Highlight of Raw comes from unlikely sources
Before sitting down to watch Raw last night, I never dreamed I would be writing this next sentence: Kane’s story line was the most compelling aspect of the show.
In an angle that unfolded throughout the program, Kane displayed a sudden obsession with Kelly Kelly (stemming from their appearance as co-presenters at the Slammys last week). When she rejected his creepy advances by saying that she was involved with someone, Kane demanded to know who it was.
At first, it appeared that it was The Miz – now that would really be creepy, not to mention just plain wrong – but it turned out to be a swerve, and the identity of Double K’s significant other was not revealed last night.
I am interested to see how this plays out. Kudos to the WWE creative team for making good use of two performers who had been doing little more than taking up space recently. Kane, who has been the unfortunate recipient of some ill-conceived story lines over the years (Katie Vick, the fake Kane, etc.), still has value as a character when used properly. And I am certainly not going to complain about Kelly Kelly getting a bigger role on the show.
As to who her mystery man is, I don’t have a strong feeling. Looking at the Raw roster, there are a few candidates, but no likely ones. CM Punk and Kelly Kelly were briefly linked together in an early ECW story line, but he would seem too obvious. Batista has dated her in real life, but he’s in an angle with Randy Orton and John Cena. Kofi Kingston might be the best choice, as he could use the boost from a higher-profile story line.
I suppose John Morrison is a possibility, but I doubt WWE would turn him face or possibly break up his tag team with The Miz. There’s also Tomko, who is back with WWE and wrestled in a dark match last night. A feud with Kane over Kelly Kelly would be a good way to re-introduce him to the audience.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
The handicap tag match main event that pitted Cena and Batista against Orton, Cody Rhodes and Manu was fine, but the best part of it was the closing shot of an evil-looking Orton on the ramp glaring at Cena. …
Stephanie McMahon’s explanation of how Cena’s opponent for the Royal Rumble was going to be determined had my head spinning at first. It sounded like something Vince Russo dreamed up. However, when I watched it again, it made sense. Eight former world champs will face off in singles matches, and the winners then move on to a fatal four-way, with the winner of that getting the shot at Cena. The lesson learned here is that watching something a second time allows you to get it right. Unless, of course, you are an NFL official for a Ravens-Steelers game.
I know that no one outside of Baltimore will care, but I’m still a little bitter about that call at the end of the game Sunday that gave the Steelers the win and the AFC North title and severely damaged the Ravens’ playoff chances. I was hoping that watching Raw would take my mind off of it, but, as luck would have it, the show took place in Pittsburgh and I had to look at fans wearing Steelers jerseys all night. Plus, Punk was wearing black and gold, so he has heat with me now. Hopefully, I will see a lot of purple Ray Lewis and Joe Flacco jerseys at the Smackdown/ECW taping tonight at 1st Mariner Arena. …
New tag champs Morrison and Miz, who won the title at a house show Saturday in Ontario, had a good match with Punk and Kingston. I like when titles change hands at house shows every now and then. It gives fans more of a reason to attend them if they think there is a chance that something significant could happen. …
It was odd that Kelly Kelly (who was partnered with Melina) and Jillian Hall (with Beth Phoenix) never tagged out during the short tag match. It was even odder when the crowd booed Kelly Kelly for refusing to take Kane’s hand as he threateningly hovered over her in the corner. …
One last comment about Kelly Kelly: She sure does attract some scary-looking individuals – Mike Knox, Balls Mahoney, Kane, etc. Of course, what’s even scarier is that she dated Test in real life. …
The fan who keeps showing up with the Phoenix signs is WWE developmental talent and former Diva Search participant Milena Roucka. Looks like it could be another obsessed fan angle ala Mickie James and Trish Stratus. …
It was finally acknowledged that Deuce, now known as Sim Snuka, is the son of former WWE star Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. He might end up in The Legacy, but I’m not sure the group really needs another member. Perhaps he will feud with them instead. …
There was a “Santa” chant during Santa Haas’ match against Dolph Ziggler. It’s a good thing this show wasn’t in Philly

Comments
Mmm..Prediction, we see Shawn and JBL involved in the 8 former champs match, JBL gets Shawn to lay down and gets into fatal four way. Or is that just too simple?

Maybe I'll be the first to say it: Kelly Kelly's boyfriend may be Christian.
As for the Ravens game, awarding the Steelers a touchdown after review was highly questionable, but the ball would have otherwise been spotted just outside the goaline. The Steelers might have scored a major (legitimately) on fourth down.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: If Christian comes back for anything but a major angle with Edge, WWE is crazy.

Kevin,
Interesting (maybe?) I checked out the rosters for the different brands and the World Tag Champs, Miz and Morrison, are on ECW. So essentially Raw does not have the tag champs. Kind of weird that they do it this way.

On spot analysis of Raw as always.
I loved the Chris Jericho "I refuse to wrestle a scrub like Duggan!"
Steelers fan here and I would have liked to see the call go as 4 and inches, that way when we broke your little purple hearts, there wouldn't have been any excuses.
But Frank Walker exemplified the Ravens typical class by spitting on our punter. Or the Big "O" Overrated Bart Scott threatening to kill Hines Ward, or Terrell Suggs and his, "We have a bounty, we don't have a bounty!"
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Yeah, there are some classless guys on the Ravens. But the Steelers have them, too, with Hines being the most classless.

Wow, another Kane stalker storyline. Yawn. Still, I'm guessing it's Kofi (who looked better than he has in months last night), only because pretty much everyone else is involved in a storyline already. I suppose Tomko is a dark horse candidate, but if the WWE wants to get people interested in him, an opening feud with Kane wouldn't be the way to go.
Both the tag team title and handicap matches were pretty good TV matches. Hopefully this results in a renewed focus on the tag team division, but I'm not holding my breath.
The HBK promo wasn't any more believable last night than it was on Sunday night. It was pretty lazy of the WWE to replay it when the same point could have been gotten across with fresh material.
Posted by: Joe Barber | December 16, 2008 2:21 PM
Yes, the Kane/Kelly Kelly storyline was the highlight of the night.
It was intriguing to see the fans boo Kelly Kelly after she retreated from Kane. I'm glad that made it clear that Kane is staying a heel because it's too early to revert him into a face.
I wonder if Kelly Kelly named The Miz to get back at him for his treatment of her during the Extreme Expose days in ECW. Then I suppose we could expect Kane to attack Mike Knox but Kane would draw a face pop if that happened.
As to who Kelly Kelly's mystery man is you might want to consider that the mystery isn't a man. Could Kelly Kelly be involved with the one of the other Divas? How would Kane react? Would that put a smile on his face? As Howard Stern once said, "Lesbians equal ratings."
And with that I'll take a cold shower.

I really have a problem with PPV time being wasted on this asinine HBK-JBL angle, and then showing the entire thing again on RAW. Just do it for the first time on RAW and add a match to the PPV. The U.S. Champion, World Tag Team Champs, Women's Champion, and WWE Tag Team Champions were all not in action on the PPV. Neither was the Intercontinental Champ, but that's due to the tournament for the #1 Contender. But that's 4 belts that weren't used on Sunday night. They could have easily used a ten minute match on one of them and saved the in ring promo for Monday.

Hey Kevin just wanted to ask a question. Do you think that Hoss and Ziggler will have a feud? I was thinking last night that Dolph's identity seems to mean a lot to him and the fact that hoss changes his identity week after week do you think those two could have a feud together. I know it's a stretch but what do ya think

Kevin , given what went on this weekend , (no one outside B'more will get this either ) maybe Mark Teixeira will be in attendance at 1st Mariner Arena .
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: One can only hope.

I would love for it to be David Steele. I think I speak for everyone when I say we would all love to see him get chokeslammed.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: What's the beef with David?

"I wonder if Kelly Kelly named The Miz to get back at him for his treatment of her during the Extreme Expose days in ECW."
Good thinking, Aaron. I wondered why Kane attacked The Miz if Miz is not the boyfriend.

I gotta say, that was a damn close call. I don't think the officials took the ball breaking the plane of the endzone into consideration, but even then it was pretty close. I do think they made the wrong call, but even then the Steelers have the ball on the half yard line. At least then the Ravens get a chance to put up a stop. I guess in the end I sympathize with the Ravens, though, as my Bears have been on the bad end of a few close reviews this season as well. I'm still trying to figure out how a receiver catches a ball, keeps possession all the way to the ground, has his back on the ground with possession of the ball, and the play is ruled an incomplete pass.
I do sympathize, though. I thought Baltimore was going to shut the Steelers down this past weekend. Look at it this way, at least your team is still controlling their own playoff chances. It's not implausible for them to win out and take the second wildcard spot, and I think they will. I'm also not just saying that because a Dallas loss would greatly help my team out, although my fingers will be crossed.

I read that Jimmy Snuka was backstage at Raw last night. I wonder why they didn't do something with him? Maybe something as simple as shaking his dad's hand backstage after the match. I wonder if anybody will point out that Deuce fought his dad in a tag match at the 2007 Vengeance "Night of Champions"?
At first, I was worried because I thought Kane was "going soft," again and would be a face. But, then he held Kelly Kelly hostage and went crazy. It was awesome.
So, CM Punk had a tag title match tonight. He has an IC title match secured for the future, and he is in the tournament to win a World title shot. He's raking in the title matches.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Nice job remembering that match at Vengeance. I had forgotten about it,

Sara : (other comment only "Sun" readers would get) - how about a tag team match of David Steele and Mike Preston vs. Rick Maese and Kevin "Killer" Eck ?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: We'd get killed.
Posted by: the artist formerly known as jack in hebron | December 16, 2008 5:45 PM
I doubt the WWE wants to remind the audience of Vengeance 2007. It would just remind people of Benoit.
I thought Miz was KK's boyfriend. Wasn't that the whole purpose of Kane choke slamming him?
I really did the new Legacy group. Orton has been the most dynamic performer on Raw since coming back.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Judging by KK's comment later to Mickie james and Candice, she just gave Kane a name so that he would let her go. It's not Miz.
Posted by: Elevation | December 16, 2008 5:45 PM
Didn't we see this Kane angle in 2004 for with Lita? Does Kane have to be a perv again? Will WWE realize that the Legacy will be weighed down by that far bore Manu? Is anybody there? Does anybody care? Other than that, it was a good show last night. Orton is a crazy guy. The whole sequence at the end of that match was intense. Three words: I love Orton.
Posted by: Ropes | December 16, 2008 5:55 PM
I will say that I'm only interested in the Kane/ Kelly Kelly angle because I like Kane. Other than that, it took up too much time last night. As far as I'm concerned, Kelly Kelly isn't good for anything but standing there and looking pretty. She can't wrestle, can't act, can't deliver her promo. I could enumerate her many mistakes/problems last night and last week, but I'd run out of room.
BTW, thank God I'm not going crazy. Two weeks ago, after seeing the same girl three weeks in a row interact with Beth, I thought I was going around the bend by being convinced it was a storyline. Whew! At least I'm not that far gone ... yet.

OK Sanantonio Holmes I'll give you ,the guy's a [jerk], but where do you get off saying that Heins Ward is classless!?! FOR WHAT!?!
That's a bold statment coming from a guy rooting for Ray Lewis .Didn't he MURDER someone about 10 years ago!?! Please...
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Ray was convicted of obstruction of justice, not murder. Hines Ward is a cheap-shot artist and an immature jerk. Geez, I didn't mean for this to turn into a football blog.

I believe I have the origin of a Mr. Dolph Ziggler.. Sorry if it's long.
In the 90s a young blonde headed boy was attending a Raw live event when a member of WWE event staff asked if'd like to come to the back and meet one of his favorite superstars. Over joyed the boy excepted and went with the man. So the boy waited in the hall with a camera hovering over him, and then there he was the boy's favorite superstar. The boy says, "Excuse me sir, can I have your autograph?" The superstar says, "Sure, whats your name kid?" The boy says, Hi I'm..."IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!!!" and the superstar walks off. The boy is distraught, he vows from then on, that he would let everyone know who he is...

It was a little odd though that Kane had a room set up like a police interrogation room, complete with a low hanging, single light.
It's not just Ravens fans because everyone does this but why focus on the official's call? I don't know if it was a touchdown or not. Commentators don't seem to know if the receiver needs to get two feet down in the end zone or have the ball cross the plane of the goal line. In any case, I haven't seen a reply from a sideline camera to know if the ball crossed. I would assume the reply official had the view. Anyway, notice there is no mention of the fact Baltimore started a drive on the Pittsburgh 10 and only got a field goal and then Flacco took a sack late in the game that took Baltimore out of field goal range. That's 7 points they missed out on and 7 points which would have won the game.

Hey Eck,
Do you think that when DiBiase Jr. comes back he might make a face turn against Orton and the rest and team with Snuka? I mean he can't go with Orton's team after getting kicked in the head by him, can he???
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I know that WWE is high on him, but I think it's way too early to turn him face. My guess is that he comes back, acts like he's going to be a face and then swerves everyone by joining Legacy. As for being kicked in the head, he could say that Orton knocked some sense into him or he was just showing him tough love or whatever.

Nice recap of Raw. I agree that the highlight was the KK/Kane thing that was going on. It's kinda weird though...
When Beth and Jillian were attacking Kelly after the match, I was almost expecting Kane to come out, only because I remembered their awkward moment at the Slammys. Then again, I was shocked when it happened.
You know what would be different? A storyline in which a woman willing alligns herself with Kane, right at the start. If I were in the WWE, it would be me. LOL. I love him so.

If KK boyfriend was'nt Miz, then why the chokeslam!
Did anyone hear Miz & Morrison on 105.7FM this morning?
The tag titles were better suited for another team as Miz & Morrison don't need titles to carry them at this point. But the title loss means the Punk will take the IC title from Regal after a couple of good matches. Hope they give Kofi a good storyline. Actually its time for a black faction.
Ben, a Hass/Ziggler feud is an excellent idea.
Although I am not an Orton fan, the WWE should limit his losses. I;m assuming in the contenders tournement he may be pinned again because they won't be setting up a Cena/Orton fued anytime soon. Speaking of Legacy, I glad Snuka may be joining...but would'nt it had be cool if he returned as an immitation of his father!!!
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Kane chokeslammed Miz because Kelly Kelly told Kane she was involved with him. She lied just so she could get away from Kane.
Posted by: Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:07 AM
I think Kane has long been under rated. I hate it when anyone is a jobber to the stars. I think it is a meaningless spot to have, both to the jobber and anyone who beats him. I mean, who cares if you beat someone who is only beating a no name? (Don't get me started on the MVP thing...)
I hope this mystery man isn't Tomko, because that will likely mean Kane will lose AGAIN. The only one I'd like to see go over Kane in this angle is Kofi Kingston, and that's of course if it turns out to be him. You're right, he could use the story to build him up.
I hope they do something like burn Kane's face or scar it so he puts the mask back on. It was a much better look.
The Shawn Micheals angle - all I hope is it leads to something more than just a match between him and JBL. I think the best thing that it could be would be for JBL to contract Micheals to take out guys he's had previous problems with - like the Undertaker. I'd rather see the Undertaker vs HBK done without JBL, but I don't know how long this story is going to go for. When they eventually do square off, it should be at a smaller PPV. If it ends up being HBK vs JBL at wrestlemania, that would be crazier and worse than WWE signing the Ultimate Warrior with creative control. (By the way, not that I'm a fan of his - the guy is a nut cas -, but that so called return of his over in Europe amount to anything?)

I, too, sympathize with you on the ref's call. We Chargers fans have had a coupla them this season. One is widely thought to have cost us the game, and that may be true. But if we'd have been able to stop them in the first place...

As far as the game was concerned, I thought the ball did cross the plane, although I would have been hardpressed so say it was indisputable enough to overturn the call on the field. In any case, the call didn't cost the Ravens the game, it would have still been 4th and goal from the 1/2 inch line, and still a likely Steelers TD. The Ravens left at least 10 points on the field that would have resulted in a victory. It was a bad reversal, but not the reason the Ravens lost on Sunday.
Posted by: Joe Barber | December 17, 2008 11:12 AM
Ravens fans get over it!
The better team won Sunday!
When you get turnovers inside the 20 your offense needs to punch it in for a TD!
Steelers have the better QB and the better receivers!
So get over it!
Orton and Jericho are the best two heels in the business!
Bring back the Highlight Reel!
And please cut JBL the borefest of the 21st century!
Joey Styles for president!

I get sick of seeing Kane get beat down by little guys like Mysterio. Why does creative continue to portray Kane improperly? It's pathetic that they can actually sell Mysterio beating Kane. In reality if the 2 got in a fight, Kane would probably squash that little bug with relative ease. I really hate Miz too. I'd like WWE to feature Kane chokeslamming and Tombstoning him weekly. As for the rest of the show it was ok.
Posted by: Ed | December 17, 2008 12:24 PM
The WWE creative doesn't properly portray Kane. Mysterio beats him cleanly. Are you kidding me? This Kelly Kelly story is stupid too. At least they can feature a chokeslam and tombstone on Miz weekly. As for the game, it's in the books. No use in crying over spilled Milk. Get ready for Dallas. Please knock Tony Romo out along with Owens.

"It was a little odd though that Kane had a room set up like a police interrogation room, complete with a low hanging, single light."
Maybe, but it wasn't as odd as when Randy Savage and Gene Okerlund watched Saturday Night's Main Event on a monitor in a janitor's closet. I remember Jesse Ventura's thoughts on the scene: "WHERE are they?"
Posted by: Christopher | December 17, 2008 1:04 PM
I totally feel your pain, Marko. I know if I was a Chargers fan this season I would be livid. I saw two big calls that I am certain should have gone their way that didn't and basically cost them the game. You're right that if these teams would put up a stand in the first place they wouldn't need to depend on a call, but trust me, after seeing three first-half leads slip away this season, you're always stuck thinking about the little what-ifs in those close games.
Posted by: Mr. E. | December 17, 2008 1:06 PM
I'm guessing that KK's mystery boyfriend is another KK - Kofi Kingston. It would give him a nice little push since the tag team thing with CM Punk appears to be done.
As for the Michaels/JBL angle, here's how I see it playing out. Michaels and JBL each win their qualifying match. The Fatal Four Way would be JBL, Michaels, Batista, and Jericho. Towards the end of the match, Jericho is down, then Orton comes down and takes out Batista. JBL, seeing the opportunity, orders Michaels to lay down for him to give him the title shot. Michaels does and JBL goes to face Cena. JBL loses to Cena.
Then, in the Royal Rumble match itself, JBL and Michaels are two of the last 4 in the match (maybe even the final two). Again, JBL orders Michaels to go over the top rope and to the floor to give him the automatic title shot at Wrestlemania. Michaels goes over the top rope, but not to the floor. JBL turns around, and then Michaels comes back in and eliminates him. Then he eliminates himself.

I was reading The Sun's Q & A with Lorenzo Neal and stumbled upon this interesting little tidbit:
(Q) - "As a former All-America wrestler at Fresno State, do you ever wonder how your life would have been different if you had pursued a career in wrestling?
(A) - Sometimes I think I could have won the Olympics. I think I had a shot. Kurt Angle [against whom Neal competed] won it [in 1996]. My heart just wasn't into it. My heart's been into football."
I know he's talking about amateur wrestling, but Lorenzo Neal could have been a major force in pro wrestling had he chosen to pursue that route. I assume Kurt Angle beat him in 1996, but I would guess that Lorenzo “The Juggernaut” Neal would destroy Kurt “Your Olympic Hero” Angle if they competed today, either in an amateur or pro wrestling contest. Neal looks like he has about 100 pounds of muscle mass over Angle these days.

Kevin, the eight matches then the fatal four-way to determine a no. 1 contender is lifted straight from one of the "Road to Wrestlemania" scenarios in SD vs. Raw 2009. And if I am not mistaken, it is Chris Jericho's 'Road' where the winner faces Cena, who is the champ at...wait for it....The Royal Rumble.Only difference is that Jericho is a heel on RAW right now and a face in the game. I've heard of recyclng material, but from a video game?Wow.
