Mick Foley-Sting feud heats up on TNA Impact

Mick Foley delivered his best performance on the microphone since joining TNA last night on Impact. A compelling show-long angle involving Foley, Sting, Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett culminated in the official announcement of a Foley-Sting main event at the Lockdown pay-per-view on April 19

All four guys played their roles well, but it was Foley who was the key to selling the angle. His explanation for smashing Sting over the head with a chair – on purpose this time – wasn’t too far-fetched. The idea was that Foley didn’t appreciate Sting saying that he is on the inactive list, and he also felt that Sting was taking pity on him during the tag match last night that saw Foley and Jarrett take on Sting and Angle. Foley also pointed out how he can’t help but want to be involved in the action when he is so close to the action.

It looks as this point as if Foley and Sting will both remain babyfaces (Sting never really did turn heel) heading into their match, which is probably a good decision. It would be an uphill battle trying to get fans to boo either one of them, and a heel turn isn’t really necessary for this to work. It would be entertaining, though, to see Foley join the Main Event Mafia just to see him in a custom-made suit and one of those snazzy Main Event Mafia track suits.

Other thoughts on last night’s show:

There was a lot of talking in the opening segment with Foley, Sting, Angle, Jarrett and Kevin Nash (I think it went on for close to 15 minutes), but it was mostly good stuff. Angle’s mention of the Montreal Screwjob made me groan, though. It’s such a cliche at this point, not to mention the fact that it’s yet another WWE reference. ...

If Sting was as good at cutting promos in 1990 as he is now, his stints as world champion would have lasted a lot longer. ...

Surprisingly, feuding announcers Mike Tenay and Don West got along for the most part. I usually hate angles being abruptly dropped like they never happened, but I’m fine with this one going away. The problem is that I’m not certain if it’s really over or not. After playing it straight for about the first 90 minutes and never acknowledging their problems over the past couple weeks, Tenay and West started getting snippy with each other. ...

I’ve seen a lot of criticism on the Internet of Samoa Joe’s new look and character, but I think it’s a big improvement. I hate that he’s putting that huge “tribal knife” to people’s throats, however. ...

Judging by A.J. Styles’ promo, it looks as if The Frontline is done. The MEM-Frontline feud was doomed from the start by bad booking. ...

I don’t like Taylor Wilde pinning Awesome Kong (even if it was just a tag match), but I realize that TNA is short on female babyfaces and someone has to challenge Kong. ...

I do like that The Beautiful People are making Madison Rayne go through an initiation instead of allowing her to just walk in and join the group. This could for some entertaining segments. ...

Did I miss something? Does anybody know why Angelina Love and Velvet Sky are mad at Cute Kip? Is it because it’s in the TNA rule book that every faction has to have infighting? ...

Is TNA really going to make Daffney (The Governor) wrestle in a pants suit? ...

Jeremy Borash’s tease for his TNA Mobile alert was about a “notorious celebrity” looking to get involved with TNA. The company already announced on its Web site and issued a press release last week about Danny Bonaduce working with TNA. ...

The Motor City Machine Guns and No Limit had a good match, but I have trouble getting past the name of Tetsuya Naito and Yujiro’s team. It reminds me of the No Limit Soldiers, and that reminds me of one of WCW’s dumbest angles (imagine the ground that covers). And a hoody-hoo to you, too.

Sting should have seen it coming - literally. In the time it took Foley to turn right around and swing the chair, Haystacks Calhoun could have stepped out of the way.

Chris Brown is a "notorious" celebrity. Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly...these celebrities are "notorious."

Danny Bonaduce is a "D-list celebrity."

(And if the difference isn't self-evident, then how about quantification via Google: Chris Brown gets 78 million hits. Britney gets 80 million, Jacko gets 68 million, and R. Kelly gets 33 million. Danny Bonaduce? 476,000.)

I forgot about this: Foley wore a suit in WWE while he was a member of the Corporation. He looked awful.

From what I understand this was another highly rated show . That's good ... I guess . Kevin I'm not sure what your criteria is for Samoa Joe is when you say his new look is an improvement . Forgive me for being so blunt , but I don't care what he does with his hair , attire , or fake ink , he's still a disgusting slob .
Short of breaking the law , I would go through any initation Angelina Love and Velvet Sky wanted me to.
How 'bout you Kev ?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Velvet Sky for sure.

I think this was probably the best TNA show in a while am glad samoa Joe is almost going back to how the original character was except he's alot more edgier but he needs to lose the knife. I think it would be great at the lockdown PPV if Beer Money gets the torch passed to them which i doubt but who knows i do hope that the MEM finally turns on Sting and Foley goes with them. I don't understand how I guy like Suicide wins the X Title in his very first match I think all the steam has gone from the video game and noone cares even though it is a cool character with the current wrestler under the mask. i think it is hilarious though how now AJ Styles is now a legend for winning the Title but they make fun of the title shouldn't he be a legend for constantly beating angle and also the make fun of the belt but know refer to him as a Grand slam champ weird i think the beautiful people segment is great and can't wait to see more from them but what i didn't understand is Taylor Wilde beat Kong so why did she beat up ODB and kick Wilde out of the ring then back down from her boyfriend a few months ago she was wrestling in a tag match with men wrestlers. and when can the best tag team and TNA get a win on this soil I mean MCMG's im surprised they put the X Title on Shelley and was glad to see that they didn't try to break them up which looked like it was gonna eventually happen with your tag partner challenging for your title almost every week

Rap is Crap Kevin, rap is crap.

Speaking of which, are at least half that faction dead now?!

The new Samoa Joe is ridiculous. Threatning people with a blade, and then having it covered with blood at Sunday's PPV, is over-the-top and borderline offensive. He's too talented to need that silly gimmick.

Sting and Foley's match will be terrible. Sting looked very old and a step slow in there with Angle at Destination X. He won't be any better against Mick.

There's very, very little to like about this company right now. I love AJ Styles and Beer Money is the best tag team in wrestling right now.

I think they should turn Awesome Kong face soon and kind of freshen her character up a little.

Samoa Joe's new gimmick is one of the most reprehensible things I've ever seen in pro wrestling. All his new look does is make him look fatter and a cheap Umaga knock off

I may never actually forgive you for reminding of the No Limit Soldiers. I was actually at a Nitro taping in New Orleans many many years ago where they were unfortunately the focus of the evening. I paid good money to watch wrestling (or sports entertainment) and ended up at a crappy rap concert. I haven't been to a live show since.

This show was a mixed back some very entertaining stuff some absurd stuff. Gotta say I am happy to see Foley find his stride and get his groove back. He really is a guy that I had little interest in seeing and wished he'd go away just weeks ago, but the last two weeks his performances have changed my mind. He has cut great intense promos with plenty of fire. He not long ago looks like a lost promo well he was great in the opening segment and in the closing segment. He has found his old Cactus Jack. He looks like he's lost 25 pouynds and is in the best shape in a long time. After he drilled Sting with the chair you might have not gotten it but his promo at the end was fantastic and made sense. The No Limit Vs MCMG tag match was as good as a 5 minute match can be they should have gotten more time. Are they ever showing Global Impact? I liked A.J promo as well as he showed passion and was over as anyone on the show. After his promo made me hopeful that they will push the young guys in their feud with M.E.M but it's Russo so nah. Could Joe's new look be any worse? He didn't need a new look he just needs to be booked like he was his first year plus in TNA. The whole thing with Bashir was absurd. I am glasd they are having Lethal Lockdown this year as it's one of my fav matches. Imo they should have announced the Gauntlet an hour of so that way they could build to next weekl better. Still while the in ring action wasn;'t much I was entertained(well mostly) for two hours.

Saw some of impact, and found no shortage of things to hate on. So here goes…

Samoa Joe looks shorter with his new gimmick, and that crap with Daivari was stupid. “JOE, JOE… boo-hoo!” God, that was lame.

Wasn’t Don West supposed to be heel or something?

It looked like one of The Beautiful People had a Beautiful Cold Sore on her lip…

Jeremy Borash is so creepy.

Kurt Angle looks like he’s lost even more weight…

Why is Mick Foley taking Angle Slams on the floor? He has nothing to prove, and killing his body for TNA just undermines all of his past accomplishments in WWE. He should have stayed retired.

Yeah, so it was another episode of impact; no more no less. I guess I’ll tune in again next week. We all know TNA is everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure! Same impact time, same impact channel…

Judging by A.J. Styles’ promo, it looks as if The Frontline is done. The MEM-Frontline feud was doomed from the start by bad booking. ...

uhh clearly you weren't fully paying full attention to his promo(which was very good) He removed Team 3-D and Rhino out of the group and stated that the orignals would beat the M.e.m. I'm sure he'll be in the Lethal Lockdown match along with Jarrett and Joe and probably Lethal and Creed Vs Angle, Steiner, Booker, Nash and maybe a guy like Morgan.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I heard exactly what he said, and he never mentioned The Frontline by name. So like I said, the Frontline is done.

Seems to me that TNA is a sinking ship. The younger stars who need the push continue to be pushed to the 2nd tier (and lower).

As much as I liked both of them in their prime, I have no interest in a Sting/Foley program. I have given TNA a chance and they had me for awhile, but, recently, have done little to hold my interest.

Sting vs Foley should be about as athletic as watching a Seniors golf tournament. Maybe Mick will whip out a 3 wood and smack Sting into the rough.

I ca
nt figure why everybody is so shocked/surprised that Foley whacked Sting with a chair. It seems like nobody remembers that in this match, they were opponents! Foley is no stranger to using foreign objects. If they were teammates It would be more like a turn.Do we expect Mick to put a hurricanrana or a enzugiri on Sting?

And as noted before,Booker T's rant this week was again unintelligible.(Sounded like he was asking Styles "Do You Phoebe??")Even AJ says "I didnt understand a word you said".Maybe this is TNA's take on talking-in-dialect like Ivan Koloff did in the 60s and 70s,but its ineffective if you cant understand what is being said.

I am actually surprised that still so many people actually watch TNA. Its really shocking.

The Gov. pants suit and barefooted. WOOOOOO

After one of the worst PPVs in recent memory, TNA put on a much needed focused show. Despite being a poorly kept secret, the build to Foley/Sting has been (gasp) completely logical. The match probably won't be a classic, but their mic work should make it a great feud, if TNA stays out of its own way. That being said, it was a complete mistake to put on a main event that big (in TNA terms) with no buildup. It was Foley's first Impact match ever and Jarrett's first in over two years, it should have been built up to over a series of weeks. The Guns and No Limit put on an entertaining 4 minute spotfest, which could have been an actual great match if given 15 minutes to develop a story. AJ/Booker also has potential, and AJ got in a great ringer about "a deserving challenger". The only negatives were again TNA's apparent drive to kill Samoa Joe's character, I didn't think it was possible, but he's been even worse since his reboot, when all he needed was to return to the badass character that made him a star. The stuff with Bashir was racist and disturbing.

And Eck, stay bout it bout it and rowdy rowdy.

Why do you have such a problem with references to other companies, Kevin?

I know it's been WWE's style to totally ignore other companies, to the point of stupidity, but i see no reason why TNA should follow suit.

I guess you think it's makes them look like the little brother, but to me it suggests they're above the pretty rubbish that WWE has gone on with for decades.

Absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging a workers history in another company despite WWE conditioning wrestling fans to believe there is.

I have a question. The beginning segment involving MEM, Foley, and Jarrett showed a guy with MEM with his hood up and even having a mask and covering his face. He almost looked like Suicide but I remembered Scott Steiner could have been beaten beyond recognition via Samoa Joe...I found that interesting.

Where's the Destination X review? You are such a WWE mark.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Yeah, I'm such a WWE mark that I'm heading up to the Lockdown PPV in Philly on April 19.

Kevin after April 19th you'll be converted and people will say you're a TNA mark ! :)

The WWE have the same stiffs on top yet nobody blasts them. Yet Tna gets ripped for doing the same thing.(rightfully thought)

"Does anybody know why Angelina Love and Velvet Sky are mad at Cute Kip? Is it because it’s in the TNA rule book that every faction has to have infighting? ..."

I think there is no real reason for them to be mad, but as TNA apparently (IMHO luckily) removed Cute Kip from their rooster, they needed some excuse...
