Who’s left for The Undertaker to face at WrestleMania?

I watched the tremendous Undertaker-Shawn Michaels match again and it got me thinking: Who will be Undertaker’s opponent next year at WrestleMania?

There aren’t that many big-name stars left for the man with the 17-0 record at WrestleMania to face. In addition to Michaels, Undertaker has already been matched up with Triple H, Randy Orton, Batista, Edge and Big Show.

I can only think of two main-event-level stars on the current roster who haven’t wrestled The Undertaker at WrestleMania. One is Chris Jericho, but I’m not sure anyone would be able to suspend their disbelief enough to think there was even a slight chance that Jericho would win.

So that leaves John Cena.

While Cena and Undertaker have faced each other a few times, they have never had a program together. It has to happen at some point, so why not on the biggest stage of them all?

I have a feeling that Undertaker is going to retire with his undefeated streak in tact, but could you imagine how much heat Cena would have if he turned heel and ended the streak? That would be one of the most memorable WrestleMania moments ever.

As for Michaels, the same question about who is left to work with at WrestleMania also applies to him. I think he and Rey Mysterio could steal the show, as could he and Edge. John Morrison would be a long shot, but it would be a great rub for him to face Michaels at WrestleMania.

However, if next year’s WrestleMania is Michaels’ last, as has been rumored, his opponent would have to be someone special. Triple H immediately comes to mind. Given their long history together, the story line almost writes itself. It's been a few years now since they faced each other, and there also would be a good chance that Triple H could finally get his WrestleMania moment.

I'd love to see Undertaker-Cena at next year's Wrestlemania. It's probably the biggest dream match they have left. I know they wrestled in 2003 but they haven't crossed paths since Cena became a permanent fixture in the main event. Undertaker and Jericho should feud at some point this year as they've never feuded before.

I would be shocked if HBK's last match wasn't with HHH. HBK has already given HHH his best matches since HHH's first quad injury. I think HHH knows that HBK is his only hope of getting that WM moment.

I'd love to see Undertaker vs Jeff Hardy

HBK vs Morrisson has to be the best way to build him as a recognisable big name

Hey Kevin

How about Jeff Hardy? He and Taker had that awesome ladder match at Raw years ago. And he defeated Taker at a Smackdown last fall. Put these two in a gimmick match with ladders with a title on the line and it would really steal the show. Imagine Taker being defeated without being pinned at Mania. Well you know that won't happen, but that would be a big sell to promote the match.
Or how about money in the bank? 7 other guys not only looking to get a title shot, but defeat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania.

Depending on how much longer UT stays around, Cena is the obvious choice. Jericho would be great, but I agree with you on the suspense angle. Speaking of which, if/when he eventually comes back, Kurt Angle could be a nice opponent. Again, if UT sticks around long enough for Jack Swagger to develop, he could be a potential opponent.

Remember those matches Jeff Hardy had with him a while back, they were pretty awesome, though as with Jericho, the suspension of disbelief thing comes into play.

A Shawn Michaels/Triple H match in Micheal's last Wrestlemania? That would indeed be an amazing match, and as you stated, the storyline almost writes itself as the two have so much history to go back on.

Could be HHH for the sake of the moment but no smart mark would believe that H would be the streak killer.

My bet is that it would be Cena. He is enough for the casual to question ending the streak (which is all the WWE needs to get pay per view buys). But of course he would'nt pull off the win. Cena would make a nice addition to the UT's resume

If the WWE would work the "Lengend Killer" angle more, a Orton/Taker part two would work great.

Kev... Its time for Cena to start a nice long program with UT... have all sorts of UT special matches like Casket and all that... Build up Cena as a stong contender!!!

And am with you on the DRAFT... the only thing that I am excited abt is to see what happens to Vince!!!! :))

I actually thought about this when WrestleMania ended last week. I came up with the same results as you.

My first choice for Taker would be Cena, but I had Taker turning heel instead of Cena. I personally would like to see Taker turn heel once more and defeat Cena at WM26.

The obvious choice for HBK is Triple H(who probably considers WM25 his shining WrestleMania moment). I think they would have a great match and it makes perfect sense. John Morrison or Shelton Benjamin would be my next choices.

1st superstar
I agree! Undertaker and Cena haven't faced a lot and they're matches have been very much back and forth, intriguing encounters. Undertaker and Cena should definitely face at a WrestleMania. After all, Austin handed Cena a beer in hopes that he would guide the WWE as the new generation. So I can't disagree with you there.

2nd superstar
I would actually like to see a feud between Umaga and The Undertaker. Although I don't think Umaga should be the man to retire The Undertaker, I think these two should face at the following WrestleMania. Umaga has a lot of speed and has been built up very well as an unstoppable heel, with the exception of his recent comeback in which he was making efforts to become a face which totally took away from his manic persona.

Let's thank our lucky stars Umaga has only been back a very short time before yet another absence. He needs not to be trying to be a face with fans. I mean, the fans can cheer him all they want but Umaga shouldn't act like he cares like he was doing. He should just go on being manic and insane like he used to and ignore the fans. That gimmick he has just doesn't work when he stands around gazing out into the audience for cheers.

Just looking at Umaga's past, he has clean victories over Kane (which I don't know how big of a deal that is these days) and has absolutely mauled some big names like Cena and HHH.

3rd superstar

I don't feel Cena should retire The Undertaker. I feel that each legend (Shawn and Taker) should push their own young talent when they leave. Austin's was Cena, so Taker and Shawn should have 2 other individuals. I feel Undertaker should push CM Punk, Mr. Kennedy, or MVP. I see so much potential in these three superstars.

CM PUNK
Some people may disagree with me on this, but Taker and Punk had great chemistry in the Royal Rumble match and it seems Punk is a superstar Taker greatly respects. However, I am bias since Punk is one of my favorite athletes. Mr. Money in the Bank vs. The Streak (shades of Mr. WrestleMania vs. The Streak). I think Punk should also go heel. Ever since WrestleMania fans have been upset that he won. He could end up being the best heel ever and easily generate heat my going on and on about how he won twice in a row and hating on fans like he doesn't care if they don't like it.

I think Rey Mysterio is a very interesting possibility. Health is obviously the key for him.

My pick:

Kurt Angle. I think he'll rejoin the WWE this fall. Angle,Taker, and HBK are the three best "big match" wrestlers in the business.

"but could you imagine how much heat Cena would have if he turned heel and ended the streak?"

There is such a thing as too much heat. For me, that scenario would generate a turn-off-WWE-for-six-months degree of heat.

I want the streak to remain intact unless Undertaker is matched with the next Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, or Rock. The ultimate put-over should be reserved for only the next mainstream icon.

I think the WWE is wasting Kane as a monster ...could go for a retro feud ..Kane/Taker join forces initally then ..Kane resumes his "problems w voices in his head" and they face off at Wrestlemania ...Cena - Undertaker would be good only if its for the title ....same as would like to see a DX reunion followed by a "breakup" ..last match at Wrestlemania - (ala Zybsko - Sammartino or Savage -Hogan type) their prev clique of Hall, Nash would have to be involved - what you think Kev?

I think a better option for Taker and Micheals is for them to have a rematch and let Shawn win. People would accept it if they knew it was his retirement match. (I wanted it this year, but apparently I was in the minority.)

I've got a feeling though that it will be HHH given their long history both as friends and in the storylines.

In the meantime, Shawn should work programs with Mysterio, Morrison and Shelton Benjamin (remember that great Raw match a few years back)

If John Cena goes against Taker wat WM26, he'd have to turn heel, because he'd be booed out of the building anyway. If Cena won as a heel - you're right, he'd have mega heat, but I think if WWE mindlessly keeps him a babyface and he wins, Cena would never recover.

"[C]ould you imagine how much heat Cena would have if he turned heel and ended the streak?"

First impression, it sounds good on paper. It would be great to see the Undertaker use his streak to put somebody else over, on his way out the door. I agree with you (and Jim Ross) that it won't happen, but what an incredible tool that would be.

Part of me still thinks Hulk Hogan should never have turned (back) heel. I'm skeptical about Cena doing it; but that's exactly the sort of monumental moment that could make it work.

Re the other match: John Morrison hasn't impressed me. But there's a stagnance in WWE today, coming from a feeling of interchangeability at the top. The same guys have been main-eventing for too long, exacerbated by having main events (PPVs) too often. Triple H and Edge are among that group, but John Morrison isn't. Having any new blood in a main event, even Morrison, might attract me to buy a PPV.

Kev , as much as I would like to express my opinion on this , I must defer .
A certain someone whose name begins with an R , and ends with a Y , feels I comment too much .
I just wanted to make that comment :)
** any seats left for Sunday Kev ? **

RESPONSE FROM KE: There are still seats left for TNA Lockdown bus trip to Philly but deadline is fast approaching

Can you answer a question my brother and I were discussing? Mainly when a wrestler retires, it is legend that they must lose the match on their way out. Any truth to this and could this play into Undertaker's streak?

RESPONSE FROM KE: They don't have to lose. There are examples of both. Flair lost; Verne Gagne won. Terry Funk ... well he has had so many retirements, I've lost track.

I don't want a program between Cena and The Undertaker. The prospect of Cena cutting promos on 'Taker has too much potential for stupidity.

Ha! I called this a couple of post's ago, Cena vs. Taker at WM XXVI. I'm not claiming to be some wrestling genius, it was just a process of elemination. He's gone thru every other "name" and an UT/ Cena feud would be something else! I'm sure the streak will never be broken but if anybody's gonna do it, it'll be Cena. He's gonna be the face of the company for alot of years to come. Jericho, and as I've commented before, Mysterio would be intresting match up's for Taker, however not really WM worthy.
Intresting comment about HHH/HBK and the storyline that's already there.
I would rather see HBK put someone over instead. Morrison is the first to come to mind. Jeff Hardy doesn't really need putting over but I always thought him and HBK in a ladder match would be incredible! The two men who are synonymous with the ladder match. "The man who put the Ladder Match on the map vs. The man who revolutionized the Ladder Match!" That's dramma buddy!!

Regarding Cena turning heel: Are there examples of wrestlers who are popular with kids turning heel since WWE became a virtual monopoly? Or, are there examples of such wrestlers turning heel in the old days within the same promotion? Hogan was popular with kids but he left the WWF for the WCW before turning heel.

I would think it would be a tough thing to pull off. Just look at how many kids wear Rey Mysterio masks. How would they react if Rey were to turn heel?

I think it should be Jericho. The suspension of disbelief wouldn't really come into play. Nobody really believed Mark Henry would win did they? Or Show and Albert. As long as the match is good and they show Jericho as being near the same level as Taker I'll be a satisfied customer.

I can see two good Wrestlemania feuds for Undertaker:
Cena - as you mentioned
Triple H - yes they met once at Wrestlemania (and it was an incredible match) and it could work again. I would add a stipulation that would lend itself towards sledgehammers appearing.

As for Michaels, I would enjoy seeing him against Jeff Hardy

i can see the Undertaker facing John Cena this Wrestlemania.

i know this is very unlikely but wouldn't it be wicked if AJ Styles signed with WWE and he faced Shawn Michaels this year. i think we all know that this match would be PHENOMENAL!!

These two are the best in ring performers right now.

the biggest dream match that is available really

I think we may get a rematch of HBK and Taker at WrestleMania next year. It's easy to promote it as the rematch of the greatest Wrestlemania match ever.

I think that match and a unifcation match to crown one WWE Undisputed champ would be enough to make WM 26 a classic.

For me, suspense of disbelief has never really been an issue with Taker. I mean did anyone ever really think Mark Henry was going to win few years ago! I personally think a Jericho fued would be the best bet for him, Jericho could get any angle over on the mic and can hang with the best in the ring. A strong push now he's on Smackdown and big wins over top talent in the coming year would make him a prime candidate.

For Michaels I think a WM match with Edge would be fantastic. Maybe a ladder match with a World Title on the line. These two have never had a prolonged fued and are two of the best workers in the world. I think this will be HBK's last year as a regular performer but I think he'll go part time and wrestle on an irregular basis after next years Mania.

Mr. artist formerly known as jack in hebron,

I have absolutely no idea who you could be talking about... I don't know who could feel that way... :)

i think a great wm 26 match would be a fatal four way with takers bigest victims(HHH,Batista,HBK,or maybe Kane), or to make the hype enormous how a bout a battle royal with every one of Takers victims that are still wrestling and maybe even swing some retired stars like Stone Cold and the Rock, i think that would make for the greatest wrestle mania ever, also try adding a title opportunity or like a money in the bank contract, or to make it even better, the Undertakers contract, that would be the most memorable Wrestlemania ever

i have to disagree with u on something i think if done right jericho/Taker at Wrestlemania could be great if set up in a simular way as Micheals/Taker if he is still using his legends baching gimmick what better Legend to take out than the streak. as far as Micheals if you have him and jeff hardy old school vs. new school maybe have Shawn mentor Jeff around late december and then turn on him about amonth before wrestlemania and Shawn gets so cocky and tells him if he cant beat jeff he will retire and build it from their anyway I don't think HHH needs a wrestlemania i think he already has 1 coming back from his injury as a face and defeating Jericho for the Title is as close to a momenrt that i think he needs or wants. also you could probably put matt hardy/Shawn to with Matt being upset feeling like he's being held down for all these years and a win vs shawn cwementing his status as 1 of the best.

I hope that 'Taker has atleast 3 matches in him to make his record 20-0.
My personal choices would be Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy and Shane McMahon (with the whole McMahon family out to get 'Taker and with 'Taker winning and retiring in a huge pyro-involved WrestleMania moment).

It's funny, for as much as I bury guys that didn't put someone else over on the way out (i.e. The Rock), I don't want to see Taker lose his last WM match. I give guys like The Rock a hard time since he left early in his career. Taker has done it all and there's simply no one that needs to take the torch from him (i.e. Cena, HHH) or that deserves that honor yet (i.e. Swagger).

It made sense for Flair to lose his last match since he was playing a sympathetic underdog for years at that point. I think Undertaker needs to end in some kind of blaze of glory. He's had some of the most remarkable comeback buildups with the vignettes, pyro and effects, that when he goes out it can't be a defeated phenom crying mid-ring hugging and shaking hands.

Personally, I think he should offer to sell his soul if he can win the WWE Title one more time and once he does, there is a larger than life moment when the druids come out and he knows he has to go with them down the ramp for his Last Ride.

I have a hunch that next year's WrestleMania will see Mr. WrestleMania win his "last" major title. They could build a great story around it and Arizona would be fitting enough since he was born there. Sure, his family moved before his first real memory but WWE mentioned it several times in his June 2004 title match on RAW from Phoenix.

I don't think there's anything more suitable for Mr. WrestleMania to do in his last WrestleMania than win the championship (especially if he would still wrestle after WrestleMania 2010, just lighten up his schedule).

Ray - No hard feelings here , it's all in good fun . But now if we're keeping count , you've.........
- Join the crowd ! :)

I'm not sure that I'd have a different opponent for Undertaker so much as a different prematch setup.

Undertaker has successfully challenged for a title three times at Mania but never wrestled there as a defending champion.

undertaker vs million dollar man jr.... father brings in a monster- son ends the streak storyline.

Michaels could wrestle hornswaggle and it would be a classic, thats how good hbk is

I still feel, that WWE missed a trick or two, when Undertaker defeated Edge last year. The streak makes no purpose unless it is broken at some point. Edge should have been the winner, last year cuz it would have brought Edge (who's already such a great performer) into the league of Austin and Rock (I feel these 2 are the greatest WWE superstars ever.Mind you, I said superstars and not wrestlers)
s far as his next opponent goes, I too feel that it should be either between Jericho or Cena.

Sadly,
I like the concept of Taker Cena, but, I think that there has to be that one new comer that comes to the WWE and just makes an immediate mark. Having beaten the Undertaker in his first attempt ever. Once you get that you could have a one year chase between the two that goes to the next Wrestlemania as a erase the blemish match that gives Taker a chance to re -write history(i.e. erase the bad match from the history lessons and not release a DVD sale with that match on it anywhere).

WWE is fake so the streak stays in tact.
Who would have ever imagined that HHH and Stephanie would have come out of the closet with a story line so diverse as the one being run with him and Orton. Sadly, since the Undertaking of Stephanie's soul and the Rattlesnake saving her this has possibly been one of the better storylines in recent years. Who cares about Edge. He has been pushed on us for so long that I never liked his individual skill to begin with. Some guys are just meant to be tag teamers. HE and Christian were two guys that should never have been broken up.

i just wanna say that it is pretty obvious that undertaker and cena will face each other at WM26. firstly it will boost the ratings. there can be three possible endings regarding the character of the phenom.1) he will beat cena and retire or dissappear .2)cena will beat him but undertaker will mysteriously vanish. theirs 99% chance for the first one to happen. one topic i want to brought up is what has happened to cane he was one of the most toughest and lovable and feared wrestler of all time but after his mask removed his popularity has sunk as well his game. if cane can become like once he was then bury alive match between UT and cane will be the ultimate

I could be mistaken, but it kind of seems as though their setting up an Undertaker vs. Mr. Macmahon match for WM26. Eventually Taker will figure out that Mr. Macmahon has been making the calls instead of Teddy Long.

undertaker vs
18-0 wm26 jeff (taker def whc)

19-0 wm27 (c)jbl for us title

20-0 wm28 rko,henry,batista, edge,hbk,jeff,jbl& punk (mitblm)

21-0 wm29 cm punk (RR win) &(c) mysterio (in a triple threat for whc) (takers mitb cash in)

22-0 wm30 Chris Masters (taker def whc)

23-0 wm31 jerico & big show triple threat elimination match for whc (taker def)

24-0 wm32 great khalis ic for takers whc

25-0 wm33 john cena (taker def whc)

Everything about the above statement is wrong. Chris, please don't do drugs.

WWE is so limited with their main event talents nowadays. I say have Taker start a feud much like he did with Orton, with a young rising star, and feud with that wrestler throughout the year. Ted Dibiase Jr, Dolph Ziggler, etc. Y2J and Undertaker would be great, however if you saw what WWE did they ruined a great hyped match by putting it on Smackdown. Cena vs Taker would be a HUGE attraction, but they should save that for when things really become hard, I would like to add if they ever do a Cena vs Taker at Wrestlemania I would like the match to be the ending match of their feud, or just a one time thing. Like how Taker did it with HBK, they stole the show at Wrestlemania and 8 months later if they were to start a program with eachother I would love to see it, and not get bored.

Guys, I hate to say this (mostly to Chris and anyone who watched Smackdown through September). Jeff Hardy is sadly gone. He will not face Undertaker and WM26, sorry.

John Cena seems likely, I say:

-2 FU's
-Undertaker wins by "Hell's Gate"

Just keeping ya posted!!
