Flair-Jericho confrontation steals show on Raw
Ric Flair has always been gold on the microphone, and Chris Jericho might be the best promo guy in the business today, so it comes as absolutely no surprise that the verbal battle between them that kicked off Raw last night was tremendous.
Jericho cut a promo on Flair that was among his best ever – and that’s really saying something. He has the ability to convey that his character truly believes everything he is saying. As Lance Storm once explained to me in an interview about the art of delivering an effective heel promo, “the key is to take something that has a basis in truth and exaggerate it.”
Flair, making his first appearance on a WWE TV show since June, more than held up his end, as he was intense without going too far over the top.
Judging by this segment, it seems as if the “Nature Boy” is not coming out of retirement to face Jericho, which is a good thing. Flair vowed to stay retired and said that he had too much respect for Shawn Michaels to wrestle again. Plus, if Flair did get back in the ring, it would prove that everything Jericho said about him last night was true.
There are several possibilities for WrestleMania 25 as it pertains to this angle. If Mickey Rourke ends up wrestling Jericho, the actor could have Flair in his corner. Of course, if Flair does return to the ring – which I still wouldn’t rule out – the roles could be reversed, with Rourke in Flair’s corner. It might be a long shot, but I also could see Steve Austin coming out of retirement to wrestle Jericho, with Flair and Rourke involved in some capacity. That’s my favorite scenario.
I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
Flair also engaged in a war of words with Jericho the last time he had a meaningful segment on Raw (I’m not counting his cameo during McMahon’s Million Dollar Mania). That one ended with Flair challenging Jericho to a street fight in the parking lot, but Triple H showed up to prevent it. Surprisingly, that confrontation wasn’t referenced last night. …
It also seemed odd not to have a backstage scene in which Flair interacted with Michaels, given their history. I would have showed the two of them greeting each other and catching up, and then have JBL interrupt them and tell Michaels that he needed to speak with him alone. Michaels, still under JBL’s control, would have had to excuse himself from his conversation with Flair and do as he was told. …
Speaking of JBL, he continues to do an awesome job on the mic in this angle. He’s right up there with Jericho and Randy Orton when it comes to promos. …
It seems that Michaels’ wife, Rebecca, might be making an appearance at Sunday’s No Way Out pay-per-view. If this was TNA, she’d take a bribe from JBL and turn on her husband. …
Even though there was a non-finish (as expected), you can’t argue with getting an Orton-Undertaker match on free TV. Unlike two weeks ago when Shane McMahon beat up Legacy, his interference here was logical and helped build his match with Orton at No Way Out. …
It was smart for WWE to keep replaying Legacy’s beat-down on Shane O’Mac from last week. I guess the thinking is that if it is shown enough times, people will forget all about Shane’s Superman act from the previous week. …
That was a fun six-man tag match between John Cena, Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston and the team of Jericho, Kane and Mike Knox. Jericho’s Codebreaker on Kingston for the finish was a little mistimed, but it didn’t look as bad on the replay. Kingston appeared to oversell it to make up for the botch, but that actually did more harm than good. …
Kingston is really starting to connect with the crowd. Hopefully, he will be booked to make a good accounting of himself in Sunday’s elimination chamber match. …
I’m curious as to what the point was of Stephanie McMahon being shown backstage speaking to someone on the phone. Could it be that it was Triple H, and WWE is finally going to acknowledge that they are married? I seriously doubt it will happen, but it could make for a good angle if WWE decided to go that route. You could have Triple H win the WWE title in the elimination chamber match Sunday, and then have Orton-Triple H for the title at WrestleMania. There is a back story, as Orton suffered a broken collarbone that last time he was in the ring with Triple H. The problem with that scenario is that it would leave Cena without a logical opponent for WrestleMania – unless, of course, Batista came back earlier than expected from his injury. …
Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes looked good in getting a decisive win over Cryme Tyme. …
When DiBiase and Rhodes jumped The Undertaker, it reminded me of how their fathers both played major roles in Undertaker’s debut at the Survivor Series pay-per-view in 1990. Undertaker wrestled as part of Ted DiBiase’s team, and he pinned Dusty Rhodes to eliminate “The American Dream.” Undertaker later eliminated himself when he continued to beat on Dusty outside the ring and was counted out. …
The CM Punk-William Regal Intercontinental title match was way too short. Unless one of them is injured, that was ridiculous. …
I’ve seen enough of the “Cena ’nuff” signs. It was funny a couple years ago, but it’s time for the Cena haters to get some new material. It’s about as original as putting “3:16” on a sign. …
Cena really came off looking like a star by being associated with major sports celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter and Reggie Bush in that Gillette promotion. Oh, and there also was some NASCAR guy there who looked as if he wasn’t even old enough to shave.

What about Jericho/Cena at Mania? Jericho win s the title in the Elimination Chamber and then has to defend against Cena at Mania.
Then you have the WWE's two most "mainstream" wrestlers in the main event with the possibility of Flair and Rourke involved in some capacity.
That equals HUGE mainstream media coverage.

I actually thought the same thing when I saw Stephanie talking on the phone. The more I think about it the more I think it's a distinct possibility. They haven't even foreshadowed Orton-Cena and have had the most story build to the Orton-McMahons feud. It would seem like that story would continue and Cena being interjected into that would seem unnatural. I actually think Orton-Triple H could have a better build. But yes, I have no idea who that would leave Cena with unless Batista returns. If it's Cena-Orton I'd have to think that Stephanie ends up part of Legacy

Yes, because wives turning on their husbands has never happened in the WWE.....
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Sure, but at least there was some buildup and it made sense.

Do you think that there is a clear Wrestlemania plan for Jericho? In the past month, he's feuded with Stephanie McMahon, Mickey Rourke, and now Ric Flair. Now Stephanie is dealing with Randy Orton, Rourke and Flair aren't real wrestlers, and there's about a 0 percent chance of Jericho winning the Elimination Chamber.
If a match with Austin doesn't materialize, what's the next most logical move for Jericho?

It's about that time for another Scott Steiner interview .

Just FYI, I was at Raw last night and after they went off the air Cena came out before Orton went to the back. They held a dark match between the two for the belt and billed it as a "streetfight."
Pretty good one between the two of them with Cena being sent into the ring steps back-to-back, Orton grabbing the mic and looking like he was about to say something before cracking Cena in the head with it, an RKO before a delayed pin Cena kicked out of, and finally a missed punt that led into the FU, er, Attitude Adjustment.
Looked like it was possibly a setup for a PPV match soon, something where they could get used to working with each other again to make sure they hit their spots, keep their pacing and all that. Fun to see something like this after they go off the air.
They also had two dark matches before going on air: Jamie Noble over TJ Wilson and John Morrison (w/ The Miz) over Goldust.
Other than that, the Flair/Jericho promo was excellent for exactly the reasons you indicated. JBL's getting massive heat right now because of how well he's playing his role as well, and Orton just has to show his face to get booed. That's three solid heels getting the job done on one show. Not bad at all.

I'm curious to see where this Flair/Jericho thing goes.
I really hope the payoff isn't Flair wrestling again at Mania. The McMahons have no shame, they'd erase the memory of Flair's great farewell if it meant a few more PPV buys.

Jericho was simply BRILLIANT cutting that promo. One of the best jobs I've seen in 25 years. Pairing him with Flair was pure gold. The other solid moment was the intense look on Orton's face when Undertaker came into the ring. No fear. Most other wrestlers bail out of the ring and poop their trunks as soon as the Deadman's music hits. All in all one of the better RAW episodes in a long long time.

Steve Austin is reportedly one bad bump away from paralysis so I don't think anyone should encourage him to wrestle. Saying that there is no safer pair of hands than Jericho if they had to go through with it. I'd still love Jericho to wrestle Rourke as he would get some deserved mainstream recognition.

If the storyline for Wrestlemania goes to a HH/Orton inter-promotional match I can think of one angle that no one is looking at that makes a whole lot of sense.
Now if HBK is booked to go over JBL at NWO, I would set up a match with HBK/Cena for Wrestlemania with the basis being the whole JBL angle and the age old "Does he still have it" question. This is more logical than Cena/Jericho which is not a Main Event that Vince probably would want. Jericho & JBL will probably be placed in Money in the Bank if anything. That is how I would book this.

Kev do you think after last night that their is any chance of Cena losing the title if so to who????
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I don't think he's losing it Sunday.

"I’ve seen enough of the “Cena ’nuff” signs. It was funny a couple years ago, but it’s time for the Cena haters to get some new material"
I don't hate Cena, but to me, the white rapper persona went out with Vanilla Ice. It is so passe that I almost think Vince Russo is behind it. If Cena were to be repackaged, I may like his character a bit more.

Jericho's promo was very good.
Orton/Undertaker was Ok while it lasted.
The Orton/McMahon storyline makes no more sense than most of the crap story lines on TNA.
Punk has some scores to settle with both Jericho and Orton at some point. What is he waiting for? He is being wasted from what I can tell.
What was that match between Punk and Regal about? What a non pay-off to to a virtually non storyline. Is that the most creative thing anybody can think of with these guys?
Stephanie and Shane have been boring the hell out of me this go round. I can barely watch.
I suspect golden girl Steph is really dragging down WWE. What are her qualifications again?
Dibiase/Rhodes bore me also. Cody looks like a confused kid with bad posture.
Cryme Time also seems to be going nowhere.
I did not find this show as fascinating as you Kev. Big time yawn overall. I'm almost ready to tune out if things don't heat up and become at least somewhat interesting soon.

Always hating??????????Cryme Tyme

3 words "Raw is Jericho!"
I also thought Stephanie was talking to HHH on the phone when she referenced "we both have a lot going on this weekend." Also sensed a little friction as there were no personal emotion on her end of the conversation. Is there any point in Santino being out there if they don't give him the mic?

Hey....Question: What do you think is going to happen with The Undertaker? Any idea who he might be facing at Mania? At first I thought it might be Shawn and now I am confused as hell. @.@
I agree about Flair & Jericho. They totally owned the show.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I've been thinking it's Undertaker-Kozlov. I know that won't excite people, but Taker hasn't always had classic matchups at Mania -- Mark Henry, Big Show/A-Train, etc.
I'm thinking Taker-Shawn happens next year at Mania.

I was really worried Shane wasn't going to hit the Van Terminator. He almost lost his footing before he jumped & he had a really nervous look on his face.
Once again, Lawler & Cole made it a point to note that CM Punk was "lucky to get a win." Any idea why they're still booking Punk as a fluke champion?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I'm as confused as you are when it comes to the way WWE books Punk.

Any chance Christian makes his debut at WM 25 as a suprise entrant in the MITB match?
Or will he interfere in the match with the Hardys?
Posted by: Cam | February 10, 2009 9:13 PM
While it did make sense for Shane to make the save for Undertaker, shouldn't Kane have been involved somehow? The only reason Undertaker was there was as a favor to his brother and Kane just leaves him to a beat down by three guys?
So Christian comes to ECW and makes fun of a speech impediment? Not a very baby face thing to do. I was hoping Santino would show up and tell Christian he can't just walk in off the street and get a title match.

Christopher—Notwithstanding his entrance music, I don't think Cena has really been sold as a "rapper" for a long time.
But man, if you ever want a laugh, go back and watch that Royal Rumble (was it '03, does anyone remember?) where Cena "rapped" his entrance all the way down the ramp, around the ring and into the Rumble. Easily twice as funny as the Shockmaster.

Cam, re: Christian.
Gonna say no to that guess. ;-)

Hmm. So they changed TJ Walker to Tyson Kidd.

Triple H-Orton would be a TREMENDOUS main event. Good call.
You called it with JBL-HBK. I'll bet HBK's wife will turn on him -- claiming HBK cannot handle his finances. Somehow, when the dust settles, it will be a three-way match between Cena-JBL-HBK for the title at Wrestlemania. The JBL-HBK storyline has been too good to abruptly end at No Way Out.
Posted by: Cavuto Goon | February 11, 2009 7:55 AM
I am really starting to think more and more as I sent in last week HHH is gonna come to aid the McMahons.
I can almost see it now. Orton is cutting a promo next Monday on Raw after taking out Shane this Sunday at No Way Out when all of a sudden the lights go out and The Game's music hits. Awesome!
Posted by: DS | February 11, 2009 11:53 AM
Kevin, do you think they might be considering a "throw in the towel" angle with HBK and his wife on Sunday? It could be HBK coming close to the win, but then slips up (or JBL cheats behind the ref's back) and JBL pounces. HBK becomes a bloody mess, and his wife, sitting ringside, throws in the towel with tears in her eyes. I think it could make for a great angle with a huge payoff between the two heading into Mania...

What this still proves to me is that people hate Cena more for the Hip Hop stuff than his in ring ability or his on the mic skills.
WWE missed the boat with the Cryme Tyme/ John Cena / Mickie James stable but actually on SD I have hopes for a EGO Unlimited stable ( Miz/ Morrison/ Kendrick/ Ezekiel)
Jericho has got the bad guy persona on the mic thing down faster than any other "face quickly heel" than I can remember...
Christian and Jeff vs Edge and Matt Hardy in near future? Wow say that one 4 years ago the internet would have broken to smithereens!!!!
Thx eck!
