Looking ahead to WrestleMania 25

After tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, we’ll probably have a better idea of what some of the big matches at WrestleMania 25 are going to be. It’s always fun to try and predict what’s going to happen, so here are six matches that I think will be on the big show in Houston on April 5:

World heavyweight champion John Cena vs. Randy Orton: Orton wins the Royal Rumble to earn the title shot.

WWE champion Edge vs. Triple H: Edge defeats Jeff Hardy for the title tonight and Triple H wins the Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out. The Triple H-Vickie Guerrero feud continues, with her constantly stacking the deck in Edge’s favor.

Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho: There has been a buzz about Austin returning to the ring at this show, which takes place the night after he is inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. It’s just speculation, but I do think there is a chance of it happening, although I don’t believe the rumors about an Austin-Hulk Hogan match. Jericho has no logical opponent at this point, but he deserves to be involved in a high-profile singles match. No one has a higher profile than Austin. They could play off the fact that Austin was the referee when Jericho lost the world heavyweight title to Batista at Cyber Sunday, as well as the fact that Jericho has repeatedly bragged about the time he beat Austin and The Rock in the same night.

Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy or Christian: Most people think Jeff’s stalker is either his brother Matt or Christian (if he is indeed gone from TNA). Jeff will be seeking revenge at WrestleMania against whoever the stalker turns out to be.

The Undertaker vs. Vladimir Kozlov: It will be The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania against Kozlov’s undefeated streak in WWE. If this match does take place, I have a pretty good idea which streak will be ending.

Shawn Michaels vs. JBL: This match would have to have a stipulation involving money since the story line is based on Michaels having to work for JBL because he is in financial trouble. Here’s an idea: Make it a winner-take-all match. The winner gets his share and his opponent’s share of the sizable WrestleMania payoff. So either Michaels’ money problems would be over and he would be free of JBL, or he would have no choice but to continue working for him.

Have you heard any more rumors eitherway concerning Christian? I miss him - I don't care where I see him so long as I get to see him soon.

Kevin, how could you leave out the money in the bank match. Thats the match i predict Jericho of winning. I cant wait to go to Houston and witness everything live

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I didn't forget about it. I wasn't trying to come up with the whole card, just the matches involving the top stars. I hope Jericho gets a singles match rather than being in Money in the Bank again.

if HHH wins another elimination chamber, i riot

i dont think edge is going to win the belt i think at WM 25 its going to be matt hardy and christian vs jeff hardy and edge

You're right about a JBL / Michaels WM25 match but the stakes will be much, much higher. Michaels will cost Cena the belt tonight putting it squarely around the waist of JBL. But in a second twist, expect Michaels to be a late / surprise entrant in the Rumble eventually winning it all and going on to defeat JBL for the belt @ either No Way Out or WM25.

I pray to God that its not Taker vs Kozlov
I would rather see Taker face Jericho. I don't think these 2 have ever faced each other and Jericho can say that he has been disrespected and try to get it back by beating the Deadman.

That would be the worst card in recent memory.

We saw Cena-Orton last year, with Triple H involved as well. We don't need it again. It's probably going to happen, but that doesn't make it any more appealing.

Edge-Hunter will be sickening, simply because Triple H has been in a major title match at WrestleMania every year since 2000 (with the exception of 2007, when he was injured, and 2001, when he wrestled Undertaker). He needs to do something else. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.

Austin-Jericho could be really fun. They could build it really well, with both of their mic talents. I could see myself ordering the show just for this match (if it takes place). Another possibility could be Austin vs. Randy Orton, which could be just as good.

I would much rather see Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy than Jeff vs. Christian. But I still think my scenario of a four-way with these three and Edge for the WWE title would be much better than either of these scenarios.

Undertaker vs. Kozlov would be a terrible, predictable match. Both guys are in need of mouthpieces (bring back Paul Bearer?), Kozlov in particular. I can't see myself getting excited about this at all.

Michaels-JBL would be the highlight of the buildup (unless it's Jericho-Austin). I hope they don't have Michaels turn on JBL too early, because that could destroy the feud. I like the idea of a winner-take-all match.

Eight guys need to be in the MITB match as well. My predictions: MVP, John Morrison, CM Punk, Shelton Benjamin, The Miz, The Brian Kendrick, Mr. Kennedy, and Ezekiel Jackson. Morrison would then be my pick to win, at which time the Morrison and Miz team would break up.

I agree with you the about Austin-Hogan rumors, Kevin. It's difficult to imagine The Hulkster making a one-night return just to put over Stone Cold.

Reasonable, each and every one, but I haven't heard anything but bad things about Stone Cold's condition. As in he may be one bump away from permanent injury. Otherwise that would be a fantastic match between two of the greatest ever.

P.S. on the subject of Jericho: anyone know why he stopped using "The Walls Of Jericho" aka "the Lion Tamer" properly. It seems like for years now he has been slapping on a plain old Boston Crab and the announcers have to sell it like it's some brutal finisher. I believe he broke out a textbook one on Cena at the end of the RAW in DC last month at the end of the show, but it was a rare sighting. DId he hurt someone?

Excellent observation regarding Stone Cold/Jericho. Adding to your theory, Jericho is one of few guys uninvolved in WrestleMania that could protect Austin in a match.

I hope Austin doesn't wrestle because (A) his body's condition is so questionable, (B) his match with The Rock in 2003 was the perfect end to his career, and (C) we just saw it happen last year with Ric Flair's last match after his HOF induction.

But if it were to happen, then Stone Cold/Jericho is about the only match I would want to see at this point. Good call!

Kevin,
I like the idea of HBK helping JBL to win the title at the Rumble. Then, either by winning the Rumble, or by winning the title shot through the elimination chamber at No Way Out PPV, HBK will reveal that he realized if he became champ again, the money to be made from that would alleviate his financial situation. Thus, he decides he could have his cake and eat it too by taking the belt from JBL and ending his financial predicament in the same fell swoop. :)

J.R. has pretty much said on his blog that he doesn't think Austin will ever wrestle again. I think the days of Austin matches are gone and any ring work he does will not exceed stunner, finger, beer. I think Jericho's way more likely to end up back in MITB this year, although that may not be a bad thing. That match has lacked a real decisive heel since the inaugural match, it could add to the drama.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I read that same blog and I think what JR said was that he would never wrestle Hogan. He left it open as to whether Austin would be wrestling or doing anything at Mania.

The last time I interviewed Austin (when The Codemned came out), he pretty much said that he doubts he will ever wrestle again. But lately there has been talk about it within the industry. Will it happen? We'll have to see.

With the Undertaker only having so much time left, I was hoping for some marquee matchups for him at Wrestlemania.

A match against Kozlov doesn't exactly feel like a marquee match.

Then again, considering that Undertaker has faced a lot of non main event level wrestlers at Wrestlemania, I should be used to it by now.

Kev,
You're mot seeing a Orton vs McMahon Wrestlemania? Maybe with a swerve of Stephanie helping Orton win?

Mickey Rourke just made a comment about having talked to Vince about being in Houston Wrestlemania. He said he may be there and look out Chris Jericho...said live on red carpet tonight

first off im soooooooo happy that randy orton won the royal rumble. i dont know if its true but i heard that the punishment that the mcmahons are going to do to randy is that their going to make him fight for his rumble win against someone...whoever wins the match wins the wrestlemania spot...hopefully thats not true and if it is randy wins because i really really wanted randy to win that spot.

i really hope that jeff hardys stalker is christain because i want christain to come back to the wwe and plus it would be really sad if matt hardy is jeffs stalker. they already had this fued thing and i like them better when they are fighting together not as opponents.

shawn michaels vs jbl well if this match happens with the money stip shawn michaels hopefully wins because it sucks having him be jbls empolyee he really just needs to turn on him and be done with it. and im soooo glad jbl didnt win that championship...john cena deserves to have that championship for a long time.

I cannot see another Cena-Orton match being the main event at WrestleMania (they wrestled so many times against each other in 2007). A friend of mine speculated that it would be perfect for Orton to wrestle Steve Austin in the main event. Vince could be in Austin’s corner (after all, it was the last WrestleMania in Houston where Vince helped Austin win the belt in Stone Cold‘s heel turn). Stephanie will have her heel turn before then. The Legend Killer -- with Stephanie in his corner -- goes after one of the greatest legends. That’s your main event -- without a belt on the line. Jericho could wrestle Shane instead. JBL, HBK and Cena should have a three-way match for the belt. JBL has jobbed so many times in big matches over the past year; it would too obvious having him lose one-on-one to HBK. A three-way match would be a perfect extension for this storyline with an unpredictable outcome.

I got my facts mixed up. J.R. did say on his blog Austin would never wrestle Hogan, but I wasn't going crazy when I said he said Austin would never wrestle again, he made that statement on a Houston radio show according to a Rajah article.

Also, an update on Jericho, Mickey Rourke has confirmed that he is signed for Mania and he took some kayfabe shots at Jericho, so it looks like that might be Y2J's Mania match.

Lastly, I don't know if you noticed this article or not, but the Wrestling Observer released the, "winner," in the worst promotional tactic category. I thought you might be interested as the Jarrett/Angle angle ranked number two. Number one went to the Jeff Hardy OD angle.

They need some BIG, BIG matches for a mania 25 caliber card.

I bet Austin wrestles, Hogan too.

Any chatter about some star-studded battle royal? Or an oldschool gimmick battle royal?

We need more for 25.

Hey Kev

Is there a place in which some of your faithful bloggers can assemble to watch No Way Out or WM 25?

Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels!!! It gotta happen!

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I think it will happen at WrestleMania -- next year.

If WWE has Undertaker/HBK next year, who do you think would win? Also, would it be face/heel, or just the man with the most WrestleMania wins (and matches) against the man with the most WrestleMania moments (and 2nd most matches) in a face-face match?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I think they would both be babyfaces and Undertaker would win.

I think that at wrestlemania 25 y2j the hipercrit perthetic worm of a human being as chris jericho says to the wwe fans should get beaten up and career ended in a 4 on 1 handicap match it should be the team of the rock stone cold steve austin hulk hogan and ric fliar vs chiris jericho
