Mick Foley takes on ‘Rocky’ on TNA Impact
When Mick Foley promised at the beginning of TNA Impact on Thursday to wrestle a former world champion later in the show, it was done in such a way that viewers knew Foley was being insincere. Still, I was expecting more than a cardboard cutout of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa.
If you missed the show, yes, Foley actually wrestled the cutout. I know that TNA was attempting to do something so silly that it was funny, but while the idea probably sounded good when it was being discussed backstage, it didn’t really work.
A better idea would have been to have Foley call out former WCW world champion Vince Russo from the back and then proceed to beat him up. On second thought, that wouldn’t work either, because it would have turned Foley babyface.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
The highlight for me was the contract signing between TNA women’s champion Angelina Love and Awesome Kong. No woman in wrestling can touch Love on the microphone, and Kong’s facial expressions were great. TNA has done a nice job of building anticipation for the Love-Kong match at the Sacrifice pay-per-view Sunday. …
TNA hasn’t done a very good job of building up the Samoa Joe-Kevin Nash match at Sacrifice, however. A lot of TV time last year was spent on the slowly developing story line of Nash mentoring Joe and ultimately turning on him. However, after just one match between them – which was won by Nash at the Turning Point pay-per-view last November – the feud came to an abrupt end due to Nash suffering a staph infection. Now we’re finally getting to the payoff, and it comes across as just another match on the pay-per-view. It will be very interesting to see how this match is booked, because the only result that makes sense is a decisive victory by Joe. …
The way things are playing out on TV, it seems as if Joe and A.J. Styles should be wrestling each other at Sacrifice. …
The Sting-Eric Young match needed to be longer (it was less than four minutes) for it to have meant something. Since Young is becoming more and more frustrated in the story line, it would have made more sense if he had gotten some near falls on Sting before Sting pulled out the win out of nowhere. By the way, wasn’t Young locked in a trunk the last time we saw him? …
I’m intrigued by the Matt Morgan-Main Event Mafia story line. If TNA really wants to give Morgan a big push – which I think would be a great idea – it should have Kurt Angle welcome Morgan into the MEM and then try to hold him back because he sees him as a threat to his spot. Eventually, the insecure Angle has the MEM take out Morgan, who would then become the top babyface in the company as he seeks revenge. …
In cutting a promo about his I Quit Match with Booker T. at Sacrifice, Styles said that he will never say those two words because they are not even in his vocabulary. Then he said “I quit” five times in about 30 seconds.

We have to give TNA at least some credit for trying things WWE won't do anymore. Although the Foley match was ridiculous, it was still partly worthwhile to see. It establishes Foley as a psychotic, yet also still makes use of his humorous side. I really don't recall anything in WWE recently that at least attempted something outside the box. I'll take Foley antics over Santina Marella's cross dressing anytime.
Holy crap, did I just defend TNA?

TNA can do the old Flair/Luger storyline with Matt Morgan. They let him in the Horsemen but he became a threat to Flair's spot and that was the start of Luger chasing the title. They kind of did it with Sting in the Horsemen as well. Foley is hard to understand. One week he is great, the next week a victim of bad writing.

I might be in the minority about it but I actually found the Rocky thing funny especially Don West's over the top (even for him) reaction to it. Foley's the only reason why I'm turning every week to TNA and makes me wonder how great he would had been doing this role as a gm on raw or smackdown.

Kevin, I know you've stated before that you prefer WWE to TNA overall, but c'mon... isn't reviewing WWE Superstars, the company's "D" show behind Raw, Smackdown and ECW, BEFORE you take the time to review Impact, TNA's one and only show here in the states, where all their major news and angles take place, a TAD excessive?
Couldn't you take the time to sit down, watch Impact and blog about that before freakin' Superstars??? What's next? Will you break out your old WWF "In Your House" PPV's on VHS and review those before Impact too? For those TNA fans out there, and there seem to be a good number based on the feedback you get on your TNA blogs, this really smacks of favoritism.
Impact aired almost a full 48 hours ago when you posted this today. To me that just seems like bad "journalism".
Just my 2 cents...
RESPONSE FROM KE: In all honesty, I tape Superstars and Impact and then watch them in order. Since Superstars comes on first, I write about it first. Plus, there's always a lot less going on in an hour of Superstars than in two hours of Impact so it's easier to write and get out of the way before I sit down to do Impact. Keep in mind I have to sleep some time and see my family a little, too. Superstars and Impact were both posted later than usual because I got swamped with other duties at The Sun. I ALWAYS write about Impact, but not always ECW, and there may be weeks when I don't write about Superstars.

i loved the Foley rocky match, i loved the whole TNA show except Suicide & daniels beating the IWGP Jr Tag champs i know the titles are from japan put they make those titles look horrible by losing every week does New japan even care about their titles because you got champs that constantly losing?

I'm not coming down on Kevin so much for the lag time in the Impact review coming online, as much as I am for him posting about Superstars before he does Impact. I understand he's got other stuff going on, but like I said in my post, I just find it annoying to get online Friday morning to read his Impact thoughts and instead find a review of WWE's 4th tier show. That's all.
But if this is the system he's going to use, then I'll get over it. I understand that Superstars is probably easier to get out of the way first.

Surely Jeff Jarret must have seen Foley standing about two feet away from him holding a chair above his head when Jarret was hitting his finisher.
Wow. We will will now have more people crowding the ring at once, than when the MEM are there (that's including the bodyguards etc.). It looks like the British Invasion are joining forces with the "Anti-Americans".
I kind of thought the same of Suicide speaking as with Umaga, although not as strongly. I don't think it was the right time for Umaga, especially in a storyline with little significance really. I also think it is better with Suicide being mysterious.
Don West had the line of the night when he said (reguading Daniels and Suicide):
"I'm not saying anything, i'm just saying."
It makes no sense whatsoever.
What happened to Lashley.
I was thinking the exact same thing about Styles saying I Quit. He did the same in his inteview last week, proclaiming he would never say "I Quit", before saying it multiple times.
I saw Impact after your post (U.K airing...) and as i was scrolling through, the headline "Mick Foley takes in 'Rocky' on Impact". Of course, Dwayne Johnson came to mind at first...that would never happen. But i certainly wasn't expecting a cardboard cut out.
Another excellent blog Kevin.

I thought the funniest part of the Foley vs "Rocky" bit was the old geezer that was playing the part of Micky. He definitely had me ROFLing and i dont even think he knew where he was.
I wish the Angelina/Kong feud didnt need to end right now.Angelina is at her very best.Maybe they could have Raisha turn on Kong and choke her with her Burka or something.

To Andrew
This is a blog and not a column. Eck can write about anything even 20 years after it happens. Simply because it is his space and he might as well post videos of the Eck family eating dinner together.
One should be thankfully that he is writing some insightful columns for us to read for free.

I ALWAYS write about Impact, but not always ECW, and there may be weeks when I don't write about Superstars.
That's good considering I rarely ever watch TNA Impact, and I don't mind giving an hour to ECW or Superstars, but RAW has become a chore and I'm not always home for Smackdown! on Friday nights.
BTW, Andrew - I don't think "blogging" is the same as "journalism" even when it appears on a newspaper's website.

Angle could bring in Matt Morgan as an intern for the MEM with Morgan only gaining membership if he can win the Legends title from AJ Styles and hand it over to the MEM. This could lead to a Styles vs. Morgan program that I have been thinking would be really good.
JJ vs. Joe should have been at the start of the show. Jarrett looked like Superman confronting Foley after just being attacked a few minute earlier, and that's not good.
Before anyone makes fun of the Foley vs cardboard Rocky match, just remember that Ric Flair has been wrestling broomsticks for years...sorry...

i thought the foley rockky match was awesome and funny! espeacily when he did the peoples elbow and crossed the ring to many times (don west commented he was showing off his ability or something!) and then he tripped on the cut out and didnt hit the ropes properly then went to the elbow! foleys the reason im tuning in to tna everyweek aswell i have to say..
don west is officially pretty entertaining. infact i rate him higher than lawler at the moment.
