WWE Superstars has highs (Kofi Kingston) and lows (Hornswoggle)

The first time I mentioned Kofi Kingston on the blog was two weeks after his WWE television debut in February 2008. I wrote: “I see something in Kofi Kingston. Although he’s a little green, Kingston is athletic, has some unique moves and showed a lot of charisma in his vignettes.”

Kingston has done nothing but get better over the past 14 months, and if he continues to have matches like the one he had with Edge Thursday night on WWE Superstars, the 27-year-old high flyer could end up being a big part of WWE’s future.

The match was a textbook example of how to get a main-eventer a quality win heading into a pay-per-view, while also getting over the guy doing the job. Kingston got in a lot of offense and he and Edge worked well together.

That was the highlight of the show. The lowlight was Tyson Kidd – another young wrestler with a lot of upside – getting pinned by Hornswoggle in a tag team bout.

The match, which pitted Finlay and Hornswoggle against Kidd and Natalya, was a two-minute squash and comes on the heels of Natalya losing to the little guy on ECW Tuesday. So much for the pink and black-clad duo having any momentum.

It was billed as Hornswoggle’s final appearance with his “father” Finlay before heading to Raw. After the match, Finlay serenaded him with his rendition of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.” This family friendly stuff is starting to annoy me.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

John Cena cut a very good promo talking about his rivalry with Edge and how it all ends Sunday with their Last Man Standing Match at the Backlash pay-per-view. …

Kane avenged his loss to CM Punk on Raw Monday by pinning him in tag match also involving The Big Show and Rey Mysterio. I like Punk but I can’t say I’m all that interested in seeing him wrestle Kane at Backlash.

The Kofi-Edge match is everything Superstars should be.

1) Inter-promotional match, assuming other shows stop having these as well.

2) 10+ minute match of good wrestling, with a clean finish.

3) Mixing a mid-carder up with a main-eventer in a non squash match. Let the main guy win, but let the middle guy prove that he can hold his own.

A Tyson Kidd vs Finlay match would be a good match to do next week. Finlay is an established midcarder, and Kidd is a nobody right now in WWE. So it would be basically the same as what I said in #3 above, helping people get recognized by holding their own (even when losing) to someone more established. Also it means more Natalya, which is a perk (or two)

Hornswoggle couldn't pin a tail on a donkey, it's a joke that he has got a pin over any current superstar or diva.

What do you think the chances are of CM Punk cashing in this weekend after Cena has endured a long match and only just wins against Edge to take the WHC over to Smackdown?

Would make sense.

Kofi does have a lot of uspide. Hopefully creative won't screw him.

Neither here nor there on Horny, but Kidd should be able to recover from the loss.

I've really been a Finlay fan especially since he turned face. His situtation reminds me of how wrestling should be in that he may be the only wrestler in which you can never 100% know wether he will be booked to win or lose. Thats how wrestling should be. Most of the time you can 100% conclude the outcome of most wrestlers' matches.

Where DJ Gabriel?

I personally love watching Finlay and Hornswoggle. I think they have a great dynamic. I don't know how things are going to work out for Hornswoggle, now that is on Raw, but I'm interested in seeing what's in store for him.

I agree that Tyson Kidd has a lot of potential but he has to lose that stupid haircut.

Kofi Kingston has amazing abilities in the ring and he cut a great promo not too long ago. I think it's about time he started getting some wins.

You aren't the only one annoyed by the "family friendly" WWE. I long for the days when wrestlers would repeatedly bludgeon their opponents with steel chairs and garbage cans. Ahhh, the good ol' days.

Hey Artist Formerly Known As...;

Thanks for the pop. To answer your question, I'm so old that when I went to school, they didn't have history! but seriously folks, I go back to the old coliseum on Monroe Street, in Baltimore. I watched them all from Pat O'conner to Nature Boy Buddy Rogers to the Grahams, the Kangaroos, Edwuard Carpontier, Antonino Rocca, Skull Murphy and Brute Bernard. You name em, I saw em. I used to be the wrestling correspondent for a local radio station. Those were the days.

Hey Kev, I've got a question for you and wanted to get your thoughts about Natalya and former WWE Diva, Cherry. Was the reason that Cherry was released because of her size, in that the WWE didn't think she was small enough, or skinny enough? She and Natalya are almost identical in size, though (5'6"/130 vs. 5'5"/135). Now, I realize that Cherry's wrestling talents were not equal with Natalya's. And she doesn't have the wrestling pedigree that Natalya does. However, she was improving in the ring and IMHO, much easier on the eyes than Natalya. Nattie's thighs just look freakin' huge in those tights she wears.

RESPONSE FROM KE: In my opinion, WWE does have a certain body type that they prefer in their female talent. Neither Cherry not Natalya fit that type. So, yes, I do think it's a factor in determining the level of their push. I get that wrestling is a cosmetic business and having a good look is important for women and men, but I also don't think it should be one size fits all.

Is is wrong that I want to see some monster heel get his hands on Hornswoggle? Because I do. I really, really do.

What I hope WWE does is restart the Jamie Noble-Hornswoggle feud that just disappeared when Hornswoggle was forced to give up the Cruiserweight title a few years back. It was hilarious when Noble was chasing a midget around for a belt. Sean, you said that you missed the good ol' days when wrestlers would repeatedly bludgeon their openents with steel chairs and garbage cans, well just watch TNA Impact and no doubt you'll see that happening. Just watch the Jarrett-Steiner match from last night.
Kevin, are you going to put an Impact recap up later? What's your opinion on Trevor "Jethro Holiday" Murdoch debuting last night and the rumored return of the Amazing Red?

Maybe I am alone, but I like a more family-friendly product. That being said, I don't care at all for Hornswoggle.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Personally, I thought some of the stuff in the Attitude Era crossed the line (Mark Henry's scene with a transvestite comes to mind), but I also don't want wrestling to lose its edge entirely and become a cartoon.

WWE is walking a fine line between appealing to a portion of their audience, and completely alienating another.
IMO WWE does need to be family friendly, but does not need to go out of their way to appeal to kids. Kids will always be fans, it's not as if kids weren't fans in the Attitude Era. Does having midgets win matches, or having children dance around the ring appeal to anyone, I don't think it does. You can be PG and family friendly without being ridiculous.

Mike C: What do you think the chances are of CM Punk cashing in this weekend after Cena has endured a long match and only just wins against Edge to take the WHC over to Smackdown?

If Punk was going to do that wouldn't he have just cashed in after Edge gave Cena the con-chair-to? It does make you wonder what they wait for.

Ha, ha I get it...Highs, cause Kofi's Jamaican and low's cause Hornswoggle's vertically challenged. Good one Eck.
I see good things, long term for Kofi. I think down the road after quiet a few show stealing pefomances, maybe another couple highlight reel type MITB preformances like he had this year, and he's still not able to break through the glass celing, and the happy-go-lucky attitude of his kinda goes south. I see him as a pretty cool heel. Give him a pinstripe suit, dark sunglasses, and a cool swagger about him and he might be alright in that role. I think he'd cut some pretty intresting promo's with that accent of his.
Quick thought on Backlash. I hope Cena retains on Sun. and they keep both titles on RAW for a little while. That way the Smackdown roster start's to get restless about not having a World Title to compete for and they turn there attention to Punk, who has the MITB case, kinda of making him the volcal point of the show. It could be defended like a title. Make a nice slow build until SummerSlam when he decides to cash it in, hopefully against Orton. They need more good long, thought out storylines. Things happen a little too quickly from PPV to PPV nowadays. Vince could use a guy like me on the creative team, if only he would return my letters. Maybe I should stop writting them in crayon.
Anywho, have a good weekend everyone and enjoy Backlash!

RESPONSE FROM KE: Actually it was "highs" because Kofi is a high flyer.

Yes , those were the days !
And yes , we are old !!

"Personally, I thought some of the stuff in the Attitude Era crossed the line...."

TSN, Raw's Canadian home at the time, agreed with you. The network would axe entire segments due to their content. After commercial breaks, Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross would be talking about some outrageous thing which had just happened, and the Canadian audience hadn't seen it. If the whole segment wasn't axed, the camera would cut away and show the crowd when something raunchy was happening in the ring. I don't want to return to those days, but true, I don't want the Teletubbies, either.
