The release of two once-promising WWE stars

When the latest WWE cuts were announced today, I wasn’t surprised at the names on the list – Kenny Dykstra, Elijah Burke and Lena Yada – because all three of them have had insignificant roles of late. I am a bit surprised, however, that Dykstra and Burke ended up in this position in the first place.

Both were at one time considered to be can’t-miss prospects. Vince McMahon, in fact, even proclaimed on television that Burke was the future of ECW.

Dykstra was something of a prodigy, as he became a regular on Raw in 2006 at 19 as a member of the Spirit Squad. Dykstra was clearly regarded as the star of the group, and he received a singles push after it was disbanded. He feuded with Ric Flair and scored several victories over the “Nature Boy,” but there just seemed to be something missing with him.

He was eventually paired with Victoria, but then disappeared from TV a few months later. When he was brought back over the summer, he was placed in one humiliating position after another, and it seemed as if the writing was on the wall.

I have a feeling that Dykstra, who is still only 22, will end in WWE again at some point. If he was brought back with the right gimmick, he is athletic enough that he could make an impact.

I’m not sure what went wrong with Burke. During a time in which WWE seems to be making an effort to push more African-Americans, Burke was the forgotten man. He showed some charisma and in-ring ability when he debuted on Smackdown in 2006, and he went on to became the leader of the New Breed vs. ECW Originals feud. He had a series of pay-per-view matches with CM Punk over the ECW title, but he also did jobs for ECW mid-carders such as Balls Mahoney. Eventually, Burke’s role was diminished to the point where he didn’t have a role at all.

As for Yada, no disrespect to her, but I doubt that anyone will even notice that she’s gone.

They blew it big time with Burke. Maybe there were some attitude issues we didn't hear about, because he's got the look, the mic skills and pretty good ring skills.

Here's to hoping TNA snatches him up.

I guess they didn't pay the requisite number of compliments to Hunter and Steph.

I would love to see both guys wind up in TNA. They would be great additions to that roster.

I'm not going to lie and say I'll really miss anyone that was cut recently, but all the cuts and rumors of more cuts have me wondering something:

How can they build a stable roster if no one can be protected for more than a month before they have to do a job to help someone else get their heat back? It's a big risk to think MVP can ever get his heat back after this streak (if that's even the long term goal) and how many times is a "unbeatable" guy beat to put someone over without any buildup? Kane loses all the time, so does Big Show, Mark Henry and then there's the handicap tag-team squashes....

TNA isn't doing much better, burying the future like anyone will still be watching when the payoff comes.

I just wonder if fans would sit through a squash if it made sense and told a good story? WCW could get away with them because the big plot progressed around the match, not in it usually. Plus jobbers don't cost much, Bobby Heenan didn't call them ham & eggers for nothing.

It's like the Orioles. We're 10 years from the glory days and not one or two roster moves away from fixing the thing. There has to be something done differently.

Do you see Burke or Dykstra going to TNA? I know Dykstra isn't Kenny's real last name, so he'll have to change that, but do you happen to know if Elijah Burke is his Burke's real name?

I remember Scott Hall's debut match.Looking back now,I can only think to myself, what a wasted career. The Razor Ramon act worked for a while and the original takeover with Nash and Sting as NWO was cool, but nobody in recent memory has gotten as many chances as Scott Hall.Maybe nobody else in wrestling as long as I've been watching it which is about 45 years. What might have been!

trust me I'll miss Yada

I think they were expecting Burke to get over huge as leader of the New Breed. Vince came out on ECW one night and said how great he was. How often does Vince just praise a guy on TV like that, a guy who wasn't in an angle with him?

With Vince endorsing him as the future and having Burke's group feud with the popular ECW Originals, I think he was expecting Burke to get the type of huge heat Chris Jericho is getting right now.

What do you do when a guy works well, cuts good promos, and is given TV time to do so yet the live audience responds with "eh, whatever"? At least if the guy isn't very good at the beginning, you can just try and hope he improves. Burke was good from the start, though, so it's a weird deal.

Wholetruthy beat me to it but Yada was definately the best looking of the three and I'll miss her, too.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: If you're saying that she's better-looking that Burke and Dykstra, you won't get any argument from me.

Yada is very attractive, but most of the divas are, and I just don't think she stood out. Like WWE, however, I wish her well in her future endeavors.

I will miss Lena Yada. She was just part of a six women Tage Team battle at FCW last Thursday, and had two studio photo shoots done and presented by WWE within the last two weeks, and now she is gone. She added a lot to WWE in general, and to the Divas in particular, and she will be missed.

Kenny has the most spirit of the three. What could Kenny's name be in TNA? Ronny Kruk? Aaron Daulton? "Wild Thing" Mitch Williams?

this sucks. i really thought Burke was a star waiting to happen. i really enjoyed his promos and in ring work. when he started to not show up on tv, then showed back up for like one episode with the vampire/dark look or whatever it was supposed to be i knew he was gone.
i was hoping he would come back with R Truth to be a tag team. would have been a lot better than Cryme Tyme thats for sure!

It's not like ECW had the deepest roster, so I'm puzzled by the move to cut him. That's ok....The "Black Pope" will rise again. 4-UP!!!!

I always joke with my friends that Elijah Burke was everything that Orlando Jordan should've been. It does kinda suck that they released him, b/c he definately had the mic skills and the talent. We have no clue of what the backstage politics were with him, but I'm guestimating that there just wasn't a good storyline for him or a feud to involve him in. It would've been interesting to see him go at it with Benjamin and R-Truth, I would say.

I am grasping at straws, but maybe fans couldn't get past Burke's initial role as Sylvester Terkay's lackey.

These are really suprising to me.I thought for sure Burke was going to be one of the next big superstars, and Dykstra had potential.I don't see what's so wrong about keeping a guy around awhile to at least try and let them develop. As I recall it took guys like Triple H,Stone Cold,The Rock the Hardy Boys,Edge,Randy Orton and Batista all a good couple years before they beceme Main Eventers. It's all about finding the right gimmic, working with the right people and learning your craft. It Just seems like in today's WWE if you're not a Superstar right of the bat you're givin' the pink slip. It's a shame I hope TNA picks them up but they may be even worse at nurturing talent.Maybe after awhile some of these guy who can actually work will get fed up with being misused and decide that the don't want to be spots entertainers and move to Ring of Honor so we can have Big Three again.

I am surprised vince fired all three. Burke had a good look and was charismatic. Dykstra has some talent and he is really easy to hate.

It would be a good feud between leda and gail kim if they brought her back. There is a big asian market like kahli is to India. What kind of role model is jimmy wang yang?

The overall problem regarding talent being severely underutilized lies squarely at the fingertips of each creative team member. Releasing young still developing talent is a travesty of an immeasurable amount. Elijah Burke had possibly the strongest chance between himself and Kenny Dykstra of reaching the promise land of "Main Event” entertainer. Creative could've put together a "Training Day" rogue cop style gimmick for him (Burke) to capitalize on his former law enforcement background. This would've given the character a deep well from which to pull some extremely entertaining promo's from. The persona could aggressively shakedown a heel or a face without missing a beat. The road of exploration could've been an interesting journey.

As for Dykstra, going one on one with the likes of Flair or Batista was much too big for him. Securing wins against either of these guys would have fallen into can 13 on the cutting room floor. No one cares. However, putting him in a young lions attempting to takeover the world would've been much more stimulating. The angle could've had Dykstra fed up with the backstage antics of being constantly passed over while wrestling dinosaurs keep getting main event pushes. The angle would begin like so: Dykstra gets a hold of the email address for each superstar and sends a phony message about a very important meeting that everyone must attend in a designated meet room. When it appears that everyone has assembled, Dykstra then chains the door setting the stage for him to enter the ring to blow off some major steam. Flash to the hands of a late arriver visibly tugging on the lock (face not revealed). The late guy heads out to get help, passes a monitor hears Dykstra and goes to the ring. Through the curtain it's Ol' Hacksaw JD". Hacksaw then asks Dykstra, "What's going on here tuff guy" and Dykstra responds by saying, "Ya see this is the crap I'm talkin' about", and proceeds to sucker punch Hacksaw with a closed fist covering a roll of quarters. Through a very heinous act of beating the holy snot out of Hacksaw JD, Dykstra becomes a colossal heel and goes on to create a super group of equally oppressed "Young Lions" that mirrors the likes of The Four Horseman, NWO, or DX. Dykstra could've carried the new role very well and for quite a long time. But as things go, we'll never know with either entertainer as the WWE royally messed up releasing both talents much too soon. As for Lena Yada, well she was just hot. Woooooooooooo!

I really will miss seeing Ms. Yada every week. She was one of the reasons I watched the show. I don't care what you say, but she was one prettiest ladies in the business.
I was hoping to see her in some type of lingerie match or pillow fight match, but I guess no such luck.
What ever she does, I hope for nothing but the best for her.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I never said she wasn't pretty. She was very attractive. I just think ina company full of attractive women, she didn't make much of an impression.
