Nonstop action on Impact
TNA set a high standard for a go-home show to one of its pay-per-view last month, and while last night’s Impact fell short of that, I still found it to be an entertaining show. Sure, there was so much going on that things that should have had more of an impact were quickly forgotten, but the flip side is that the show never dragged.
Much of the episode was devoted to the “Egotistical Eight” pairings for the Deuces Wild tag-team title tournament at the Sacrifice pay-per-view Sunday. Before the show — and without reading the spoilers — I predicted the pairings would be Sting/James Storm, Matt Morgan/Kip James, Booker T./Robert Roode and B.G. James/Awesome Kong. The first two were right on the money, but the other two teams won’t be announced until the pay-per-view. It seemed contrived that every team in a “random drawing” would consist of feuding wrestlers —except for B.G. James and Kong — but it probably was the right call.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
I thought TNA did a nice job of building up the women’s battle royal at the pay-per-view, which will result in one of the women getting her head shaved. As is common with TNA, however, some things were a bit confusing. There was an immunity pole match last night, meaning one of the women would be immune from getting her head shaved. When Jim Cornette said that if the winner of last night’s match turned out to be the loser on Sunday, instead of her getting shaved, it would be the “runner-up.” It was never made clear, though, what constitutes being the runner-up. I guess it would be the second-to-last woman eliminated, but wouldn’t it make more sense to punish the first one to go? This seems like something that wasn’t well-thought out and was just thrown in at the last minute. I think it’s hilarious — and somewhat surreal — hearing Cornette — of all people — trying to explain Vince Russo’s crazy concepts. …
I also have to admit that I’m not quite sure what the object is of the Terrordome X-Division match. …
Back to the women’s pole match. Pole matches in TNA long ago jumped the shark — has saying “jump the shark” jumped the shark yet? — but this match, which was won by Gail Kim, was pretty good. …
I’m the first to say that TNA has gone overboard with swerves, but I actually hope there is one with the Samoa Joe-Kevin Nash angle. It seems too obvious that Nash is turning on him, which will make Joe look stupid for not seeing it coming when everyone else does. Given Nash's history of turning on people — which Joe should be familiar with since it is obvious that TNA is obsessed with past WWE and WCW story lines — why would he ever trust Nash in the first place? …
Speaking of TNA referencing WWE, it came off as cheesy having Matt Morgan do a DX catch phrase. Get your own material. …
I’m starting to like Kip James as a singles heel. He definitely has an unlikable quality about him, and I mean that in a heat-getting way, not in a channel-changing way. ...
I enjoyed the Sting-Storm match, although I wish that Storm would have gone over. He is very close to getting to the next level, and a win over Sting would have been a big step in that direction.
The Border Toss that Hernandez did to Christian Cage backstage on the floor looked painful. If a guy is going to take a bump like that it should mean more in the story line than this did. …
Not to be too nitpicky, but among the four “regular” tag teams in the Deuces Wild tournament, I only count two: Team 3D and LAX. And how can perhaps TNA’s best team — The Motor City Machine Guns — not be in it? …
Two more questions: Why were Scott Steiner and Kurt Angle wearing sunglasses at night? And was there a story line reason as to why Johnny Devine has gone back to the Paparazzi Productions gimmick? …
The six-way X Division match — which ended with Jimmy Rave pinning Curry Man — was good. This was the match in which Petey Williams suffered a broken orbital bone, which I think was the result of a kick to the face by Rave. …
Crystal is back!

Yeah , Crystal is back . Kev , you know why Big Poppa Pump had the shades on , because he wants to . I had to laugh when during a backstage interview w / Smoa Joe ( as Steiner would say ) he said he had big Kev (Nash) in his pocket . It quickly made me remember a previous comment by someone to this blog stating that our own "Big Kev "( Eck ) was in someones pocket . But lets not go there . By the way Kevin , from a fashion standpoint I thought that Traci's blue top was very " flattering ". Kevin , as always I enjoy messin' with you.

I don't think that a saying can jump the shark, at least not how I understand the term: the moment at which a show started to slide into goofiness.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Thanks for clearing that up.

I read there were 43 individual entrances in the 2 hour show.
Thats ridiculous.
This weekend's PPV is going to have horrible sales.

Hey Kev , off topic , any news on Hall & Waltmans rehab ?
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Haven't heard anything.

I think the stipulation for the women's battle royal match is just ridiculous. Given how common title shots are in any promotion, it would seem that all the participants would be better off eliminating themselves early on instead of risking the chance of seeing their beloved hair gone.

Jumping The Shark: The moment in which a tv show pretty much guarantees its own cancellation.

Kevin, I think the Terrordome match is that all the wrestlers start inside and to win, they have to climg thru the hole at the very top of the dome. I am really surprised that they give so much time to the knockouts. But I am glad they do because they are part of TNA and should be able to have the time to build up their storylines as well. That is something WWE does not do with their Divas. I am liking TNA much more every week over WWE because they have a little something for everybody. I guess having one 2 hour show compared to WWE having 3 shows totalling 5 hours per week. And a big YEAH for Crystal being back. I like her a lot more than that ECW interviewer Lena Yada or whatever her name is.

Hey, Kev what did you think of friday night smackdown? wasn't it cheesy at the end with edgeconveniently medically cleared and was put into action after batista put the big show over the top rope. I mean don't they realize there messing with fans, not just with raw turning out the lights, but with smackdown as well with Vikie messing things up all the time

"Speaking of TNA referencing WWE, it came off as cheesy having Matt Morgan do a DX catch phrase. Get your own material. …"
It's not like this is the first time that TNA has done this... it is getting to be a disturbing trend, though.

I can't believe that I am saying this, but I agree with you on Kip James. I have always felt he has had a natural d-bag aura about him, but I really think with the right repackaging (new duds, new music and fer god's sake a new haircut) he could be a good heel. They should make him really bitter about being passed over all these years and having to carry teams and stables and whatnot on his back. Maybe take a shot at his lame past gimmicks (Mr. Ass, and, ahem, "Billy") and how now it's all about him. I'd like it. Although they HAVE to drop "Megastar". Thats just terrible.

Are the Motor City Machine Guns still in the dog house? It doesn't make since that they're still being buried.

I think the reason that TNA moves so quickly from one thing to the next is they don't want you to think about the holes in their booking logic that exists in almost everything they do. Do the bookers watch their own show? What happened to the recap at the beginning of the show? How much money did they spend on this Terrordome cage they will result in 0 extra buys for the PPV? The stipulations and story behind this tag title chase is probably the dumbest thing I have seen in wrestling after Mae Young giving birth to a hand. How many TNA employees would not struggle to properly explain the complexities of this story they have created? The womens storyline with the head shaving is not much better. If I was a woman in this match I would eliminate myself.

If TNA can just find the proper balance between over booking and under booking, it'd be that much better.

I hope saying jumped the shark has jumped the shark. I have never liked the phrase. The episode of Happy Days when Fonzie jumped a shark seemed to me to bring Fonzie and Richie closer together. That strengthened the show not started the beginning of the end.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Also, the snobby guy who challenged Fonzie was a great heel.

TNA stinks, the product has sunk like anything (match & entertainment quality wise) since early-mid 2006 for "some unknown reasons". Besides the downfall of the above mentioned, I hate the parodies and constant wwe references (it does nothing but to make them look like the inferior incompetent show), too much emphasis on comedy (if thats what the nonsense is supposed to be), gimmick matches and stipulations that simply go over the top of my head (and im not the only one), and of course, the impact zone (wow, so now we need two seperate entrance corners to be able to understand who the heel & who the face is? to be honest, we do). in short: tna sucks, and no im not a mark.
now that ive left myself open to be raided by a troop of kurt angle loverboys i would like to add that i wont reply because i dont care, because ive made a statement and i know its true, its damn true

Here are just some of my personal thoughts on what happened at Sacrifice on Sunday. I must say I was a little dissapointed how the PPV ended up. As a wrestling fan who never really buy PPV's I thought this was one worth buying due to the amount of matches as well as who would be wrestling. As it turns out within the first 5 minutes one of the main matches of the PPV was ruined when we learned that Kurt Angle would be out due to a neck injury. Ok I understand that the man has had a serious injury for most of his career so you cant be mad at him. Then Nash shows up with Steiner. So you obviously think he is going to turn on Joe or play a role in the title match. Nope of course not. Just like TNA normally does they build up something and fall incredibly short. He didnt even come out but for 3 hours they played this tennis match like he was going to do something. Then shocking LAX won the tag titles. Hello. When you only bring out Hector Guerrero for a week to be apart of your entourage you kinda figured they were going to win. There were no real tag teams in the tournament besides LAX and the Dudleys. Im starting to be convinced though now that Devon is the second coming of Ahmed Johnson. Every week it looks like he put on a couple more lbs. Again why wasn't MMG in the tourney they are by far one of the best tag teams in TNA. Much better than the duo of Styles and Eric Young "Super Eric" or whatever lame character he portrays this month. Good luck finding Elvis, maybe we will be spared from you until Slammiversary. By the way Styles nice swan dive in your first match. I havent seen a miss that bad since Brock Lesnar tried to do a shooting star press on Angle at Wrestlemania. Which then brings me to the terrordome match. This match I thought could of been real promising. But as soon as Cornette came out saying the winner of the match would also be in the main event with Steiner and Joe you knew who was going to win. Just look at the contestants. Your really mean to tell me that Curry Man was going to be on the main stage. Absolutely not. Kaz was the only Superstar with some experience against bigger opponents. Although the match itself was probably the most entertaining they didnt have to ruin the ending before the match even started. The womens match was decent but again poor execution. Memo to TNA when your going to have women be eliminated from a battle royal could you at least tell them not to throw themselves over the top rope with out anybody around them. Traci Brooks got kicked then paused for 10 seconds then miraculously threw herself over the top rope. I actually shock my head and laughed when I saw it. But again you knew Roxy was destined to be bald but overall not too bad of a match. Which then leads me to my last match. Joe, Steiner, and Kaz. Is there possibly a worse champion then Joe. His wrestling style is great but he looks so out of shape that its depressing. I was really hoping Nash would play a role in this match or Steiner would come out on top but no such luck. Steiner looked ok and Joe spent most of the match on his back. But it got to the point in the match where they all realized that the match was crap and Joe just ended it. Overall for a PPV that had a lot potential TNA fell short but at least they didnt turn off the lights. OK im done ranting. Peace

Hi Kevin,
This is my first time writing a comment on your blog. I really enjoy the blog and look forward to it. In the subject of TNA, I think that as fans we need to do some type of Intervention and let them know how we feel about their product. I really want TNA to have great success but with the way they are doing things at this time, this will never happen. Anyways, just a thought. Not sure how we as fans can make this happen.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Either this is an incredible coincidence or else that's not his real name.
