Live WrestleMania XXV blog: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker
The show has officially been stolen.
The Undertaker and Michaels more than lived up to the hype, putting on an instant classic and adding to both of their legends. The two veteran superstars took the sold-out crowd on an unbelievable roller coaster ride that culminated with Undertaker improving his WrestleMania record to 17-0 by scoring the pinfall after approximately 31 minutes.
They say there's no cheering in the press box, but I and my fellow journalists were marking out like crazy in the Reliant Stadium press box for this match. This was one of the best -- if not the best -- matches that I have ever seen live. The atmosphere was amazing, as a "This is awesome!" chant broke out at about the 28-minute mark.
The drama here was off the charts, even though deep down everyone knew that Undertaker was winning. Both guys kicked out of each other's finishers time and again. Michaels survived the Last Ride and a Tombstone piledriver, before succumbing to a second Tombstone when Undertaker caught him after an attempted moonsault.
The scariest spot of the match saw Undertaker attempt a dive over the top onto Michaels on the floor. Michaels pushed the cameraman in front of him at the last second, and Taker nearly landed right on his head.
In a not-so-subtle example of symbolism during the entrances, Michaels, clad in white, descended upon the stage from above, while The Undertaker, all in black, came up through the stage.

One of the best matches ever, beyond question.

thanks for the updates, would have loved to have seen this match. you've got one of the best jobs around. you are getting paid to do this.

Best Wrestlemania match ever. The build up, the entrances, the believable false finishes. Excellent.
I can't believe you buckled to the smarks' pressure and put Hogan #1 on your list.

you mean saved. Up until that match the show was an unmitagated disaster. The mitb was a step below the 4 previous ones in wm20-24.

Man this match was incredible and i wish i was there, i totally agree with u kevin that this may have been the best ever Undertaker match at wrestlemania, however if anyone was to break the streak i would have liked it to be Shaun Michaels, he is an amazing wrestler if not the best of this generation...

That match was unbelieveable. They had to look at each other mid way through and say,"We got em."

This match gave me goosebumps and had me on the edge of my seat the last 5-10 minutes. The feeling took me back about 30 years when I saw my first match between Billy Graham, who I loved and still think highly of, and Dusty Rhodes in Texas bullrope match. But the drama in this one was just amazing.
To your point, the entrances both set the tone and while taker always has a good entrance (he should have brought droids though), Shawn's was spectacular by adding the heavenly piece to it. Great, great match and Shawn is so Mr. Wrestlemania.

Greatest match ever!!
IMO, The Undertaker deserves to win.

Isn't Michaels the first person so far to not tap out to 'Taker's submission hold, the name of which escapes me at the moment? That was a helluva match, and my friend actually picked up the clicker to change the channel after it was over thinking that the show was over. We had a good laugh about that and said that Shawn lived up to his name and officially stopped the show for a moment.

Best match of the night!!!!
Posted by: Henry | April 6, 2009 12:36 AM
BY FAR the best match of the card. It gave U a little bit of everything. A INSTANST CLASSIC to say the least. After the match had ended I yelled at the t.v. Can yall do it again!!
Posted by: Michael | April 6, 2009 12:49 AM
I suppose asking for some restraint would be out of line. Here are the good things I have to say about the match: it stayed entertaining for much longer than I anticipated. Also, it was probably the best match of the night.
Some things I did not like about the match, and the reasons why I think it is wrong to classify it as an instant classic:
-There was NO psychology within the match itself. The closest the match came was showing UT looking frustrated after not getting a pin, but it didn't carry over into the action itself.
-Kevin referred to the Hardy match as a spotfest, which seems accurate, but this match was scarcely different. The two wrestlers spent the last 20 minutes trying to hit their finishers on one another. No move sequences, no combos, and the only wrestling came in the form of contrived counters.
-The top spot of the match- UT's swan dive- was ill-conceived. It seems like he wants to prove he can still jump every year. I watched WM XXIV's match against Edge a few days ago and noticed that Edge nearly had to lunge to get under UT to brace the fall. When I saw him running to get momentum tonight, I couldn't help but thinking he was doomed to miss. Classic matches don't botch their best moves.
-I was describing the match to a friend 20 minutes after it ended, and got the caught skin-the-cat confused with the caught moonsault. The best moves were extremely redundant.
-Kevin pointed this out, but it bothers me that it was extremely obvious that HBK would lose. Even if wrestling is scripted, I don't want to be certain of the result before it ends. Obviously, UT's streak has created this problem over the years. But I remember several instances where I had no doubt whatsoever about HBK's WM matches. It was obvious that it was his time to go over at WM XII, it was obvious that he was going to drop at WM XIV, it was obvious that he would not win the triple threat at WM XX, it was obvious that he would lose to Cena at WM XXIII, it was obvious that he would beat Flair at WM XXIV, and it was obvious that he would lose tonight. That leaves his matches with Angle and Jericho as the only ones that could honestly be described as thrilling. You could say that he does more to make these matches entertaining than others, but I'm not giving him credit for failing to sell the angle, which has always been my qualm with his character.

Damn. Everything you would expect. I can't believe that HBK has the best Mania-match every year. I think someone needs to adjust a certain Wrestlemania list. I literally jumped from my seat when Shawn kicked out of the tombstone. Unbelievable match and I'm watching it again on PPV as I type. This was a WrestleMania match.
And I was really scared when 'Taker landed on his head. That could've been bad. Thank goodness he's okay.

undertaker is the everlasting WWE star in the HISTORY of wretlemania....the UNBEATABLE
Posted by: Ashwin | April 6, 2009 2:36 AM
I'm gonna say I expected for Taker to win. I really didn't know what to expect. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest matches I have ever seen. That alone makes me do something I've never done; attend a WWE event.
Posted by: Khaotik | April 6, 2009 2:57 AM
Hey Kevin, I just wanted to get your thoughts during the spot where Shawn Michaels attempted a moonsault on Taker when he was outside the ring and missed. I thought he was injured legitly and that they were going to cut the match short, but as expected HBK was able to pull through. Do you think Shawn was rly hurt, or was it yet another great sell job by him?
RESPONSE FROM KE: It looked like a planned spot, so he was definitely selling. That doesn't mean that he couldn't have been really hurt as well.

Taker's match with HBK?! Where do I start? That was absolutely no-nonsense. Absolute no-nonsense! Those two know how to put on a show. Notice how the WWE had HBK come down from heaven and The Undertaker come up from hell. ROFLMFAO! This truly was like Satan vs. Jesus! That was brilliant. HBK also brought back that whole godly opposite gimmick we all loved. HBK was a little demon in this feud with The Undertaker, wasn't he though? LoL! Undertaker's a WrestleMania opponent not only give him a run for his money at the event but in terms of mind games surrounding th event as well. The 4th meeting between Undertaker and HBK was probably the best normal singles match of their careers. It's really hard to be creative without use of weapons and cells and these two matched their Hell in a Cell. For me, the beauty of the match was how they kept tricking out that audience. I won't lie they had me fooled to. They played mind games with the audience. LMFAO! The audience must have thought that match was going to end when it didn't like 9 or 10 times. Judging from this encounter, those matches they had over a decade ago would have gone on a lot longer. Yea, these two totally didn't disappoint. I loved the crowed involvement "HBK / Undertaker / HBK " I mean, the match was flawless. Did you see Undertaker try to do HBK's flying elbow? How the heck does he jump like that? Wtf! That's how he jumped back in the day. I didn't think he could jump like that anymore. LOL! That man can jump. Whoever thought they'd have one of the best matches of their careers at this stage in the game. Definite classic! I didn't think it be just as exciting as Hell in a Cell, but it was actually more exciting.

Also, I'd just like to add that I'm tremendously disappointed in Bret Hart for declining to induct HBK in the Hall of Fame. HBK recently mentioned that he would like Bret Hart to induct him in the HOF making it clear that he wasn't taking a shot at Bret but because he wants someone as honest as Bret and someone who would tell it like it is about him and his career. Bret Hart says and I quote "I don't think so. It's a bit of a stretch" Well, the fact that he had one of the best matches of his career tonight with The Undertaker should make him care less about one ridiculously bitter Bret Hart.

A bit of a spot fest, but overall an entertaining match up. Classic? No, it takes alot more than a few failed finisher attempts for me to label something 5*. Entertaining? Of course, but HBK and Taker put on a great great show, I just hope HBK doesn't recieve all the credit.

Well over rated match, both guys spent three quaters of it lying on the ground. A disapointing wrestlemania overall
Posted by: Seamus | April 6, 2009 6:39 AM
What a match!
I can't believe anyone would have a negative thing to say about this. In an age when WWE considers 15 minutes a long match, for these guys to go have 30 mins and have the crowd sewn up like that was awesome. Possibly the best WM match ever.
To the guy who saw no psychology...what match were you watching? These two are the company's best storytellers nd I thought the match was great on that level. The whole build up between these two revolved around competition, who's better? The match reflected that, with both guys unwilling to succumb.
I'm sorry but this match was damn near flawless, and even Japanese crowds don't get that into a match. WWE will struggle badly when these two retire.

After last night, it's safe to say that HBK is the number 1 Wrestlemania superstar of all time.
Shawn Michaels proved, yet again, why he is known as Mr. Wrestlemania.
Posted by: Jerichoholic | April 6, 2009 8:43 AM
By the way, did anyone see the face on the kid with the orange hair behind the wrestlers when HBK kicked out of the first tombstone?
CLASSIC!
Posted by: Bri on LI | April 6, 2009 9:02 AM
Andrew - I think 99.9% of the wrestling community completely disagrees with you there. It IS an instant classic whether you personally liked it or not and will go down in history as a great one.
Top-notch match, tremendous psychology, one of the best matches of this generation. Best match I've seen the triple threat main event at WM 20.
Posted by: Pimentel | April 6, 2009 9:20 AM
Actually Jeff, I am pretty sure Kozlov managed to escape the hels gate submission too by getting to the ropes in his first match against the undertaker.
Posted by: Wylsey | April 6, 2009 9:48 AM
I was there last night and HBK/UT were incredible. They worked the crowd like the pros they are.
The energy from the crowd probably got those guys thru the match. Unfortunately, the next two matches suffered from this one. Triple H was getting chants of "boring".
My son said HBK/UT would be an instant classic. He was definately right!
Posted by: Michael | April 6, 2009 11:08 AM
I could not agree with Andrew more. This match, although by far the best on the card, was NOT "the best match ever". LOL, are you people serious?? First of all, it was extremely anti-climatic b/c anyone with a brain KNEW Taker was gonna win. So all those "false finishes" by Michaels did not come close to fooling me, and anyone that knows wrestling should not have been fooled either. And the only false finish by Taker that got me was the first Tombstone. But these "both guys kicked out of each other's finishers time and again" spots at WrestleMania are getting OLD. It was awesome when they first did it with Stone Cold and the Rock back at like WM17, but now it's too predictable. Good match? Yes. Flawless? You got to be kidding. The best match ever? Not even close.
Posted by: B-Nice | April 6, 2009 11:23 AM
This was one of the best matches I've seen. I thought they'd maybe save undertaker vs hbk for the last match of the night. Seeing it in the middle, was like having dessert first.
Posted by: The Evil Orange | April 6, 2009 1:39 PM
It is so easy to take both of these men for granted (especially when their careers date so far back) but they are each truly special performers, and we fans will be at a severe loss when they leave the wrestling world.
So there is no need to wait until their Hall of Fame inductions to say it:
-"THANK YOU, SHAWN!"
-"THANK YOU, TAKER!"
-"THANK YOU, SHAWN!"
-"THANK YOU, TAKER!"

"To the guy who saw no psychology...what match were you watching?"
Perhaps I need to be more specific. When referring to psychology here, I'm talking about the psychology of the fight itself. The mindset of the fighters was well-built coming into the match, but the way they executed the match had little coherence. The "physical psychology" consisted of utilizing a long series of scripted finishers, which defeats the purpose of having a wrestling match. Instead of a match, they may as well have had a race to 5 finishers. A finishers-only match would have given them the same opportunity to do the same crowd interactions that we have seen for so many years, from Shawn's fake knee injury and nip up to UT's throat slash and sit up. The wrestlers prominently engaged sentimentality without creating anything or surprising anyone.
In any case, I do not mean to denigrate those who enjoyed the match. Those opinions are valid, even if it was not the type of match that I like the most. My comments only reflect my annoyance at the short term hyperbole (MATCH OF TEH CENTURY!!!!!11111), and an invitation to discuss the inevitable room for improvement.

Shawn Michaels outperformed The Undertaker. That's all I have to say!

I think this is a top 5 match of all time .Its the undertakers best match with out any gimmicks. Its in HBKs top 3 (vs Bret and Kurt) This match was the main event.

I personally was there in person and i was in suspense basically (you paid for the seat but you will only need the edge moment) i mean it was one of the nonstop matches and i knew i was witnessing history even though you have it in back of your mind undertaker is going to win ... i wanted to witness undertaker lose in person... considerin wrestlemania comes once a life time
