Top 25 WrestleMania stars: No. 12
JOHN CENA
WrestleMania history

20 (2004): Defeated The Big Show to win the U.S. title
21 (2005): Defeated JBL to win the WWE Title
22 (2006): Defeated challenger Triple H to retain the WWE title
23 (2007): Defeated challenger Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE title
24 (2008): Lost to WWE champion Randy Orton in a triple threat match. Triple H also was in the match.
Comments: Has wrestled in title matches in all five of his WrestleMania appearances, including four for a world title. Only Hulk Hogan, Triple H and Michaels have been in more world title matches at WrestleMania. … Delivered an FU to the 500-pound Big Show at WM 20. … Victory over Triple H by submission at WM 22 came as a surprise to many. … That match went on last, as did his title defense against Michaels at WM 23. … Returned earlier than expected from a torn pectoral muscle to participate in WWE title match at WM 24.
I will count down the top 25 stars in WrestleMania history every day through April 5.

Wow, really? I'm not a big cena fan myself, but Cena's draw has been the equivalent of austin and hogan. I thought he was at least a lock for the top 5....but no top 10!?

Giving a FU to the Big Show is not that impressive. Guys at my gym (including myself and I'm no pro athlete) can squat 500lbs and a FU doesn't even require going all the way down in a squat position.

I hope to God that the Ultimate Warrior is not in the top 10.

I'm glad you did not succumb to today's fan, and being the life-long fan that you and many are, and place Cena in the top 10. Cena was my #15 and the 11-15 range is appropriate for him.
My #12 is Snake Roberts. He was in 8 WM's going 3-4-1 but his storylines were always compelling for not being a part of the main event. Bringing out "Damian" at WM 2 drew big highlights in the non-Wrestling media, and I still chuckle about how afraid of the snake Andre was. As I said about Steamboat, a shame that feud didn't end at a WM.

This is a very good choice. John Cena withiin few years has made a great impact at wrestlemania. I would have kept him in top 10. But then, 12 is okay, I guess. He maybe subjected to many "you can't wrestle" chants but one thing is for sure. He has never ever given a boring match. Hope to see lot more of Cena at wrestlemania.

I just dont see how Cena is ranked higher than Edge. Granted Cena may have been in all title matches but Edge in my opinion puts on his best perfomance at mania. Personally i would switch Cena and Angle in the rankings

Does it disturb anyone else that this will be Cena's fifth consecutive major title match at WrestleMania? Time for some new faces, WWE!

I hope to God that the Ultimate Warrior IS in the top 10.

Average Joe - Squatting 500 pounds attached to a barbell is a little different than lifting a a seven foot tall human on your shoulders... you're not comparing apples to apples there.

I laughed pretty hard when I read this, thankfully I wasn't anything as I might have spit it out and ruined my computer. Cena may be the biggest draw today, but he isn't near the draw that guys like Hogan, Austin, or the Rock were, especially when you look at where current WWE TV ratings or PPV buyrates stand. Other than his FU on the Big Show, nothing else he's done at Mania truly stands out. He doesn't have a classic match, or anything that truly ties him with Wrestlemania as being special.

This is a good pick here for Cena i had somewhere from the mid to late teens but i think with him always being in the main event for almost half a decade it makes him atleast to me the hardest person that will be on this list to judge because he could be in the top 10 but originally i started him off at 19 then moved him all the way up to 15 when i looked at my list but I do believe he should not be ahead of Edge because I thnk edge has had better matches but by far he is the hardest person to rank beacause of his accomplishments

So help me if the Lawrence Taylor gets left off this list!
Posted by: JTK | March 25, 2009 2:29 PM
Why was it such a surprise that Cena beat Triple H? Not even Triple H's political clout in the locker room could have stopped Cena from being booked as the winner in this one. That would have been like Steve Austin losing to Shawn Michaels at XIV. WWE wouldn't have been dumb enough to kill the momentum of its biggest merchandise seller by having him lose at Wrestlemania to a mega heel like Triple H.

So that leaves:
1) Stone Cold
2) Rock
3) Hogan
4) Undertaker
5) Shawn Michaels
6) Andre the Giant
7) HHH
8) Ultimate Warrior
9) Eddie Guerrero?
10) Jake Roberts
11) Mysterio?
12) Randy Savage?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Jake was No. 25

To Average Joe...there is a huge difference between doing squats with a set of weights and lifting 500 lbs of human being. The wieght is distributed entirely unevenly, and requires a greater level of effort.

WIth 4 victories out of 5 at WM, being all of them title matches, I thought you would have ranked Cena a bit higher.
Changing a little bit the topic, I've just read on wwe.com that FORMER wwe superstar kizarny was going to join a circus or something like that. when did kizarny get out of wwe?
Posted by: Ray | March 25, 2009 3:36 PM
I got HHH at # 12.When compiling my list and looking back at just how many WM's he's been in, it was hard not rank him higher but he never really had that WrestleMania moment. No matter how good(great) some of his matches were,(Jericho,Batista,Cena) there always seemed to be another match on the card that was better.Except of course for the triple threat at WM 20.I'm afarid the same thing will happen this year.Him and Orton are gonna tear it up but, they will be over-shadowed by HBK and the UT.

I've been trying to think of the next eleven and it's hard. Easily it's Hogan, HHH, Savage, Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Austin, The Rock and I hope Andre. That's only nine. Who am I missing? Maybe the Warrior - WM4 beat Hercules, WM5 lost IC to Rude, WM6 won world title vs. Hogan (I was there), WM7 won career-ending match to Savage, WM12 squashed HHH. That's ten. Perhaps Piper? WM1 - main event, WM2 - Mr.T boxing, WM3 beat Adonis and cut his hair, WM6 vs. Bad News Brown, WM8 - lost IC to Hart, WM12 vs. Goldust. He was also in the corner of Virgil and referred in WM 10 and ran in during WM18 and will be in this year's WM.

Well, seeing how Cena should certainly be ranked higher than Randy Orton, when it comes to WrestleMania performances, I take it Orton does not feature in your top 25 at all?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Orton is No. 16

@ Average Joe:
Give Cena some credit. He may not be Scott Mendelson or Ronnie Coleman, but Cena has some power. There was an old documentary on TLC about wrestling and Cena was featured. His musculature back then was borderline retarded. There was a segment where they showed him doing approximately 1100 pounds for reps on leg press. Nobody is going to confuse Cena’s strength with Mark Henry’s, but what he did ain’t easy. Besides, if you drop a barbell wrong, you don’t have to worry about the barbell getting paralyzed.
And while on the topic of powerlifting, check out this video of Mendelson benching 1015 and note The Undertaker's music playing in the background. It's okay; even the so called "real" strength freaks watch rasslin, too.

Even though I'm not the biggest Cena fan in the world (though I like him more in recent months) I think he belongs ahead of Ultimate Warrior (assuming he makes the list)
Warrior had a goog match with Rick Rude at WM 5, but Rude carried it completely, Actually had a decent match at WM 6 with Hogan, and his match with Savage at 7 was completely carried by Savage. His appearance at WM 12 with HHH doesn't even warrant a mention. And his reappearnce at 8 was a "WM moment" as he was running in, but true to form he did virtually nothing in the ring.
Again, I'm assuming he'll make your list, but John Cena definetly has had a bigger impact than the so called Ultimate Warrior.

What???? No Bret Hart in the list. Are you kidding or what????
Posted by: Anonymous | March 26, 2009 2:47 AM
As all the comments have come in about top 25 lists I am shocked that no one has mentioned Owen Hart.
WM5 - Great match as the blue blazer vs Mr. Perfect
WM10 - One of the all time greatest WM matches against Bret Hart
WM11 - Won tag team titles
WM12 - Won a 6man tag match
WM13 - Won tag team titles
WM14 - Lost Euro champ to Triple H
WM15 - Retained tag team titles
I personally had Owen in my top 10... Which, I admit may be a stretch due to him being one of my all time favorites... But to not have him on the list at all shocks me.

Sorry to those above but Piper is definitely before Guerrero, Hardy or Mysterio. Not even close.

Giving the Big Show the FU is different than squatting 500lbs b/c the wieght is distributed unevenly, but I agree with "Average Joe". We all know in wrestling wrestlers "help" other wrestlers to perform move. When they body slam, suplex, FU someone, the wrestler who the move is performed on is assisting to make the move easier. In the case of the FU, Big Show layed across Cena's shoulders so he could pick him up; he wasn't picking up "dead weight". Also, squatting 500lbs is MUCH tougher b/c you have to take that 500lbs down into a squatting position, not just hold it on your shoulders for a second and dump it over. The only thing harder about the FU is balancing.

Being that John Cena is the WWE posterboy for post-2005, I think this is the best place to make the observation that it's interesting how you dictate the influence on the business. When I read it, I took it as an automatic lead for older guys whose influence is felt today (John Cena, Randy Orton, and Batista haven't been around long enough to inspire new wrestlers) so I am pleasantly surprised that the newer guys are not getting completely shafted, even though it's harder for any single one of them to have a bigger influence after Vince learned (by way of Hulk Hogan) to not put all his eggs in one basket.
Posted by: Mr. Sarcasm | March 26, 2009 12:53 PM
I'm confused... so many of you put up your remaining top 12, but Cena was #12 so there are only 11 spots left.
Posted by: mstrchef13 | March 26, 2009 2:11 PM
Not to spoil any of Kevin's future plans for this list, but how come no one has mentioned Vince McMahons rightful place at least among the Top 5. He's had three major angle matches (Hogan, Michaels, Shane) and has been involved in countless others including factoring into the decision in multiple Main Events and the Hair vs. Hair match at WM 23. In fact, I think i'd place him as high as 2 or 3
RESPONSE FROM KE: No doubt Vince would be on the list, but I wanted to keep it to just wrestlers. So no Vince, Shane, Mr. T, etc.

The top 11 has to be, in some order:
hogan
savage
hart
michaels
austin
rock
undertaker
HHH
andre
warrior
piper
My prediction: Warrior at 11, Piper at 10.

I won't criticize them because we are counting down to the "25th anniversary of Wrestlemania."
