MEM’s clean sweep makes sense, but will it make dollars?

In checking out the results of TNA’s Turning Point pay-per-view, I learned that the Ravens’ 41-13 victory over the Houston Texans wasn’t the only rout yesterday.

The Main Event Mafia went 4-for-4: TNA world champion Sting defeated A.J. Styles; Kevin Nash defeated Samoa Joe; Kurt Angle defeated Abyss; and Booker T. defeated Christian Cage.

I can’t say I’m surprised that all four MEM members won. It was the first pay-per-view after the group formed, so one would expect the heels to go over to build for the inevitable rematches.

It’s logical booking, but there is a problem. The TNA babyface faction, led by Joe and Styles, were portrayed as uncool and inferior heading into the show, and now they look even worse.

Assuming that all of this is leading to the MEM getting its comeuppance at some point, the question is: Will the fans already have given up on the babyfaces by then? For this to be a money angle, the fans need to believe in the babyfaces and be emotionally invested in them. Time will tell, but I have my doubts.

Before the pay-per-view, the only match I thought the MEM night not win was Nash versus Joe. I figured there might be some type of disqualification. At least Joe looked strong in defeat, but he still lost. The guy is supposed to be the top babyface in TNA, but Nash has made him look like a fool for almost a year now.

As I have said before, the Nash-Joe feud absolutely should end with Joe scoring a clean, convincing win. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but based on Nash’s track record, no one should be surprised if he manages to avoid doing the job.

Some other thoughts:

The Angle-Abyss falls-count-anywhere match reportedly stole the show. As banged up as Angle’s body is, it’s nothing short of amazing that he can still perform at such a high level. I can’t help but wonder what his quality of life will be after he’s done wrestling. …

Scott Hall, who was booked to be in the main event of last year’s Turning Point and then no-showed, actually got some screen time last night. He was sitting at ringside with the Insane Clown Posse. You can’t make this stuff up. TNA couldn’t possibly be considering doing business again with Hall, could it? Who’s next, Jake Roberts?

"Assuming that all of this is leading to the MEM getting its comeuppance at some point, the question is: Will the fans already have given up on the babyfaces by then?"

I'm hoping the answer is no.

In any good movie, the heroes flirt with hitting bottom before resurrection. Usually also the case with young talented babyfaces in wrestling.

This has a lot of potential. I truly hope TNA doesn't blow it. I think it has a 50/50 chance of being done well at this point.

I'm also hoping it can put some pressure on WWE to work harder to put over the younger talents. CM Punks handling this year has been a crime of laziness.

"As banged up as Angle’s body is, it’s nothing short of amazing that he can still perform at such a high level. I can’t help but wonder what his quality of life will be after he’s done wrestling. …"

Agreed.

This is a guy who won an olympic gold medal with a broken neck, right?

As amazing as Angle's drive is, I honestly do worry about him, that he does not push his limits beyond the point of no return. Mind over matter only works for so long....

Apparently Hall and his friends were seated at ring side, but then had to move because they were distracting from the matches. Theres no way TNA would be stupid enough to sign him again.

I read that Christian's time with TNA is almost up, and he could be returning to WWE anytime now. Have you heard anything about that?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I have only heard the same rumors you have regarding Christian.

Why do you even bother? Clearly you're a WWE mark. You don't even do predictions for TNA PPVs.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: OK, now you've hurt my feelings.

Hall to join MEM and he should be the last!!! MEM should avoid adding too many members.

I would support MEM they are cool. Tna originals man...so uncool

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: If TNA does business with Hall the decision makers are insane. Even if Hall was in shape and had cleaned up his act, he doesn't have the qualifications to be in MEM. All of the give have been world champs; Hall never has.

Kev , do my eyes decieve me ? Are you actually giving time to TNA PPV's ????
Re: Scott Hall , and your comment about not ever being a world champ - that '86 AWA tag team title has to mean something :)
As foolish as it sounds that TNA would even consider doing business w /Hall again , this old fool would like to see it .

It makes sense in agreeing with your blog about all the members winning then down the road build up the babyfaces. However, they are not building them up to have them on a level playing field with the star(s) of the MEM.

As far as Scott Hall goes....I think management would take a major chance with having someone who appears to be unstable on as an employee. I remember when I was younger watching Mr. Hall and really enjoying the "I'm the Bad Guy." play. I watched a clip on youtube of his 'apology" if you want to call that with the situation about the Iron Sheik roast. He stated "Im too old now to change, so.." He did not look well at all. If Mr. Hall is trying to get his way back in the wrestling landscape doing it through busting down the door probably is not the answer. It is really sad to look at Scott, Jake the Snake, and other wrestlers now and see the toll on them with all the matches they have been involved in and the outlets, or vices they use to make it through the day. I really hope that we don't read a headline with Scott or Jake found passed away in some seedy hotel room...I guess wrestling is like professional sports where they use the person cause there is a contract signed and want to make the $$$ without concern for the long term well being of that inidivdual. Maybe I am in the minority when it comes to this with the wrestlers we enjoy watching....

Agree with never letting Hall into MEM, (or back in TNA at all)
I feel no need to revisit the days of a 14 man NWO complete with Virgil/Vincent Horace Boulder and Scott Norton.

Kevin, do you think this is a chance to give some of the other guys (other than AJ and Joe) a chance to step up their game? With the promo, EY might get a chance. Also, do you think we could see the return of the Fallen Angel in this storyline?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: It looks as if Eric Young will get a chance. I didn't care for his character, especially the Super Eric stuff. I feel the opposite way about Daniels. There is no denying his talent, but I find him more entertaining as Curry Man.

"If TNA does business with Hall the decision makers are insane."

One word. Russo.

TNA is terrible and I completely disagree with having ALL of the young guys lose. It just makes them feel inferior, which they are. Besides Joe and Styles, not one of the "TNA Originals" is credible, not even close. They need to start getting victories or this awful, Russo-esque, recycled storyline will only hit rock bottom.

What a joke of a wrestling company. Let's call it the Death of WCW Vol. 2. At least WWE knows how to craft decent, sensible storylines.

I kinda of got the feeling in at least the last three matches of the night that this might actually be a Turning Point for TNA.
It seemed eveyone in the MEM did their best to try and put their oppents over even in defeat.
The Angle vs. Abyss match was indeed the show stealer and this from a guy who had completly given up on Abyss since his return.(He still needs to stop talking, and lose about 25-30 lbs. to help his mobility.)
Nash hasn't sold like that for anybody since he was Diesel in WWF, when he had great matches with Shawn Michales,Bret Hart and Undertaker.
This was also the best match I've seen out of Sting in awhile. This was the kinda match I thought A.J. and Angle were gonna have together.I thought those would be instant classics but I feel they fell short of their true potential.
Most importantly all three matches TOLD A STORY!! Which is what I feel has been missing from TNA matches. All the matches were paced out nicely and had high spots where high spots were needed, not just doing them for the sake of doing them, nothing seemed forced or rushed and hell, even the announcers did a really good job of helping to tell the story, not over selling ever single move as they tend to do.
All in all it was a solid card; The X division match was exciting as they always tend to be despite having not been promoted at all;Roxxi &Wilde vs.Kong & Saeed was a good tag team match (male or female);Rhino vs. bootleg Iron Sheik wasn't going to intrest me no matter how you slice it.(Rhino needs a big heal turn and some major character devolpment for me to find him intresting again,he hasn't thrilled me since he first debuted in the old ECW.);I'm guilty of not paying to much attention to Christian and Booker T. not for lack of intrest it's just that me and my brother got off on another subject and missed most of the match. The last five min. I did watch were done well; and my two favorite tag teams had a quality match with Beer Money retaining aganist MCMG.My only problem with this and every other tag match in TNA is that at the end it always turns into a giant spot fest .There is something to be said about basic tag team psychology.
On a side note the MCMG had it right when the completly disrespected Mick Foley in the locker room. That's how this whole "locker room divided" thing should have played out from the begining, the younger guys telling the older guys this is a young mans game and your time has past and the older guys teaching them some respect.I really never saw the lack of respect from Joe and especially from A.J.It would have been much more intriguing for A.J.and Joe to play the brash cocky heels, selling themeselves as the future of the business and for the older guys to step out of there way. That way they could have turned Angle face and Sting wouldn't be in this akward heal role(and don't let anybody give you grief Eck,Stinger is not even remotely attempting to try and be a heal). Then you could see more of what we saw last night, the young guys getting a rub from the vets, and then at the end of the feud after the vets gave the young guys all they could handel the young guys finally show respect for the vets and the vets pass the tourch saying "The business is good hands with guys like you."And ride out into the sunset.Because let's face it Sting has already hinted at retirement,Nash can not put on to many more peformances like that without having to have another surgery,Steiner has maybe one good year left and I was thinking the same thing about Angle myself last night he needs to slow down or he will be in a wheelchair the rest of his life.
What would be intresting would be to have Christian and the Guns form a side faction since they are both kinda of playing the fence anyway. But what with Christian having to join the MEM now that kinda shoots that out of the water.I'm sure his gonna try to stir the pot and cause friction from witin the MEM,he's a great instigator.

This is 100% rumor, so take it for what it is, but I read that Hall was asked to leave the pay per view after going backstage after sitting ringside because he was drunk. Eck, maybe you can confirm or (hopefully) debunk this rumor.

Also, you should be wise to not make an enemy out of Jake Roberts. He's in a mood to start MySpace rants. His latest nonsence deals with John Cena Sr.
