Fantastic Jack Swagger-Christian match highlights ECW
Last night’s ECW title match between Jack Swagger and Christian is a strong early candidate for best televised match of the week.
This was a pay-per-view-quality contest, which begs the question: Why wasn’t this match saved for WrestleMania 25? Hopefully, this was just the first in a series of matches between these two and they will be given a spot on the big show on April 5.
We all know how good Christian is, but I am more impressed with Swagger every time I see him. The young champion kept up with the veteran challenger every step of the way.
With his clean win last night, Swagger now holds victories over Christian, Matt Hardy and Finlay. Not bad for a guy who made his WWE debut just five months ago.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
Another guy that is really impressing me is Tyson Kidd. I have no idea if the guy can cut a good promo, but if he can, look out. When Evan Bourne returns, I could see these two having an exciting program. …
When I saw Kidd’s opponent, Matt Boyce, standing in the ring, I was thinking that he must be the son of one of the Mulkey brothers. Less than a minute later, Matt Striker referred to him as the third Mulkey brother. You know what they say about great minds.
For those who aren’t familiar with Bill and Randy Mulkey, they were a pair of unathletic-looking jobbers who worked for Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1980s. They were squashed so thoroughly every time they wrestled that they gained a cult following and actually qualified for the 1987 Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup tag team tournament, which featured some of the best teams in wrestling. ...
I can’t think of a better way to start the show than to have Alicia Fox getting her groove on in the ring. …
I’m just not into this Tommy Dreamer angle at all, but the crowd seems to be with him so I suppose it’s not the worst idea.

Comments
I have to admit that I've watched the past couple episodes of ECW after not hardly watching it at all. Having said that, is it me, or does Matt Striker seem like a shining star when it comes to color commentating?
I think that he could be terrific as a color commentator or play by play man since it appears he does a little bit of both anyway with Todd Grisham not being quite up to par.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm a big fan of Striker on commentary.

Kevin - I'm not a big ECW fan/viewer, but I normally tune in and talk on the phone while it's on, just half watching it, but I will agree with you on the Christian/Swagger match. It was definitely one of the best matches I've seen on ECW in a LONG TIME. While I was hoping Christian won, I think his losing is building up to him taking the belt at WM. Although I'm not sure about when Christian fell out of the ring --- I know wrestling is scripted, but I know real injuries do occur (accidents happen, etc.) --- Christian either really did a great sell of having a hurt hand/arm or he really hurt the hand/arm.... Hope it wasn't the latter, and he's out for awhile. Your thoughts on this???
The rest of the show was so/so --- Tyson Kidd - I like him but am holding judgement for awhile.
Evan Bourne --- I am so looking forward to his return --- I think he's really good.
Although I didn't care what the outcome of the Dreamer/Paul Burchhill match was, I like the comedy aspect, when Katie interfered and the Boogeyman started to pull her under the ring. Maybe I've got a sick sense of humor but I thought that was amusing.
RESPONSE FROM KE: My guess is that Christian was just doing a great job of selling the injury.

I was impressed at the psychology in the Swagger-Christian match. Swagger used an impressive array of moves to target the shoulder- not just one shoulder-breaker or a dive into the ring post- and Christian did an excellent job selling it in his own offense. It gave the match a coherent storyline that so many matches lack. I see Cena trying to pull this off from time to time, but he usually abandons the injury at some point, making it unbelievable. The fact that Swagger won after Christian's shoulder injury rendered him unable to hook his finisher brought the champ's strategy full circle. That realism is the type of narrative that keeps me involved in a match without having to thoroughly suspend my disbelief so actively.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Well said.

This why I love to read your blog. This week you have mentioned S D Jones, (pre Hot Stuff) Eddie Gilbert and Bill and Randy Mulkey.
Any shot at Rick McGraw (RIP) or George South ref later in the week.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Really shows my age, doesn't it?

That was my thought about Christian/Swagger - I figured his return was leading up to a title match at WrestleMania.
You're right, though, we could still see one. I just hope Christian isn't put into the MITB match and the ECW title situation is ignored.
One name I'd like to see in the MITB is Tommy Dreamer. I know he wouldn't win it, but he would take some crazy bumps ... and probably cause some long-forgotten "ECW" chants...

ECW, to me, is the most consistently exciting shows the WWE has right now. They've done a great job in the last 2 years creating good young superstars and the ECW belt itself has become more credible with Mark Henry, Hardy, and Swagger holding the title.
I think swagger has a great future in the WWE if he can continue to improve his Mic skillz and cut decent promos.

I wonder if they have plans for a gimmick match for Christian and Jack Swagger a Wrestlemania? TLC Match or Extreme Rules match or something?

I missed ECW this week, but i'll take your word for it that Swagger & Christian had a good match.
But do you really want to see them two one-on-one at WrestleMania XXV?

Kevin, The Swagger vs CC match was great, but remember the reason finlay was put on ECW is to work with the young talent. Even though he beat Hardy which most advid wrestling fans new he was leaving ECW he looked stiff and unappealing, but with working with fnaly on the road and house shows and NWO, Finlay has made him a better wrestler not with amature background but with hard nose wrestling, he has impressed me after last nite lets hope he stays on ECW with bourne comming back rather see those two at WM. CC in MITBM

I'm disappointed that Christian lost last night because that means more than likely he won't be getting drafted when I go to see it in Atlanta. The way I see it is that Christian is now going to take the title from Swagger at Mania, but the draft is the week after Mania so they wouldn't be so quick to have the ECW Champion switch shows. However, if Christian doesn't win the title he has a shot at being moved to Raw or Smackdown, but I would've liked to see him as a champion before he went to one of those shows.

I think you may have stumbled onto something here. After mentioning the Mulkeys and now someone else mentions George South...it makes me think of the greatest jobbers of all time. You know...guys like the Brooklyn Brawler, Lodi, Dwayne Gill, Barry Horowitz, Rocky King, and Norman Smiley! Where have the days of the career jobber gone? When did it become unfashionable to make a career out of forgetting what happened the last time quietly stood in a wrestling ring when the "Iron Man" entrance music was playing?
I think you would get a great response from an All-Time Greatest Jobbers List, Eck.

I agree that an All-Time Greatest Jobbers list would be awesome. However, can Duane Gill really be on that list? He WAS the WWF Light Heavyweight Champion for over a year.

It was a great ECW.
The Gabriel vs Henry Match was also ok. with so many up rising stars making a name for themselves with undefeated streaks, Gabriel was defeated in a good fashion.
Henry dominated for almost the entire Match, but it didn't take [from me, at least] the hope that maybe DJ could manage to win the match, somehow.
Sometimes losing can make more than a huge victory, for the sake of the character's development.
I didn't know about those guys Mulkeys. so Collin Dellaney was somesort of revival of that type of gimmick?

what an excellent match between christian and swagger. do u think matches like these catch vince's eye and let him see that christian deserves to be a main eventer?

I also agree with the All-Time Jobbers list! you MUST do it!

Brilliant observation, Zane. ZERO title defenses, but the longest reigning Light Heavyweight Champion in WWE history.

It's only February, but Swagger-Christian is a strong contender for match-of-the-year honours. If I had any doubts about Swagger's potential, this spectacle erased them.
Jobber: Dusty Wolfe.

I think that the Christian/Swagger is if not the best the ECW match i believe I seen on the program if not its been a real time i want to congratulate on your birth of your new child and was wondering if he's aboy did you name him shawn michealeck or if she is a girl is here name shawna michelle eck.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Thank you. It's is a girl and no, that's not here name. However, if it had been a boy, his name was going to be Shawn Michael Eck. True story.
