Women of wrestling make for hot topic
Wrestlingobserver.com ran a poll over the weekend in which it asked fans to vote for “the hottest woman in wrestling/MMA.” Kelly Kelly finished first among the 12 candidates, with Mickie James a close second.
I’m just passing along that information because it might be of interest to some. Personally, I am offended by polls such as this that objectify women. Sure, the women of wrestling refer to themselves as “divas” and knockouts” and they usually don’t wear a whole lot of clothing (a number of them have appeared in magazines with no clothing), but it’s still not right to rank them based on their “hotness.”
I do like making lists, however, and I am certainly an admirer of the many talented female performers who make positive contributions to the wrestling business. There must be a politically correct way to do this. OK, I think I’ve got it. Here’s my top 10 list of “current female performers who most enhance my enjoyment of sports entertainment programs.”
1. Mickie James – Takes spunkiness to a new level
2. Kelly Kelly – So nice they named her twice
3. Velvet Sky – Best ring entrance in the history of the industry
4. Maria – Deserved better than fifth place in ’04 Diva Search won by Christy Hemme
5. Gail Kim – Her matches are always a pleasure to watch
6. Maryse – Wrestling’s version of a Bond girl
7. Tiffany – Crown jewel of Teddy Long’s “new talent initiative” on ECW
8. Lauren – TNA interviewer not a great actress, but still a great asset
9. The Bella Twins – To quote an old Foreigner song, “Fill my eyes with that double vision”
10. Candice Michelle – Super Sundays would be a little less super without her godaddy.com commercials

Comments
Angelina Love is hotter then the Bella Twins.
I'm just sayin.

There is no way your list is complete without Melina. Melina is perhaps the best performer in the business PERIOD. She obviously puts a lot of time into what she does and she can sell it like nobody's business. I would put Mickie at the top of my list with Melina very close behind her. Some of the best women's matches I have seen in the last 5 years have been Mickie v. Melina. Just about every single one of those matches were classics.

My # 1 ( but no where on your list ) : Traci Brooks .
# 1 from a different era , the late Nancy Benoit - "Woman" .
By the way Traci , my name is Jack , I live in Hebron . Thats H-E-B-R.......

C'mon Kev. If you're going to have Velvet Sky you've got to include Angelina Love! I may not be able to touch the Beautiful People but at least I can look. And Maryse moves like a pregnant yak in the ring for crying out loud!

I have to notice much of your reasoning has to do with the wrestler's looks/sex appeal and not her value as a performer. To wit - "Best ring entrance in the history of the industry","To quote an old Foreigner song, "Fill my eyes with that double vision","Crown jewel of Teddy Long's new talent initiative on ECW' (she doesn't even wrestle OR interview, for heaven's sake!), "Super Sundays would be a little less super without her godaddy.com commercials" ('cause we don't get what that's about), etc. How about this list?
1. Beth Phoenix - not only a bruiser and consummate professional in the ring (ref. the Candice Michelle match when Candice screwed up a bump and hurt herself, almost ruining the match) but a solid actress (ref. her work as Santino's foil) and her own work in developing her character (because the writers don't give her much to work with).
2. Mickie James - a charismatic and enthusiastic worker, who always gives a solid performance in ring and commits to the crappy storylines they give her.
3. Gail Kim - I'll agree with you here, but would put her higher
4. Katie Lea - criminally underused and needs, NEEDS to be in a long-term feud with Mickie James because they're matches are stupendous
5. Angelina Love - better worker than her counterpart and her oversexed, porn star character hilariously illustrates the ridiculousness of sexually-based characterizations (made me hate her, too, which is difficult)
6. ODB - she's ODB! Need I say more? Incredibly entertaining and solid in the ring.
7. Roxxi - her new character choices aside (I really preferred the Voodoo Queen), she brings so much to the table
8. Awesome Kong and gang - I just keep watching to see if they can find somebody to stand up to her. She can still make me make the "Oh, that's gotta hurt!" sound almost every week.
9. Maryse - I'll give you that one too, I really enjoy her cockiness and constant ring posturing.
10. Victoria - I would put Natalya here too, but she makes it at 11. I give Victoria props for taking all the undeserved burying crap and underuse of her talent she's had to endure. She commits, she's strong, she's intimidating, and I am a genuine widow's peak freak.
Sorry it's so long, but I just think that until people start appreciating women wrestlers for their work first, and not their looks, women's wrestling can never move forward and evolve.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: You are right about the criteria for the list. I was trying to have a little fun and basically do a hottest woman list without calling it a hottest woman lost.
I will do another list soon that focuses on the women's wrestling ability.

Where's Melina? No way does Velvet Sky have a better ring entrance than Melina. She's also not as good as Melina in the ring or on the mic. What's not to enjoy?

Off topic: Sun Times wrestling blogger says Tomko is about to join Edge in an angle and Christian is soon to follow so it appears that TNA was not swerving us.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I believe Tomko has already signed. As for Christian, I now think he's probably coming to WWE, but you never know when TNA is working one of those angles where they even try to swerve people in the company.
Posted by: eric | December 1, 2008 3:39 PM
What about Natalya? she has more wrestling talent than the bikini models that WWE calls Divas. They aren't wrestlers, in her prime Moola would have snapped them like twigs. All most of them are are in wrestling for is the titillation factor.

Come on Eck.....
No Melina?! For my money, she's hotter than anyone on your list. I can understand her not being any certain person's number one or two or what have you. But not even in the top ten? Check out her summer skin photos, for heaven's sake!

BELLA TWINS!

Not sure Maryse is quite Bond girl material yet. She still needs a little more work.
Velvet Skye...maybe.

As a long time wrestling fan, I've never been into the women's division. It is better now than it was - I used to really hate the Bra and panties matches, the jelly fights and all of that garbage. I'm all for attractive women, but I guess I have some taste as well. It is good that at least the matches are improving from being sleazy moves and G'strings to actual athletic displays. (most of the time)
My personal opinion is that they should have a women's division on Raw and Smackdown, but as sexist as it sounds (and I really don't mean to be sexist at all), I feel like I've wasted some money when I buy a PPV and all that time is taken up by the women, with guys like MVP, Brian Kendrick, Kofi Kingston and many others often left off the card.
Posted by: Rob | December 1, 2008 11:48 PM
Okay, I fully accept that and I didn't mean to come off like a militant fem-libber (although I'm well aware that's what I often sound like). I misconstrued the list as a result of the discussion before it of the objectification of women. If we're going for looks, I'll give you five (and being a woman myself, it'll give you unique insight :-)
1. Mickie James - she has a natural, athletic look that isn't intimidating or off-putting - besides, she has a beautiful smile.
2. Beth Phoenix - she looks like a total bada**! I want to be her when I grow up ... seriously, I do.
3. Maryse - I may not usually go for the sex kitten, but seeing as she's a heel and has the whole sultry thing down to a fine art ... she does it for me.
4. Stephanie McMahon - okay, I know, not technically a diva, but she's still very beautiful and I love the womanly, motherly but still tough businesswoman with glasses look.
5. Victoria - off the beaten path, but I love her torso area and constantly changing hair.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I can see where you were confused. I was going for sarcasm with the "objectification of women" line. While I really don't like it (especially with having a young daughter), I figured in a cosmetic business such as wrestling, men and women both are judged heavily on their look.

Kevin, RAW last night had to be one of the worse shows ever. 1st: the wrestling was awful and the rey incident put he whole night out of sinc. 2nd come on doesn't RAW have there own talent to go for the IC Title, what about Knox, MVP insted of miz and morrison. 3rd HBK and JBL was really bad, man HBK just needs to retire and do comedy with HHH. The ending was bad no suspense hell I bet everyone knew what was going to happen after Cena's match. The whole show was too predictable, even before the matches u knew who was going to win. 4th: Steph is going to run RAW she needs to step up a lot better or it will be run into the ground. I am not a weekend fan, been following wresting all my life, but last night was just a horrible show.

Kelly Kelly has to be one of the stupidest names in wrestling history.
Posted by: Chris Slater | December 2, 2008 11:00 AM
After watching Melina sit in that split position for several minutes making eyes at Beth and Santino last night, I am not sure I have ever been more turned on watching the WWE before. Melina is certainly top 3 sexiest and/or best female wrestler. Take your pick. I don't care.
Sexiest
1. Velvet Sky
2. Melina
3. Mickie
Best
1. Mickie
2. Melina
3. Katie Lea
RESPONSE: Woa, Lee, that's a little too much info there in the first sentence.
Posted by: Lee | December 2, 2008 11:28 AM
So, let's do a hottest men in wrestling list. I can totally get down with that. I'm just sayin ... :-)
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Hey, we here at Ring Posts are equality opportunity offenders. By all means, for anyone who is so inclined, feel free to send in you hottest men list (somehow I get the feeling that John Cena and Jeff Hardy are going to do very well).
Posted by: Micah | December 2, 2008 12:19 PM
After seeing the ECW taping in person last night, I think Tiffany needs to vault up to #1 or #2...being a Mickie James fanboy, that is tought for me to say, but wow.

Some of us still think one of the original divas is still the best -- SUNNY!!!

Micah ,
"Kevin" would start the list with Shawn Michaels considering the man crush he has on him . .. not that there's anything wrong with that .
Just kidding Kev . I'll fess up the the man crush on the "Booty Daddy".
Posted by: the artist formerly known as jack in hebron | December 2, 2008 7:47 PM
Well, in the spirit of equality -
1. Chris Jericho - in trunks or tights, with long hair and a goofy ponytail, smirking or grinning, he is the world's hottest man. Points if you get this: "In honor of this occasion, I wrote a little poem. We came from Japan, and now we're back. We're gonna have a jam .... and, now we're back."
2. Mr. Kennedy - to paraphrase something I recently read, "so nice he says his name twice."
3. Randy Orton - I have no words ... only drool.
4. Kevin Nash - Big Sexy Tour 2008? SOLD OUT!
5. John Cena - he may be a Marky Mark look-a-like, but he's still so fine...
6. Matt Hardy - The man who will never say die should never put a shirt on.
7. Edge - He'd be up farther, but the mountain man look is making me want to run for the hills.
8. Alex Shelley - any man who can make a turkey suit look good looks good to me.
9. Christian Cage - what can I say? He's the instant classic.
10. John Morrison - every time he puts rhinestones in his abs, I cry laughing. The rest of the time, I just want to pet him.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Points: Has to be a Fozzy reference.
Posted by: Micah | December 2, 2008 9:19 PM
Specifically, the video for "Eat the Rich." I should take off points for generality because the Japan line made it a gimme, but I won't (Moongoose McQueen would be so mad at me)!
BTW, Jack, (or he who used to be known as Jack), if ya'll get unashamed man crushes, then I get the unashamed Beth Phoenix crush. And I challenge all males to post a hottest men in wrestling list. Laughing is good for your health.

"Woa, Lee, that's a little too much info there in the first sentence."
You know I am not normally one to push hard...ERRRR...advocate gratuitous T&A, but as long as its out there...ERRRR...if its going to be there anyway, I might was well enjoy it.

Here’s my [real] list of hottest women in sports entertainment, in no particular order. (Hopefully I’m not banned from Ring Posts for life because of my earlier post. :) )
Layla L. - Curly or straight hair, it doesn’t matter.
Maria - Natural beauty.
Trish Stratus - Best worker.
Lita - Wrestled better than most men.
Krystal Marshall - I have no idea why they fired her.
Jillian Hall - Come on, her singing isn’t that bad…
Lillian Garcia - Best looking ring announcer in any sport.
The Bella Twins ( Does that count as one or two?)
Melina - I’m still partly deaf from her shrieking at the 2005 Smackdown taping at 1st Mariner, but it was a worthwhile sacrifice.
Candice Michelle - Has more plastic in her than Santa’s workshop.
Gail Kim - Finally coming back from her “Florida vacation”.
Beth Phoenix - I don’t care that she can probably bench press more than I can.
Maryse - With my French-Canadian heritage, she could be a long lost relative…. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Traci Brooks - There’s my shout out to Jack in Hebron. Holla if ya hear me!
Angelina Love…
…and Velvet Sky - They’re kind of trashy (complete with tramp stamps), but I grew up in Baltimore, so I kinda dig that.
Posted by: Sean | December 4, 2008 12:47 PM
Sean ,
Finally , someone with good taste and intelligence . Your description of Angelina Love and Velvet Sky would work for Traci B. too . Now that's what I'm talkin 'bout . (kinda like my ex-wife)
I think Kev would give Duane Gill a run for that #6 spot though .

"After seeing the ECW taping in person last night, I think Tiffany needs to vault up to #1 or #2..."
On TV, she looked great walking to the ring until Teddy Long stepped in front of her ... ARGH!
Just swearin'.

I want to accept Micah's challenge while this subject is still somewhat active. I am not basing this Top 10 directly on personal preference, but rather my perception and observations* on what I think average female viewers would say is their top 10 hottest men in WWE and TNA...
1. John Cena
2. Randy Orton
3. Jeff Hardy
4. Batista
5. AJ Styles
6. Edge
7. John Morrison
8. Matt Hardy
9. Shawn Michaels
10. CM Punk
* - "Perception" refers to the "high-pitched" fan response to specific wrestlers, and "observations" were based on the attractiveness of girls at live shows wearing merchandise for specific wrestlers.

Am I the only one who thinks Kelly Kelly is not as hot as everyone like to make out? sure she has blonde hair and a nice rack but that is about it, Maria is just a godess and with Brianna and Nicole Bella in there too I do not see how anyone could prefer Kelly Kelly.
