Triple H reveals wrestling’s worst-kept secret on Smackdown
After a few years of winking at the audience, WWE finally acknowledged on one of its episodic shows what every wrestling fan already knew – that Triple H and Stephanie McMahon are married.
Triple H spilled the beans during a sit-down interview with Jim Ross last night on Smackdown. It was a necessary plot device to put a fresh spin on yet another Triple H-Randy Orton feud.
Thankfully, Ross and Tazz did not feign surprise at the revelation, because that would have undermined their credibility. This is just one of those instances in which wrestling fans are not supposed to think too much, because if we did, some past story lines involving Triple H wouldn’t make a lot of sense.
As far as the interview itself, I think Triple H’s acting skills left a lot to be desired. His intensity came off forced, just as it did at the end of Raw last Monday after Orton hit Stephanie with an RKO. It’s not that Triple H’s dramatic performance was awful, it just wasn’t in the same league as some of the stuff we have seen recently in WWE from Orton, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, JBL and others.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
Despite the non-finish, Jeff Hardy and Edge had a very good TV main event. You knew either Matt Hardy or John Cena – or both – would interfere. It turned out to just be Matt, who challenged his brother to a match on next week’s show after he laid him out. There’s no way these two are going to wrestle each other before WrestleMania. …
I’m glad that Smackdown general manager Vickie Guerrero made it clear that it’s not up to Michaels and JBL to decide who gets a shot at The Undertaker and his 16-0 record at WrestleMania. Her choice to face “The Dead Man” is Vladimir Kozlov, who is still undefeated in singles competition (house shows don’t count). I had thought for a while that it was going to be Undertaker-Kozlov at WrestleMania, but that was before Kozlov’s poor showing in the Smackdown elimination chamber match last Sunday. There’s no way WWE is going to trust Kozlov to work in such a high profile match after seeing that. …
John Morrison and The Miz’s Valentine’s Day date with The Bella Twins was good for a few laughs. Morrison, sitting at the table with his jacket open and his bare chest exposed, was a lot funnier here than in any of the Dirt Sheet segments that have been on TV. Carlito and Primo, who ended up accidentally hitting the Bellas in their faces with pies, have been made to look like such goobers that it almost seems as if they are turning heel. …
It was great to see Maryse back in the ring. It was even better to see Gail Kim back on TV, even though it was just a brief vignette. …
Hopefully, this isn’t a bad sign for Kim. The last two wrestlers to be introduced on Smackdown via vignettes were Kizarny and Hade Vansen. Kizarny, who made a cameo last night, became an afterthought after his first match, and Vansen (who portrayed an unnamed dark character) was released after just one vignette. …
Ross had the line of the night during Umaga’s squash win over the recently released Scotty Goldman, who had been the host of a Web series on wwe.com: “Mr. dot.com may get the delete button pushed on him tonight.”

Comments
While watching the six-man Hell In A Cell match on DVD from Armageddon 2000, I noticed the announce team mention that Triple H's wife Stephanie probably wouldn't enjoy seeing from the back his facial features being rearranged against the chain link steel by Stone Cold.
Also, has Gail Kim had some work done? In her video promo she looked "bigger up top" than I recall.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: THis is where things can get a little confusing. Triple H and Stephanie were married and then divorced in the story line before they ever got married in real life. It is their real-life marriage that was never acknowledged.

It's nice to see Matt Hardy being used this way but hasn't anyone thought Jeff Hardy should be explosively angry? After all, one of the big themes of WWE for the last few months had been his quest to finally 'win the big one'. His tepid reaction reflects poorly on the storyline and, more broadly, on the World titles in WWE.
Triple H, Randy Orton, Jericho, JBL and Edge have all built large portions of their personas on their insatiable desire to be World champ. Jeff Hardy gets a taste then once it's stolen from him, responds just barely. Even CM Punk (who had no 'quest' for the belt) had a great match with Jericho after the loss of his title.
Finally, it's sad but fitting that Gail Kim shows up just a week after Christian does. One of the fundamental differences between TNA and WWE rears its head here in terms of the contracts and perceived opportunities WWE offers. Both Kim and Christian could have remained big fish but thought it better to swim with WWE's sharks. Pretty telling stuff.
Keep up the good work, Kevin.

Qoute : ..." one of those instances in which wrestling fans are not supposed to think too much " . Excluding your readers Kevin , I don't think many wrestling fans have the capacity to think TOO much !

He married her in a drive-in at LasVegas
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: That was a story line.

Personally I can't wait for Gail Kim to come back to WWE. I did enjoy watching her wrestle last time she was in WWE and one more thing why would people want to see Kozlov vs Undertaker at Wrestlemania 25 would be a really crap match. But Shawn Micheals vs undertaker I would pay to see that and we know Shawn Michaels will win on monday night. Who would also wnat JBL, he has been booked that strongly as of later and he's lost at alot of ppvs in the last few months. We will riot if it's Koslov vs Undertaker at Wrestlemania lol :)

"There’s no way these two are going to wrestle each other before WrestleMania." …
Could it be that WWE is having second thoughts about the Hardy Boyz feud and wants to blow it off? Maybe they want to reveal the stalker as someone whom the internet community hasn't considered. I could be imagining things, but it seems that WWE has not put forth its best effort with this fued, for the second consecutive week.

I mean to sound mean but they already revealed that on TV years ago.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I don't want to sound mean either, but you are talking about a story line. I am talking about their real-life marriage.

Nice to see that Kim promo six months to the day since she left TNA, and on her 32nd birthday too. Anxious to see how WWE uses Gail Kim and when she starts ... just happy she is back.

"This is just one of those instances in which wrestling fans are not supposed to think too much"
Kev,
you should remember this when you watch TNA sometimes.
After all, it is just a show. None of it is all that cerebral!

I haven't watched wrestling in maybe 10 years (in the days of the Rock), but weren't they married then?

Kevin, I was wondering if you heard anything about a 90 day no compete cause with colt cabanna? With ROH's TV debut right around the corner, I see a great time for a returning star for them.

Umanga actually had a good squash match. The fans were way into it. Its not easy to do a match like that and it be exciting.
HHH...what can you say. He strikes me as someone who is determined to be successful and the center of attention whether we like it or not.
Hope Edge keeps the belt for a while. I am a little tired of seeing him drop it...then get it agian...then drop it. It seems to be more of a executive move than part of a storyline. If they (WWE) are not going to make all of the title changes as a part of a storyline the whats the use.

is umaga going to be involved in WM or anything semi-decent anytime soon? He used to be a pretty big part of RAW, and then went to smackdown and didn't wrestle for so long that people kinda forgot about him, WWE did a poor job bringing him back IMO...

Another good episode of Smackdown. Not only was the Jeff Hardy/Edge match really good, the opening segment was as well. I thought it may have been the best Jeff has ever been on the mic in goading Edge into a match, and it planted some seeds that hopefully foreshadow the end of the Edge/Vickie partnership, which I believe has gone as far as it can go. I thought the HHH segment was ok, it wasn't going to win any acting awards but it wasn't cheesy over the top like Monday.
As far as Kozlov goes, it seems you have more faith in the WWE than I. Even though I would like to see HBK face Taker next year at WM if it is indeed going to be Shawn's (and potential Taker's) last Mania, but I could very well see them putting Kozlov out there and hoping Taker can carry him to a good match. They've already forced him into the main even for months even though he's a charismatic black hole, so I'm very much bracing for the opportunity that he will be Taker's opponent.

I have to say that HHH's acting job in the interview was one of the worst I've seen in awhile. Considering the situation, you think you'd be able to summon up natural emotions and ability to really get people to buy into it being real. He failed miserably in that interview. All I could think of as I was watching it was, "now we know why he hasn't gotten any roles since Blade III". I guess the only role he's cut out for is that of a smart-alec DX HHH. Spitting water out on the ring apron, carrying a sledge hammer or wearing a leather jacket doesn't count as portraying a tough guy, to me.

i don't know why wwe is giving kozlov a push if he is going to end up being buried like all the heel monsters (khali, big daddy v, mark henry, snitsky...), and losing to the likes of finlay and cm punk

Kevin , maybe my earlier comment was wrong :(

Hi Kevin - I think both RAW and Smackdown this past week were better than the past few months. Not sure who Gail Kim is so I'll have to reserve my opinion on her until I see her in action. Some other comments (and I won't get on my Triple H bandwagon here) --- are:
Jeff Hardy/Edge --- I thought the opening was great - I think Jeff is very good on the mic (not crazy about his face paint, though) and I'm also hoping this is the beginning to the end of the storyline with Edge/Vickie - BORING. Jeff's match with Edge was very good. I'm really happy to see Edge wrestle again on his own and not always have Chavo/Ryder/Hawkins come in to save him. Although I don't like Edge I think he's a good wrestler on his own, and I was tired of him looking like a wimp. I also sensed either Matt or Cena coming in during the match - not surprising it was Matt. Personally I don't think they'll fight until WM25 --- I think it will be more talk next week and I think Jeff will be the bigger man and walk away...
Re: Undertaker - Kozlov at WM25, no way, Kozlov can't hold his own at a big event like that and would not want me to pay to see that. I think it will be Michaels vs Undertaker this year, and that would be a match to see --- I only see another year or so for Michaels then I see him retiring. And what better way for him to go out then break the Undertaker's streak. I don't know who I'd be for - I like both of them - but I think I'd go for Michaels a little more...
Re: Miz/Morrison and the Bella Twins - cute and slightly funny - put a comic touch in there (although it still can't compare to the time Jamie Noble took Michelle McCool to dinner and tried to impress her by pulling the table cloth out from under the glasses, etc. - that was funny.)
Umaga/Scotty Goldman - who really cares - and since Scotty has been released, that's his last show, I'm sure.. I think Umaga/Kozlov should have a match.
Triple H --- knew eventually it would come out on the show, and I think it brings a touch of reality to kayfabe there in WWE. I think this will lead him going permanently to RAW, and possibly bringing back DX against the Legacy?!?!!? I'd like one more good DX reign. On another note, Orton's credibility is now where Edge's was with all his backup. Orton lost any little respect I had for him when he couldn't come out without his goon squad --- Dibiase I can barely tolerate but Rhodes --- I think an inanimate object has more personality than he does --- BLAH is the word for him.
Anyway, think Wrestlemania is shaping up nicely, and I'm looking forward to this week's shows. Hopefully, they'll be better than in the past month or so after this past week.
Thanks for the great posts you do.

Triple H confounds me. He's not a good actor. He's not good on the mic. He's not smart, witty, clever or funny. He's not charismatic. His moves seem to consist of punching someone in the head, ramming their head into his knee, and then a Pedigree. Even before he was married to Stephanie, he was getting a big (and questionable) push. Was there something there before that's gone away? Did he have some sort of spark that's now diminished? Please assist me in this inquiry.
Also: ZOMG THEY WERE DIVORCED LULZ

I showed my 13 and 8 year old the comments from people thinking the earlier "marriages" were real. They got a good laugh from it.

Hi Kev, I am Russian and I can tell that Kozlov is not a very good transator, since in his promo he said clearly in Russian that he was going to destroy JBL and Michaels on Raw before destroying the Undertaker at Smackdown, but when translating this in English, he was almost impossible to understand. So I guess we should see Kozlov appearing tonight at Raw to attack JBL and Michaels.
