Thoughts on WWE draft

The biggest surprise on Raw’s three-hour draft special Monday night was that no one attempted to snuff out Vince McMahon this year.

The draft itself was basically a repeat of last year’s version in that stars from Raw and Smackdown switched places, while ECW garnered just one pick. At least one world champion always seems to change shows, and this time it was WWE champ Triple H, who – as most expected – moved back to Raw after a 10-month stint on Smackdown.

The addition of Triple H to a roster that includes world heavyweight champion John Cena means that Raw now has both world champions. That situation will be rectified if Smackdown’s Edge defeats Cena for the belt at the Backlash pay-per-view on April 26.

After U.S. champion MVP was drafted to Raw and women’s champion Melina was sent to Smackdown, it was predictable that Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio would then go to Smackdown and divas champion Maryse would end up on Raw.

Chris Jericho going to Smackdown was a no-brainer because he’s done about all he can do on Raw.

A lot of people saw the John Morrison/Miz split coming, but I’m a little surprised that Miz is the one who got promoted to Raw while Morrison is staying put on ECW. A move that I didn’t see coming was Matt Hardy leaving Smackdown for Raw. Since the Hardys feud is still going, that doesn’t make sense to me.

Overall, I think Raw made out the best. While the brand lost Jericho, it gained Triple H, which means that money players Triple H, Cena, Randy Orton, Batista and Shawn Michaels are all on the same show. Raw also picked up another main-eventer in The Big Show.

The top of Smackdown’s card now has Edge, The Undertaker, Jericho and Jeff Hardy. Money in the Bank winner CM Punk, who comes over from Raw, could be in line for a nice push. Also moving from Raw to Smackdown are Rey Mysterio and Kane. Those two, along with Umaga, fit in somewhere between the upper mid-card and main event levels.

Although ECW landed just one pick (Vladimir Kozlov), it only lost one (The Miz), so the brand wasn’t weakened. I thought for sure ECW was going to lose Christian, but it appears that he is staying put. Of course, we won’t know everything for sure until after the supplemental draft is completed Wednesday. That’s when ECW will most likely acquire some talented mid-carders who are currently lost in the shuffle on Raw and Smackdown.

Once all the drafting is over, I will be interested to see if WWE stops having wrestlers appear on shows other than their own.

Here’s a look at each brand’s acquisitions Monday night:

RAW
Triple H (from Smackdown)
The Big Show (from Smackdown)
MVP (from Smackdown)
Matt Hardy (from Smacldown)
The Miz (from ECW)
Maryse (from Smackdown)

SMACKDOWN
Chris Jericho (from Raw)
Rey Mysterio (from Raw)
CM Punk (from Raw)
Kane (from Raw)
Melina (from Raw)

ECW
Vladimir Kozlov (from Smackdown)

NOTE: I will post more thoughts on Raw later on Tuesday.

I'm disappointed, yet again, for Christian.

At the time of his WWE return i expressed my concern for his career as i saw his placement on ECW as another sign that Vince will never give the guy a genuine push.

Many believed that he'd move to one of the main shows within weeks, and even more expected him to come across in this draft, yet he's still wallowing in ECW.

I don't blame Christian for making the move as he wanted one last chance to become a main eventer in the WWE, but i do wonder if he's regretting giving up everything he had in TNA (a top spot, a chance to work long, quality matches and a far lighter workload).

I hope VInce finally gives him the push he thoroughly deserves, but i have a feeling the return to WWE will end badly.

One serious question. Doe's The Miz have photo's of Vince with a Goat??? I mean The Miz on Raw..... Seriously????????

I was hoping for Christian to move over as well but once they showed the first commercial for the triple threat match on ECW it pretty much guaranteed him, Finlay, and Dreamer were safe. Hopefully Christian gets eliminated from the title hunt tonight and gets drafted tomorrow. Christian being on a show with credibility is better than him going on to be ECW champ.

And only a few more days until the Lockdown trip!

It's really difficult to truly assess the draft until after the supplemental draft on Wednesday. No established main eventers will move on Wednesday, but even solid mid-card wrestlers who might get a push could come then. We could see Morrison move to Smackdown, where he could get theoretically get a push, DH Smith could move to Raw to set-up for his return, or even other choices we aren't even thinking of. At this point I highly doubt they will be moving Christian, though they should, because of the look he exchanged with Kozlov, and the new opening graphic being almost 50% Christian.

I was upset by the Matt Hardy move to Raw, but in further reflection it makes sense. Raw lost Kane, but gained Big Show. However it also lost Jericho and gained, HHH? A heel for a face? You now have a show with Michaels, Cena, HHH, Batista, and only Orton and Big Show to contend with. I could be wrong, but I'm hoping that this means they plan on Matt Hardy being a major heel on their biggest brand. Sure, he won't be holding the title, but it's better than being the face of ECW, a role that Christian now seems delegated to.

Yeah, the boys in blue got shafted (again). Now that Raw has quartered both big title championchips there isn't much to wager on Smackdown anymore.

I mean, Mysterio and Kane are fantastic (hey, BOD might make some plays), but we lost some high up players to Raw. I'm just glad we kept the Undertaker at best.

I didn't think there was anything too unpredictable during last night's draft. I would have rather seen Christian and Morrison go to Raw instead of Miz and Matt Hardy though.

I'm really getting tired of the Hunter/Orton feud. There is nothing likable at all about Hunter as a babyface. Their match at Mania sucked so bad, I don't need to see it again. Shocking the insecure son-in-law gets shoved down our throats the last two weeks, but hardly a mention of Taker and Michaels who tore the house down.

There is one other way the title could change hands to Smackdown. CM Punk could cash in. I would rather see Christian convince CM Punk to put the briefcase up in a match, Christian wins and then takes the title and feuds with Edge.

I read that the Strecther Match was the blow-off to Matt and Jeff's current fued.

RESPONSE FROM KE: If that's the case, Jeff sure does look bad. His brother basically tried to kill him, cost him the world title and then beat him in two high profile matches.

I didn't realize Triple H was still considered a Smackdown wrestler; he had done nothing but appear on Raw for weeks leading up to Wrestlemania.

Hey Eck...
With the Miz going to RAW instead of Morrison, it may be a basis for them to start a program together. Morrison could come off as jealous because he is obviously the more tslented of the two.

I hate to admit that I do sometimes check out other wrestling sites (boo, hiss, I know) and a few have said that the stretcher match could have been the blowoff to the whole feud and maybe the draft keeps them apart a while. It kind of made sense to me since I still don't think Matt was supposed to be the one revealed to have been behind the attacks. I've given up hope that they plant seeds that far in advance of a turn anymore. I think it was more like they realized people would be pissed if they didn't mention them as part of a story eventually. I think Matt's accomplice went the way of Manu and Snuka's spots in Legacy. Once they scrapped the accomplice plan (which could have had a Rumble reveal and NWO match that leads to the Matt reveal), I think that's when the whole writing effort behind the feud hit the wall and they just wanted it over.

Also, the other GMs had no interest in actually being at the draft I guess or were they boycotting that they were about to get hosed?

Do you think that the match between Miz and Kingston was a great back and forth match that gave both a big push? The midcard matches should all be like this.

Good picks I think. Smackdown has been weakened in terms of big names, but now we're guaranteed to see Edge and Jericho (my two favourite and arguably two best performers in WWE) featured heavily every week. Punk does indeed seem destined for a main event push and I also like the fact there will be a decent place for Kennedy when he gets back, as well as opening up opportunities for Kendrick and Shelton, both of whom I enjoy watching. I don't really find HHH, Batista, Cena (what up with his new accent btw? I'm not American, but I didn't know people from the north east spoke like that, a bit cringeworthy) or Big Show entertaining (in ring or on the mic), so I like the fact they have been put together on a show I don't have to watch. Maybe Smackdown could have done with 1 more name, keeping MVP perhaps, or getting a vet like HBK. I guess John Morrison or Kofi in the supplemental draft would be realistic.

I thought the draft was horrible this year. Some moves made no sence (Matt Hardy?? The Miz???) while others it seemed like they didnt make a big deal out of...when a brand is losing their champion, whether it be US, IC whatever, they should really be making a bigger deal about it, and the announcers werent. I remember last year when HHH was drafted it really felt like a big deal, and this year it was like "Eh, whatever"...and why would certain wrestlers want to win their match, gaining new people on their show that they now will compete with to get gold?? Wouldnt Christian want to lose, so ECW can lose another wrester, hence making it easier for him to be champ??

I also laughed at 2 things...each wrestler looked happy to win, until the drafted wrestler was anounced and came out, then they looked pissed...and how did the drafted wrestler get to the stage so fast?? Arent they all in the locker room watching on a monitor? It wouldtake at least 30 seconds for them to make their way to the ramp, not 2 seconds...that was dumb...

If I was running WWE, I would have done it this way...open the show w/ Vince in the ring saying the reason for the draft is too many people are jumping brands and showing up on shows they shouldnt be. The only way you will be able to jump brands if you get traded throughout the year, or if you win the unified tag belts, which allows you to defend on any show. This would have shut all the internet people who are complaining about it not meaning anything, and also at the same time made the Tag Champs look like they mean something also, shutting up the internet people again. It would have made the draft seem a little more imprtant, and acknoledge that Vince knows wrestlers are just showing up on every show, and puts a stop to it. I would have marked out if he did that...

I know its easier said than done, but sometimes I feel like I can write a much better show than the current writers are!!!

I LOVE JOHN Cena

Edge winning the world heavyweight championship belt from John Cena at Backlash makes sense but the frequency of belts changing hands is getting a little ridiculous.

A lot of people (not including myself) seem to be booing John Cena these days. How do you think this will affect his character, if at all?

Will wrestlers from different brands wrestle each other on the Superstars show?

Kevin,
When discussing both titles being on one show, there was one angle you didn't mention. With C.M. Punk now on Smackdown, there is a definate possibility that we will have a Money in the Bank angle play out sooner rather than later.

RESPONSE FROM KE: It's a possibility, but they just did that last year. I think they need to come up with something else.

I personally think that the draft went well. John Cena and Triple H are on Raw so Raw has both titles. Since people expect John Cena to defeat Edge at Backlash, there should be a feud going sometime in the future.

12 major stars were suppose to be drafted - can you really consider MVP, CM Punk, The Miz, Maryse, Melina, and Vladmir major stars .. honestly these could have waited till the supplemental draft .. altough it was nice seeing The Miz turning on Morrison after Morrison cost him the match .. last night was 3 hrs 15 minutes of my life that I will never get back on top of the 4 hrs i wasted on Wrestlemania minus the 31 minute Undertaker / Michaels match. So my math shows WWE owes me and everyone else 7 hrs worth of quality programming

as always there is no shock that HHH comes home to raw i did see Matt leaving smackdown for it has been said by a lot of people that his feud with Jeff was gonna be short you did get jericho right I would have liked to see Cena go back to Smackdown though because now Raw is very top heavy with talent so the mid card guys are gonna all but gone from raw the draft sucks in a way because you know now that Edge is gonna win at backlash because it makes no sense at all for Cena to win because you can't have both titles on 1 show unless if cena finds a way to win then CM Punk comes in at the end of the match and cashes in MIIB which would be a great ending and then let him and Jericho fight over the World Title which i think would be a great program because there similar in style and size Rey moving is not a big shock either since the latino demo has dropped dince he left smackdown I don't think MVP is ready for Raw I feel the same way on Miz and Morrison i think the wrong guy went there although with that top heavy line up all miz is gonna do is job the majority of the time anyway I was hoping though that maybe Kofi would go to smackdown because with you top guys in your face line up HHH,Cena,Batista,Shawn where is threr any room for any other faces to get pushed if MVP goes heel again he has a shot. but other than that i don't know ECW really got hosed they did have to do something with Vlady I thought he was gonna be released within the next couple of months but maybe they will just build him up slowly on ECW i think if they were smart give him a manager to make him more credible.

"A move that I didn’t see coming was Matt Hardy leaving Smackdown for Raw. Since the Hardys feud is still going, that doesn’t make sense to me."

I thought that Hardy would beat CM Punk (which did happen), and that Raw would receive Jeff Hardy with resulting draft pick (which didn't).

Speaking of Matt Hardy and Punk, it's a shame that Matt is no longer on Smackdown, for he and Punk could have had some tremendous matches. At least Smackdown picked up Jericho. He and Punk have great chemistry in the ring.

Morrison is now free to pursue the ECW title.

OMG i freacking loved the WWE drafts... i could watch it over and over and over again no joke....... and my favorite is john cena baby yea!!!!!! haha

I'm crossing my fingers that Jericho's issues with WWE Legends will continue in a rant on the next Friday Night Smackdown! -- only for him to be silenced by The Undertaker. Jericho/Taker is long overdue in my opinion.

The WWE Draft is a waste of airtime. Do you think it's pre-determined? The main reason I watch TNA, no matter how bad he gets at times. Vince's hand prints are not on it. WOOOOO

Kevin, what do you think they might do for Backlash? Right now they only have the 3 Title Matches slated (6-man tag for WWE Title, Last Man Standing for World Title and Swagger vs. Christian/Dreamer/Finlay for ECW Title).

Hardy/Hardy seems to be the only other active feud, so they must be throwing together another match for the PPV.

Could we see The Miz go after MVP on Raw for the US Title?

Why should we as fans give a crap about Smackdown or ECW, the WWE doesn't.

All I can hope is Jericho becomes the man on Smackdown.

I know its all contrived, but the fact the announcers tried to act shocked when the US Title went to Raw and then the IC went to Smackdown, same for Womens belt.

I think lost in this mess of a draft was a really nice showing by the All-American American. Kid can go in the ring. Nice little showcase. And the let's go Swagger chant in the back really made it for me.

That and Josh Matthews nose bleeding. Hilarious unintentional comedy.

"It's a possibility, but they just did that last year. I think they need to come up with something else."

Kevin, are you suggesting that Teddy Long come out on Smackdown Friday night and take the briefcase away from Punk?

"Hey, Our Bad Playa. Holla Holla!"

All my predictions came through, surprised that Christian wasn't moved, more surprised that UT is still on SD...the biggest surprise is that no-talent overrated glorified fan, "The Miz" getting on the A-show, which means I have reason to channel-surf the second his music plays.

I LOVE Mickie James!

RESPONSE FROM KE: Who doesn't?

To Michael Deff,

The management may know ahead of time, but the talent do not know who will be switching. That has long been admitted by many people. The talent find out right before hand so they do their wave on the ramp. Last year, J.R. had no idea he was moving to Smackdown. And of course the majoroty of starts are on RAW. It is THE flagship show.

I broke it down like this ...Who benefited most from the draft?
MVP- I think he'll finally get a main event push, but he has to go back to his cocky persona. If he does I see good programs with Cena, HHH and HBK.
Matt Hardy- I was really hoping that after Matt's name got called Jeff would be next and they would brawl off the stage but SD had already lost enough guys at that point. But he's put in a lot of time and I think his main event push is finally here. Good programs vs. HBK, Cena, Batista, HHH (all fresh match up's)
Call me crazy but Mike Knox could get a decent push out of this. RAW will need some heels.
Rey Mysterio- Matches with Umaga, Kendrick and Benjamin are intriguing and a program with Jericho will be a dream.PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, ONE MATCH WITH THE UNDERTAKER!
C.M Punk- Good programs with Jericho, Edge, Shelton, and if they turned him heel, programs with Rey, J.Hardy and Taker all have potential.
Sheton Benjamin-He's already proven he can have a decent match with Taker, could have some show stealers with Rey over the I-C title, maybe bringing back some prestige to that belt.Maybe a nice program with J.Hardy if they ever put the belt back on him.(Did somebody say Ladder Match?)
I'll reserve judgement for Kendrick and the ECW locker room until the supplemental draft Wed.
As far as all the "Peeps" crying over Cristian, be patient. He needs to just be his amazing self and his time will come. He's a GREAT worker who does face and heel work exceptionaly well. Vince will not waste that kind of talent, he's just getting spanked right now for jumping ship.Don't be suprised to see him come away with the ECW belt at Backlash.(I personaly hope they keep it on Swagger for awhile, many more intruging match up's with him.) Captin Charisma's time will be soon enough.
Sorry for the rant, but I think in the long run this draft is really gonna pay off. Alot of very good workers are gonna get some well deserved TV and PPV time.(I hope)

To Scott:

Thank you I did not know talent didn't know ahead of time, I appreciate that. But I think there would be a pretty good idea when Melina got drafted to Smackdown that Maryse would be going to Raw.

But as for the talent disparity why am I as a consumer/viewer supposed to support a show (both in viewing and live events) that is clearly minor league in terms of talent?

The same way as I say, why should I support the Pittsburgh Pirates when their talent in no way puts them to have any chance to seriously compete?

is it just me, or am i the only one who noticed that natalya fought on the smackdown side in the 6-diva tag match? why would she care if smackdown got a pick or not? i predict that cm punk will eventually cash in mitb, but i don't see wwe putting him over against cena so edge will win at backlash. for those questioning why miz turned on morrison after the match, it's because morrison cost him the match. when was the last time ricky ortiz was even on tv, let alone representing ecw in a match? i said it in the other post, but i believe kane and taker will either feud or kane will turn face and they will team sometime in the next year. i know it would seem weird for them to team up, but kane was doing favors for taker earlier in the year

"After U.S. champion MVP was drafted to Raw and women’s champion Melina was sent to Smackdown, it was predictable that Intercontinental champion Rey Mysterio would then go to Smackdown and divas champion Maryse would end up on Raw."

I had a different take on this. Given that they just unified the Tag Team belts, I had this idea that they would be unifying the mid-card belts and the divas belts. Given that there is a lot of cross-over anyway, I had a thought that they would try to pare down the roster, in light of the bad economy, to save some $$$ and an easy way to do that is to have fewer belts.

Obviously I was quite wrong in the end, but I thought it was an interesting concept if it were to happen...

Keep up the great work!!

A few people of mentioned the roster not being informed about about switching brands beforehand, but I think they did it differently this year - the Miz must have known because of the spot after the match, and they all got out on the ramp suspiciously fast.
