It’s all about the wrestling on Smackdown

If you’re of the opinion that there’s too much “sports entertainment” on wrestling shows these days and not enough wrestling, I hope you caught Smackdown last night.

There was an Undertaker-Vickie Guerrero angle sprinkled throughout the show, but the main focus was on the action in the ring, highlighted by two outstanding matches – Jeff Hardy versus MVP, and Triple H versus Shelton Benjamin.

I don’t know that WWE would want to do a show this wrestling-heavy every week, but it was a nice change of pace. With a quintet of talented workers competing in the Championship Scramble at the Unforgiven pay-per-view on Sept. 7, there is no better way to sell that match than to showcase the wrestling skills of the participants.

Benjamin looked especially strong last night, even though he lost to Triple H. Earlier in the show, he laid out both Hardy and MVP after Hardy’s victory. Then, after doing the job in a hard-fought, back-and-forth match, Benjamin got his heat back by knocking out Triple H with a belt shot to the head.

Other thoughts on last night’s show:

The Brian Kendrick, the only wrestler in the Scramble who did not have a match last night, cut his best promo since adopting his new persona. He and Ezekiel were sitting in the back reading. Kendrick quoted The Art of War and talked about the fine line between genius and insanity. This was the first time that I saw a touch of Brian Pillman in Kendrick. …

Hardy took a nasty spill, landing on his head and neck, during his match against MVP. I’ve seen him have bad landings like that before, and it always amazes me that he hasn’t suffered a serious injury. Jim Ross called him “The Rubberband Man.” …

I don’t understand the purpose of having The Great Khali attack Triple H after his match with Benjamin. Khali isn’t in the Scramble, so it’s not like it’s going to help sell the pay-per-view. Perhaps it was done to make Triple H seem banged up heading into Unforgiven, theoretically increasing the likelihood that he will lose the WWE title. …

I think R-Truth is going to get over in WWE, but his debut could have been booked better. I see now why Vince McMahon reportedly was furious with how this match was laid out. Kenny Dykstra, who the fans consider a joke at this point, got in far too much offense against a guy that figures to be getting a big push. …

Victoria has been reduced to putting over women making their debut, as she jobbed to Brie Bella last night. For those who don’t know, I won’t give it away, but there is something unique about Bella’s gimmick that warrants a push. …

Maryse, who teamed with Natalya to defeat Michelle McCool and Maria, is starting to look more comfortable in the ring and she’s getting better at being a heel. McCool, by the way, should either carry the belt to the ring or gain about 20 pounds so that it fits around her waist. …

I like Jesse and Festus, but I really don’t need to see them wrestle Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder anymore. Of course, the sole purpose of this match was for The Big Show to come out and destroy everyone. Hopefully, WWE is planning on doing something meaningful with him soon.

I liked how heavy on wrestling the show was (a little less than half of the show minus commericials).

Maryse does a great job of playing the stuck up snob.

The Brian Kendrick was Awesome. I am from Argentina and in the "International" version of SD!, his promo was cut(and its has no sense because it were only 3 minutes and he is part of a title match at Unforgiven). But I checked later and he is slowly becoming my main reason to watch SD!.

I am also shocked because I don't know when I started to like MVP. he is solid in the Mic, entertaining in the ring, and now has a good and threatening finisher.

Check this: Just when Zek told to Kendrick "6th century BC", he turns the page on his book. And if you are nerd enough (hi,my name is gaston), you can realize that Zek was reading a book of Dr Seuss. Green Eggs and Ham.
Yes, that huge black dude was reading a book for 4 to 8 years old children.
And you realize that just when he says "6th century BC".
I know it was a bit difficult to catch, but it was hilarious.
That book wasn't picked by accident.

Great post Kevin.

"I don’t understand the purpose of having The Great Khali attack Triple H after his match with Benjamin. Khali isn’t in the Scramble, so it’s not like it’s going to help sell the pay-per-view."

Hmmm. I thought it was revenge for HHH interfering in Khali's scramble qualifying match. Could it actually be an angle that lasts more than 3-4 weeks - y'know, past the next PPV?

Gawd, in a way I really hope not.

I agree completely that the Hardy/MVP and Benjamin/HHH matches were stellar ( although I found it odd how easily HHH got Benjamin into a pedigree after HE was distracted by Khali).
Is it just me, or does the booking on this show almost feel like it's laying the seeds for the PPV after Unforgiven? Having 2 weeks straight of Khali/HHH interplay when they aren't facing off at Unforgiven gives me the feeling we'll see these 2 again in a title match ( unfortunately). And the Benjamin run-in during the Hardy/MVP match suggests a triple threat US title match after Unforgiven.

Kev - what's your take on The Big Show. The way he talked on the mic made him come across as a heel, but it seems that anyone who opposes Vickie becomes the most loved man on Smackdown. How do you see the situation playing out?

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I originally thought Show would go heel, but I'm liking him as a babyface. He just needs a story line.

hey Kevin. Did you notice that Ezekiel was actually reading a Dr. Seuss book? It was hilarious that he answered Kendrick's question about when the art of war was written while reading the cat in the hat.

RESPOSNE FROM KEVIN ECK: You guys are amazing. I didn't notice it. I will g back and look at it. That's pretty funny.

Those matches with the scramble participants were great. In only two hours, Benjamin was really established as a legitimate force. Even in losing clean, he was put over big time. MVP and Hardy also had a great match in which neither guy lost anything.

Let me get this straight, they spent two months with well crafted vignettes putting over R-Truth as a tough guy from the streets who has learned from his mistakes, only to have him come out smiling and dancing like a clown? I'm sure that makes perfect sense to somebody.

Vickie Guerrero was phenomenal in her role as a calculating, cold, evil genius. But now for no real good reason, first with Edge and now with Taker, she's been reduced to a scared, screaming shell of what she was in short order. What happened to the woman that would use her power to destroy those that opposed her? She has a unique character that was more over than ever imaginable, now she's indistinguishable from any blonde bimbo in a Freddy or Jason movie. Perhaps next week they'll show her running from the Undertaker only to trip over her own feet.

Did anyone else notice that Ezekiel was reading The Cat in the Hat during Brian Kendrick's promo? I thought that was a nice touch.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that the HHH-Shelton match was outstanding, but it was better than 95% of what I have seen from HHH in recent times, so I did enjoy it.

I just don't see the problem with R-Truth's debut. Yes, Dykstra scored some offense, but, at least to my eyes, he didn't dominate the match. Kenny appeared no stronger than Santino did against Rey Mysterio on Raw a few weeks ago, and that was a clown-versus-former-world-champion match.

Benjamin/HHH was one of the better matches I've seen on Smackdown of late. THe Khali thing kind of ruined it a bit though. Didn't see the rest of the show.

Other than the two big matches, I thought SD was boring. I didn't like either of the women's matches and worse, Vickie has become boring. Vickie and Edge WERE Smackdown, but this new direction is awful. They had a good thing going with her and it seems very lost. I still have no clue why the WWE gave the Tag belts to Hawkins and Ryder, as they have zero charisma in my book plus they haven't done anything since winning the belts.

I am shocked that people think Cena, Batista and HHH, all do the same old tired shtick, but Taker is looked at as a genius when he hasn't done anything original with his character in years. Taker should go heel or "marry" Vickie because his "coming for your soul" bit is getting old.

It seems to me that they are heavily pushing Big Show/Khali interference in the championship scramble.

Big Show had a serious hand affecting matches involving all of the title contenders, while HHH has been involved with Khali. I think they both interfere in the match thus negating the other's attempts and therefore leading to another epic Big Show/Khali feud.

(ok the "epic" part was sarcasm)

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention enough, but I didn't notice anything about this Bella chick. I couldn't find anything about her gimmick on any of the dirt sheets either. What were you referring to Kevin??

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I don't want to spoil it.

Below are my Predictions

WWE Championship Scramble : Triple H will win
World Heavyweight Championship Scramble : Batista will win
Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho : HBK will beat the shit out of Chris Jericho
Mark Henry vs Matt Hardy vs Chavo Guerrero vs The Miz vs Finlay in the Championship Scramble for the ECW Championship : Matt Hardy will win

do you think that the bellas committed a switch when she went under the ring?

Here is my explanation: I am a biased Undertaker fan. If you accuse me of being biased against Cena and HHH, then you are 100% correct. I actually don't mind Big Dave, except when he wrestles Kane...

Also, where is the best wrestler in the business(EDGE). Did he get injured?
Would'nt it be great if he and taker teamed up becausew of their hate of vickie.Wierd, but great.

if u want the info behind the bellas, check out wikipedia , i know Kev doesn't want to spoil it , but if you really want to know , you should check it out
