WWE's most recent roster cuts

Most of the roster cuts WWE made today weren't a big surprise, but I do think the company could have done more with some of the talent. Here's a look at the five wrestlers (and one referee) who were released:

Stevie Richards: Richards certainly wasn't a guy who was going to headline pay-per-views or even get anywhere close to that level, but he did have value. I thought he could have been successful in a featured role on ECW after he cut that great interview six months ago when he talked about the neck injury he suffered in the original ECW and his multiple throat surgeries. Unfortunately, the angle was quickly dropped. Even if he wasn't going to have a significant spot on the show, he's a good worker and would have been a nice fit as a guy putting over the stars (I call it the Brad Armstrong position).

Colin Delaney: This is one I didn't see coming, because Delaney was in a prominent spot on ECW. However, the fact is that he never really got over in the underdog role and his heel turn was met with indifference. In other words, his turn on Tommy Dreamer wasn't exactly "Zbysko-Sammartino-esque" as color commentator Matt Striker said last week.

Robbie and Rory McAllister: The only surprise here is that it didn't happen sooner. Robbie was lucky to still be employed after he showed up on TV sitting in the crowd during a TNA taping last March. Despite being introduced with a series of vignettes, The Highlanders just never connected with the fans.

Cherry: The isn't a surprise, but it is unfortunate. When the Deuce and Domino act broke up, the writing probably was on the wall. Deuce is the only member of the group still with the company, as Domino was let go last week. I liked Cherry because she had a different look than the other divas, although I think that is ultimately what hurt her. While she is attractive, she does not have the bikini/fitness model looks that WWE prefers in its divas. She wasn't the greatest wrestler in the world, but the fans did seem to take to her as a shy and likable underdog.

Wes Adams: I don't have a strong opinion on this referee, but he apparently screwed up the finish of Matt Hardy and Mark Henry's win over John Morrison and The Miz Tuesday on ECW.

Hey Kevin,

Any chance you'll be covering the Mick Foley contract issue soon in your blog?
It seems to be a hot topic, especially with The Sun newspaper reporting Foley is going to TNA.
Thanks for reading.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Yeah, I'll probably post something soon.

I still think Richards Right to Censon gimmick was well done. There should have been a spot for him on the roster.

I may be in the minority but Cherry was very good looking. Again a new diva with a different look should have been able to stay

No real surprises there except Cherry. I really enjoyed her as she was inexperienced but improved. Unless they put Eve or an up-n-coming Diva, we won't see anymore 6 Diva matches (3 on 3).
As for the Highlanders, I saw them in the same light as the Bushwackers and I never really liked either team.
Colin Delaney just stunk and Stevie Richards I was a little surprised that he was let go and coming back from his injury I thaught he was getting in the flow of things.
They keep releasing people than there will not be an ECW.

I'm really disappointed to see Stevie Richards go. Say what you will about his position on the card, the guy was charasmatic and a good worker, not to mention one of the last remnants of the original ECW guys. I really think a mid-card program with him could've been a suprise sleeper fued.

I'm a little disappointed to see the Highlanders go, although it's nothing I'm going to lose sleep over. I really would have liked to see a more Scottish heritage angle with them, rather than the sitting in urinals angle.

I'll agree that Cherry wasn't, I guess mainstream attractive might be the best way to put it, and I do like seeing female wrestlers who don't fit the same old tired stereotypes, but I could not stand to watch Cherry in the ring. It'd be pretty hypocritical of me to rag on all these attractive women about not being able to work and just getting by on their looks and then turn around and praise Cherry just because of her unique looks.

The one plus to this is Colin Delaney. I don't even know where to start with that guy. It was like a complete rip-off of Mikey Whipwreck, his tights even looked like Mikey in his later years, and Delaney was nowhere near as likeable as Mikey. Plus, let's face it, he wasn't that great of a worker to begin with. I just hope WWE learns thier lesson and stays away from CHIKARA wrestlers in the future/

I will miss Cherry most of all, she was a very sexy woman. There are those of us that aren't attracted to the bikini models in WWE and prefer the more voluptuous types.

Chris Harris (Brayden Walker) was also released.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Yes, that happened a couple weeks ago. I did not address it on the blog (although I did talk about it on the Between The Ropes show, which can be heard at www.betweentheropes.com). It's pretty surprising that Harris' WWE run was so short-lived and underwhelming.

Also released last week were Nick Patrick, Shannon Moore, and Domino. You are probably aware of these.

I've always felt that the WWE seriously undervalued Stevie Richards' ability on the mic. Whether it was leading the BWO or the Right to Censor, Richards have demonstrated a gift for the gab and could have been used effectively as a mouthpiece for some of the talents which lack that talent, perhaps in a tag team combination, a mentor-prodigy relationship, manager or leader of a team.

WWE might as well have released The Highlanders after they were booked as fools for DX. No one is going to get over by having a fool made out of him.

Feel sorry for Stevie Richards, right to censor was a one of those good mid card storylines we just don't see anymore. I don't think he got any momentum when they took most of the humour out of his face persona, and he was a guy that by that stage nobody was really interested in booing.

After watching the Triple-H/Khali match for Summerslam, here's hoping Khali headlines the next round of roster cuts.

I did not see the HHH-Khali match at Summerslam, yet I too hope that Khali's career is next in line for the chopping block. WWE's big-man fetish can get a bit tiresome. True, Khali's promos have a degree of entertainment value, but when the bell rings, I would rather watch fifty-four-year-old Hacksaw Duggan.

Well, although Khali is a bore in the ring, it's really a shame how his life is going. I agree, his character is ultimately unentertaining and as time-filling as anything else. Apparently, they gave him the title shot and put him in the feud with HHH because his time with WWE is drawing to a close in the near future. His health, as it is with many big men in the business, is far below par and the body just can't take it anymore. They are expected to lose him in the near future, and are trying to sqeak anything they can out of him before he goes. Now I'm not 100% sure about this, but it definitely sounds plausible to me. Btw, I don't mean he's going to die, I'm just saying he's not able to wrestle anymore. On another note, his match at Summerslam with Triple H was much more entertaining than it should have been. So I definitely give him kudos for that.

Cherry was a sweetie and should not have been released, just because she looked like an ordinary woman and not an anorexic model.

Hi, I know my question is not exactly on topic...but I am wondering, and I am posing this question inteliigently, what is the future of the WWE?

Maybe it is just me, but there really do not seem to be any or I should say there seem to be very few "characters" nowadays, too many wrestlers, too many plain wrestlers at that, and too many titles belts.

A lot of it just seems plain diluted and formulaic. How long am I supposed to put up with announcers feigning excitement? What is with all this crossover between wrestling 'leagues", it just makes things more complicated than they need to be and just kills allegiances to a particular league.

Why did they reduce tag teams to filler material, some of the greatest wrestlers and greatest matches of all time came from tag teams, now tag team matches are reduced to two guys they randomly slap together because they happen to have a dispute at the beginning of the show and oh no, how will they ever get along? Or two lower tier guys that really matter a hill of beans to the WWE.

I know my comments are unusually long but I am just searching for the WWE's direction, there were so many great "characters" especially in the 80s, through to the early 2000s, but now yikes, the recent draft they had is just proof that WWEis getting a bit stale, at least in my opinion. Is this all there is ever going to be from WWE?

I mean they have resorted to giving away money, so clearly they must be searching for ratings.

Is it about time the WWE resorts to "real" matches? Would they ever even do that? At least then that no-namer would really have a chance against one of the manufactured big dogs. (i.e. John Cena...why is he interesting? Fine his hand wave in front of the face is cool and funny but otherwise, yawn)
