Triple H sees the other side of nepotism on Smackdown

A pet peeve of one of my colleagues at The Baltimore Sun is how the word “irony” is often misused. The running joke in the office is that every time we think something is ironic, he’ll shoot us down and say that it does not fit the definition (and hilarity ensues).

I think I have him this time, however. On Smackdown last night, an authority figure versus rebel angle between Smackdown general manager Vickie Guerrero and Triple H began to heat up. Now, considering who Triple H is married to and how much power he wields backstage, the fact that he is the one getting screwed over by a female in charge (who is married to a big star on the show) has to be ironic. I’m willing to bet that some of the boys in the locker room see the irony in it.

Whether it’s ironic or not, and even though angles with heel authority figures abusing their power have been done to death, I’m looking forward to more interaction between Triple H and Guerrero. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is building to a Triple H-Edge match at WrestleMania 25.

Other thoughts on last night’s show:

It was a pretty average episode overall. The main event between the Hardys and Edge and The Big Show wasn’t bad. I wonder if Big Show walking out on Edge is the start of a babyface turn? If it is, that means Show will have turned four times in a year. …

OK, be honest: How many of you Googled “Vickie Guerrero nude?” If you really have to see Vickie in the buff, click here. …

Kizarny’s debut was OK, if not spectacular. His finisher (a double underhook into a DDT) was pretty cool. …

When MVP finally has had enough of the taunting and he attacks Mr. Kennedy, won’t he be justified? By the way, did you know Mr. Kennedy’s movie comes out on DVD Tuesday? …
Shelton Benjamin’s promo was perhaps the best one he has done. That being said, it still wasn’t anything special. …

I know that Vladimir Kozlov is a monster heel and all, but I’m still surprised that Hurricane Helms didn’t get in a little more offense. …

Maria and Eve Torres must not have many friends in the locker room since no one came out to make the save last week or this week when Michelle McCool brutalized them. I guess the Bella Twins were busy with Carlito and Primo. …

What happened to Festus’ infatuation with Maria? …

I hardly ever fast forward through any wrestling program, but I admit that my finger was on the button during The Great Khali and Finlay versus Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins match.

Random thoughts for ya Kevin. The Big Show also left the main event at the "Tribute" when he was teamed up with Jericho and Orton. Not sure what he's going to get out of leaving these people hangin', but I guess it could be a turn of the face. I did get a kick out of HHH-Vickie segment, but was shocked that there were actual pictures(thank god for big black boxes). No one needs to see that Kevin. I was hoping that she would have stood her ground about the RR announcement though, that would have made great TV watchin' HHH squirm. I'm not at all impressed with Kizarny, IMO he's reminds of Gold Dust on crack. I have to say, however, I wasn't expecting and MVP win, no matter how bad the Kiz was. He will win against someone bigger, and more unexpected, than a newbie. During the Hardy-Edge/Show match, I did notice JR and Taz talking about people trusting their partners and how close the brothers Hardy were, so I was very disappointed that we didn't see the outings of the "feud". Could it be possible that they will use Christian as the perp? Why doesn't McCool just rally with Natalya or Victoria? BTW, where have they been? Maybe McCool rallying with Natalya or Victoria isn't such a good idea, she's definitely not a leader. Natalya could be though. I do agree with you, it wasn't a great show. I played Gameboy most of the show until the main event. Almost wish I had just continued my game. Keep up the great work, Kevin. Here's to a great 2009! \_/ \_/

I am serious if i here anymore about behind enemy line colimbia i'm going to lose it!!!!!!!!!!!
Kec, you can't tell me that you are not tired of hearing about ....i heard on a web site that it was a poor movie.....

unertaker apperaing was great, and such a suprise, who would have thought against Shelton benjamin as well?

dont get me wrong triple h is great and him feuding with Vicky and edgw would be great, but he does dominate most shows, surely Jeff deserves more mic time, he is the WWE champion after all

I noticed they didn mention Maryse's injury, and news on when she will return kevin?

Because I had been excited to see Kizarny, I was disappointed by reports that WWE officials were souring on him even before his television debut. But having seen him, I understand and tend to agree. His work was imprecise (he slipped during a flying-press pin, for example), and his physique is...unimpressive.

What's the point of having two developmental companies, I wonder, if new-talent debuts look like that. I do hope he succeeds, but I think Laurinaitis might have called him up prematurely.

I wonder how much bleach it took to clean the eyes of whoever took those photos of Vickie?

Double Yawn!

What a waste of two hours of my life. WWE really mailed this one in without much effort. They should have just run a best of 2008 New Years special.

The entire show was pretty much boring. Michelle McCool finally turned heel I guess. Seems to me the Eve stated a few weeks ago that she wanted to get in the ring to wrestle. Looks like she will get her wish. Triple H and Vickie started off with a good segment. Gotta admit the afterthought of Vicki nude makes my stomach turn inside out. Always great to see the Hardys tag up and winning the match made it even more sweeter.

What was the point of those Vickie Guerrero pictures?

I turned Smackdown off after Triple H's promo (i wish he'd do an intelligent promo, not just fall back on the cheap pops from fat jokes), so didn't see much of the show.

I hardly ever fast forward through any wrestling program, but I admit that my finger was on the bottom during The Great Khali and Finlay versus Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins match.

Uh, something you're not telling us about your personal life, Kevin? Actually, I think you've told us more than enough :)

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Oops! I meant "button" not "bottom." I made the change. Thanks!

Kevin,
Have you heard/read anything lately about whether Christian has, indeed, signed with the WWE? If so, seems like him showing up during the Edge/Hardy match at the Rumble would be a good time to re-introduce him. Over the years, there's been a definite lack of shock appearances at PPVs. That used to be one of the highlights to me of watching PPVs; such as Kane showing up at the HBK/UT Hell in a Cell match, etc.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Everything I read says that Christian is coming to WWE, but whether he has actually signed yet no one seems to know.

OK. I didn't REALLY want to see Vickie nude, but since you were so kind to link it...

Kinda like having to look at a car wreck.

But what was that HHH said about them being on EBAY????

Kizarny's character is still too child molester-esque for me.

I like how HHH makes fun of Vickie Guerrero for being overweight every week on Smackdown, yet his wife won't allow the Raw cameras to shoot her below the waist.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Here's the funny part about Stephanie and the camera shots. I was about 10-15 feet away from her backstage when Raw was in D.C. She didn't look any different than the last time a full body shot of her was on camera. I had a friend with me and we both agreed that she looked great.

I'm a Finaly and "face Khali" fan, but I did take a shower during the match.

Why did'nt Helm mount any offense? What happened to the big comeback? I quess he should'nt have clowned MVP. Hey may be off to "jobber-to-the-stars-ville soon.

Finally, that Kizany match was the WORST match I have ever seen in my life!!! And I mean the WORST! If there is anything lower than Developmental send him there, please. Even the crickets were quiet.

Smackdown was pretty good, I can't complain about it a lot.

I'm not a huge fan of the "goofy" Triple H, but I guess that's what they want. If they do go forward with Edge/Triple H at WrestleMania, then I hope things get a little more serious.

The one thing I'm really looking forward to is Umaga's return. It looked like he was going to have a good feud with Big Show before his injury. He's had good matches in the past with Jeff Hardy and Triple H; I'd like to see what he could do with Undertaker, Show, Finlay, and Kozlov.

And, yes, I searched "Vickie Guerrero nude photos." What a sad way to spend a Friday night...

Chris that's disgusting and you should be punished for doing it. I mean worse than actually seeing Vickie nude.

I bet they made some poor intern take those photos. So nasty. :(

A definite missable show of Smackdown. I like HHH - whether as a heel or a face. However the Vickie fat jokes I don't find funny at all....I mean Vickie isn't that big at all really and probably average or below the average size for an American woman? Yeah it's all a show, but is not the kind of image I would like to see WWE portraying. You don't see HHH have a crack about JR's weight

That was one of the weaker episodes of SmackDown in recent memory. No matter, as I am officially boycotting SD until this pointless and overdrawn MVP losing streak ends.

Total Chick Perspective here: I hate Michelle McCool. I guess sleeping with the Undertaker means you don't have to sell either? P's me off that Natalya and Victoria aren't Diva-ish enough.

PS. Kevin I hate your Ravens and hope Tennessee pulls an Earthquake (the wrestler from my youth) and squashes them. But Kevin I like your blog/articles so can't hold the football thing against you too much

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: The Ravens defense has a catch phrase: "We'd rather be feared than loved." I think it will be a competitive game next week.

Vickie Guerrero is one of the ALL Time Great Female Heels. I cannot name one that comes close. WOOOO

"What happened to Festus’ infatuation with Maria? …"

I had totally forgotten about it. Apparently, that is what WWE wanted us to do.

In the song "Ironic," by Alanis Morisette, she lists no actual examples of irony.

"Everything I read says that Christian is coming to WWE, but whether he has actually signed yet no one seems to know."

Didn't we have a similar situation not very long ago with a certain Mr. Kevin Nash? Everyone everywhere was completely convinced he was going back to WWE for a big retirement run, then next thing you know he's back with TNA. I wonder if TNA's leaking all these false leads, maybe even Russo himself.

Thank you for clarifying how I missed Smackdown! when it was on the TV next to me for two hours. I read the spoilers and the WWE.com recap, and both sounded good, so I couldn't figure out why I didn't get anything of out of it, but the "pretty average episode overall" explains everything.

Ironically, my pet peeve is how wrong people like your colleague are when they think the word "irony" is often misused. Outside of the traditional definition of irony (getting results contrary to the intent), there are four types: situational, verbal, dramatic, and Socratic.

Situational irony is a subjective sense of "unfairness." The aforementioned song "Ironic" is chalked full of situational irony. The example you gave is a textbook example of dramatic irony, where the characters portray one thing, but the meaning is hidden to them and the audience knowingly appreciates the irony.

Check SarcasmSociety.com/irony for further explanations (no affiliation to me).

I see a Big Show/Edge feud to kill time before Wrestlemania. Undertaker/Benjamin will be new and fresh, but will Benjamin even have a chance? Since Undertaker is undefeated at Wrestlemania, who do you think the 25th anniversary show will have him matched against, and do you think it will be his retirement match?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: My guess is Umaga.

I read on a website that mvp loosing strek has something to do with he is cocky or somethign allong thoose lines.....
