing something that he loves. That guy will never stop

I can't recall if anyone has mentioned this or not, but have you noticed that Legacy only has one shirt? Every week one of them has a shirt on and the other two don't. Can they not afford matching shirts for the three of them? I can only imagine Orton throwing the shirt to DiBiase, unwashed, telling him, "This is your week"!

The Sammartino comment was definitely weird to hear.
I have a feeling, though, that Lawler just thought up that name out of the blue. I don't think it will tie in with anything else.
I think Lawler could have gotten a huge reaction had he said "Randy Savage" instead, though.
As always, very entertaining blog, Kevin.
