More foreshadowing of Hardys feud on Smackdown
The most significant moment during last night’s episode of Smackdown occurred on the entrance ramp just after Jeff Hardy’s countout victory over The Big Show.
As Jeff was taking his bows, Matt Hardy suddenly appeared on the ramp to celebrate with his brother. Matt got so excited that he grabbed Jeff’s arm and raised it in a symbol of victory. Jeff, however, was selling an injury to the arm, and he immediately jerked it away, grimacing.
I believe it’s another hint that the Hardy boys are going to end up feuding. Even if the arm-raising incident was an ad-lib, just the fact that Matt came out to celebrate – and was so giddy about it – is a clue in and of itself. I mean, who gets that worked up about a countout win in a non-title match? It’s also interesting that no mention was made this week about the mysterious attack on Jeff before the Survivor Series.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
With Michelle McCool’s attack on Maria, WWE finally pulled the trigger on McCool’s heel turn. At least I think that’s what happened. The way this story line has gone, McCool and Maria might be hanging out like old friends next week. In fact, they were doing exactly that last night before McCool’s title defense against Maryse (which was refereed by Maria). McCool told Maria that they “have had some issues, but that’s what girlfriends do.” Really? Kicking your friend hard in the stomach is what friends do? I guess I really don’t understand women. …
Maryse, who is from Montreal, got a nice pop from the crowd in Toronto when she won the divas title from McCool. Her victory was a nice surprise. By the way, with all due respect to Charles Robinson, Maria gets my vote for Referee of the Year. …
The Shelton Benjamin-Hurricane Helms U.S. title match was good, although Helms’ timing still seems to be just a little off. Both the champion and the challenger came out of this one looking good, as Helms was on offense for much of the match and nearly won, while Benjamin managed to turn back a strong challenge and win cleanly. …
Tazz said that “Triple H is the measuring stick in WWE.” Shouldn’t the champion be considered the measuring stick? When a guy is pushed as being the best with or without the title, it devalues the title and the current champion…
I can’t blame Vladimir Kozlov for not accepting Triple H’s challenge to “settle it” while Triple H was holding a sledgehammer. …
I might be in the minority, but I am looking forward to seeing what Kizarny can do in the ring. With that being said, I still didn’t need to see the same vignette twice. …
A “You screwed Bret” sign in the crowd was visible during the show. At this point, you might as well being holding up a sign that says “I need to get a life.”

I love Maryse but as a champion she has a way to go. She will never get anyone to forget about Trish Stratus. Maria and Michelle McCool is headed for a feud. You don't treat your friend by kicking her all over ringside. I thought the Shelton/Helms match was pretty good but as you said Helms was off on some of his moves. MVP isn't doing anything for me as he lost again. Having Mr. Kennedy coming out after every match is making a storyline that I would like to see. Triple H and Kozlov will be a battle of the Heavyweights. Don't know what is going to happen with Edge if the Hardys end up feuding. Hopefully Christian will be coming in soon to do something with Edge.
Kevin, if the Hardys do end up against each other, do you think their feud will be similiar to that of Bret and Owen Hart that ended up in a steel cage?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Undertaker has no one to feud with at the moment.

Yup, I noticed Helms seemed to be a little off on spots too.
Hardy should have went over Big Show clean to solidify himself as champ. The loss would not have hurt Show.
I agree the using HHH as the measuring rod is a diservice to the champ. Best thing to do is use Hardy a the measuring rod under the pretense that "he never gives up and over comes the odds", thats what could be used to set him apart from the rest as the champ.
Lastly, I think I'm going to go as low as pull the "race card" if the MVP losses continue!

I didn't understand the end of the Diva's title match. Was McCool complaining beacause Maria didn't count fast enough WHEN WAS MCCOOL THE ONE BEING PINNED?
I didn't get that. Maybe because I'm from Argentina. Or maybe it was too scripted and Michelle wasn't paying attention at what was actually happening in the ring.
The Hardys will be feuding and now Edge is starting to have (new) reasons to split up with Vickie.
HHH opened the show and he is not champion. I know most people will say "that's so HHH. that's big nose cocky Hunter". But I think this shows how not ready is hardy to be in front of the crowd and do a decent mic performance.
The pretaped promo confirmed that.
For the sake of his title reign, He better find a way to improve this. Because he can't skip live promos doing pretaped ones for the rest of his life.
That's probably the difference between a good mid carder and a top champion.
Last friday, HHH bring Eddie Guerrero up to the table. And the way they use his name is the difference today between TNA and WWE. HHH use it as a way to provoke Chavo, praising guerrero. And the people started to chant "eddie, eddie!". And you can be against this, but you can't say it was not brought in a classy way.
And Angle, on the other hand...is in TNA.

As McCool was beating the stuffing out of Maria, Jim Ross called the assault "absolutely unsportsmanlike." Yeah, it ranks up there with not shaking hands after the game. But in fairness, if I were describing a wrestling beatdown for the millionth time, I would be searching for things to say, too. And yes, Maria filled out the referee shirt nicely.
The Benjamin-Helms match was very good, but where can the program go from here? Benjamin kicked out of A Nightmare on Helms' Street and The Shining Wizard. That would be fine if the match had been a feud-ending showdown on pay-per-view, but the Helms came away looking like he doesn't have enough firepower to put away Benjamin. It's one thing to lose cleanly; it's another thing to empty your bag of tricks and still lose cleanly.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: You make a good point about Helms. I was surprised when he hit the Shining Wizard and Benjamin kicked out. Pethaps Helms is going to debut a new finisher.

Why are they making such a big deal over who attacked Jeff Hardy at Survivor Series?
He already won the title since then, who the hell cares who attacked him?

Come on Kevin. Michelle was trying to manipulate Maria. She was trying to act all friendly so Maria would call it Michelle's way.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I get that McCool was trying tio manipulate her (first by acting friendly, then by intimidating her). What I didn't like was Maria hugging McCool when she first approached her. With McCool acting like a heel every other week, shouldn't Maria be suspicious of her?

Pending Hardy's feud as easy to spot as the Andre turn in the 80's on Piper's Pit. If we could only get Lita back involved!

The Helms/Benjamin match was great. I guess Helms has replaced R-Truth as the heir apparent to the US title. Speaking of, any word on why R-Truth was denied entry at the Canadien border?
I like Kizarny's look and am intrigued with seeing him in the ring. I am just tired of the stupid promos in "karny." The problem is that he's not "great" at speaking in karny, but his gimmick is that he speaks that all the time.
Jake "the Snake" Roberts noted in a MySpace blog that he knows Kizarny and that he's a good wrestler. But, Jake also wrote in a blog that CM Punk could learn something from watching The Boogeyman. So, I don't know about Jake...
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: The Canadian border deal was most likely due to the fact that Killings has a criminal record, according to The Wrestling Observer.

I'm psyched to see Kizarny work. WWE needs new blood and I'm definitely hoping he will succeed. But those vignettes have been awful and and they need to stop. God help the guy if Vince glues him to that foolish carny-talk.

hey man good blogs i enjoy reading them.
anyway your points are well straight to the point, which makes a good read.

I'm no attorney but and don't know the rules with people with criminal records leaving the U.S. But why would R-Truth be denied access to Canada but allow to travel to Iraq for the Tribute to the Troops show?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Any attorneys out there?
Posted by: Jamaka | December 28, 2008 11:55 AM
Correct me if I am wrong, but does MVP not have a criminal record? It is strange that Killings was denied entry while MVP was allowed in.
As or the Tribute to the Troops question, I am not an attorney, but the WWE personnel do not enter the Iraqi country at large, do they? They are providing a service on U.S. military installations. That may be the difference.
Posted by: Christopher | December 28, 2008 6:58 PM
I'm no attorney either, but I guess it would be the incoming country's decision. Whoever makes the decision in Canada decided that R-Truth can't come in. While, whoever made the decision in Iraq allowed him in.
At TNA's Canadian pay per view, Glen Gilberti wasn't allowed access to the country either, due to his legal record.
I figure this has to just be a Canadian thing. I doubt Truth would be denied access to Mexico or something like that.

it couldnt be r turth record because they let MVP in and he was in jail for 9 and a half years for armed robbery and kidnapping so that wouldnt have bin it

Could it be that Matt Hardy may win the Royal Rumble and then Challenge Jeff at WM. I could see that happening and playing face vs. face until after No Way Out and then turning heel.

I was at the show in Toronto, the dark match before smackdown was Kizarny vs. Hawkins or Ryder. Anyway it was not a good match at all, the Toronto crowed can be kinda rough sometimes and loud "boring" chants started about 2 minutes into the match. Also I have never heard Shawn Michaels booed like he was that night, there were tons of "you screwed bret chants." The biggest face pop of the night was for Jericho followed closely by Orton. Jericho's match against punk was by far the match of the night. After Raw went of the air Jericho wrestled Cena in the dark match. Before the match Jericho cut a heel promo that have worked in any other place except Toronto. Toronto is a different crowed we seem to boo most babyfaces and cheer the heels. A lot of this probably has to do with how lame most of the faces are right now, they are all geared towards kids and just aren't very interesting. I was surprised and disappointed that Edge didn't at least come to the ring in his home town, but it makes sense because he would have received a huge ovation and we all know nobody is allowed to get a bigger pop than Triple H.

Both the champion and the challenger came out of this one looking good, as Helms was on offense for much of the match and nearly won, while Benjamin managed to turn back a strong challenge and win cleanly...
My one quibble with this match was that Benjamin scored some very early hits on the back of Helms' neck, when Helms should've been doing everything possible to avoid that kind of damage. It kind of undercut the psychology of him selling it like death when Benjamin went back to his neck during his heel comeback.
A “You screwed Bret” sign in the crowd was visible during the show. At this point, you might as well being holding up a sign that says “I need to get a life.”
As absurd as it may be that a fan would hold up that sign during a show where Shawn Michaels was nowhere to be found, I find it interesting that you noticed it and felt the need to comment. Personally, I think no fan should allow the Screwjob to be forgotten, so long as there is anyone involved who is okay with what he did that night.
