Dirt Sheet not ready for prime time
I’ve been hearing for a while now how funny John Morrison and The Miz’s Dirt Sheet segments are on wwe.com. It got to the point where I considered checking it out for myself, but I just couldn’t get past my anti-Miz bias.
Last night, I finally got to see what I’ve been missing, as The Dirt Sheet made its television debut on ECW. For those of you who are Dirt Sheet fans, please tell me that the segments on wwe.com are funnier than the lame stuff that I saw last night.
In addition to the material not being funny, it also wasn’t original, as Matt Hardy pointed out. For those who were lucky enough to have missed it, the segment was a copy of a Conan O’Brien bit in which a still photo of someone is shown with the mouth cut out and someone else’s mouth moves in its place (Hardy, Mark Henry, Tony Atlas and Lena Yada were the ones being lampooned). For the record, I’m not a big Conan O’Brien fan either.
It concluded with Henry and Hardy – who will face each other at SummerSlam for Henry’s ECW title – taking out Morrison and Miz. I presume this will lead to Henry and Hardy facing Morrison and Miz in a tag team match next week.
It’s just too bad that Morrison and Miz aren’t WWE tag team champs anymore, or else WWE could do the totally original angle of SummerSlam adversaries winning the tag team title.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
Matt Striker did a really good job as color commentator filling in for Tazz. In fact, I think he was significantly better than Tazz. Striker is very articulate and he knows his wrestling history, too. I loved it when he referred to the Colin Delaney/Tommy Dreamer relationship as “Zbyszko-Sammartino-esque.” Although he plays a heel character, Striker was pretty neutral in his commentary.
No reason was given as to why Tazz wasn’t there, but he actually did the color commentary for the Smackdown taping because Mick Foley was selling his injuries from last week’s angle with Edge. It has been reported that Foley’s contract is expiring at the end of the summer and that he might not re-sign. If that were to happen, I’d love to see Striker get a shot on Smackdown. Tazz is better-suited for ECW. …
I like what I’m seeing from Evan Bourne and Ricky Ortiz. By this time next year, I bet the high-flying Bourne will be on Raw or Smackdown. Ortiz isn’t nearly as good in the ring as Bourne, but he stands out because of his look and quirky charisma. …
Braden Walker (formerly Chris Harris in TNA) is not exactly taking WWE by storm. I’m hoping that the lack of fanfare for his debut, his bland wrestling attire and the fact that Hardy didn’t know his name last week are part of an angle. Looking at Walker and former tag-team partner James Storm now, it’s hard to believe that Walker was considered by most to be the one with more star potential.

Comments
It appears to me that Boring Walker is the but of Vince McMahon's TNA jabs. One of the announcers last night said that Walker "made an iMPACT!". Last week, Matt Hardy said Walker was a "real wildcat," recalling Walker's days as "Wildcat Chris Harris."

The Dirt Sheet is much funnier on WWE.com, you should check out the ones where they hold a seance along with Mike Adamle, where they go into The Matrix to beat up The Big Show and the legendary Batmiz with Morrison as The Joker. I just had a feeling it really wouldn't transfer well live on TV.

There have been funnier episodes of The Dirt Sheet but last night got some reaction out of the crowd which was tens times better than the almost audible boring chants you could hear during the Braden Walker match. I'm not sure why WWE put that on last but I'd rather the show had ended with a match rather than that segment, just didn't do it for me and I'm sure it didn't do it for anybody in the actual arena.
I loved Matt Striker on commentary and it was entertaining.
Maybe it's because it was my first time seeing Ortiz but I seriously thought Carlito had grew in size and his afro became wilder when I saw him. I guess he needs to change how he looks so people wont make that misconception when they first see him. Big fan of Evan Bourne and he's a great replacement since Kofi got drafted to RAW. He's gonna be a great addition to one of the main rosters and hopefully because of his size and the way he wrestles, it'd give WWE the idea to brign back the Cruiserweight belt or something. But if not, U.S. or I.C. title shots will suffice.

Miz I can understand, but no love for Conan O'Brien?!?! He may not be 11:30 ready yet (still believe NBC's gonna miss those Leno ratings) but man is comic gold. Eh, to each his own.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I know I might be in the minority on O'Brien. I was a big Letterman fan in the 80s and 90s.

Evan Bourne is the only reason I bother with ECW anymore. I am pleased to see him booked so strong in the short time he's been on the show. I have never anythign like that roll-up he pulled off on Bam Neely last night. He wrestled for ROH under the name Matt Sydal for a few years. I can't wait to see his potential develop into stardom.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: He actually wrestled briefly as Mat Sydal in WWE before getting the name change.

My brother and I usually talk about how your take on events in WWE usually mirrors our own viewpoints, but in regards to the Dirt Sheet, wow, we'll have to disagree on that. I think Miz and Morrison (as a tag team and Morrison's character especially) are maybe the best thing going in all of WWE right now, definitely on ECW. I thought there were a lot of good lines in that segment last night. Of course, I'm also a Conan O'Brien fan.

I saw one of the Dirt Sheet's on a recommendation from my friend where Miz and Morrison did their version of the Dark Knight in 2 minutes, punctuated by Morrison saying "Suck that, Santino," which was golden since Santino did a Dark Knight spoof on his Casa.
I didn't really know what to expect out of it on TV. Didn't come across very strong, but that's because Miz and Morrison on TV have been relatively serious, cocky heels while the Dirt Sheet is just them goofing off and doing a comedy routine. They aren't Edge and Christian and will never be that great. I wish they would just carry the tag belts and be great at that or Morrison breaks off and feuds for the ECW strap with Hardy.

I'm guessing Tazz wasn't there since he filled in for Mick Foley on Smackdown and they want to keep up the "illusion" that ECW and Smackdown take place on separate nights, even though most people already know otherwise. That being said, Striker was great on commentary, it's like he's been doing it for years. He's definitely underutilized by the company and this was a prime example. I'm sure if Foley leaves, which I think he will, Tazz will get the Smackdown nod since it's the higher profile show and he's the bigger "name".
Even though it's the third rate show by far, at least some effort has been put into it the last few weeks to make it a solid show. Beginning with the show that featured the fatal four way a few weeks back, which could very well be the TV match of the year, ECW has put together a nice string of solid shows. There hasn't or won't be much in the way of groundbreaking television, but at least the show isn't treated like a complete afterthought these days.

The Dirt Sheet is pretty good on wwe.com, but last nite...ugh. Then again they had to work with matt hardy and and mark henry...you try getting those guys over!
as for your Miz hatred...he's doing exactly what he's suppose to be doing and that's why you hate him. he's the 2008 version of brutus beefcake (which makes John Morrison somehow a skinnier Greg Valentine?)
the miz truly appreciates your hatred.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I understand your point about Miz, but there is a difference between a heel who generates the kind of heat that makes you want to pay to see him get his butt kicked, and one who just makes you want to turn the channel. For me, The Miz is the latter.

I was personally ecstatic when I heard Harris had signed a contract with WWE. I was certain they would bring in Chris as a no-nonsense Hart/Benoit type wrestler - the Wildcat gimmick was basically that, anyway... sigh. I hope he survives, he was my favourite on TNA back when he was on the brink of a good singles push. Shame he isn't in shape right now. Well, at least "R-Truth" seems to get a real shot at it.
In terms of the Dirt Sheet, there's still something wrong with Morrison's tone of voice, in my mind, something that makes him feel "off" in a way where he is trying too hard to be rugged & tough with a voice that is simply unsuited for such delivery. It makes him come off as childish and whiny - largely the same thing as with Samoa Joe on TNA: Unsuited delivery. Don't they have vocal coaches? :D
Don't know what to make of the rest, though... Bourne is different in the ring, all right, but he also absolutely needs more promo time fast. Who doesn't, though?

It is unfortunate that things don't seem to be working out for Braden Walker. My only suggestion to salvage the situation is that he turn heel and lash out at the fans for not appreciating no-nonsense wrestling skills. And I am the first to admit that such an angle has already been done.
If Jerry is right about McMahon using Walker as the butt of TNA jabs, then the chairman has a strange way of encouraging TNA talent to jump ship.

Hey Kevin, are you going to make it down to Salisbury this weekend for the WWE event on Sunday? I'm going and it would be cool to see a WWE show in a smaller market/arena like Salisbury.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I'm not going to make it to that one.

Hey Eck,
The Dirt Sheet has had some very funny moments, but in my opinion they all been thanx to John Morrison. Like you, I have a block against the Miz.
I'm glad they finally put Hardy and MVP on the card for SS. If they will just now put Jericho, THE brian kendrick, Morrison and Kennedy on the card somewhere and build it up, it should make up for the 3 lousy title matches (meaning Khali, Henry and JBL) Jericho and Punk could have had a great match. I guess now that I'm a 30+ year old wrestling fan, watching a good match is more important in my book than all the other stuff. I also hope that after hardy has his run with the ECW title, they move him back to raw. He'd have some good matches with Cena, Batista, Jericho and Shawn Micheals.
I'd love to see a Kendrick / Morrison feud for SS or at least some time later. It would be a great match and it would be interesting to see who the crowd gets behind. I'd cheer for both.

I agree that Bourne is one of the best and most exciting in ring performers in the ECW but his mike skills suck so bad that The Great Khali almost comes off as a genius interview!

Solomon, Morrison's voice changed when he switched to the John Morrison gimmick. He's imitating Jim Morrison's speaking voice, and he's not half bad at it. If you go back and listen to one of his promos as Johnny Nitro, you'll hear the difference.

You are right - that gag was done ham handedly and in arguably poor taste.
No Conan??? He is responsible for the very best Simpsons episodes and the few good SNL skits from back in the day.

matt striker was the nuts as colour commentator on ecw. if mick foley leaves smackdown which i hope he does not, matt should get the gig, if not, matt should get todd grishams old job.

Kevin you do great work and I enjoy reading the blog. In my opinion, Ricky Ortiz is awful. Awful, awful, awful. There wasn't a match that he had in OVW (as Atlas DaBone) that I didn't fast forward through. The fact that he is on the ECW roster and Colt Cabana is not speaks volumes about the WWE. Then again, when Flex Cabana lost a loser leaves town match in Memphis to Jerry Lawler I figured he was quitting wrestling to sell cars. Never ever ever would I have guessed he would become a huge star as The Rock.

while i do feel bad that Chris Harris is gone, i think it was only time before it happened anyway, look at all the former TNA stars that appeared on WWE, Kaz fired after a month for not refusing to cut his hair, Monty Brown left to take care of his niece after his sister died, and I'm sure there are a couple more but i just hope Ron Killings has a better second time around in the WWE, I just wish they would get smart and fire a guy like Batista who has no wrestling skills no mic skills all he is, a chiesled body from steriods.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Firing Batista would be anything but smart. No matter what you think of his skills, he is one of WWE's biggest stars.
