No Mercy thoughts
I’m going to be honest: If it wasn’t for the Chris Jericho-Shawn Michaels ladder match headlining the show, I might have opted to watch the Steelers-Jaguars game last night instead of WWE’s No Mercy pay-per-view. I just wasn’t all that excited about the other matches on the card. Even Triple H versus Jeff Hardy, which I initially was interested in, lost some luster as the focus was put on Vladimir Kozlov.
As it turns out, I’m glad I skipped the football game – and not just because the hated Steelers won. The ladder match lived up to high expectations, and the rest of the No Mercy card exceeded my expectations.
Sure, some of the results were predictable, but every match was laid out well and the booking made sense.
Here’s a match-by-match look at last night’s show:
World heavyweight champion Chris Jericho defeated Shawn Michaels in a ladder match: Amazingly, these two keep managing to top themselves. This was a tremendous back-and-forth match that featured a number of painful-looking ladder spots and a fantastic finish. Both men will be sore for sure, but Jericho appeared to have gotten the worst of it. Early in the match, Jericho was bleeding from the mouth and had a broken tooth after being nailed in the face with a ladder. Later, he and Michaels both took a big bump off a ladder through the announce table, and Jericho also was sent flying off a ladder onto the floor. It appeared that he might have legitimately injured his knee on that one, but I think he was just selling. Near the end of the match, Jericho got his leg caught in the ladder and it looked as if Michaels was going to win, but Lance Cade interfered and stopped Michaels from grabbing the belt. The finish saw Jericho and Michaels both tugging at the belt before the two inadvertently bumped heads, which knocked Michaels off the ladder and allowed Jericho to snatch the belt.
WWE champion Triple H defeated Jeff Hardy: This reminded me of a vintage Ric Flair title defense, when Flair would barely escape with the championship, and the challenger would come out of the match looking as if he was every bit Flair’s equal. There were a lot of near falls and the finishing sequence was awesome. After Hardy missed the Swanton Bomb, Triple H went for the Pedigree, but Hardy countered with the Twist of Fate. Hardy then nailed the Swanton Bomb, and for a moment I thought he was actually going to win the title. But Hardy made a nonchalant cover, and Triple H hooked his arms and pinned him. I kept waiting for Vladimir Kozlov to interfere, but he never did. I’m glad he didn’t, because it would have ruined a great match. Kozlov did have a stare-down with Triple H backstage after the match.
The Big Show defeated The Undertaker: The match was a lot better than I thought it would be, and the finish was a bit of a surprise. I didn’t expect either man to win decisively, but The Big Show went over in convincing fashion. The referee stopped the match after Big Show landed a couple of hard shots to Undertaker’s head – including a rabbit punch – that knocked him unconscious. Undertaker did a great job of selling the beating after the match.
Batista defeated JBL: I was pretty sure that Batista was going to win this match, which determined the No. 1 contender for the world heavyweight title, but it turned out to be more one-sided than I thought. It makes sense, though, for Batista to make quick work of JBL so he looks strong heading into his title match with Jericho. The losses are piling up for JBL, however, and it’s going to be hard to keep him in the top tier at this rate.
ECW champion Matt Hardy defeated Mark Henry: Hardy and Henry have surprisingly good chemistry in the ring, as evidenced by this match and their prior meeting on ECW in August. Hardy worked on Henry’s legs to neutralize his size and strength advantage, and he eventually hit the Twist of Fate for the victory after slipping out of The World’s Strongest Slam. Finally gaining a win over Henry legitimizes Hardy’s title reign, and Henry looked good in defeat.
Rey Mysterio defeated Kane by disqualification: The quality of the match far exceeded the quality of the Mysterio-Kane story line heading into the show. Despite the contrast in size and styles, these two worked very well together and made the match look believable. Kane ended up being disqualified for smashing Mysterio in the face with a chair as Mysterio went for a splash from the top rope onto the floor. The finish allowed Mysterio to keep his mask and Kane to keep his heat. Mysterio was clutching his knee after the match, and he was either doing a great sell job or he was really hurt.
WWE women’s champion Beth Phoenix defeated Candice Michelle: The match only went about four minutes and was a little sloppy at times, as Michelle’s timing is still off. “The Glamazon” won clean, but the tension between her and Santino Marella is building, as his interference nearly backfired. It looks as if Phoenix is going to end up turning babyface whenever the inevitable split occurs.
Other notes: It looks as if MVP might be headed for a babyface turn. He had an entertaining verbal confrontation with Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase Jr., Cody Rhodes and Manu. Well, I thought it was entertaining; the crowd started a “boring” chant during it. The segment ended with the three second-generation stars brawling with MVP, CM Punk and Kofi Kingston. For a second I thought Punk and Kingston were turning heel, as they initially acted like they were setting up MVP before they helped him. … Jeff Hardy squashed Triple H in a text voting poll that asked fans who they were rooting for in the WWE title match. Hardy got 72 percent of the vote. I’m guessing a lot of teenage girls were texting like crazy. … I was happy to see the Cryme Tyme segment. Hey, it’s a long show and you have to use the bathroom at some point.

Oh well --- we sort of knew the results.
I was a bit disappointed overall, with the exception of the Jericho/Michaels match, but I'm very upset over that match. While I know this is sports entertainment and the winners are determined beforehand, it really bothers me that especially in championship matches, outside interference is allowed. While Jericho is a good wrestler, although quite the heel, I felt the only way he won that match last night was with the help of Lance Cade --- and the only thing that redeems that is the fact that it's just a matter of time before Jericho taking credit for everything, has Lance Cade turn on him. Sadly, though, I see Shaune Michaels going closer and closer to retirement. He's definitely not the show stopper he used to be.
Talking about outside interference, two other issues --- one, I can't stand Kozlov, but I'm glad he didn't interfere in the actual match. And second, any idea/thoughts on when Edge is returning? He's been out about a month now --- He's another one that I think is a good wrestler, who can win without the aid of others.
The thing that disappointed me was after the initial handshake, Triple H hit Hardy after backs were turned. I like both of them and I think they have a mutual respect of each other and I think that should have played out a little more. Jeff definitely showed class after the match.

Beth and Candice was very sloppy, as you pointed out. I am starting to think that maybe its that particular pairing. Those two just don't seem to mesh well. The problem may be Beth. We all know that Candice isn't a performer that is going to look that great in the ring without some help. Beth on the other hand isn't exactly great at selling the opponant. This was the exact reason I thought WWE should have left the belt on Mickie and let Beth and Candice do their "personal" stuff in a separate program. These kinds of matchups are what makes it seem like women's wrestling in WWE is nonexistent most of the time. The only diva in WWE that is really over with the fans is Mickie, and they have her rotated out right now.

I was at the show live. The NW finally got some WWE love after almost two years of a drought. And the advertisements and Lillian let us all know that we're about to get a little more love. No Way Out will be in Seattle and the subsequent Smackdown/ECW taping is in Portland.
The dark match was a great little match between Carlito & Primo vs The Miz & Morrison. Carlito, Primo, and Morrison all had some good high spots. The crowd was really into it; Carlito and Primo both got high energy chants.
The crowd was into just about everything all night. Honestly, the "boring" chants were directed mostly at Cody Rhodes, Manu, and Ted Dibiase. The crowd was really into MVP.
Mostly, I believe, we were tolerant of JBL's post match segment, but I have to say that I was impressed with Batista's effort in the short match. He looked dominant and monster-like, and the effect would have been ruined with a longer match. At least, a match like that being longer with JBL.
I'm sure this is no surprise - the crowd went absolutely crazy each time 'Taker's gong rang. And that included during the pre-match video package! To my delight, I actually started one of the "Undertaker" chants during the match. We gave him a HUGE ovation as he stumbled to the back, too.
During the Michaels/Jericho match, the event staff had to keep telling folks to try and sit down - to no avail. We'd sit and something amazing would happen, and we'd be on our feet again. The belly to back onto the announce table was just sick, as was the Picture Perfect elbow that nicked the ladder as much as Jericho's chest. Each tumble from ladder to floor, or ring ropes was gasp-inducing. A great number of people around me were so into the story they were telling that, despite knowing better, we thought that Michaels was going to surprise everyone and win...
After the show was over on TV, they played HBK's music. He made his way to the back, looking dejected. Although, as I was right up near the entrance ramp, I saw something in his eyes denoting that he appreciated the rousing ovation the crowd accorded him.
I will be at RAW tonight. I'll let you know how it goes!

HBK-Jericho was amazing. I love how they skipped all the boring wrestling holds and just went from one spot to the next. It reminded me of an old fashioned ECW match. A total spot fest. I think it was the match of the year.
I liked it better then the ladder match Jericho and Benoit had at Mania a few years back.
JBL's promo after losing to Batista was absolutely hysterical. He had me cracking up.
I loved the Sgt. Slaughter cameo.

All I have to say is that the MVP face turn is slightly overdue, but I can't wait for it! I always say good heels become breakout faces!

Great final two matches, but at the end of the ladder match, did anyone see a glimpse of Benoit in Jericho on the entrance ramp? I dunno, it was just weird seeing him with his tooth, the blood, the smile and his hair. Creepy.

Hey 'Elevation', how was the Sarge involved at No Mercy?
Posted by: Mr. Eli | October 6, 2008 3:38 PM
Kev , dont be ashamed to say you almost watched NFL football instead of PPV !

Kevin,
So are you completely against Kozlov making his way into the title scene, or did you just not like him being inserted into the Hardy-HHH feud. I'll admit, having them interact with Kozlov as much or more than they did with each other in the build to the PPV didn't make a ton of sense from where I'm sitting.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I am not against Kozlov getting a push. I just wish the focus for Hardy's title shot would have been on Hardy.
Posted by: Rob | October 6, 2008 6:19 PM
Kevin, do you see what I'm talking about. I've said that the vote always gets the opposite results. Hardy won the vote, Triple H won the match. WWE's "swerves" by vote are still 100%.
The JBL promo was ruined by that terrible and awkward Cryme Tyme skit. Haha to that Bathroom break comment.

The WWE women's division has become odd lately.
Beth Phoenix had a better match with Candice at No Mercy than she did with Michelle McCool on Friday's Smackdown. It was also better than her match couple of weeks ago on Raw with Mickie James. This is despite Candice being the poorest wrestler out of those four.
Plus, McCool's two best matches in the last few months were with Maryse, despite McCool having matches with Beth and Natalya.

Regarding Jericho chipping a tooth. It makes me wonder why more guys don't use a mouth guard like Kurt Angle.

Mr Eli-
Sarge made a cameo appearance by jumping into JBL's limo with the divas and Cryme Tyme.
Posted by: Elevation | October 7, 2008 8:25 AM
I have to say I was impressed with No Mercy....everything made sense, and I am looking forward to MVP's face turn. If indeed that is what is going to happen.
Initially I was annoyed with the ending of Triple H vs Hardy. The pin reversal could have been a little more believable....and what i mean is a pin by Triple H that would have been harder to get out of. A little critical maybe, but that aside, the match was awesome and Kozlov's non-involvement was the right call - just seems strange, however, given Kozlov's interference in the next few weeks. Hardy's time will come.
If you missed Sgt Slaughter in Cryme Thyme's bit then shame on you...that little cameo made their appearance worthwhile. The Undertaker vs Big Show match did nothing for me at all, and I felt it was as bad as it was going to be.
Michaels vs jericho...what more can you say.....Absolutely fantastic

chris,
I will tell you this, because you may be the only guy as passionate about ladies wrestling as I am. I am almost to the point I wish they would just take all the divas off the show for a little while and let them all have a month or two to just work on "working" a match. Its obvious that not many of the female stars are able to flow from one opponant to the next without a lot of difficulty. The reason the division is disjointed is because they train particular pairings to carry the division for a certain amount of time. Once those two have finished their program, they have to develop a whole new chemistry between two new females. The difference between being able to wrestle and being a wrestler is the ability to be consistently good no matter who the opponant is.
Its my opinion that the only females in the WWE that can really work. They are Mickie, Melina, Victoria and Katie Lea. I used to think Beth would be ok, but unless she is doing squash matches, she really doesn't look very convincing anymore. Your champion really needs to be one of your best workers. Beth just isn't that person.

I was totally going to comment on the Jericho/Benoit similarities after last weeks Raw when he had the stubble going on and that intense yet slow delivery when he was with Adamle backstage. I didn't get to see NM, but I figured he'd have the tooth fixed for Raw based on all his other entertainment commitments. I figured the week before was just a subtle homage, but I'd say it's pretty full fledged now. I mean what kind of animal scratches, claws and bites? Could it be a rabid one?

Regarding Buscglia's comment, that's a good thought. Angle started using the mouth guard after he chipped a tooth during a 2005 match with John Cena.

I hated the Chris Jericho and HBK Match. How could Shawn let go away the belt like that. Common man! He should have been the new champ and Faced Batista as they had quite a lot of fued earlier when Ric Flair used to fight

Personally, I would give No Mercy a 5 out of 10 based on the other PPVs this year. I think that most of the matches were pretty predictable. I'm quite sick of JBL though. He's an old, washed up wrestler who is being played by WWE. I think that they need to either put him in a reasonable storyline or not re-sign him. I also thought that his little speech after his loss had an interesting slant on the bail-out. It's surprising that WWE put that much opinion into the little aside.
Posted by: Mike | October 8, 2008 7:05 PM
MIKE : finally someone agrees with me about JBL. - didn't care for him back when , don't care for him now . I never saw what the big deal was with him. It's time for him to stick to the stock market .
Posted by: the artist formerly known as jack in hebron | October 8, 2008 8:13 PM
I agree with Mike to an extent. I don't usually get excited about JBL, but I acknowledge that he knows what to do in his role. A few weeks ago, when he had a verbal exchange with CM Punk in the ring, Punk was getting booed. JBL then directed the heat to himself by claiming that everyone paid to see him. Granted, that might have been scripted for him.

hardy should of won that match
how long are they goin to make him wait it was bad enough they suspended him a week befor wrestlemania
Posted by: davy | October 10, 2008 2:59 PM
davy--man, if you owned a company, would you want the face of that company to be someone with a substance abuse problem. i thought that jeff hardy would win @ wrestlemania, and then begin programs with hhh, which would lead to his capture of the gold. but, with his recent issues, i just don't see that happening. makes the outcome of the match at no mercy, pretty predictable.
