Cena injury opens Scramble spot for Mysterio

Hours before Raw went on the air last night, reports that John Cena had suffered a neck injury were all over the Internet. WWE later stated that Cena needs surgery to repair a herniated disk and “will be out of action indefinitely.”

With Cena out, it was announced that Rey Mysterio would take his place in the Championship Scramble for the world heavyweight title at the Unforgiven pay-per-view on Sept. 7, joining champion CM Punk, Batista, JBL and Kane. Because Mysterio’s in-ring style is so different from Cena’s, his presence changes the complexion of the match. Undoubtedly, there will be more high spots and, at times, a quicker pace. Plus, Mysterio has a personal issue with Kane.

Cena’s injury, coupled with Randy Orton reportedly being out another three months, leaves Raw without two of its top stars. This is Cena’s second major injury in the past 10 months. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle in October and returned ahead of schedule at The Royal Rumble in January.

The specifics of Cena’s injury are unclear at this point, but neck problems in wrestling can often be the result of a cumulative effect rather than one incident. On Raw it was portrayed that Cena got hurt during his match with Batista at SummerSlam on Aug. 17. In an interview on Raw, Batista put over Cena’s toughness and wished him well. You can never take things at face value in wrestling story lines, so it’s possible that Batista’s reaction was planting the seeds for a feud with Cena when he comes back.

Other thoughts on last night’s show:

Was it my imagination, or did I actually hear people cheer the fact that Cena was injured? …

As expected, Shawn Michaels announced that he was coming back to get revenge on Chris Jericho at Unforgiven. Also as expected, the verbal confrontation between these two was tremendous. As soon as Jericho’s face came up on the Titantron, he got major heat from the crowd. And speaking of Jericho’s face, his sour expression during the segment was awesome. I am really looking forward to seeing them go at it, but I think the story line could have been even more compelling if WWE had pushed back their match until No Mercy in October.

Cena’s injury gave WWE a perfect opportunity to place Jericho in the Championship Scramble. It could have set up a scenario in which Jericho appears to have the title won, but Michaels – who would have been off TV since SummerSlam – shows up out of nowhere and costs him the match. …

The opening match between Punk and JBL was very good. I especially liked the near fall on the Clothesline from Hell. Fans are clearly starting to believe in Punk. As for JBL, people have been very critical of his in-ring performances, but he held up his end last night. He admittedly had ring rust and was out of shape (not to mention banged up) when he first returned, but he has gradually gotten better. …

When Raw general manager Mike Adamle announced that Cena’s replacement in the Scramble was a former world champion, I thought for a second that he was going to say it was Sid Vicious. …

The Batista-Kane main event was a little slow-moving, but that’s to be expected when these two wrestle each other. The match was effective in helping the build for the pay-per-view. …

Kane cut a good promo, but it would have been even better if there was more of a story behind his program with Mysterio. …

I liked the Kelly Kelly-Beth Phoenix match. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are going to say how much of a travesty it is that Kelly got the pin, but I’m not one of them. Kelly is getting better every week, and the way she won – with a rollup after Santino Marella inadvertently distracted Phoenix – was believable because the match had been competitive up to that point. The bloody nose Phoenix suffered during the match, while an accident, also helped convey that Kelly is tougher than she looks.

Of course, the main reason for Kelly’s win was to add a twist to the Glamarella story line. When Phoenix started punching Marella, at first I thought: “Dissension already? Who booked this, Vince Russo?” Then I remembered that Russo doesn’t work for WWE. It became clear that the couple would reconcile before the end of the show, and the angle was just establishing how quirky and dysfunctional they are. …

It’s nice that the announcers finally are putting over Marella as a threat in the ring despite his goofy personality. …

I won’t go so far as to say that Adamle is doing a good job in his role as GM, but his delivery and facial expressions during backstage segments are getting better. …

I don’t want to judge Primo Colon too harshly after just one match, but with his non-descript look and 1970s-era babyface mannerisms, he’s going to have a difficult time getting over. I guess with his brother Carlito being on Smackdown (he is still with the company, isn’t he?), there’s little chance of a brother vs. brother feud. …

Charlie Haas was pretty funny wrestling and cutting a promo as “Charlito.” Maybe Haas’ new gimmick will be doing impersonations, sort of like The Big Show did years ago. At this point, Haas should try anything. …

Why were the fans chanting “USA” when Hacksaw Jim Duggan and partner Jerry Lawler were wrestling Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes? Are Mississippi and Georgia no longer part of the U.S.? …

Just when I was starting to warm up to Cryme Tyme (who will no longer get the rub from Cena), they go and ruin it by bringing back the “Money, money, yeah, yeah” catch phrase. The crowd was into it at first last night, but JTG and Shad Gaspard kept repeating the phrase long after the fans stopped playing along. I think that was one of the most annoying segments I have seen since Sharmell and William Regal repeated “All Hail King Booker” about a thousand times.

"Why were the fans chanting “USA” when Hacksaw Jim Duggan and partner Jerry Lawler were wrestling Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes?"

Because Hacksaw started the chant. You know us rasslin fans - we just foller da leader.

Yes, Carlito is still employed! I was surprised too when I went to an ECW/Smackdown house show in Canton, Ohio on Sunday and he came out. He's got a new hairdo (corn rows) and new sporty looking pants instead of his little trunks. He's still jobbing though, this time to R Truth (who looked great and the crowd loved).

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: My remark about him still being in the company was an attempt at sarcasm. And I have heard about his new look, which to me is a mistake, because his hair was his calling card.

I have to agree with you on perhaps delaying the Jericho/Michaels feud until one more pay-per-view. Obviously fans want to see these two tear into each other, but how much more would Shawn have been boiling over and the tension had build if Jericho had refused the challenge? He could have claimed Shawn should not then have retired or he's already beaten him up enough or something else. Why does a wrestler always have to accept another's challenge?

I keep trying to defend WWE Raw fans but it's getting harder and harder. You're exactly right that fans cheered Cena's injury. Disgusting.

Many of them were also silly in their responses. The USA chants are a vestige of the Cold War that Duggan should have retired during the first Bush presidency but hey, it's the only way he gets a pop so...

Finally, Cryme Tyme is an awful face team. Not only do they steal, they have virtually no mic skills, no exciting, named finisher and no sense of their audience. Yet since fans are told they should be cheered, they get cheered.

Sheep, sheep, sheep.

Cumulative effect you say? The dude was there for months on end headlining PPV after PPV and never had any significant time off. This is nothing new. Anyone ever hear of Stone Cold Steve Austin? Austin is the end result of this kind of murderous schedule. As much as I love the WWE, the schedule these guys have and the way they are asked to wrestle will often cut short their careers. You can blame Mick Foley and the original ECW for the ramped up violence that has pushed pro wrestling into dangerous territory.

I have often heard people complain about the Rock and how he has lost touch with his roots. I disagree. Dwayne Johnson had the good sense to get out of wrestling when he had the chance for the simple fact that wrestling itself has lost touch with its roots. Many pro wrestling fans have lost touch with the human side of this sport. The fact that you did hear applause for John Cena's injury is proof that there is a growing population of WWE fans that are just mindless brain dead fools. They expect these wrestlers to destroy their bodies solely for their amusement. The least these fans can do is show these performers a little appreciation for their efforts, but placing that expectation on "these fans" is a waste of time.

Maybe Chris Jericho has a point...

How does Rey Mysterio get a title shot after not having wrestled since February? I think Kofi Kingston, despite losing two matches recently (although he wasn't involved in the decision at Summerslam and was screwed out of a win last night) should have been given Cena's spot. Then Rey could have been the one to do a run-in during the Championship Scramble and cost Kane the title.

"Charlito" was hilarious!

"He spits in the face of people who look like mules"

i laughed so hard that my sister called my mom and told her i was losing it.

I read this blog way too much. Because when Cryme Tyme started the "Money Money..." chant, I was thinking, Somewhere Kevin Eck, is struggling not to change the channel. Since the WWE do not care about the tag belts, I am still waiting for Cryme Tyme to auction off the belts to people in the crowd.

I think you are right on the money with holding Jericho/Michaels till October. I think Jericho is a bonafide main eventer, who is percieved as a mid carder. he needs some Main event love.

I saw a promo for an upcoming ECW scramble. Isn't that just a tad bit of overkill. I mean, so much for the "Adamle Original"

Actually any appearance by Cryme Tyme is one too many.

I have a feeling John Cena is going to be out for a very, very long time. Whenever guys like Rhino, Stone Cold, or Greg Helms get neck injuries they seem to miss well over a year of action.

I was deathly afraid Adamle was going to name himself the replacement for Cena in the Scramble match.

Hacksaw really needs to stop
wrestling on TV.

I was at the show in Bridgeport, CT on Friday night and the ovation that Cena got was deafening. Love or hate him, his injury is bad for the WWE bottom line.

Its getting kinda funny...if you want to see a good wrestling match on TNA or WWE programing you have to wait for a ladies match to come on. want to see wrestling? dont watch the guys. unless you call punch/kick/punch wrestling.
Matt

p/s i would SO buy the playboy that Beth Phoenix does if she ever does one! that chick is a total hottie

I think Cena should go the Rock route and get out of wrestling before he damages himself beyond repair. Obviously he's been carrying the company on his back the last couple years and now he's beginning to break down.

I have to echo the comment of 'The Criminal Bogie'. I understand that Mysterio is being set up for a program with Kane, but what justifies him getting a shot at the strap?

I think your scenario with Jericho would have worked perfectly. In my opinion, this feud should be head-lining PPVs, especially the 'final showdown'. Just seems like this feud has more going for it than any of the 'Championship Scrambles'.

Great reaction from the live crowd for CM Punk. See WWE, the guy can get over if you stop burying him ever week. Strong match with JBL, hopefully they don't panic and take the belt off him in 2 weeks. It would also help if they stopped referring to his victories as surviving....

According to Mike Adamle, John Cena has more than one neck. No word on whether he injured all of them.

Cryme Tyme needs to get better on the mic, and fast. Still, as the only other tag team on Raw, they could have done more to build to this confrontation. As it stands now, CT has lost much of the momentum it got from being aligned with Cena and those 6 man tags.

Jericho should have been put in the scramble. Great segment with Michaels on Monday, but HBK needs to buzz his hair.

How likely is it that Cena has been feeling the symptoms of this injury for quite some time and waited til after Summerslam to have it looked at? It would explain why they went ahead and had the Batista match now, fearing the injury may be career threatening or at least require surgery putting Cena out 12 months or longer.

JBL's ring work was surprisingly good. I have no problem with admitting that.

As for the crowd cheering Cena's injury, I am going to (sort of) play devil's advocate and point out that fans have been fed numerous worked injuries like HBK's eye problem. That may explain some of the reaction. That said, I don't doubt that some people cheered while hoping that the injury was legitimate, and, as has been said, that is disgusting.

It's been a while since I tuned into a full episode of RAW, and now I remember why....

I'm sorry, but Mike A is horrible, and not only was Cryme Tyme's appearance bad enough, but I agree, their chant is atrociously annoying and just seems out of place.

I wish they'd revert Kane to his earlier persona. Was it ever really explained why he can now talk, but never could before? And why does he now wear one contact in his eye instead of the previous two?

Unibrow on Marella rubs me wrong too, though I did like the dynamic with Beth...

Speaking of which, I agree with you that Kelly is improving vastly. I almost didn't recognize her at first as the last time I watched her in ECW it was so bad.

Sorry to hear about Cena's injury, and I don't get the rush to add Mysterio to the mix. There are better choices by far.

Jericho on the Titan Tron was great, though I thought Shawn was a bit too 'hammy' at times and bordered on unbelieveable to me.

Punk/JBL...liked it, but was surprised to see JBL let himself go a bit around the waistline.

Charlito was great, but Primo was boring to me....I had no thought process about him before, during, or after the match. Forgetable character.

This makes me feel slightly hollow inside, but I'm going to have to agree with Matt on the topic of Beth Phoenix and Playboy... but before this gets out of hand, let me explain! :D I've been soul-searching somewhat on this topic.

I think the reason some of us find Beth so appealing is the fact that she oozes charisma and character unlike many (everyone else apart from poor Victoria and Natalya?) of the other wrestlers on the roster.

This is certainly why I find, say, Beth and Nattie far, far more 'beautiful' than say McCool or Kelly... I hope this doesn't sound like I'm saying that there are different standards for beauty, I'm just saying that having a fully rounded personality, even if it's just on television, helps people to generate feelings for a character.

In wrestling, wrestling ability is a big part of that. Beth and Nattie neither ever feel like T&A even though both have plenty... of BOTH. Wow.

In terms of this week's Raw, I don't have too much to add. Rhodes and DiBiase were priceless on the microphone again and I find it absolutely hilarious that they're doing a "stop already with the tomfoolery and shenanigans, you... you youngster hoodlums!" thing with Cryme Tyme - if things go badly wrong, it might get them over and give the creative team a big headache!

I do have to say that I've never had anything against Cryme Tyme and especially Gaspard seems like an asset. His OVW stuff seemed compelling.

Hate to say it, but Primo will not last in the WWE unless they team him up with Carlito quickly. A dysfunctional "double act" would be great for both at this point. Primo is clearly the straight man and Carlito would be the comic... they would be amazing, quarrelling about coolness, ring attire, entrances, haircuts, family business... I hope they won't let the opportunity slide. In this case the "Cross the Line" slogan from TNA would definitely help, as I wouldn't necessarily turn them heel or babyface, but instead keep them as tweeners... Carlito would try to cheat as much as he can and Primo would grudgingly try to prevent him every now and then... it would be different for sure.

It's awesome what kind of heat the mere visage of Jericho has at this point in time. Old-fashioned cruel heel heat. The crowd nearly booed the titantron out of the building! That frown is, for the lack of better term, simply priceless for WWE right now. I wasn't as convinced with HBK's delivery this time around, but Jericho is definitely the Man right now when it comes to promos.

Marella is just so fun to watch. Lance Storm just put up a column on his official website where he discusses comedic heels and the article basically ends up praising Marella to the moon... such praise from Lance is saying a lot (he's such a big authority in terms of wrestling philosophy for me) and I must say I think it's full well deserved. He is so precise and keeps perfecting his comedy craft with little details.

For instance, just the way he lifts up his right-hand clenched fist every time he gets up, reflex-like, as if hopelessly trying to hang in there with the other wrestler, makes me close to cracking up.

You never fail to crack me up McMahon Jr! "It will set up a slightly different pace" Let's see, one guy can actually wrestle the other. . . . is good at telling poopy jokes. Yes that was every wrestling fan who's male and over 12 that was cheering his injury. Next time old poopy one should ease off the roids and his body won't break down.

"Yes that was every wrestling fan who's male and over 12 that was cheering his injury"

Yeah Eric you should have said over 12 in years not mentality coz only an IMMATURE JERK would ever cheer the serious injury of someone who has worked their (butt) off to entertain us, I am in no way a fan of Cena but I still would never dream of cheering him getting seriously hurt..

Like the guy or not he has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the business he loves..

Its morons like those who booed him at the HOF ceremony and those that cheer him getting injured that ruin this for everyone.

At the end of the day Cena portrays a character which a lot of people just do not like, but some "wrestling fans" really need to grow up and realise where the fiction ends and reality starts, he is a human being for gods sake how would those that cheer this feel if people cheered one of their family members getting hurt??

I am a big believer in you pay for your ticket so cheer and boo whoever the hell you want but "people" like that should just walk away and come back to watching wrestling when they grow up a little (or should that be a lot?)..

Sorry Kev dont wanna start an arguement on your blog but this total lack of respect for anyone just annoys the hell outta me!!

enough said :) lol

At this point, if you think Cena can't work, you must not actually watch his matches.

BTW, in case you didn't know, Rey Mysterio's name showed up on list of steroid buyers last year.

Nailed it.

Personally, I was one of the ones cheering when he said cena was injured. Not because I'm happy cena is injured, no, far from it, but the fact that with cena out and unable to be shoved down our throats, it opens doors for others such as Jericho (Or Mysterio, as the WWE went with) to be in the spotlight.

Don't get me wrong, Cena's a phenominal athlete, but they need to rework his gimmick a bit, it's gotten old. The fans boo him, not because they hate him (from what i've seen) but because they hate his gimmick. The 'superman' gimmick, lifting 500 pound men, the using a handful of moves and winning 90% of your matches, it worked for about a year, but it's just gotten stale.

Like what Daniel said, he's a great athlete and loves the sport but he's just...

Everytime I hear his music I grimmace. I don't understand why he gets so many cheers. His gimmick is old and stale. The super strong white rapper army soldier... oh boy.

I love Natalia and Beth. They're my favorite Divas right now. The one I hate the most right now is... McCool. Oh my god I've never been able to stand her. Hopping around and doing that stupid fist pump thing she does 20 times on her way to the ring. It's worse now that she's the "Diva's Champion" because the belt is too big for her tiny waste and just bounces on her. She should drop the belt to Natalia (who should have won it in the first place).

To tell you the truth, Cena hasnt been "rammed" down our throats for a long time now, he gets interview spots sure, but so does Trips, and trust me, that guy gets rammed, forced and shunted down our throats.

To tell you the truth, I like Cena. For such a "terrible wrestler, he sure comes out with alot of 4 to 5 star matches, even when he wrestled the likes of the clumsy Khali or the boring Orton, people still walked away going "That was a great match"

So I for one am sad that he isnt going to be wrestling, Id rather see Trips out than Cena, Id even go as far to say Cena is on par with HHH in the wrestling. Lets face it, HHH hasnt changed a single move or personality trait for ages! Yeah, I know a few peeps are gonna get up in arms and point to a certain Sitting Indian Deathlock. Big whoop, a move that rears its head once a year.

I agree with the Cryme Time chant being annoying... I was begging for a commerical break once the fans stopped chanting it 5 minutes into it...
Why does WWE keep debuting these middle class guys and get some tag teams going or more main eventers, instead of the same people going for the title on raw?

And my biggest question if someone could answer for me... Why does people boo John Cena? I was at summerslam and couldn't believe the people booing him what the hell did he do? Disrespect JR? seriously whats wrong with cena?

john cena will be back in about i hear two to three to four months and he could be back by the time randy orton comes back from his injured collarbone or a little later or sooner. also i like cena as a wrestler but not orton and i never hear a louder response from the wwe crowd then i hear for john cena being injured and people always chants yes for cena and if it were randy orton or someone like him or anyone else to get injured they say nothing and its becaused there haters because hes the most successful wrestler of are day and age.
