A new and improved Smackdown
Judging by last night’s episode of Smackdown, it looks as if there is going to be another reason to say, “Thank God it’s Friday.” And if you are one of those people who only watch Raw, well, WWE is trying hard to make you rethink that decision.
As expected, the presence of Triple H and Jim Ross breathed new life into Smackdown. The addition of Ross on play-by-play especially enhanced the show. In fact, Ross is so good that he could even make ECW into must-see TV. OK, well even J.R. isn’t that good, but he would make it a lot better.
Even though Ross initially wasn’t happy about being drafted, he is a consummate professional and has clearly put his hurt feelings aside, which is exactly what he said he would do on his blog and exactly what I would expect from him.
Having Triple H open the show with a promo was predictable but it was the right call. I did think his opening remarks about Vince McMahon’s “accident” were a little weird, however, as he was making light of it after we saw him being very concerned at the end of Raw.
Edge interrupting Triple H’s promo planted the seed for the inevitable feud between them. I can only imagine what Triple H’s peers will be thinking as they watch him participate in a story line in which his opponent tries to hold him down by abusing a personal relationship with the boss. Oh, the irony.
A few other thoughts on last night’s show:
Edge and Matt Hardy had a very good match that was laid out perfectly. Edge as the world champion has the same quality that Ric Flair in his prime had when he carried the belt, which is the ability to make his opponent look like a million bucks before pulling out the win in the end. …
Vladimir Kozlov is getting over as a monster heel. When the time comes for him to work programs with the top guys, I think it would greatly benefit him to have a heel manager to cut the promos. …
I couldn’t get too choked up about Rey Mysterio’s “final” Smackdown appearance. I can still see him every Monday, and with the relaxed “rules” regarding talent appearing on shows other than their own, I’m guessing he’ll be back on Smackdown soon enough. …
It’s always good to see Maryse win a match. Then again, it’s always good to see Maryse.

I see Daddy sent you the memo huh? Little McMahon Jr falling right in line lockstep like a good little boy. I'm sure everyone else who reads this is Shocked about that right? What a joke.

The Edge-M.Hardy match was very good, one of the best television matches that WWE has put on in recent months. I do have one nitpicky complaint: When Hardy put on the brakes in order to avoid colliding with the referee, you had to know what was coming next.
In regard to Mick Foley, who is "Cherry Cherry"? And he makes fun of Mike Adamle....
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I give Mick a pass on that one. It shows he's human (WWE could have edited it off in post-production if they wanted to).

Triple H brought the audience through a range of emotions during that promo, including several sardonic lines that were hilarious. Last night's promo further illustrated what you were saying, Kevin, about Trips babyface persona being more versatile than his heel persona.
Honestly, I enjoyed the show last night. Matt Hardy is one of my favorites to watch and I liked that they kept him strong in a loss.
My plan going forward is to be entertained by the shows I watch. There's something to be said for leaving the over-analytical criticism at the door and keep in mind that wrestling, like all forms of entertainment, is doing its best to put on a great show.
Sure, there are things that could be done better and things to criticize and analyze. Part of the fun of talking about wrestling (or any other entertainment medium) is delving further into the storylines and decisions made by the folks involved in the production of the show. But if that starts overshadowing the enjoyment of something you love, it becomes a hindrance to the purpose of being the audience.
Bitterness and a holier-than-thou attitude becomes no one. And generally makes the so-called "smart marks" look immature and childish.
Thanks for being a refuge in the plethora of internet options for a wrestling fan, Kevin. You look at the WWE and TNA (as the two major American promotions) without too much bias, and are equally rough on both of them when you feel it warranted. You also don't hold back praise for either of them. That's why I keep up with your blog more than anything else out there.

The Smackdown episode reminded me of everything that was good about WWE 8 years ago or so. Triple H, as heel or as face, is a great character. His detractors should take a look at themselves....the verbal exchange with Edge, although brief, was quality. I look forward to their programme.
Maryse? Kevin - seriously? She looks like she wants to be related to Paris Hilton. Michell McCool and Kelly Kelly are sooooooooo much better to look at. Kev, I agree with your posts pretty much constantly...apart from Maryse!!
Smackdown....it seems will be the better show...I hope you find the time to blog about Smackdown more...now it seems to have an equal if not better roster than Raw, the flagship show.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I'm totally with you on Kelly Kelly, but I've never been all that impressed with MIchelle McCool (I'm talking about more than just her looks).

I'm not so sure I'm ready to do any dances or praise Smack Down. After all I've been complaining about Vince & RAW for what seems like forever. So at the moment I consider Smackdown RAW Lite, which maybe is what Vince wants, I don't. I want to see how this shakes out a few more weeks down the road to see how all 3 brands react to the new or changed titles.

I think McMahon missed a big opportunity on Smackdown. The ending with Triple H and Batista was so predictable, you could see it coming the entire show.
After JR's comments, I would've thought a better scenario would've been Triple H and Batista being left on their back by SD!'s biggest name, Edge. The way it was played out, surely will be demoralising for the talent at SD!. Basically, guys, just rollover coz Triple H is now here to rescue you...

"His (HHH's) detractors should take a look at themselves"
Maryse's detractors should take a look at, well, Maryse. I am just kidding, Wayne. I too rate Kelly Kelly ahead of Maryse, but I rate Kelly Kelly ahead of every diva. I think Maryse is among the best of the rest.

I gotta admit, the draft worked. I added Smackdown to the DVR list to check it out. Two things will always hinder SD, however:
1. It's not a live show, and I (much like most wrestling fans) will read the spoilers to see if it's worth tuning in or not.
2. It's on Friday night. Most of the SD target audience is out doing something else on a Friday night than watching wrestling.

Kozlov is getting over as a monster heel? C'mon Kev, I have too musch respect for you to actually think you're being serious about that.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: That's my honest opinion. I wasn't impressed with him initially, but he's grown on me. I think WWE has taken a guy who is limited and actually gotten something out of him. By having a unique ring entrance and style, Kozlov is becoming a distinctive character.

Carlito joining La Familia ... now that would be cool.

Hey Kevin, with the draft over, the superstars switched around, and this article, does this mean you're going to start blogging on both RAW and Smackdown? I noticed before that you had only wrote about the happenings on Raw and barely on Smackdown (not that I blame seeing as how Smackdown was as stale as dirt before the draft)
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: It was more of a time issue for me than anything else. With the Smackdown upgrade I'm going to have to try and write about the show on a more regular basis (don't tell my wife!)

"That's why I keep up with your blog more than anything else out there."
Don't forget that the quality of writing is incredible too. On its own it's absolutely superb; when compared to the other sites out there, it's impeccable. Just because it's about wrestling and not science or politics or current events does not mean that it shouldn't be held to the same standards as literature concerning those topics. I know it's sort of a given because Kevin's been in journalism for years and he wouldn't have made it in the business if his writing was crap, but it's just another one of those little things that puts Kevin ahead of the rest and keeps me checking the site far more often than is necessary.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Thank you for the very kind words.

You are totally right, Alvaro. Kevin's writing is fantastic. As the daughter of a journalist, I deeply appreciate the intelligent writing that Kevin gives us with every blog.
But then, I figured that Kevin knows that I am a fan of his writing for how often I comment here! My oversight for not saying it outright!
You're a brilliant writer, Kevin, and it certainly doesn't hurt that you're a fan of Shawn Michaels. :) He's my favorite, too.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I really appreciate that. Thank you.
