Turn Back the Clock Night on Impact
I have a confession to make: I dozed off briefly while watching TNA Impact last night. While the show was dull at times, I really think the resting of my eyes had more to do with having a long day and a lack of sleep the night before than it did with the quality of the show. Fortunately, I taped it, so I didn’t miss anything. At one point when I was struggling to keep my eyes open, however, I wasn’t sure if I was awake or if I was dreaming that I was watching an episode of WCW Nitro from 10 years ago.
Wrestlers running around in Sting masks and black trench coats was cool for a while in 1997, but WCW eventually did it so often that it became a cliché. To still be doing the “Sting thing” in 2008 (Kurt Angle and Team 3-D raided Steve Borden’s wardrobe last night) is pretty lame. The story line that began at Sunday’s Victory Road pay-per-view of whether Sting is or isn’t turning heel also has a been-there, done-that feel. Next thing you know, Jeff Farmer will be repelling from the ceiling.
The confusion over the TNA world title also seems like a page from WCW’s playbook. I don’t believe that there has to be a decisive finish in every pay-per-view main event, but paying customers deserved better than the ill-conceived non-finish to Sunday’s Samoa Joe-Booker T. title match.
Last night, Booker T. was carrying around the title belt even though he is not the champion, and Samoa Joe, who still is the champion, told him to just keep it until the next pay-per-view. Why not just keep it simple and have Booker screw Joe out of the title at Victory Road and then defend it against him in a rematch with stipulations at Hard Justice? That way, people who paid for Victory Road won’t feel like they got ripped off, and they – and others – might be compelled to pay to see Joe try to regain the title.
Fittingly, Impact concluded with another wrestling cliché, as Booker T. tried to dump Consequences Creed into an ambulance, but – surprise! – Joe was waiting in the ambulance and attacked Booker.
At least that’s what I thought I saw. I might have been dreaming.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
When cutting a promo about Sting turning heel, Angle said that everyone thought “it could never happen.” Except it did. Sting briefly turned heel in WCW in 1999. I know that no one was watching WCW at that time, but it still happened. …
For a second, I thought Ric Flair was coming to TNA. Angle and Team 3-D were attempting to imitate Sting’s howl, but it sounded just like Flair’s “Whooo!” …
I already hate the Eric Young/Prince Justice Brotherhood story line. …
The best part of the show was Robert Roode and James Storm whipping everyone in sight with belts. Hopefully the person responsible for coming up with the Prince Justice Brotherhood got a few well-deserved lashes. …
Karen Angle will be getting her own talk show segment starting next week. That could be pretty good. At least we now know what her talent contract is for. …
I really like the way Matt Morgan was booked, as he got quick squash wins over Jimmy Rave and Lance Hoyt, who is now known as Lance Rock. Nothing against Hoyt, who is a decent worker and has a good look, but his faux rocker persona comes off like a Saturday Night Live skit satirizing pro wrestling rather than actual pro wrestling. …
Kaz and Petey Williams had the best match of the night. It looks like a heel turn might be coming for Kaz, which probably isn’t a bad idea. …
Velvet Sky winning the gauntlet battle royal to earn a shot at women’s champion Taylor Wilde was a surprise, but it does make sense. Wilde needs a decisive win in her first title defense against someone other than Awesome Kong, and she will most likely get it against Sky. …
It seems like the Jay Lethal-Sonjay Dutt story line has been going on forever. Just have SoCal Val turn on Lethal already and let’s move on.

Kevin , you said the best part of the show was when Roode and Storm started whipping everyone with belts . I think the best part of the show was the return to t.v. of Traci Brooks . I guess she had to leave my house sometime .
Kevin , you have a pattern here each week of - falling asleep , going to a baseball game , washing your dog , when TNA comes on . Funny I do the same thing when the Vince McMahon show comes on .:)

Well you can rest easy knowing that Beer Money gave Prince Justice whatever-it-is the lashings they deserve.
You know who I don't like, Matt Morgan and Gail Kim.
At least Jack in Hebron got his Traci Brooks appearance.

Is Jim Cornette the best gm character? I thoughly enjoy his vignettes with knockouts (who are destroying the divas)
Yes I know Vickie has made huge strides but she can only play the heel. Cornette plays the guy who makes the popular/unpopular decsions and sells his stress level to audience.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Cornette is awesome in the role.

I haven't watched TNA in months, but last night my cousin convinced me to do so. The entire time I felt the same way you did, like I was watching Nitro. The thing I hate most is showing a wrestler arriving at the building while the show is going on. To me that is just dumb. It would be the equivalent of the Orioles showing George Sherrill showing up at the game in the third inning. Now, I understand that the wrestlers were there the entire time and it's just a skit, but its a stupid backstage segment that has no point in being on the show.
Also, for TNA to be taken seriously as a wrestling organization they need to invest in some announcers. Mike Tenay and Don West have to be the two worst announcers in the history or wrestling. Tenay would be ok in a Mean Gene type role, but full time play by play man is way above his level.
They also need to get away from copying gimmicks. Think up something original.
Also, last time I watched TNA AJ Styles was on Kurt Angle's side and Tomko was in limbo. Now I see AJ Styles back with Christian and Tomko back to his silent sidekick role. What a waste of talent. They should put AJ back in the title hunt in hopes of he and Joe recreating some of the amazing matches they had in the early days of TNA.
Matt Morgan is the reason I'm happy TNA exists. He didn't get a real shot with WWE but has really grown as a wrestler in TNA.
Looking forward to your thoughts on the Bash.

Ok, i tried to watch TNA last night. But man! 5 minutes into the show they were pimping the next PPV and they were pimping it hard! have a few matches first! tell some stories first! do't immediatly let me know that the last PPV was worthless because it will be the same Main Event in 3 weeks! argh!
i tried man....i just can't watch it.

Even Sting doing Sting is old. The dude needs to change. Hate to say it but now I'd even prefer his original Sting look better.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: There was talk of him doing that in WCW seven or eight years ago, but it never happened. At his age, the old Sting look might not work anymore.

Kevin, I like a lot of the talent in TNA but your right, the writing is a mess. In WWE, the writing is often just formulaic and boring.
Why is it so hard for these organizations to be a little creative without making a mess out of things?

I hope we do get a new shift in Sting's character.
Its just been the same old thing for like 10 years now.
Don West and Mike Tenay are still the worst announcers in professional wrestling. Quit yelling at every single thing. A simple squash match with Matt Morgan shouldn't involve more yelling then when Undertaker choke-slammed Mick Foley through the cell roof.

It's interesting to me that the Knockout division seems consistently better booked than the male wrestlers. Last night's gauntlet match (and the outcome) was probably the smartest thing on the whole show. Velvet looked appropriately surprised that she won; the Kim/Love issues have even more meat behind them now; Roxxi/Jackie can have a lower level program develop; and now Kong and ODB, who are both crazy over, can begin struggling to get back to the top of the division. Compare that with any of the male divisions and the difference is striking. Well done, TNA.

I think Sonjay Dutt is trying to be like Eddie Guerrero with the chair shot.
I really like what they are doing with the Knockouts and giving them more air time is a plus for them. Knockouts over Divas anytime. Most of the show seemed like WCW years ago. This had to be Vince Russo's doing.

*LAUGHS* Nicely done, Carnac!

I tried to watch (3 weeks in a row until this one) and just couldnt get into it last night. For a show coming OFF a PPV, it seemed very..bleh.
Segment of the night was Cornette and the knockouts. Saying that he hoped none of them were married because they would cause their husbands to commit suicide was funny and a bit too much at the same time. Anyone who taped it, go back and count how many boob grabs were in the segment(not just ODB grabbing her own).

What happened to the X division championship?

I really think having the Rock n Rave Infection use Guitar Hero guitars is a bad decision. Even without that they're a little too over the top for me, but bringing toys to the ring just makes them look like idiots. You could at least give them real guitars. It's a shame because I like them in the ring, and I've always been a fan of Hoyt, but they just need some better work on their gimmick.

Mr Bronson - thanks for your concern ! ( and to those in the peanut gallery as well ) . Traci says thanks too .

"At his age, the old Sting look might not work anymore."
That may be true, but it could have legs for at least a couple of weeks. Think of the nostalgia! When I told my brother who rarely watches wrestling that Sting was in TNA, he asked if Sting looked "the way he used to." He seemed dissapointed when I told him no.
Today, a co-worker asked me if I watched wrestling last night. I assume he was referring to Impact. Upon my answering no, he said "it was just a bunch of lady wrestlers." I am not qualified to comment much on the Knockouts, but apparently, they are not what every casual fan wants to see.

David , I always tape it just so I can try to catch Kevin on something .... he always wins though . More importantly , how many minutes into it were those bo.........

This has nothing to do with last night's iMPACT!, but according to PWI, A.J. Styles has been a world champ more times than Christian Cage. Interesting fact, seeing how styles keeps playing Cage's lackey.

Believe it of not I just got cable television four months ago (ok, don’t laugh). Eager to see what TNA was like, I’d watch it each week. I actual tried to follow before that reading columns and listening to internet radio. After seeing it now, I can’t put my finger on it but something seems a little OFF about the whole promotion in general. I’m glad that the wrestlers have an easier schedule, but that seems to be the only benefit of the promotion. One thing I can say is that AJ Styles really is “phenomenal”…I hope he won’t waste his entire career there. You can see that wrestling is really in his blood. It does remind you of WCW in it failing years.
Hey Andrew, you are right about Matt Morgan, he really has grown!
