Notes on Ric Flair, ECW, and vintage Hulk Hogan angle
It’s official: Ric Flair is the biggest thing to come out of North Carolina. NASCAR and college basketball aren’t even close.
At least that’s the opinion of hockey fans at Tuesday night’s Washington Capitals-Carolina Hurricanes game in D.C.
During my weekly wrestling segment yesterday afternoon on WNST 1570 AM, sports talk show host Nestor Aparicio, who attended that hockey game, related the following story about Flair.
Since Carolina was in town, this poll question was posed on the video screen: What is North Carolina most known for? The choices were NASCAR, college basketball or Ric Flair. Voting was done by text messaging.
Aparicio said that as soon as Flair appeared on the screen, 10,000 people in the arena yelled, “Wooo!” Flair won the contest with 82 percent of the vote.
Take that Dale Earnhardt Jr., Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski.

Thoughts on Tuesday’s episode of ECW: The six-man tag match that saw Jack Swagger, John Morrison and The Miz defeat Christian, Finlay and Tommy Dreamer was a solid TV main event. I really like the rivalry that is developing between Swagger and Christian. I’ll say it again: I hope these two get a spot on the WrestleMania 25 card. With Swagger obviously on the fast track, I can’t imagine that he wouldn’t be there, and Christian would be his logical opponent. …
As much as I liked that six-man, I have to admit that the highlight of the show for me was the Alicia Fox-Natalya match. Fox, who supposedly was terrible in the ring when she was in the Florida developmental territory, has now had two matches on WWE television and I think they both have been decent, especially this one against Natalya. …
I was a little surprised on Tuesday night that Kane beat the Boogeyman so quickly and decisively. I’m not a fan of the character, so I was actually happy to see Boogey get squashed, but I didn’t expect it since WWE seemed to value him as a novelty act. Well, apparently not, as WWE announced yesterday that Boogeyman was released. …
There’s no question that Morrison and Miz are getting the job done in the ring, but the next Dirt Sheet segment that is actually funny will be the first.

Hulk Hogan is featured on WWE 24/7 this month, and I caught a classic clip from 1981 of Hogan interrupting an interview between Vince McMahon and Tony Atlas. Hogan was starting to make a name for himself as a heel at that time, while Atlas was one of the top babyfaces in the business. Atlas and Hogan probably had the two best physiques in wrestling, so it was a natural rivalry.
A few things that struck me about the Hogan-Atlas confrontation:
– Hogan cut a race-baiting promo on Atlas, which, unfortunately, was common in that era. He did the standard “shine my shoes” remark and kept referring to Atlas as “boy.” What I found interesting after watching the clip again on YouTube is that Hogan calling Atlas a “brown clown” was edited out of the WWE 24/7 version. Was that really any more offensive than the other slurs?
– Atlas cut the kind of humble babyface promo that was the norm back in those days, but it would get him booed out of the building in 2009.
– McMahon seemed to have a real man-crush on Atlas. “Look at that chest!” McMahon said breathlessly after he coaxed Atlas into posing. In retrospect, McMahon’s infatuation with Atlas’ physique was a foreshadowing of his penchant for wrestlers with sculpted bodies.

Comments
I never liked Jack Swagger in the beginning but he has grown on me as a performer and a wrestler. He really shined in the championship match with Christian last week that was Swaggers best performace so far.He really has brought more creditablity for the ECW Championship and my respect for him as a wrestler. If he keeps it up and cuts some alright promos his future is looking very bright in the WWE

I remember as a kid watching Atlas in the ring . He couldn't wrestle worth a lick and lurched around the ring . But in that era he certainly was an anomaly . He also had a feud in his pre - WWWF days with "olympic strongman" Ken Patera .

On a sidenote, what in the blue hell is Mark Henry doing in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match? Let's look at the first three dudes in this year's match.
CM Punk- Ok, he won last year, he's been in the last two, he obviously excels in that match.
Kane- Wouldn't have been my choice, but he's been in one before, so it can't hurt.
Mark Henry- Huh? Can the guy even climb the stairs?
If Evan Bourne isn't in this match, I'm going to cry.
In regards to Vinnie's "man crush", I'm not saying this to be sophmoric, but sometimes when you watch wrestling, you tend to think to yourself "Man, this looks really gay. And I mean homosexual gay, not stupid gay." Think about it. A bunch of beefy guys breathing heavy and sweating as they get into suggestive positions with each other? And what about some of the promos? I saw one on YouTube with Test and John Cena from 2002. Test got right in Cena's face and then looked like he was starting to check him out. Wrestling's great, but sometimes one has to look away for a sec.

Eck, you are 100% right about Ric Flair and North Carolina. I live in NC and Ric Flair is known and liked by nearly everyone, whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Tar Heel, or Blue Devil.
I'm not sure if they still do this, but in the recent past, the Carolina Hurricanes play a video featuring Flair after each goal. In one, he appears in a Hurricanes jersey and says, "That's another Carolina Hurricanes goal! WOOOOOOOOO!!!"
I've told people this for years, that his popularity in this state is so high, that he could run for governor and probably win. Now, I know that Richard Petty ran for NC Secretary of State a while ago and lost, but Flair is more popular now than Petty was then. Flair has mentioned running a few times - kinda like how Charles Barkley has mentioned a few times about running for governor of Alabama - but he's never done more than that.
One interesting thing: Flair is a big fan and supporter of the South Carolina Gamecocks - rather than one of the NC collegiate teams.

They cut the Boogeyman? Say it ain't so, Eck!
Also, good zinger on the Dirt Sheet... to M&M's credit, I do think at least one or two have been funny.

Eck,
Ric Flair is a staple when it comes to Carolina Hurricanes hockey. Fans hope and pray they will see lots of Naitch when they attend home games because he appears on the scoreboard to announce "That's another Carolina Hurricanes Goal! Whoooooo! Whooo Whooo!!!!!" They have been using Flair on the big board for a decade now...and its just as popular now as it was when they arrived in NC.

Hey Kevin, you must be out of it man. The Dirt Sheet segments are hilarious. I laugh every single time.

"Hogan cut a race-baiting promo on Atlas, which, unfortunately, was common in that era."
Don't be so sensitive, Kev. I'm not a racist.but you know that was part of the game....plus not too long ago Cody Rhodes said the same thing to JTG in tag match on RAW before slapping him in the head.
If Atlas then, and presumably JTG now, had no problem with it then you shouldn't either. Remember what you and other writers proclaim, "It's just wrestling."

For all the hype surrounding Tyson Kidd the guy is doing a horrible job of selling his partnership with Natalya. I don't expect him to jam his tongue down her throat but at least he can look like he enjoys working with her
RESPONSE FROM KE: He shouldn't have to act either. They are a couple in real life.
Posted by: jt | March 5, 2009 11:30 AM
Kevin,
What are your feelings on guys like Kane and Mark Henry being in the Money in the Bank match?
I'd much rather see guys like Rey, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston etc who can fly a little bit.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I totally agree. I'd like to see Benjamin and R-Truth in there as well.
Posted by: Elevation | March 5, 2009 11:43 AM
Boogeyman gone from WWE, do you think, since he is a prodigy of Booker T's school, he will end up in TNA?
RESPONSE FROM KE: It's possible. Of course he will need a new gimmick because WWE owns the Boogeyman name and likeness.Maybe they could put him under a scary mask and call him Redrum (that murder spelled backwards).
Posted by: Dave | March 5, 2009 12:06 PM
I think trying to be funny is the biggest thing holding back Team MizMo. Well, that and the fact that they're a tag team working for Vince. I think they'll stay together for a while as it seems Miz draws all their heat, but Morrisson somewhat carries them in the ring, though Miz has improved a lot.
I also think WWE is just using Christian to get Swagger over. It's a great rivalry but I am a bit wary of Swagger getting two relatively clean pins in a row.

I've never seen a Bogeyman match go for more than a couple of minutes. Never understood why. His age maybe? But he seems to be in good shape. Maybe just very limited wrestling skills, hence the 95% gimmick aspect of his character. Plus, you can only watch a guy eat worms so many times. It gets old. He needs to try a different source of protein maybe.
Maybe he will arise from the "bottomless pit" again someday!

my opinion on mitb this year is beginning to change now that they are putting more decent people in (if you want to know who they are, read the smackdown spoilers for the next 2 weeks). i wonder how much longer boogeyman will stay in the business because he's coming up on 45 but probably he'll be brought back in the future for any special raw shows where they bring back old gimmicks. are they going to put dh smith in legacy or not? also, whatever happened with the scott armstrong and legacy? i thought he was going to be their personal ref after the orton-kane match a few weeks ago, but they haven't done anything since then
Posted by: paul19 | March 5, 2009 2:45 PM
Did they release Manu too?
I was looking at the Roster of superstars on WWE.com and he wasnt on any brands roster
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, he was released.

Wow, I did not know boogyman was realed til now. Its weird since i just saw him in his match live in Boston :]. Was it me or did he almost catch on fire aha because then his flames rose, he was right next to them and he dashed forward so fast, which i found funny. I hope Morrison&Miz get into MITB match.
Posted by: Anna | March 5, 2009 3:16 PM
Come on Kev. Even though im not a fan of the dirt sheet, you gotta admit, that evan bourne impression that morrison did deserves a chuckle. maybe even a laugh.

Also, speaking of racial overtones... this is still the funniest clip for that. Booker's promo against Hogan. The look on Booker's face after he makes the mistake is just priceless.

Years later. Vince McMahon flips it on Booker T. Funny stuff as well.

Cliff mentions the possibility of gays in wrestling. I recall some sort of scandal back when involving Barry O ( Orton ) saying Pat Patterson got out of line with certain activities when travelling on the road. Does anyone else remember this?
Posted by: Mr. Eli | March 5, 2009 3:57 PM
"If Atlas then, and presumably JTG now, had no problem with it then you shouldn't either."
JTG should certainly not have a problem with it since he - as a babyface, no less - called Morrison a "silly white boy." Race-baiting goes the other way, too.

Not that I see his character helping boost TNA ratings, but I've read that Boogeyman is taking bookings in character and already has a signing scheduled at the end of March.
On another note, I saw ECW did a 1.4. I think that'd have to bode well for Christian since it was hovering around the 1.1 before he got there.
Lastly, I'm kind of intrigued with the MITB participants so far. It may not be as high flying as years past, but I think there's the potential to see some "holy s---" moments if the big guys are out there to bump for the younger talent. I just wouldn't want to see Mark Henry tossing guys like lawn darts and getting the briefcase.
Posted by: James C | March 5, 2009 6:37 PM
I do want to see Mark Henry climb that ladder and fall off and literally squash someone below. That will be something a little different.
I've always thought certain wrestling moves to be a little out there, like the Pedigree? Not that there's anything wrong with that.......
Its obvious Christian is in ECW for teh same reason as most of the other vets...to help put the young talent over. You don't think Vince put him there to have him overshadow the young guys working hard there, particularly after coming back from enemy TNA?

Everybody complaining bout the Money In The Bank ladder match including Mark Henry are the same people pining for the X-Division to get it's prestige back. In reality the Money In The Bank needs to include 6-8 wrestlers who actually have a shot of winning a World Title in the next year in order to maintain prestige. The original Money In The Bank was the best because all 6 guys had a legit shot at being champion within the year, and every year since then the match has just become a place for athletic spot-fests and the title shot as an afterthought.
Kev, what do you think about what I've said about the match and also how would you feel about the possibility of John Cena being in MITB? He currently has nothing to do and that could be the perfect segue into putting him in the Edge/Big Show match later on, and elevate the Money In The Bank Match to otherworldy proportions.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't see Cena being in MIB. As to your other point, I think the participants should be athletic guys who also have at least an outside shot at becoming champ. Who really thought Punk was going to win last year? Would I rather see Mysterio, Kingston and R-Truth in there over Kane and Henry? Yes.
Posted by: Ceasar | March 5, 2009 7:32 PM
Finally Gab and Alicia on tv, bout time. For some reason they make me smile. Not sure why, yet??? But who cares.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I know why Alicia makes me smile.

For the record, I wasn't saying that Test is gay, just what he was doing during that segment with Cena in 2002 looked gay. I don't think gay men in wrestling is a secret. Any serious fan knows that Pat Patterson and Chris Kanyon are openly homosexual.
Posted by: Cliff | March 6, 2009 12:31 PM
Cena winning Money in the Bank? What a Hogan-rific idea!

Mr E . - isn't Shawn Michaels g _ _ ?

Natalya applied a better sharpshooter than Edge had done on Raw. It must be in the genes.
Posted by: Christopher | March 7, 2009 2:08 AM
The Artist: Whoa! Can't be. Not my man HBK...... Either way let's move on cause you know Kevin's gonna play us close on this one.
Posted by: Mr. Eli | March 7, 2009 7:05 AM
Howabout this match Kevin?
Jack Swagger vs. Christian vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Finlay for the ECW Title
I think it's a keeper personally what do you think?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Not a Dreamer fan. Would rather see Christian-Swagger one on one.
Posted by: Hardway | March 7, 2009 10:49 AM
Mr. Eli -
Just trying to get Kevin's goat there :) I'll amend that comment about Shawn to "bi" .
Posted by: the artist formerly known as jack in hebron | March 7, 2009 12:11 PM
I agree with Kevin. Christian is the most deserving challenger as he looked phenomenal one-on-one with Swagger and in the six-man tag.
That being said, I hope that Dreamer gets a nice send off.

just watched this week's episode. I agree Kev, that Alicia Fox match was one of the best women's matches I've seen in WWE in a while.
I think I may be the only fan in the world who's fine with Mark Henry being in the MITB match. I think he'll probably get some good offense in using the ladder and I have a strange feeling that he'll take one of the biggest bumps of the match. I could see Henry on a ladder being pushed down to the arena floor, maybe even through a table. Kane is filler as he has been for years. You expect him to be in the match and once it starts, you expect him to do nothing memorable and you expect him to lose. But Henry's more of a surprise. I would not have thought he'd be in this match and I kind of think he'll be in there for something exciting.
Posted by: Rob | March 7, 2009 10:06 PM
Reading the comments of Cliff and Rob got me thinking about a wwe.com poll. The question is "Does Mark Henry have a chance at Money in the Bank?" The second of two responses is "No way. He will probably not even be able to climb the ladder."
I am surprised that they would draw attention to the worst case scenario.
Posted by: Christopher | March 8, 2009 12:03 AM
The Artist: "bi" sounds more than reasonable. Hopefully this resolution won't get anybody's goat.
Posted by: Mr. Eli | March 8, 2009 7:25 AM
Did Atlas respond, "My momma didn't raise no boy!" in that Hogan/Atlas clip? Worst retort ever! It makes him sound like he was born female.
Also, The Boogeyman cannot be REDRUM in TNA because that was Rellik's pre-TNA gimmick name.
