MVP raises his profile on Raw

The first episode of Raw in the (new) Age of Orton saw WWE champion Randy Orton’s venomous victory speech interrupted by an unlikely party crasher.

As Orton was cutting his promo Monday night, I kept waiting for Batista’s music to start playing. You knew someone was going to confront Orton, and Batista was the logical choice. To my surprise, however, instead of the opening strains of Saliva’s “I Walk Alone,” the sound of a ticking clock filled the arena and MVP appeared on the stage.

As usual, MVP was smooth on the microphone, and the crowd reacted to him. The verbal confrontation led to a non-title match between MVP and Orton later in the show. The match, which ended with Orton winning by disqualification due to outside interference, was pretty good.

I was happy to see that MVP did not get pinned. I wasn’t so happy to see Shane McMahon interfere in the match, however. More on that in a minute.

On his first night as an official member of the Raw roster, MVP came off looking like he can hang with the big boys. I just hope WWE follows up on it. With Shawn Michaels reportedly taking several months off and Triple H likely spending some time off TV as well, now is the time to give a guy such as MVP an opportunity.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I groaned when Shane O’Mac did a run-in during the Orton-MVP match wielding a kendo stick and attacking Orton with it. It was later announced that a match between Orton and Shane was signed for next week on Raw. I just don’t want to see these two wrestle each other anymore. Plus, Orton having to sell for Shane weakens his character. ...

The way Michael Cole kept talking about what a tremendous upset it would be if MVP beat Orton, you'd have thought that MVP was The Brooklyn Brawler. Conversely, Jerry Lawler did a nice job of putting MVP over as a legitimate threat. ...

The Batista-Big Show main event was pretty dull until Cena, selling the injuries he suffered at Backlash, limped onto the stage at the end. The announcers kept saying all night that Cena wasn’t there, which, of course, meant that he was. I wonder why Cena didn’t answer The Miz’s challenge earlier in the show. Perhaps he did not arrive at the arena until later. Or perhaps he was there but he aggravated his injuries by laughing uncontrollably when The Miz called him out. …

The Miz was tolerable when he was teaming with John Morrison, but as a solo act, not so much. The longer his promo went on, the closer my hand got to the remote. He did get in one good line when he mocked Cena’s “You can’t see me” bit by saying that no one can see Cena because his movies aren’t in theaters long enough. I’m surprised WWE allowed that one. …

So let me get this straight: Raw is now the home to both The Miz and Hornswoggle. What did I ever do to deserve this? …

It looks as if Matt Hardy, who suffered a broken right hand Sunday night at Backlash, is going to be doing the Cowboy Bob Orton gimmick of knocking his opponents out with his cast. Wrestlingobserver.com reported that Hardy’s doctor told him that he’d be out four to six weeks, but it appears as if Hardy is going to try and work around the injury. …

The Kofi Kingston-The Brian Kendrick match was fun while it lasted. Kingston’s star is on the rise, so I agree with him going over, but I hate to see Kendrick in a glorified enhancement role. His talent would be put to much better use on ECW. …

Why does WWE even bother with these eight-women tag matches when half of the competitors don’t get tagged in? Mickie James, Kelly Kelly and Maryse were among those who never got in the ring (Rosa Mendes was the other). …

Just wondering: Why is Vickie Guerrero the only general manager that doesn’t have her own entrance music? If she ever does, naturally it should start off with her screaming “Excuse me!”

Good job MVP. Just don't sanitize your character.

"Just wondering: Why is Vickie Guerrero the only general manager that doesn’t have her own entrance music? If she ever doe, naturally it should start off with her screaming [Excuse me]!” Is the theme to the TV show the View available?

Fell asleep on the main event. Oh well.

Hey Kev, great blog as always but 4:56AM you're working too hard get some sleep!
Raw was good liked MVP getting a push and hope it lasts. One thing that cracked me up i don't know if you got this in the US but in the UK we had clips from the European tour and when WWE was showing on a map where they went they showed Cardiff, Wales on the complete wrong coast of the UK about 200miles from where it actually is! oops they're going in november hope they learn where it is by then! lol

Kevin -

Off topic, but would like it to be one:

Do you, or does anyone else, remember, probably back in the 80's, when there used to be ads in the wrestling magazines about card or board/table wrestling games? They were I'm guessing probably dice activated and had charts to help determine the match results.

Does or did anyone have one of those games? If so, can you talk about them? How realistic were they and what wrestlers came with the games?

I am not talking about computerized or video games, just the table games.

Thanks.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I remember the ads you are talking about, but I never owned the games.

I'm interested to see where they take this "Anti-Cena" gimmick of the Miz.

I thoroughly enjoyed MVP's performance (I hope they don't screw this up).

Not a great sign for The Brian Kendrick as he was looking at the lights on his Raw debut.

How much weight has Matt Hardy gained?

But the Miz was the face of MTV for years!!!!

RESPONSE FROM KE: The last time I watched MTV on a regular basis, Martha Quinn was the face of MTV. I definitely prefer hers to The Miz. Actually, I prefer Beavis and Butthead's to The Miz.

Amazing that a wrestler can get electrocuted and appear the next day while punting knocks someone out for weeks.

i reaaly loved MVP getting over his wrestling has really improved and I was glad to see that he did not lose by pinfall like if it was one of the top faces in their who are injured from the last 2 backlash matches. It really doesn't make sense to me that Cena didn't comeout for the Miz but camr out for the show match I was hoping though that the Miz would have a picture of Cena on the Titan tron and do 1 of those dirt sheet mockeries that would have been hiarious. In your last sentence about Vickie you put in doe instead of does i think youve been reading me comments to much your spelling is starting to get as bad as mine.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks for the alert on the typo. That's what happens I guess when you post at 4:56 A.M.

Why can't WWE give some other guys something interesting to do the way they do Shane?

It really irks me the way the McMahon's dominate most every aspect of a publicly traded corporation like WWE . It has to have a tremendous stifling effect on any real new talent or ideas that might come into play otherwise.

I was hoping that with triple H off TV for awhile (presumably), that orton would finally have a chance to look strong. Instead, the first night of his new title reign has to be all about Shane McMahon. The worst part is it interrupted a good match between two of RAW's most most talented young wrestlers. I may just skip RAW next week, as I don't have the stomach to watch Shane dominate Orton again. I'll ask this again: who thinks that it's a good idea for the man who is supposedly the future of your company to continually get owned by a man twice his age who isn't even a wrestler? If Shane is having a mid-life crisis, tell him to buy a sports car!
I also have high hopes that they'll book MVP strongly from here on out (if only they could take the same approach with CM Punk). So is the US title now a RAW belt and the IC title a Smackdown belt? Considering the frequency with which those belts are defended, it may be months before we know for sure.

Brilliant promo by Miz. Most improved wrestler over the past year.

Awesome to see MVP involved with Orton. If he's not a headliner in a year or less, I'll be furious. All the tools to main event shows, whether as a face or heel.

Kofi keeps getting larger and larger pops from the live crowd. WWE is onto something with this guy.

The Miz isn't that bad.... at least festus wasn't on the show. Hornswaggle is awful though.

Actually, Kev, The Miz did get in another good line during his promo. He said he was tired of the same superstars being in the main event week after week. I don't know about you, but I think he speaks for most of the WWE fans right now.

Like you, I expected Batista to come out to interrupt Orton. But seeing MVP was a nice surprise. I never watch Smackdown, so last night was my first time seeing MVP on the mic and in the ring. He looks and sounds good (although that "Ballin' Elbow" is about as hokey as the "People's Elbow" or Cena's "Five Knuckle Shuffle"). Did MVP rub someone the wrong way to end up with the gimmick of losing every week back on Smackdown?

BTW, since WWE is going more "family-friendly" and they changed the name of Cena's finisher from the "FU" to the "Attitude Adjustment", when are they going to change the name of the "Five Knuckle Shuffle"? Or does no one in WWE remember what that is slang for?

WWE really needs to have a talk with its announce teams. This is the second time in a month where they have buried talent. First Grisham ripped Tommy Dreamer, then last night Michael Cole's comment about MVP. If you're trying to push a guy, don't say it would be a monumental upset if he would beat Orton. That is another way of saying he doesn't belong in this match and people shouldn't watch him perform.

I loved Miz's line about the same people main eventing over and over.

Kofi is a star in the making.

I thought MVP delivered one of his best promos to date. I was very glad that he didn't get squashed by Orton and Legacy. Maybe he is finally getting a well deserved push.

I have been wondering the same thing about Vickie's lack of entrance music. She needs something. She seems to be struggling a little on the mic, though. Lots of stumbles and delivering the same phrase a few times in quick succession.

I have this dreaded feeling that Hunter is going to use his Super McMahon recovery powers to return next week and save Shane from getting kicked in the head.

It looks like your hatred for The Miz is back

Kevin, I thought that you started to appreciate the Miz during these last months... And, like you said, with HBK and HHH out of the picture for some time, now is the perfect moment to show some new faces. I guess that the Miz's promo suits his cocky and at the same time a little bit coward persona: he arrives on Raw and first thing he does, he challenges Cena himself... pefectly knowing that Cena won't answer. Of course, this seems to lead to a squash next week... even if I thought we would see Charlie Haas dressed as Cena confront the Miz!

I had the same question about Vickie not having her own entrance music...

And after Batista's short promo on Triple H, looks like the Animal is not turning heel anytime soon. But Trips could come back after Vengeance as a heel willing to make Batista pay for his defeat, that would be fresh!

And you're not the only one who is tired of seeing Shane. There are lots of thing I hate about his character, but the worst is maybe this stupid little dance he keeps on doing, event when he is supposed to be intense.

One last thing. Am I the only one to be really annoyed when wrestlers (sorry, "superstars") make these strange useless moves before striking their opponents? I'm talking about Cena's raising his hand and doing his "U can't c me" routine, but Kofi and MVP do this type of things. It is especially stupid since they never get a pin after that...

I didnt watch last nite's show, but I had a thought...wouldnt Vickie be upset at Randy Orton for kicking HHH, thus injuring him, since he was such a big name for the draft? It's little things like that that I wish they would acknowledge more often...

RESPONSE FROM KE: Maybe she is happy he got hurt because of all those fat jokes he was making about her.

"So let me get this straight: Raw is now the home to both The Miz and Hornswoggle. What did I ever do to deserve this? …"

You worked for a different promotion, knocked many of their angles, you keep talking about TNA knockouts rather than the divas.... plus you're a critic... dude they hate you with a vengeance.

Anyway love your work Kev, keep it up!

Speaking of Vickie, she isn't half as good live as she is taped.

I agreed 100% with The Miz I cant see Cena because his movies arent in theatres long enough. I swear if Cena ever does that "you cant see me" crap in front of me I would take a swing and go well if I cant see you what did i just pop upside the head ..I do admit his CD is a great drink coaster though -

Since Beth Phoenix and Satino are no longer a "couple", sure would love WWE to do a Win A Date With The Glamzon contest

In response to Bradley on the wrestling board games, I'm proud to say I have the WWF Superstars dice activated game featuring individual cards for Big John Studd, Andre, Hillbilly Jim, Hulk, Magnificent Muraco, Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Ricky Steamboat, Tito Santana, Paul Orndorff, JYD, and Roddy Piper. The board is similar to Monopoly and and success is based on a wrestler's favorite hold like Hogan's leg drop amd Sheik's Camel Clutch. Of course luck is involved but predetermining the outcome was pretty hard. The Wrestling Challenge editon featured Earthquake, Mr. Perfect, Big Bossman, Jake the Snake, Million Dollar Man, The Model Rick Martel, Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man Savage and of course Hulk. This game with dice also had power cards which could affect the outcme but again wrestling holds played a big part in determining the victor. At that time, it was entertaning. Maybe they're still available.
And Bradley it makes sense these games were a 'Milton Bradley' product.

The Miz promo took years off my life.

While his wrestling has improved by leaps and bounds his mic skills have actually become worse. A bit of advice to the WWE with Miz on the mike: less is more.

Perhaps the reason Cena didn't come out to accept his challenge is because Cena had no idea who was in the ring.

Hi Kev, can you settle a question for me? "Santina's" entrance music was previously used for who? I thought it was Billy and Chuck, but my friend swears it was for a Diva. Any ideas? Thanks!

RESPONSE FROM KE: It definitely was used by Billy and Chuck. Not sure if a diva used it or not.

I usually catch a good part of Raw, but not Smackdown (though I follow it via your blog). It's hard to take MVP seriously with the breathe-right strip over his nose. The jumpshot thing is annoying, but I can handle it. But the strip has to go.

I am surprised to read about all the unhappiness in regard to MVP being sold as an underdog. Part of the announcers' job is to sell the match, and they do so by making the possible outcomes sound like a big deal. True, this philosophy can be taken too far. Jim Ross used to talk about how mid-carder X could pull off the upset against Main Eventer Y, and it sounded quite silly. However, describing the Orton-MVP match as a toss-up would have been silly, too.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I agree to a point. It's not a toss-up, but I don't think it's a "tremendous upset." Colin Delaney beating Orton would be a tremendous upset.

Vickie doesn't have entrance music because it would cut into her heat. When Chavo wheels her out in her chair, the entire crowd goes off more than they have for anyone since Vince was feuding with Stone Cold.

I think the Ballin' Elbow, the Five Knuckle Shuffle, and Kofi's Boom Boom Boom are all imitations of the People's Elbow, but if any of them had as much charisma as The Rock, they wouldn't have to rip off his moves to get over. Then again, he did still the Bookend from Booker T...

In reference to wrestling games & Mr Eli, I found a WWE Uno game at 5 Below.

You know what i'd like to see more of is more wrestlers wearing moon-vests. Just to make things a bit more interesting.

At least Shane, for the first time since this angle started I think, was actually armed during his run in.

Do you think Vickie forgot that, about 3 years ago, Orton made disrespectful remarks about her husband, the late great Eddie Guerrero, in an angle involving Orton and Rey Mysterio before No Way Out? Just a little weird.

Btw, last time i watched, wasn't Jamie Noble a face? Oh well, guess nobody really cares anyway.

I know Santina was the main focus in the Diva's tag match, but wouldn't it make more sense to have the bigger (perhaps better) Diva's in the ring?

Ortons's promo was very good and i was pleasantly surprised when MVP interrupted him. Hope he gets a push in the near future (mabye when Triple H returns to confront Batista about costin him the title?).

Another good, solid Raw and an excellent post Kevin.

Dustin and Eck, a diva did use that entrance music....Rico.(ha!)

Kevin - regarding your off the wall comment about Beavis and Butthead . -
Remember the episode where they commented on the Hulkster's video , "Real American". It's classic . On "You-Tube" of course .

I dig the imitations of the People's Elbow, I'll be honest. They could be way worse.

In regards to Santina's theme music: Didn't Rico and Jackie Gayda end up using that theme music after Billy and Chuck?

As far as Raw goes, I thought that the MVP angle was great. Reminded me of the April, 2000 episode of Raw when Chris Jericho beat HHH on a fast count to win the title (if only for a few minutes.) Great rub for MVP...hopefully it pays off later this year.

Good to see Shane'O Mac doesn't even have to lay a hand on a guy to kill all his momentum(MVP)....Good to see Orton no sell most of those shots with the Kendo Stick and get up immediatlly afterward...Anyone else think Matt Hardy should have some new music, what he has right now envokes a "Yeah, here comes Matt Hardy!!" kina vibe...And I hope he dosen't cut to many more promos where it sounds like he's about to cry, that will get old quick....Why couldn't the Kofi/Kendrick match end in some sort of no contest to set up a couple more rematchs...Why are only top tier guys aloud to be involved in feuds, a RAW only feud between two mid-carders would be cool. If they did well then they get a chance to shine on PPV.

I wish someone punt Orton .Oh wait for the Game,s return.

Hey Kev, great blog once again. In regards to Miz's line about Cena's movies, well, WWE has a a good record of poking fun at themselves.... remember the countless digs at the XFL by various superstars that wwe has allowed.

Shane-O-Mac again with the kendo stick?? Who does he think he is, "The Lethal Weapon" Steve Blackman?

It's scary how well Santino plays "Santina". Another funny skit from Santino. He rarely disappoints.

So, with WWE looking to promote some new guys... which I totally love with MVP and The Miz. How about R-Truth on Smackdown? I think Edge vs. Truth could provide some awesome matches.

I was really looking forward to Raw. Just coming off of a PPV with three new champs. New champs, new era, right? It started off good. Fell asleep though during Miz's diatribe. The last time I was that bored, was about four weeks ago and I thought Kid Rock was never going to quit singing. The only thing that kept me awake through that was the $50+ I was spending to watch it.

Years and years and years ago, I had one of those tabletop wrestling games. It was pretty neat and fun. If I remember correctly, your wrestler had moves and you called them and rolled dice and if you won the dice toss you got the move or hold and the rolled again for your next move and if the other player won the toss, he'd get the counter. After so many winning moves and winning dice rolls you could go for your finisher. What I remember most about the game was even though it was before Vince started trademarking everyone's name, they didn't used real wrestler's names. They used named like (and this will tell you how old the game was) Bruno Samaritan, Pedro Morality, Larry Seabiscuit, and Chief Jay Strongheart.

It would be cool if Strat-o-matic could get a game together like they do for all of the other sports. I love Strat-o-matic baseball and a Strat-o-matic wrestling would be the shiznit!

In response to Bradley - I have boxed game from the 1980s called Superstar Wrestling. Here is a link to a site with a description: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/11188

The game had profile cards for each of the wrestlers and you rolled dice against your opponent to reach an outcome in the match. It ususally took several rounds or rolling for an out come. Interestingly, my friend had a version with real wrestler names, but by the time I bought my version they had to remove the names and everyone was "Wrestler # 1, Wrestler # 4, etc. but you could still figure out who they were by their finish moves (e.g. Flair was the figure 4, Hogan the leg drop, etc.). What was fun about this game was you could have matches between the wrestlers in the different promotions (WWF vs. NWA vs. AWA) and decide for yourself who was better.

I may have to go dig that out of the closet now.

I literally said "wowwwwww" when the clock started ticking during Orton's promo. I think Vince has the opportunity to steal away what TNA was supposed to have going for it. Fans are DESPERATE for new stars and TNA had a monopoly on them and blew it ever since they got their TV deal (I think the pressures the TV brought TNA is what's killing their product).

Joe and Styles are locked in purgatory and Dixie Carter is too busy trying to legitimize TNA with veterans to probably ever get them to the level they could have been. If I'm Robert Roode, the chance of just getting the ECW title has to look pretty good compared to what's going on with a TNA original these days. Meanwhile WWE has guys that just need the exposure and generous booking to get their foot in the door.

So anyway, here's hoping the next surprise interruption on Raw starts with "Kennedy.....Kennedyyyyyyy."

Who else thinks that it would be a good gimmick for the Miz to challenge a different guy who's not there every week, and then brag about the unbeaten run he's getting and all the great scalps he's taken? This week Cena, next week Triple H?

Great idea Martin!

This comes from not a big fan of Shawn. RAW NEEDS SHAWN MICHAELS. This week's Raw was a snooze-fest except one segment. Thank you Miz.

just for one episode....every raw superstar should come out one at a time and get an R.K.O from randy orton, you know, juss for fun. N-way thats why pple like me will never get a job as wwe writers. Good blog Kev...never mind me, juss like heels a lot.

Does MVP wear the breathe right strip only for a fashion statement, or for a purpose? At least he is a man that can accessorize.

i am making a little match as a little first blood match to beat up cena

i will send a message to randy

i will be watching you a cm punk on a ladder match
