Jeff Hardy mystery coming into focus on Smackdown

After watching last night’s episode of Smackdown, I am convinced that Matt Hardy will be revealed as the person responsible for attacking Jeff Hardy last month.

Before last night’s show, I had noticed a few things that seemed to subtlety suggest Matt Hardy might be the culprit. When he was first interviewed about his brother being attacked, he said (and I’m paraphrasing) that “people think Jeff is a screw-up, and maybe he is.” Matt also seemed to be clapping for his brother in an exaggerated manner (perhaps to the point of being disingenuous) when he presented him with his Slammy award Monday on Raw.

Matt’s appearance on “The Cutting Edge” last night clinched it for me. Matt being so certain that Edge was behind the attack likely means it’s not Edge. And Edge pointing the finger at Triple H likely means it’s not Triple H. It reminded me of a story line from several years ago when Shawn Michaels was attacked and his best friend Triple H made it his mission to find out who did it. It turned out to be Triple H himself.

When Edge told Matt last night that the reason he was involving himself in his brother’s business is because it’s the only way he can be relevant, he basically revealed Matt’s motive for the attack. Edge said that if Matt had been attacked instead of Jeff, no one would even care. Matt’s facial expression showed that he didn’t necessarily disagree with Edge’s statement. Edge’s dialogue was written that way for a reason, and I doubt it’s to start another feud between him and Matt.

Then again, as someone who has wanted to see a feud between the Hardy Boyz for a while, it may just be wishful thinking. But my instinct tells me that we are in store for a brother vs. brother angle.

Other thoughts on last night’s show:

Triple H coming down the ramp and getting jumped by Jeff Hardy as soon as the show went on the air was a great way to kick things off. You can’t do stuff like that every week because it then becomes a cliche, but it definitely grabs the viewer’s attention when used on occasion. ...

Triple H and Jeff Hardy had yet another good match together, and this one ended the only way it really could have on the go-home show for tomorrow’s Armageddon pay-per-view – with Edge interfering and causing a double disqualification. ...

I hate to sound like a broken record, but those humorous DX Christmas commercials really seem out of place since Triple H and Michaels are both involved in serious, intense angles. ...

WWE has succeeded in getting me to stop caring about MVP. Wake me up if/when this losing streak gimmick has a payoff. The best thing about MVP’s match was R-Truth’s entrance. ...

Is the creative team playing a rib on Mr. Kennedy by providing him with such lame material? ...

The unnamed newcomer in that strange vignette was a British wrestler named Hade Vansen, who had been wrestling in Florida under a WWE developmental deal. Judging by his dark character, I assume he will be in line for a feud with The Undertaker. ...

It looks as if Hurricane Helms still has a little ring rust, as his cross-body block off the top onto Shelton Benjamin was a little sloppy. Speaking of Helms, the smart-aleck personality that he projected in the pop-up segments isn’t really coming across in the ring. Suggestion: Have him cut a quick, funny promo on his opponent before every match and end it with his tag line of “I’m just sayin.’ ” ...

The finish to the women’s tag match was unrealistic (Natalya had one Bella twin in position for a slam, but the other twin dropkicked her sister, who came crashing down on Natalya). There’s no way Natalya would have been hurt enough to stay down for a three count, and it looked even worse because the referee was distracted for a few seconds before he saw the pin attempt.

I'm going to disagree with you about Matt Hardy being the culprit. Let me give a few reasons why:
1. I can't think of a single time a title-holder has done a heel-turn with the belt. Granted, my wrestling knowledge isn't as profound as yours, but I still think a champion heel-turn would be unprecedented.
2. I know the ECW title isn't highly regarded right now, but were Hardy to turn heel with the belt, there really isn't a viable babyface on the ECW roster to contend for the title (Finlay? doubtful). The match with Kozlov this Sunday is non-title, so he's not losing it there. I just don't think the WWE would flip Matt until he loses the title.
3. I'm putting my money on a Jeff Hardy Wrestlemania. Three possible scenarios: wins Rumble, wins Elimination chamber, or wins MITB and cashes it in against Triple H later that night. Either way, they'll want Matt in the ring with him to celebrate the moment (the Hardy's embracing will make a great ad for the DVD sale). They can't do that if Matt attacked Jeff four months prior.

My bet for the attacker: Christian.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Randy Savage was WWF champion when he turned on Hogan. Ric Flair was WCW champ when he turned on Sting in 1990. Those two immediately come to mind, but there are probably others.

Couldn't agree with you more Kevin. The whole show, minus the MVP match was very entertaining. While I am very anxious for a brother vs. brother program, I would really like to see a Hardy (either one) vs. Edge program. Have you heard anymore on Christian's supposed return?

I thought the DX Christmas thing was pretty funny, especially when Triple H said how you can push the button on the back of the HBK bear and its hair falls out. Of course, I enjoy anything that includes Michaels.

I had the exact same thinking while watching the Divas match. I think the thinking behind it is, "it's a divas match, who cares? Look, puppies!" I just don't think the WWE Divas, especially the Smackdown ones, have enough backstage support. Their division isn't treated with a lot of seriousness. I mean, when was the last time you saw them run an angle in that division that wasn't, "I'm so mad you got more cheers from me in the bikini contest?"

I thought Helms was going to retain a bit of his heel personality when he returned, even if he did act more like a tweener, kind of like how Chavo was acting for a while when the Cruiserweight Championship was still active. Although I don't think his pop-up promos have been A-material, i do think he would do well to act a little cockier.

Do you want to see the Hardyz go at it because you expected more from their first feud? I know I personally think WWE needs to be careful when revisiting old material, as I wouldn't appreciate a re-hash unless it was significantly different from the first.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: From what I remember, the first "feud" was dropped before it ever really got started.

"I hate to sound like a broken record, but those humorous DX Christmas commercials really seem out of place since Triple H and Michaels are both involved in serious, intense angles. ..."

Don't worry, Kevin. Those DX commercials are what sounds like a broken record.

As for Matt Hardy, I agree with you that he is the assailant, but it is not something that I want to see. Matt's career has never been as strong as it now is, so it's not as if he needs a heel turn to generate interest. That being said, The Cutting Edge was a good segment, so I'm not as opposed to the idea as I previously was.

"I mean, when was the last time you saw them run an angle in that division that wasn't, "I'm so mad you got more cheers from me in the bikini contest?""

Michelle-Maria and Beth-Melina. Both angles are over championships and dislike stemming from events occuring in their wrestling matches.

The Divas can't really have a feud over a bikini contest these days since WWE doesn't have them anymore.

I thought the guy in the strange vignette was Ace from Survivor.

I gotta agree with you on the foreshadowing for the Hardy Boyz feud. Take note TNA: This is how you subtlety build a swerve.

I gotta agree again on the whole Kennedy thing. He's definitely lost his edge -- and he's one of my favorite wrestlers. Was it just me or did he say his movie was good for a good laugh between friends? I didn't think Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia was intended to be a comedy.

Has Matt ever been a heel? I know when he first started getting a push with The Brood and Gangrel he was, but that didn't last long and I can't remember him being one since then?

It will be interesting to see how the fans take it, if that is how it plays out. It's a good storyline, I just hope the fans get behind it if/when it's revealed Matt did it.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Has Matt ever been a heel? You mean you have forgotten about Matt Hardy Version 1?

I disagree about the ramp-attack cold-open. And I think it's worth pointing out that the show spent several minutes of airtime "recapping" the attack less than 40 minutes into the episode. WWE has gone absolutely bananas with the recaps. Waaaaaaay too much airtime is spent on them, and it invariably makes me either (1) fast-forward or (2) change the channel.

i disagree with all of you guys

cmon it has to be vladimir kozlov
otherwise why would wwe get matt hardy invloved in an angle with vladimir kozlov if he didnt do it.

Ahhh... the attack on Shawn Michaels by Triple H. That brings me back :)

That attack led to HBK's first match since WrestleMania 14. Although, he did have one match in his Texas-based promotion he ran. He had a hardcore match against the biggest heel there & Justin Credible helped HBK get the win.

"cmon it has to be vladimir kozlov
otherwise why would wwe get matt hardy invloved in an angle with vladimir kozlov if he didnt do it."

Kozlov does have a motive, for Jeff's absence from Survivor Series turned the three-way match into (a temporary) one-on-one match. That being said, Hardy's feud with Kozlov could just mean that the assailant won't be revealed for a few weeks. Heck, the feud could end at Armageddon.

We've seen the Hardy brothers fight each other before. I seem to recall a Jeff vs Matt match a few years ago with Lita as "guest referee". Shortly after this, Team Extreme was not seen on the air for several months. If memory serves, the match was not all that entertaining. I also remember Matt screwing his brother on Raw back in 2003 before making his heel turn and jump to Smackdown with the whole V1 gimmick. So we've seen the Matt Hardy attack his brother and turn heel storyline already, why do it again? There are just too many females like me in love with Matt Hardy ever since they were the "Hardy Boyz" to ever boo this man. No matter what. They tried it with V1 and the results were mixed at best.

For the record, I think WWE is leaving the whole "Who attacked Jeff Hardy?" thing up in the air so that they can use it as an angle for Christian's return. I half expected Christian to come out at Armageddon, interfere, and help Edge win the title. I'm so glad that I saw something different and unexpected...for a change. I think Jeff Hardy's latest adjustments with the face paint and creepier promos are brilliant. It reminds me a lot of Heath Ledger's Joker.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: They did start a Hardy brothers feud but they pulled the plug quickly because , you are correct, I don't think the fans wanted to see it. I do think it makes more sense to do it know, though. Plus, I'm sure ,many of today's fans don't even know the previous feud happened since it came and went so quickly.

My money is on the attacker(s) being Christian and Tomko. Tomko has re-signed with the company and i bet they're just keeping him off tv for when/if Christian re-signs too. That would put Christian into the main event light for his initial push. Even though i'd much rather see an Edge vs. Christian program! If Christian re-signs with TNA then i bet Matt will reveal himself as the attacker. He's the back-up plan.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I just don't think Christian and Tomko as the attackers is as compelling as it being Jeff's own brother. What is the payoff? Jeff vs. Christian? Another Hardys-Edge?Christian feud?
