WWE beats American Idol

WWE issued a news release Thursday touting the fact that it beat American Idol in the 18-34 male demographic for the week of April 13.

Quoting statistics from Nielsen Media Research, the release said that WWE programming reached 2.3 million 18-34 males during the week, while American Idol reached 2.0 (April 14) and 2.1 (April 15) that week in the same demo.

Now I know that some know-it-alls in the media are going to say that WWE’s claim is misleading because the company is combining the numbers for Raw, ECW, Superstars and Smackdown and is not taking into account the viewers who watch more than one show, so the statistics do not reflect unique viewers. Plus, if the two episodes of American Idol were combined, its number would be 4.1.

Frankly, I’m not about to let facts stand in the way of this story. I am so sick of hearing about American Idol that whatever WWE has to do to manipulate the numbers so that it can say it beat the glorified karaoke show is fine by me.

"Misleading" is a charitable description. "Insulting even to Darrell Huff" might be more on-target.

WWE does itself no favors by jerking around the press.

Sounds like a sausage fest to me.Oversaturation for WWE t.v. Do you think they will try to knock off TNA on Thurs. nites now??

Kev, you know, I think that WWE should take a cue, and instead of releasing people, they should take the bottom 12 or so, put them on a show and call it WWE Idol, the fans voting off each week the 'talent' who leaves, based on matches, promos, etc. That would be a way that they could keep getting rid of people, while at the same time listening to fans.
And just so people know, this is said rather tongue-in-cheek.
But still a fun idea. I'd watch that ahead of American Idol, Raw, Smackdown or ECW.

Thank you kevin! I hate idol.

Interesting idea, g.

Not to discredit WWE in anyway but what self-respecting male, age 18-34 (or any age for that matter) is watching American Idol?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Amen, brother.

Wow, 18-34 males, big whoop. So they're basically saying that they had a large showing from their key demographic while AI had a weak showing from one of their weakest demographics? What an accomplishment. Hell, if this had even been both sexes combined I would have said it's impressive, but how many adolescent males are die-hard Idol fans? Not to say I'm an Idol fan, or that I'm not sick of the whole Idol phenomenon. In fact, I'd even rather watch Chikara than Idol. The problem is that most 18-34 males would probably feel the same way only with their least favorite wrestling promotion inserted in place of Chikara, and to hold up the fact that you did so well with that specific demographic is a bit misleading.

I am also sick to death of this country's obsession with the awful American Idol, but I am almost equally tired of WWE's endless "Did you Know" segments that are nothing but glorified pats on the back. I mean, WWE.com is more popular with males 18-34 than oprah.com? Ya think? They're really starting to reach to come up with ways to congratulate themselves.

Kevin wants to try and take a tough stance when it comes to " Idol " , but the reality is he and Mrs. Ring Posts (not Shawn) are glued to the set . And don't try to call the Eck household . Not because they are too busy watching . But because their phoneline will be tied up with them texting in their votes :)

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm not making this up. If Idol happens to be on when I'm in the room, I leave.

I love wrestling, but I'm not embarrassed to say that American Idol ranks up there with WWE programming in my book. I think of it this way. American Idol is the Survivor Series of pop music except that it lasts five months. Actually, I think the earliest Survivor Series matches DID last five months.

.... so you're saying mrs. ring posts partakes ????

RESPONSE FROM KE: Unfortunately.

I am from India. And I didn't know that WWE is competing with American Idol in 18-34 male demographic. What next? They'll compare their 18-34 male demographic with that of tom and jerry cartoon show.
And yeah American Idol sucks. And so does Indian idol. Please somebody throw these shows out of television.

RESPONSE FROM KE: American Idol sucks in any language.

I think I once read that Simon Cowell co-produced WWE's "Piledriver" album back in the 1980's.

RESPONSE FROM KE: That's true. No wonder that album sucked.

I'm not an "Idol" fan , or of reality shows in general , but Kevin I have never seen you comment so vehemently on a topic !

A 40+ man whose life revolves around grown men in there underwear pretending to have a fight shoudn't cast aspersions on anything.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I think you mean "their" underwear.

While I have absolutely no room to talk , Luke , your comment made me LOL !
Kevin , was my use of "your" correct , and was my spelling and punctuation okay ? :)

Good catch, nice to see that Dundalk education paying off. Now go take notes on 2 men in their underwear pretending to have a fight.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Why are you reading a blog about men fighting in their underwear if it is so beneath you? It seems one of us has an obsession with men fighting in their underwear, and it's not me. Now go read The Sun's Reality Check blog with all the other real men.

I am 43 and watch both wrestling and American Idol. I can't speak for the 18-34 segment but it sounds like you all might be surprised at the number of over 40 males that watch American Idol.

I know it's classified as "reality" TV but where's the reality? I don't have weekly singing competitions in my house. It's really a game show and America has loved game shows (and other forms of competition) since the first days of television.

We also love underdog stories. American Idol is like the Rocky of singing. Some unknown is plucked from nowhere and given the chance to be a star.

"I think you mean "their" underwear."

Listen to Kevin, Luke. "Their" is a possessive determiner while "there" is an adverb.

their , there , they're . my mind is spinning .
I'm a 50 year old that enjoys wrasslin' and hope to enjoy it for another 30 yrs. or so .

It should be beneath any man with an ounce of dignity. Kids if you see a grown man taking notes while watching wrestling, point your finger at him and laugh hysterically.
