News and views on Foley/Sports Illustrated, Christian, Maryse
Here’s my take on some recent wrestling headlines:
THE MICK FOLEY/SPORTS ILLUSTRATED CONTROVERSY: I finally got around to reading Sports Illustrated’s review of The Wrestler (written by Adam Duerson in the Dec. 22 edition) and Mick Foley’s response to it. For those who might have missed this story, Duerson sat next to Foley during a media screening of the movie, and he draws parallels in his review between Foley and the lead character – an aging, down-on-his-luck former wrestling star played by Mickey Rourke. Foley is described in Duerson’s opening paragraph as a “homeless-looking fellow ... with a crude Grizzly Adams haircut and lugging an oversized duffel bag.” He goes on to paint a less-than-flattering – and, more importantly, inaccurate – portrait of Foley. Needless to say, Foley wasn’t pleased, and he articulately expressed his feelings in a column on tnawrestling.com.
I don’t believe there was any malice on Duerson’s part, but I do think he was lazy or unbelievably uninformed. It looks to me as if Duerson needed a hook for his story, and he believed he found an obvious one in Foley. The problem is that Foley might look the part of a broken-down wrestler who is estranged from his family and wrestles in high school gyms because he’s desperate for money, but – as just about every wrestling fan knows – nothing could be further from the truth. Oh well, you know what they say about the truth getting in the way of a good movie review. When Foley called Duerson to voice his disappointment with the review, Duerson blamed it on his editor making changes. That’s extremely weak. If my byline is on a story and an editor makes changes that I strongly disagree with, I have the right to have my name removed from it. Duerson’s name is on his piece. I wonder if he assumed the “homeless-looking” Foley would be too busy pounding the pavement for his next low-paying gig to actually read the review.
CHRISTIAN’S POTENTIAL WWE ROLE: Christian Cage appears WWE-bound and is expected to be revealed as the person who attacked Jeff Hardy before the Survivor Series, according to a report on prowrestling.net. I won’t be surprised if Cage signs with WWE, but I will be surprised – and disappointed – if he is revealed as the mystery man and not Matt Hardy. I just don’t find a Jeff Hardy-Christian feud nearly as compelling as a battle of the Hardys. There have been subtle hints of a Hardy boys feud on television, so if this report is accurate, either Matt Hardy was a red herring all along, or there was a change in plans. Until I see Christian with a smoking gun (and I’m not talking about Cute Kip), however, I’m not giving up on the Matt versus Jeff angle.
MARYSE INJURED: WWE’s Web site confirmed reports that the newly crowned WWE divas champion suffered a dislocated kneecap during a house show match last night in Raleigh, N.C. There is no word as to how long she will be out of action or whether she will be stripped of the title. The timing of the injury couldn’t have been worse for Maryse, who was only a week into her reign and has been showing gradual improvement in the ring. With Michelle McCool and Maria beginning a program together, I wonder if WWE was planning to debut Gail Kim – who has been backstage at recent tapings – as Maryse’s first challenger. While Maryse is nowhere close to Kim when it comes to in-ring ability, she does have good heel presence and would make a perfect antagonist for Kim.

Comments
Maybe this mysterious-assault storyline can unfold to everyone's satisfaction, Kevin. Christian could be revealed as the attacker, but later, it could turn out that he was paid by Matt.
I wouldn't be suprised to learn that the plan did change. WWE may have thought that Matt was too obvious as the attacker.

I don't know kev... i do not think that he will resign with the WWE
he should but he probably won't
What makes you think that he is WWE bound did you read it on a website or somethng ???
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: You must have read over this part:
"according to a report on prowrestling.net"

I really hope Maryse will be ok in the long run. But the short term prognosis seems like a new champion will have to be crowned. Seems like it might be Gail Kim unless they put the belt back to Michelle McCool and let Maria try to take it from her which I doubt all though I wouldn't mind seeing Maria as the champ even for a little while. I doubt if the WWE even cares about the women's division all that much so it doesnt matter who gets the belt. All though I dont really know the severity of her injury. I hear it's a dislocated kneecap. Kevin can you elaborate in her injury if possible.

I agree that it'll be disappointing if Christian turns out to be the assailant. In fact I'm questioning the wisdom of having him on SmackDown. Sure he'd get to reunite with Edge, but I can't see Christian in the main event picture due to the logjam of HHH, Undertaker, Big Show, Hardy, Koslov, etc.
Christian would fit better at RAW, where he can feud against Jericho and Orton as a face or rekindle his rivalry with Cena as a heel.

That really sucks about Maryse. Her title win was cool and there was a lot of potential for her. Hopefully this is a situation where she can rehab it and not miss a lot of ring time. I'd hate to see her get this push taken away from her.
The Mick Foley thing is crap. I'm in the fifth year of getting my four-year journalism degree (general studies suck lol) and I've done freelance stuff with my local paper, and I would never do something like that. I could understand if it were some wrestler from years back that nobody remembered anymore, but it's Mick Foley we're talking about! I thought his reply was great.

I feel so sorry for Maryse, you can tell she was putting in the hard work and it was finaly paying off, she got the push she deserved, she is the best heel diva on smackdown. I hope she is okay and can return soon
And I agree with you completetly about Christian, he is a great wrestler I cant wait to return, but a hardy's feud would be amazing, it has the potential to be bigger than Jericho vs Michaels, could be the best rivalary since the attitude era. Kevin don't you think an Edge vs Christian feud would be a better way to use him? I hope christian wins the Royal rumble
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I do think Edge vs. Christian would be better than Edge and Christian being aligned.

This might be a stupid question but, why doesn't someone just ask Jeff Hardy who attacked him?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: He was attacked from behind and didn't see who it was.

Regarding Mick Foley: As long as professional wrestling is regarded as "low culture" in the hierarchy of sports, wrestlers will not be given a fair shake in the media (Mr. Kevin Eck excepted). Because wrestling matches are predetermined in their outcomes, focus on personalities and acting, wrestling matches and wrestlers will always be suspect in the media's eyes.

I would be very interested in seeing if WWE doesn't bring back Christian as an opponant for Edge. For some reason, I see Christian as a face coming back, kind of stealing Y2J's old shtick. My thoughts on Maryse...its no big thing. They give her a few weeks off to recover and she is back after the feud between Maria and Michelle McCool clears up. WWE never gives the women's division more than one real storyline at a time to work with anyway.

Is it just me but what exactly did Jeff Hardy lose by being attacked at Survivor Series? At the next PPV he became WWE champion so it's not as if it affected him greatly is it? To me that's why Matt Hardy would make a better assailant than Edge, Christian or HHH. The fact it was his brother that did it would make much more impact than anyone else. Please let it be Matt, unless they come up with a really good angle for someone else. And I mean REALLY GOOD!
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: My thoughts exactly. The angle that makes the most sense is Matt being the assailant. It plays into Matt's inferiority complex that he prevented his brother from winning the title at one PPV, only to have Jeff win it at the next one.

Christian should return to raw so he can feud wth jericho, randy orton, mysterio ect where he would fit in more. But should return as the shock royal rumble contestent and win and challenge Edge for his title that would be great. And Edge would have the championship as Matt would have interfered to make Jeff lose it, that would be great!
I hope Hardy getsanother push once he loses his title though
And get well soon Maryse!

Maryse shouldn't have to drop the title. she can keep it at least a month. I dislocated my knee cap and it took me about 3-6 weeks. By 3 though I was back to a regular workout routine but not sports. They can do a tournament or something or put more focus on the McCool/Maria feud

This "Who Attacked Jeff Hardy?" mystery will lose its impact the longer WWE delays its answer -- unless there's a subsequent attack before the Royal Rumble or later.
I fully agree Matt Hardy would be the best choice right now, but the longer WWE delays it, the harder it would be to buy into since Matt would have attacked Jeff one night, then acted supportive for 2 months, if not 3 or more, before being discovered.
I don't think WWE will reach this angle's full potential, which makes me wonder if the Survivor Series "attack" wasn't just a lame publicity stunt in the first place with no real plan behind it.

Well acording to a little website called wikipedia the attack on christian was and hoax and a ploy and it was just to make him seem inactive and everyone is falling for it .........the chances that he will be going back to the wwe is like one in a zillion......

Here's how I'd book it (assuming Christian is the attacker):
Edge vs. Jeff Hardy at the Royal Rumble. Edge regains the WWE title thanks to Christian's interference. Matt Hardy wins the Royal Rumble (after dropping the ECW belt to Jack Swagger) and announces that he will challenge Edge at WrestleMania. Jeff is booked for a match with Christian at WrestleMania, but invokes his rematch clause at No Way Out, and wins, to regain the title. We then get an odd booking situation. Jeff must face Christian at Mania, but Matt Hardy and Edge must be in a match for the WWE title. So we get a fatal four-way match at WrestleMania. The last time WrestleMania was in Houston, these four (plus the Dudley Boys) were in a TLC match, so it only makes sense for this to be a TLC match as well. While it is technically a four-way match, it begins essentially as a tag team ladder match, as E&C will not fight each other, nor will the Hardys. Then, after simultaneous Twists of Fate on Edge and Christian, perhaps off ladders or through tables, it comes down to Matt and Jeff. Matt tells his brother to go ahead and climb the ladder to win the title, and when Jeff turns his back, Matt hits him with a chair, climbs the ladder, and grabs the title. Then we get Kevin's Hardy Boys feud, which everyone agrees will be great.

Whilst the SI article was pretty poor, inaccurate and sloppy, i can't help thinking that Mick overreacted, possibly because for all the inaccuracies in the story, there were some aspects that came too close to the bone for Mick.
Foley is an intelligent, articulate guy, and i think he truly wanted to go out right after 'Beyond The Mat', but for whatever reason he's hung around, and i think he feels some guilt about that.
As for Christian, i'm shattered that's he's likely gone from TNA.
I understand why he's made the change, the money is too good to pass up when you're in your early 30's and looking at being able to produce another 5-6 years of top quality work, but i hope he's had a look at his debut promo in TNA and goes in with both eyes open.
I don't want to see Christian waste away like he did for years during his previous WWE stint, so hopefully his run in TNA has convinced Vince he's a true star who deserves a push.
Hopefully when he turns 40, Christian can look back at not only a heap of coin, but also a career fulfilled.

Speaking of Sports Illustrated, this week's issue has a retrospective on Killer Kowalski. Who is that down on the mat, Johhny Valentine or 'Nature Boy' Buddy Rogers?
Staying with nostalgia, you can catch on You Tube the 1984 wedding of 'Butcher' Paul Vachon on Tuesday Night Titans. How Howard Finkel kept a straight face during this 'ceremony' is beyond me.What a cast of characters including Dr. 'D' David Shultz wreaking havoc.

Hmmm. I had heard Christian's profile was taken down from the TNA site, but as of now it's up there. I also heard Karen Angle's was taken down when she was released, but it's there also.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I don't know if Christian's was ever taken down, but Karen's was definitely removed and then put back up.

When Maryse comes back I would love to see her align with Morrison and Miz. I think their combined attitudes and egos would be unmatched. All they would need is a muscled up big guy (along the lines of Ezekiel) and they would have the makings of a nice stable.

Are you sure that Matt Hardy turning against Jeff is going to be a money angle, Kevin? Matt is pretty over with the fans, so they (including me) may not be into it. When Owen Hart turned against Bret, his WWE career was nondescript. The fans had no investment in him, so his first appearance on the radar screen was that of an ingrate. It's different with the Hardys
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I think a heel turn means more when the guy turning is over as a face.

Anonomyous person who put that you could get info from wikipedia is right and ona list of wwe superstars it says unassigned superstar and it say's nothing about christian so i personaly think that everyone is getting their hopes up for nothing this is just what i think....

I think the WWE will have no choice (despite the McMahons history of defiance) when Maryse comes back. There's no doubt she's slowly moved up the ladder to being one of the most beloved divas of all time - the McJerks will test Maryse to see if she can adjust her game to that of a face. If not, they'll never give her a title again! Sorry thats how they work. It will be a good day when Maryse comes back - heel or face... (btw, I thought i was a smart mark in realizing how good maryse was, now i realize she has carved out a huge following around the world)
