Night of Champions preview
Predictions for tonight’s WWE pay-per-view:
WWE champion Triple H vs. John Cena: The draft last Monday added a lot more intrigue to the two world title matchups. With both champions currently on Smackdown and both challengers now on Raw, obviously one of the titles is changing hands. I’m guessing it’s time to put the belt back on Cena and have Triple H chase the world title on Smackdown.
World heavyweight champion Edge vs. Batista: If I’m right about Cena beating Triple H, then Edge somehow will cheat his way to another victory.
ECW champion Kane vs. Big Show vs. Mark Henry: Since Henry is the only one of the three who is officially on the ECW roster, I’ll go with him. The belt will help him get over, while Kane and Big Show already are established stars and don’t need it.
U.S. champion Matt Hardy vs. Chavo Guerrero: It wouldn’t make much sense to have Hardy lose here after he fought so long and hard to win the title from MVP. Plus, as the new top star on ECW, Hardy needs to be kept strong, so he’ll get the win in what figures to be a good match.
World tag-team champions Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. and mystery partner: I’ve been saying all along that Rhodes will be the mystery partner. I think he’ll turn on Holly and help DiBiase win the title, and then DiBiase will choose him to be the co-holder. If it isn’t Rhodes, my other guess is former TNA star Chris Harris, who has yet to debut on television, but I really think it’s Rhodes.
WWE tag-team champions John Morrison and The Miz vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle: I’m certainly no fan of The Miz, but he and Morrison have had a seven-month reign and defeated teams like the Hardys and Kane and CM Punk, so it would be a travesty if they lost to a midget. I know WWE already treats the tag title as a joke, but I’m holding out hope that it won’t become a complete laughingstock, as Hornswoggle as one-half of the tag-team champions would be worse than Judy Bagwell (I think she was tougher than Buff). Morrison and Miz will retain (I hope).
WWE women’s champion Mickie James vs. Katie Lea Burchill: Burchill has two pinfall victories over James on TV, which leads me to believe James will win tonight. I like Burchill’s character, but I don’t see any reason to take the belt off James at this point.
Note: A match involving Intercontinental champion Chris Jericho has not been advertised on television or on WWE’s Web site.

Comments
Although Cody Rhodes would be a swerve that would make Vince Russo get giddy, I still would prefer to see Ted Dibiase Jr team up with Joe Henning. Which would give the WWE a chance to break up the team next year.

And let's not forget what happened to the last title Hornswoggle used to hold, which was also treated as a complete joke beforehand. Damn, I really wish WWE'd start treating the secondary titles with some dignity again. Have all tag teams fight for one belt and you'd have a good division. Get the cruiserweights to ECW and let them fight for the belt there, without being constantly destroyed by "the big boys"... ah, well. A girl can dream, can't she...

Even though all of these matches are for championships, this card is not that interesting to me and not worthly of plunking down much needed gas money. In some ways it's almost overkill to have all the titles on the line at once and with no gimmick matches there is no special lure. At this point, with no Jericho or Michaels or Undertaker or Orton, the card is lacking a great deal in star drawing power.

And who can forget the frequent (if not always followed) rule:
He who looks strongest right before the PPV is going to job.
Batista and HHH stood tall Friday night on Smackdown, so they're going down tonight, leaving HHH to chase Edge and Batista to go to Raw and maybe be the one to take it up with Cena.
In that situation, it'd be fun to see a Cena turn (since they managed to keep Batista a face even through him basically killing Shawn Michaels in their last match...)

Isn't there another DiBiase in training, Mike DiBiase? Could HE be the mystery partner of Ted Jr.?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: There are actually two more DiBiases training to be wrestlers -- Mike and Brett. I don't think it will be one of them because WWE has built this up as a surprise, and that wouldn't be a very good payoff since no one knows who they are.

I wouldn't be surprised with all the chaos following the draft, if tonight is the night CM Punk finally cashes in the MITB
briefcase.
Do you think the latest Vince death scenario could be the back door to allow either Regal or Flair to return to the ring?

I've been thinking about this ever since the draft but do you think both Triple H and Batista would pull off a deal to help each other out at Night of Champions?
What i'm thinking is that Triple H will interfere and help out Batista in his match against Edge and then later on Batista returns the favor and helps Triple H beat John Cena. What you would sort of have is a Batista heel turn seeing as how he would end up screwing the fan favorite John Cena, making Batista the top heel with the belt on RAW. At the same time, Triple H would be the champion on Smackdown and would quickly become a target for La Familia.

Could you show Hornswoggle the least amount of respect by calling him a "little person," instead of a derogatory word? WWE is sports entertainment, and Hornswoggle has made Finlay's character entertaining. Plus, he is a trained professional who can work matches (unlike Judy Bagwell, which as I recall was far worse than a Finlay/Horny reign would be).
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I agree with you that Hornswoggle has made Finlay entertaining. I just don't want a "little person" competing with the "big persons" and winning a title.

Any chance HHH and Edge both win to lead up to a huge Summerslam unification match?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I would love to see onw world champion, but I don't see that happening.

It would indeed be a travesty if Hormswoggle becomes a tag team champ, but I shall not bet against it. Do you the remember the lame manner in which Brian Kendrick and Paul London's long reign ended at the hands of Deuce and Domino? A title change tonight would be even worse. Really, Hornswoggle has to be written out of the script before he mothballs any more titles than he already has.
Continuing with what Elevation eluded to, it would make sense if Regal were behind the set collapsing, but I am hoping for the Undertaker.

I'm used to Vince and the WWE mucking up the on-air product, but rarely have I seen them screw up strategically from a business standpoint as bad as they have with this years draft. I just don't get it. I understand they are loading up Smackdown! with top talent because it's moving to a network even smaller than the CW in the fall. However, it seems that they have forgotten that you cannot just change demographics, especially considering the built-in audience and timeslot. Smackdown! runs from 8pm-10pm on network television and attracts a younger demo and a larger spanish-speaking audience (which they covet). So, it is perplexing as to why they would remove Rey Mysterio from the show, given that he is unquestionably the biggest latino draw in the company (and maybe the world) and little kids love him. Even though I am a fan of Carlito, he is no Rey Mysterio. Also of note is why they would choose to move Triple H to Smackdown! over John Cena. Cena is just as big of a draw as HHH, with the added incentive that he is waaaay more over with the younger SD! demographic than the slighly older cable viewers that watch RAW. Besides all that, you cannot reverse 15 some odd years of RAW being the flagship show overnight and this draft has really drained the roster for Monday Nights. Is it worth losing precious ratings for your big ad-revenue generator, just to make a big splash on a nowhere network that isn't going to be turned around by WWE programming alone? I would think not. Is anybody really excited about the prospects of Cena-Batista-Kane angles for the belt? Does anyone buy that Jeff Hardy for CM Punk is a fair trade? How can anyone justify putting Kofi Kingston (who is promising) on prime time before Elijah Burke? WWE was already in a decline, both in ratings and "sports-entertainment" quality. A lot could have been mended with this draft, but I'm afraid Vince may have dropped the ball on this one. Again.

My guess for mystery partner is going to recent Raw draftee Jimmy Snuka Jr. a.k.a. Duece.
On a card that's billed as a night of champions where Mr. McMahon has repeatedly said that EVERY Title in the WWE will be defended, what does it say about how they view the IC Title when it's the day of and there's no IC match booked?
Posted by: Mr. E | June 29, 2008 4:01 PM
JGavin:
MyNetwork TV is in as many homes as CW if not more and should easily become, by far, the biggest show on the channel, so it's just a matter of getting out the word that SD will now be seen there.
Mr. E:
WWE has been billing NoC this year as "every match on the card is a title match" rather than all WWE titles being on the line.

Kevin- you were on the mark man. Good calls all night...except the Triple H/Cena match. I felt that one coming...it's time for Punk to cash in. I'm guessing he'll be called on to save one of the titles from Smackdown and bring it back to Raw. Genius angle, though there's no way Gerschwitz came up with it. He hates Punk. Either way, for the first time in awhile, I'm extremely excited to see what's going to happen.

Boy Eck, did you call the Rhodes turn or not??? Well done!!! Also great Mark Henry prediction
Posted by: Shawn Patrick | June 29, 2008 11:35 PM
MyNetwork TV is basically the same network as UPN was. So you could say that SD is coming home. If you wanted to.
And, as we now know, there was indeed an IC match.
