Confusion continues to reign on TNA Impact

I don’t know about everyone else, but I do enough thinking throughout the day, so when I watch wrestling on television, I don’t want to have to think too much.

Trying to find the logic in the actions of some of the main characters in TNA requires a lot of thinking. TNA Impact has become the televised wrestling equivalent of Southland Tales, a movie that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was in that was impossible to follow (and hardly anybody saw).

Last week I wrote about how much gray area there is in TNA, and that direction continued on Thursday night’s episode.

During the opening segment, Sting entered the ring with The Main Event Mafia. So the most popular babyface in TNA is back in good standing with the vilest villains in the company, including Kurt Angle, who not all that long ago was spitting in Sting’s face and trying to cripple him.

Next, Mick Foley – who, as best I can tell, is a heel – came out with (Don’t call me Christopher) Daniels – who is a babyface – to confront the MEM. Later in the show, Sting and Jarrett, who are on opposite sides of the fence, spoke respectfully to each other and shook hands on a deal concerning Sting’s involvement in the main event on the Sacrifice pay-per-view.

My head hurts.

I can sort of understand what TNA is trying to do with Foley’s character. He is supposed to be mentally unstable, so his sudden mood swings and ambiguity actually make sense. Sting’s character, however, makes absolutely no sense to me. His initial motivation for joining the MEM was because the young guys didn’t show the veterans the proper respect. A bit of a stretch but not totally unbelievable. The fact that he is still a member of the heel faction at this point defies logic.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The 10-man tag match was all right, but I thought it would be better considering the star power (MEM vs. Foley, Jarrett, Daniels, A.J. Styles and Samoa Joe). When it was established that Sting would get a spot in the Sacrifice four-way main event if he pinned Foley in this match, it pretty much guaranteed the result. The only question was how the finish would go down. …

So Sting is putting his career on the line at Sacrifice, while Angle is just putting up his role as the Godfather of the MEM. Sure, that seems fair. If Angle were to lose, what would prevent him from just having the MEM members refuse to follow the new Godfather? …

Jeremy Borash is great as the guy always stirring the pot backstage and getting under everyone’s skin. He’d make a good authority figure/general manger at some point. Not now, though, as there’s already about two too many of those in TNA. …

Hey, here’s something you don’t see all the time in TNA: Two babyfaces (Daniels and Jay Lethal) not getting along. …

Was it my imagination or did Suicide look a little thicker? I’m guessing it was Kaz, not Daniels, in the costume. …

I like the way Matt Morgan was booked to look like a monster. Hopefully, TNA follows through on this. …

Eric Young has been a bit of a complainer recently. For his sake, I hope that means he’s turning heel, because the whining babyface role is a career-killer. …

Who was Angelina Love talking to on the phone? Could we be seeing the return to TV of Cute Kip? If so, I’m all for it.

Why does it defy logic that Sting is still a member of the MEM? What has changed? I mean, I understand your fustration with him and Angle getting along after what they've been through. But if Sting changed because he felt the Frontline was not showing him respect, how have they changed to make Sting not still unite with the MEM? Over the past weeks, even while he has been fueding with Angle, Sting has consistently said that Booker, Nash and Steiner respect him, so it makes sense that he's still with them. They go back years from WCW.

I think what TNA is trying to do is make things unprdictable (i.e. bluring the babyface/heel line) so you don't know what people like Foley, Joe or Sting are going to do each week. I think they believe this will be intriguing to viewers and spark talk and interest in Impact. Now I know YOU think it's confusing and don't like it, but I myself (and possibly others) welcome it because it is NEW way of doing things and ORIGINAL. Ever since WCW went out of business 8 years ago, wrestling (basically the WWE) has followed the same predictable, bland formula, and it hasn't intrigued me and many others. It's like Jeff Jarrett said in an interview a few weeks ago:

"Without risk, there's no reward. So if we don't risk trying anything – if we just sit back and keep ourselves in a little box and just give them a very cookie cutter, a very non-exciting, non-suspenseful – If you just give them a very straightforward product, that's very, very boring. I've seen that. I've done that. I've been a part of that. It's not successful and it's never been successful. Do we bat 1000? Absolutely not. A great hitter in baseball – what do they hit the ball, one out of three times? So you have to try things. Do we bat a thousand? Absolutely not. We never will. But we need to try things. And have we screwed up? Absolutely we have, but we're going to keep on keeping on"

I for one appreciate TNA for doing something different even if it doesn't fit in with the "traditional" babyface/heel rules. That's been going on for decades and it's gotten boring. It's just like in the 90s when WCW stepped outside the box with the nWo and the WWE with Stone Cold and DX and the business went to another level. The same formula has been used for the last 8 years and it takes trying some new things (even if some people think it's confusing) to generate interest again. And for all the talk about how TNA copies/recycles everything the WWE does, it seems like they show get some credit for trying something new even if it may not be the right formula to some.

RESPONSE FROM KE: We disagree, but I respect your opinion. I think history shows that personal issues between babyfaces and heels is what puts butts in seats because fans can get emotionally invested in the characters. It isn't rocket science. If there is too much gray area, ambiguity or inconsistency in wrestling, people might watch it on TV, but they're not going to care enough to pay for the product. That's why TNA's ratings have held steady or slightly risen, but live show attendance and PPV buy rates aren't good. Thinking outside the box is great at times, but that doesn't mean that you need to re-invent the wheel.

As for Sting being in MEM, it still doesn't add up. A big part of the problem is that he joined the heel faction and never actually turned heel. The young guys not showing him respect is one thing, by why would the Sting character compromise his values and join the "bad guys?" And, yes, he and Nash, Steiner and Booker have history, but during a lot of it, they were on opposite sides -- especially Sting and Steiner.

I'm sure I might be in the minority here, but I personally prefer TNA over WWE. I'm fine with TNA doing what they're doing because it's something different each week and it doesn't insult my intelligence nearly as often as WWE programming does. But maybe it's just an underdog thing too.

I don't even watch WWE anymore because the storylines just seem so repetitive, cheesy and 'kiddie' oriented. I miss the 'attitude' era.

I got a laugh when Jay Lethal/Black Machismo shouted "Kabuki" at Christopher Daniels.

" Who was Angelina Love talking to on the phone ? " - Kevin that's between me and her .
Actually I didn't see Impact this week but my week would not be complete if I did not pester you one more time Kevin .
And just a comment re: your thoughts about Matt Morgan . - I'm just not sold on him and not really sure what you see in him . I've not really seen that much improvment and don't think he's got that " it " factor . Understood that TNA needs to groom young talent , but to me , he's nothing special .

in regards to Suicide, I would think this whole stink about Daniels being suicide is more of a storyline that would end up in Suicide and Daniels in the ring at the same time. I think it's pretty obvious that Kaz is back in the Suicide costume. Could we see a Motor City Machine Guns vs. Suicide/Daniels match at Slammiversary in Detroit??

I can't really get into the TNA matches on TV. I really wanted to enjoy the 10 man tag, but hearing a pin drop when all the wrestlers came out killed it for me. I get off on crowd reaction, so the show can be even more hard to watch when the fans aren't really reacting to anything.

I reaaly don't like what there doing with the Beautiful People a month ago they were destroying everyone now they are being takien out 1 by 1 without the others helping out the other since when have they ever hollowed thwe rules. I guess I must be crazy beause the Jarrett, Foley, Sting thing makes sense to me follow me here Foley is Bi-polar which goes without saying where as jarrett is still pissed of for being attacked and hates foley right now more than the MEM at the same time he respects sting thats why he's been trying to get him out of the MEM and then lastly Sting hates foley for his attacks on him and he stole his title so he wants to get his belt back no matter what.

Speaking of The Rock, here's a funny story from the Onion:

My husband and I both really like TNA because it's different. We watch all the wrestling shows but I personally look forward to seeing TNA the most each week. I recommend not to overthink it-just watch and enjoy! And yes, we have ordered their PPV's. TNA is a refreshing change from all the McMahon controlled wrestling shows.

Orangna -
Amen !

No comment on Awesome Kong breaking her "silence"?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I figured it had to happen at some point. I couldn't really tell much from "Dumb blonde, dead blonde." If she splits with Raisha Saeed at some point, Kong is going to have to talk, but it would probably be wise to keep it to a minimum/

Is it just me or do most episodes of Impact seem to start with the MEM opening the show. That ring sure does seem crowded when they are in it.

Why did the fearless Mafia consisting of five fromer world champions, all leave the ring when Samoa Joe entered alone?

Not sure if you noticed Kevin, but Daniels once again didn't make it through a whole episode of Impact without being called Christopher Daniels - Jay Lethal in the Suicide Creed match.

So the MCMGs only got a two minute promo...

It was funny when Bubba...sorry Brother Ray called Jethro Holliday, Murdoch and then quickly corrected himself.

What was the point in the mystery man segment with Taylor Wilde. Talking about that, there seems to be a lot of mystery people programs going on in TNA at the moment. We have:
Taylor Wilde's mystery man
The guy in the car that dropped off Samoa Joe
Who really is Suicide
And finally as you mentioned
The person Angelina Love was on the phone to.

Where was Bobby Lashley?

to be honest, even though what tna is doing heel/ face wise with the characters is inconsistant on pretty much a weekly basis, i have to say that it has made the characters a hell of alot more likeable than the wwe faces. only one i dont find likeable in the slightest is jarret. the wwe way of doing faces(and in some cases heels) right now has alot more holes in it than this kev, surpised you never say anything about that.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Give me some examples of the holes in the way WWE portrays faces and heels.
