Angle-Jarrett angle on Impact is a real turnoff

Congratulations, TNA. A promo by the biggest star in the company managed to do something that not even Shark Boy’s lame skits or Hermie Sadler’s grating commentary could do.

It made me turn the channel.

Those who watched Impact last night know exactly what I am referring to. Jeff Jarrett’s tragic family situation was used once again in a despicable and desperate attempt to get heat on Kurt Angle.

Angle cut a promo in which he again brought up Jarrett’s three young daughters, mentioning them by name as their photos were shown. He said that after he gets through with Jarrett, the girls will be orphans. As most people reading this know, Jeff’s wife, Jill, succumbed to breast cancer last year.

By my count, this is the third instance in which Jill Jarrett’s death has been used for story line fodder. This time, a furious Jeff Jarrett came out to confront Angle. As he was being restrained from going after Angle, Jarrett said, “I’ve heard that s--- for the last time.”

My thoughts exactly, Jeff. Fortunately, there was no one restraining me from going after the remote. I just don't see the entertainment value in any of this.

Am I saying that I will never watch Impact again? No. In fact, I’ll be watching next Thursday, which happens to be Christmas day. Perhaps, in the spirit of the season, TNA will curb the talk of dead spouses and orphans for that night. If not, I will commence to channel surfing again.

On TNA’s Web site today, the main headline (accompanied by photos of Jarrett’s daughters) said: "Kurt goes too far: Now it’s personal."

No, it’s not. It’s pathetic.

The obvious intent of this angle is to make viewers sympathize with Jarrett and pay their money to see him give Angle what he has coming to him. What TNA fails to realize, however, is that it’s tough to sympathize with Jarrett when he is a willing participant in a story line that exploits his wife’s death. I can just imagine Jarrett congratulating Angle backstage for his performance and telling him how great the heat was for the “orphans” line.

That's not to say that I believe Jarrett is a bad person or that he doesn't love his family. I just think he's alllowing Jeff Jarrett the wrestling promoter to cloud the judgment of Jeff Jarrett the widower and father.

I agree...it's taking things too far. WWE has done this quite a bit, but never to this extreme. This shouldnt come as a surprise...TNA is after all booked by Russo, who goes by his controversy = ratings mantra.

Kev , you know at one time I was one of the biggest defenders of TNA to to add comments to your blog .
I enjoyed it because of the similarites to WCW which I favored over WWE. Over the course of time their airings have gotten worse and worse and the Jarrett storyline has now become the final straw for me . Other than maybe tuning in ocassionally to see a few of my favorites, ie; Scott Steiner and "what's her name" , I'll probably be watching something else in that time slot .
Kev , I officially concide to you regarding our past fueds about TNA vs. WWE .
That being said , with my dislike of WWE (actually Vince McMahon) , I'll get my wrestling fix with 20 year old "You-Tube clips.

Angle better be careful. We all know what happened to the Big Boss Man after he called Big Show a bastard and dragged Show's dad's coffin behind his car.

My father passed on when I was 12. Aside from my own grief, there were my classmates who knew my father died, but most of them didn't have experiences of their own with death. Some would be overly sympathetic towards me, some would make lame jokes. No one did both on national TV.

I don't think your protest has anything to do with television, just compassion for 3 young girls who will never get to see their mother again. I agree with your actions... the last thing those girls need is for an angle like this to run on cable TV. Explaining to them that "it's just TV" is not going to work when it's their images on the screen. Explaining "it's just daddy's job" is not going to work because it's untruthful.

This is neither sports nor entertainment. You're right to change the channel.

Thanks for the heads-up, I won't tune in to the replay.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I have had my own experience with death in my immediate family, and perhaps that's why I am sensitive to it. Like I've said before, I'm all in favor of pushing the envelope, but it is possible to go too far. Ultimately, it's TNA's right to go in any direction it likes. And it's my right to choose not to watch it.

Kevin, you are correct. It's pathetic that Jarrett is willing to "whore" out his personal tragedy just to make a few bucks. His wife and daughters deserve better.

Hi Kevin I just got dish tv and watched TNA for the first time since reading your blogs about it. i found the acting during the booker t and his wife for get the name was terrble and commintating boring saying out great acting she did. luckly the colts jags game was on at same time. The scripts for the WWE is much better, least with my opinion and your right bringing up some one losing there battle to cancer does cross the line

Could not agree with you more. Hated it the first time the reference aired, and the second, and last night I turned the TV off. Did Jeff's wife die so TNA Wrestling could make something of it, and make money from it? I sure hope not, and to continue this story line is to besmirch her memory and make TNA Wrestling look a heck of a lot more juvenile, tasteless and useless than it already is.

It's cheap heat at its finest, because this angle could easily get over without the bottom of the barrel tactics. It's an extra shame as it overshadows TNA's more focused and improved Impacts as of late. Granted, it's not much worse than the two years of Eddie-spoitation that we got from the 'E', but still bad nonetheless.

You know, there's a reason I first started calling Jeff Jarrett "Fast Forward". It's because if I had ever taped a show with him (be it Nitro or Raw) and a segment with him came on, I fast forwarded to the next one. I have just never found him to be a compelling character on TV and I guess things haven't changed. Why couldn't Jarrett have gotten the "FIRED" briefcase instead of Curry Man??!! I couldn't have been more disappointed when that all came out even if it was obvious he was the one leaving. Oh well. KooooooooNIIIIIIchiiiiiiwwwaaaaaaaaaa!

I lost my father at 8 years old and I can't imagine being able to comprehend my mother doing something like this for "work". I turned the show off at the same time.

Kudos Kev for standing up for what's right. I'm going to fast forward through most of TNA like I always do but now I know what to skip the most. I think this is far beyond Eddie being used, mainly because Eddie loved/lived the business. Jill married into it and was never an on screen character so her mention is just without taste. I wonder how Jill's immediate family feels? Yeah Jarrett, probably not too good, jerk.

"Angle better be careful. We all know what happened to the Big Boss Man after he called Big Show a bastard and dragged Show's dad's coffin behind his car."

I wasn't watching WWE at that time because the product made me sick.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was Vince Russo not writing for the E at that point in time? And now he's writing for TNA when they are presenting a dead-wife angle. But in fairness, I don't know how much of this comes from Russo and how much comes from Jarret.

I'm not saying I condone what Angle did, but the first thing I did when I heard the line was laugh. It was so unexpected and caught me off guard so badly that I didn't know what else to do.

I'm not trying to play devil's advocate, but I'm sure Jeff wouldn't do the angle if his children weren't okay with it.

Other than that, Impact was a mixed bag for me.

The only way the Sarah Palin bits with the Beautiful People will pay off is if the real Sarah Palin shows up at the pay per view. It was cool when they offered $50,000 to charity if she showed up at the last pay per view - that got their name in the news and got people talking. Now, it's just stupid. Stupid is the only way to describe it.

On a positive note, I thought Kurt Angle mentioning Owen Hart and then pausing to let the crowd chant his name was very classy.

I lost my dad when i was 8 years old but i think u guys are getting a bit carried away. Wrestling has always used controversial story lines to up the ante and i am sure Jeff Jarrett is a great father and his kids is hismain concern and he will make sure they will not be affected by this storyline.

Kev, its the crappy Angle-Jarrett storyline thats got you turning the channel? Are you sure its not the choppy matches and lack of star power? There used to be a time where fans turned into TNA to see actual wrestling by stars they never saw in WWE, not to get a reminder of what WCW looked like back in the 90's, and a lackluster middle card crew.

Seriously, put Big Poppa Pump and a few other stiffs out to pasture and give the green light to guys who deserve air time. I mean it really can't be that hard to offer Nigel mcGuiness, Bryan Danielson, and the Brisco bros. a contract, can it??

The Angle/JJ angle is totally classless. Talking about a dead wife isn't going to help PPV numbers, so stop talking about her.

Can someone tell the morons at TNA that the election ended almost two months ago? Palin jokes are so behind the times. Only idiots like Dutch Mantel and Vince Russo thinks its still funny. I'm surprised they don't bring in a Monica Lewinsky impersonator because they think she is still relevant.

Its like I want to enjoy TNA. They have a great roster, and great matches excluding the gimmick on a pole BS, but there is just a wall that separates me from actually really liking TNA. Its just too hard to overlook all the horrible booking and creative decisions that TNA keeps making again and again and again.

Haven't TNA learned from WWE on how not to draw money or ratings via exploiting the tragic family situation. It embarassed me as a whole especially since they supposed to be The. New. Alternative. or Total Nonstop Action. Well, obiviously this booking of the angle kinda reminds of the Big Bossman-Big Show angle recently the Eddie Guerrero storyline

can you people prove jeff jarett authorized these comments? how do you know it isn't a shoot , bear with me but i read russo's autibiography and he says certain wrestlers would say things unauthorized in wwe and wcw all the trme? how do you know kevin that jarett approved this?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Jarrett has a stake in the company, and nothing gets on TV that he doesn't want on TV. Even if Angle were to go off script, since the show isn't live, it would be edited out if Jarrett didn't want it in there. Think about it -- photos of Jarrett's kids aired during Angle's promo. How could that not be planned ahead of time? And look at how TNA played the angle up on its Web site. Trust me -- this was no shoot.

Hey Kevin . . . TNA has certainly lost its edge in the last 6 months . . . first they recreate the whole lame NWO angle . . . and now they pull a stunt with the Jarrett personal history that is akin to WWE of old . . . if they are not careful, in another 6 months they could be claiming bankruptcy protection.
