Looking at Mickey Rourke and WrestleMania

I’m sure most people have heard by now that Mickey Rourke has said that he will be appearing at WrestleMania 25 on April 5, and the inference is that he will wrestling in a match. Last night on the red carpet at the SAG awards, the star of The Wrestler said that he was going to be in Houston for the pay-per-view event and he specifically mentioned wanting to get a piece of Chris Jericho.

Obviously, this is a major coup for WWE to have a potential Oscar-winning actor (the Academy Awards ceremony takes place on Feb. 22) stepping into the ring at the company’s marquee show. I think it’s bigger than Donald Trump’s involvement at WrestleMania 23 and certainly bigger than Floyd Mayweather’s match last year.

It’s somewhat surprising that WWE is doing a tie-in with The Wrestler since WWE chairman Vince McMahon reportedly hated the film, which paints a realistic portrait of pro wrestling on the independent level, warts and all. But after the film garnered Oscar nominations, McMahon apparently realized that an association with Rourke made good business sense. It’s funny, because after WWE aired a clip of The Wrestler on Smackdown Friday, I joked that Rourke should appear as his movie character at WrestleMania.

It goes without saying that this would be the biggest match of Jericho’s career if he does wrestle Rourke. Jericho is a smart choice for the role, not just because he plays his character so well and would do a great job of building up the match, but he also is talented enough in the ring that he likely could carry Rourke to a decent match.

I have a feeling that the Motion Pictures Academy of Arts and Sciences is going to turn its nose up at Rourke’s decision to participate in a wrestling match, but I doubt that matters much to him. Rourke has always been a free spirit, as evidenced by his decision to become a professional boxer in the early ’90s at the age of 40.

It always angers me when people in the sports and entertainment worlds get all up in arms when one of their own does anything in pro wrestling. You just have to laugh when they claim that guys such as Mike Tyson and Lawrence Taylor are disgracing themselves by working with WWE. Yeah, stepping into a WWE ring is much worse than a rape conviction, drug suspensions and arrests for offenses such as assault, DUI and failure to pay child support.

But I think McMahon actually thrives on that negativity, as it plays into his us-against-them mentality. And I’m sure he loves the free publicity as he laughs all the way to the bank.

You go Mickey Rourke !
As far as McMahon , sometimes it seems that nothing is off-limits as long as it makes him money ( no disrespect to Rourke or the movie).
Not meaning to stray too far off topic Kevin , you mentioned in an earlier post re: Wrestlmania , the possibility of Steve Austin returning for a match . During the late 90's and early 00's , I was a huge Austin fan . It's too bad his career was cut short by injuries . I for one would not be all that thrilled to see a token "stunner", followed by an endless amount of beer guzzling . He's surely got too much ring rust .... too many years, and too many beers.

The biggest match of Jericho's career? Hardly... it may be the most overhyped of his career, but the 1st ever undisputed champion has had numerous matches already that would be more important than fighting Mickey Rourke at WM 25... this isn't Lashley getting a rub from the Donald, this is an all time great we're talking about here.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: To us wrestling fans it's not his biggest match, but people who never heard of Chris Jericho will hear about him if he gets in the ring with Mickey Rourke. That's why it big -- and it will be his biggest payday as well.

A Rourke vs Jericho match would be huge, and has the potential to be the biggest match in wrestling in a while, Rourke would defiantly be one of the biggest stars ever to appear on WWE. Though I wonder what the storline would be? Surly they cant just say after Rourke acted bieng a wrestler he wanted to give it a go for real, every fan knows wrestling is not entirely real ect but WWE never shows that. Would be a tough one for creative, any ideas on what the angle could be? Maybe Jericho is annoyed and jelous of Rourke's praise (which suits Jericho's personality perfectly) and wants to wrestle him to show the fans should really love him, but it turns out Rourke aint a bad wrestler

It's going to be so great if they actually play up "The Ram" character. I'm very interested to see how they set this up.

it has the potential to make Jericho as well known as the rock or te Hulkster, its been a while since wrestling hasproduced a world renowed name, only 4 have been;
The rock
Stone Cold
the undertaker
hulk hogan

no disrespect to any other wrestlers, bu tyhey are not as well known, for example my parents would have no idea who HHH is, this could make Jericho huge, and he deserves it!

At Royal Rumble someone was holding a sign that said "Ram Jam".

I could see fans getting behind the character of Randy The Ram Robinson.

I doubt Rourke will won the Oscar regardless of his participation in Wrestlemania. I cannot see any set of circumstances that would cause the Academy to not award an actor like Frank Langella after he turned in a performance like he did. I'm not debating if Rourke's performance is better or not, but ever since the nominees were announced I knew he wasn't going to get it. At any rate, it's an honor to be nominated and I'm sure Rourke isn't taking that lightly. If he's really that pissed, he can always commisserate with the guys from Brokeback Mountain and There will be Blood.

(totally off topic)

Frank Langella really isn't in the running for the Oscar this year, it's a 2-way race between Rourke and Penn.

The big advantages for Rourke are a) Penn already has a best actor oscar, and b) Hollywood LOVES an underdog/comeback story.

The award this year is really Rourke's to lose.

As for WM25 - I would be very curious to see how they handle it in creative and whether they bill it as Randy "The Ram" Robinson or Mickey Rourke.

It seems the easiest way would be to play on how some WWE star is [mad] because Mickey Rourke is getting all this credit for "pretending" to, err, pretend...to fight...

And Mickey Rourke could play up his experience as a boxer and how he got coached by a lot of pro wrestlers leading up to the movie.

It could be fun ^_^

It's kind of appropriate that they'd pair a great actor like Mickey Rourke with one of WWE's better actors in Chris Jericho.

I'm not sure of Rourke's wrestling promo skills outside of the film, but it'll be interesting to see if they'll let him cut a live in-ring promo (albeit pre-written) with Jericho and let the sparks fly.

OK Eck, here's a shot in the dark, gimme your 2 cents on it.
Remember Hacksaw got berated by Jericho for being a washed up has been a while back? Well...who does Rourke play in the movie? Tie in something to the effect of Rourke saying he has a new respect for vets like Duggan beyond their peaks still doing it,and some kinda negative feedback to Jericho talking him down, since JEricho's never been there, and Rourke can also say he's been a washed up has been actor too in reality, so he relates to Duggan and takes offence to Jericho's comments...lead up build to a match...?
Maybe this happened too long ago for casuals to remember but the light went off in my brain as soon as he mentioned Jericho watch out...
again just a thought...I think it's not the most farfetched idea I've ever heard...

Mickey Rourke can kiss that Oscar goodbye. When will the RAW recap be up, I'm sure there will be lots of positive commentary LOL.

its obvious what will happen....It will be the return of the rock for one match only v the ram......now that i would pay double to see.....

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the past few weeks I've noticed RAW and ECW have been replaying on Saturday nights on Universal HD (channel 250 for most Comcast subscribers in MD). Just figured I'd point that out for anyone who hasn't heard about it yet.

Respectfully, Jeremy, I don't even see the best Oscar award as a race this year. Langella is an actor that everyone thought was destined for at least one Oscar in his lifetime very early on, who then got sidetracked and receieved almost no leading roles throughout his career, but still turned in some good supporting performances. Now that he's turned in what people are calling the performance of his life, I don't see any way they're not going to give it to him. I'd agree about the underdog thing, but Langella is also an underdog, plus he's a lot older than Rourke. Chances are Rourke will at least have a shot at another Oscar if he's able to land the right role, while this is probably Langella's last shot. Add on the subject matter of the respective movies, and the fact that the Academy would lean more towards a movie about American politics than indy wrestling, and I see absolutely no way they're going to pass up this chance to give it to Langella. If anyone thinks that's a snub, well it wouldn't be the first one ever and it wouldn't be the biggest.

Kev, you said that the only way that Edge can catch up to HHH in title wins would be if Stef divorced HHH and married Edge. Well, that can't happen because Edge is already married to his beloved Vicki!!!!!

Why not go a few steps farther. Have Mickey Rouke win the MITB Match and later in the night cash in and become champ. Oh that's right Vince Russo isn't booking this match.

I don't think Rourke will win the Oscar. He accused Penn of being a homophobe and I don't think the Oscar people will like a smear campaign like that.

I think the line of the night goes to the fan who yelled out "He can't read!" just before Orton read his written statement. His reaction was priceless.

Hey Kev, did u happen to see Laryy King last night with Mickey Rourke and Jericho. It was a great interview with Jericho staying pretty much in character taking up the challenge but it seems now that Rourke dosent want to wrestle him

yes, it's true that the Rourke/Jericho Feud started a little flat, but on Larry King's show things were a little Different.
Jericho praised Rourke's work, but said that the character in the movie wasn't in a major league, therefore, it wasn't a representation of what Jericho does in the WWE.
He pointed out again the mistake Rourke did mentioning Jericho on the red carpet, and the difference between playing a Wrestler character in a movie, and being a real one.

I believe things are going slowly, as we still have No Way Out on our way to Wrestlemania.
This 'Wrestlemania Extravaganza' can be really huge.

It's good to see Jason Taylor of the Redskins reads Ring Posts . :-)
