SummerSlam preview

Predictions for tonight’s WWE pay-per-view:

Edge vs. The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match: These guys have had four epic matches on pay-per-view, so this one has a lot to live up to. I think they’ll pull it off. As great as this feud has been, I don’t think you can take it any further after a TLC match and a Hell in a Cell, so this should be the climax. I can’t imagine The Undertaker not winning his specialty match, just as Edge won his.

Batista vs. John Cena: There are several possible scenarios here, and I honestly have no idea how this one is going to go down. There is a chance that one of them could turn heel (it would be great if it was Cena, but I strongly doubt it), but I also can envision a clean winner and a post-match handshake. And then there is the Randy Orton factor. A number of people believe the story on wwe.com about Orton breaking his collarbone again in a motorcycle accident is a work and that he will do a run-in in this match, which will result in an inconclusive finish. I don’t know about all that, but since I don’t have a strong opinion on a winner, I’ll go with a double disqualification.

WWE champion Triple H vs. The Great Khali: Khali will probably dominate early, but Triple H will rally, hit the Pedigree and slay the giant (who should be used to being slain by now).

World heavyweight champion CM Punk vs. JBL: Punk seems to gradually be building momentum as champion, and he needs a clean win here to keep it going. I believe he’ll get it. The other possible scenario is that Punk gains a “fluke” victory and the two have a rematch at Unforgiven next month. Either way, I don’t see JBL getting the belt at this point.

ECW champion Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy: I think it’s too early to take the title off Henry. With some outside interference from Tony Atlas, Henry retains the championship.

Jeff Hardy vs. MVP: With yesterday’s report about Hardy being injured, it will be interesting to see if this match even takes place. Assuming it does, I think MVP will win after Hardy misses a high-risk maneuver (possibly from a distraction by Shelton Benjamin). That would keep the program going and possibly lead to a triple threat match. Plus, it fits with what MVP has been saying about Hardy’s reckless style being his undoing.

Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix in a Winner Take All match: I have a feeling that Marella and Phoenix are going to be your next Intercontinental and WWE women’s champions, respectively. I expect Phoenix to do most of the work and score the pin on James, and then after the match Marella does his over-the-top marching band celebration.

Shawn Michaels' announcement: I’m guessing that Michaels will put on his “I’ve lost my smile” face and act like he’s going to retire, prompting Chris Jericho to come out and add insult to injury. Michaels then pulls a swerve and super-kicks Jericho out of nowhere.

Comments

My only difference here is that Cena wins tonight, and that Mickie and Kofi hang onto their belts.

WWE now has 3 strong mixed gender duos running around which could either be interesting, or really stupid, I'm just not sure.

The whole Orton interference aspect would be terrible if it is THIS predictable, maybe he'll interfere in somthing other than Cena/Batista. Hopefully we'll get superswerved and he'll attack Trips or somthing instead and switch brands.

I bet Santino becomes women's champ.

For SummerSlam tonight, I expect Triple H to put Khali over, while Taker just about beats Edge.
This would then set up Khali / Taker and Triple H / Edge programmes for forthcoming PPV's.
Taker will eventually win the title and move back into a programme against Edge after Hunter puts him over.
Edge will then win the title and that will set up Edge and Triple H in Wrestlemania...where you guessed it Triple H wins the title again.

Kevin, I agee with most of your predictions and I too feel that Randy Orton will re-appear tonight except I feel it will be during Triple H/Khali's match not Batista/Cena match.

Triple H won the belt from Randy Orton plus it was during a match with Triple H that his collarbone was broken so I think he'll try to cause Triple H to lose the belt tonight. His interference will cause Khali to win but due to disqualification Triple H will retain the belt.

I like reading your PPV predictions, and decided to throw my own .02 cents in on the matches. :-)

Here goes:

Edge vs. The Undertaker in a Hell in a

Cell match: Like you said, this will be the main event, and showstopping match of the night. Hopefully Edge ends up having some TLCs stashed under the ring, to add a new dimension to the Hell in a Cell type match. I think/hope that near the end of the match, there will either be interference from Mick Foley, or a masked Kane, along the lines of the Kane interference from the very first Hell in a Cell match, where UT had basically won the match, but then Kane interrupted. A run in by a masked Kane could also facilitate a switch to Raw by UT, though I haven't read anything about something like that in the works. He's been on Smackdown! for awhile. Maybe a change would be good.

Batista vs. John Cena: I'm a big Batista fan, but I'm not overly enthused about this match, the way it stands now. Hopefully they add a big twist to the match, with someone turning heel. Ideally, I'd love to see Cena turn, with CT coming out to help with a beat down. I can see Cena getting the pin, with a re-match at Unforgiven. If Cena wins, and stays face, I could see Batista turning heel in a re-match at Unforgiven.

WWE champion Triple H vs. The Great Khali: I pretty much agree with what you already said, regarding how the match will go. Not a very compelling match. Would be nice to see a run in by someone to set up Triple H's next feud, but I imagine they'll hold that off until Smackdown.

World heavyweight champion CM Punk vs. JBL: This match should go on early, to get it out of the way and over with before it kills the momentum of the rest of the show. JBL's a great heel commentator, but I don't find his in ring wrestling compelling at all. Only thing that would make this match noteworthy, would be a run in by Randy Orton near the end, or even a masked Kane (if he doesn't do a run in for Hell in a Cell). I think CM Punk still leaves with the belt.

ECW champion Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy: I also agree that it's too early to take the belt off of Henry. Need to keep building his championship credibility so that when Hardy finally wins it, it will be more worthwhile.

Jeff Hardy vs. MVP: I agree, MVP will probably end up getting the win because Hardy goes for an over the top move, then crashes and burns. I could see Benjamin causing a distraction outside the ring, or I could also see Benjamin running into Hardy in the back, before the match, and telling him that he thinks MVP is right about him, etc., and thus agitating Hardy. This will lead to a confrontation involving the 3 of them during the Smackdown taping, maybe during MVPs VIP Lounge segment, to set up a Triple Threat at Unforgiven.

Kofi Kingston and Mickie James vs. Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix in a Winner Take All match: I don't care for Marella AT ALL, but I agree it will probably more interesting if they won the belts, rather than James and Kingston keeping them. That, or Marella could make an idiotic decision and cost Phoenix the match. Either way, I think the fans will look like cardboard cut outs sitting in their seats for this match. Hopefully it's quick and painless.

Shawn Michaels' announcement: I thought about the "I've lost my smile" incident, too. :-) I think HBK will come out, and emotionally announce that being able to see his wife and children with both of his eyes, is more important to him than anything else. Afterwards, Jericho will probably confront him, telling him he's doing the right thing, but throwing a "coward" insult in at the end. HBK will think about doing something, but try walking away. Jericho or Cade will end up jumping HBK and a slight brawl will ensue. This will fuel a match at Unforgiven, ala HBK getting out of his wheelchair to come back and face Triple H years ago.

It is put up or shut up time for CM Punk. Either give him a clean victory tonight or take the title off of him.

Thoughts Kev on the confirmation that Mick Foley is headed to TNA and Sid Vicious is returning to WWE?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I'll save that for a future blog entry.

I think it's pretty obvious Santino & Beth win, but that Beth walks away with the IC belt and forces Santino to hold the women's championship.

Wow Kevin,
You were pretty accurate with your predictions. You either have great intuition, or have been watching wrestling way too long :-)

I really enjoy your articles, keep up the great work
