Jeff Hardy’s return highlights Raw

Finally … the cable has come back to Bal-ti-more!

Yes, my TV is back in business, and, luckily, just in time to watch ECW (insert your own joke here). But I digress. I’m here to talk about Raw, which I finally watched thanks to a combination of a colleague’s videotape and youtube.

The big news from Monday’s show was the return of Jeff Hardy from his 60-day suspension. It wasn’t advertised ahead of time, but it was known in wrestling circles that Hardy was set to come back Monday. Jim Ross called it “a big surprise,” and the crowd greeted Hardy with a tremendous ovation.

Hardy acknowledged that he made a mistake and he paid for it. Before Hardy could get too far into his promo, William Regal cut off his microphone. I thought that was a good move. It gets more heat on Regal and it allows Hardy to address his suspension without going into specifics or cutting a long promo.

Regal immediately ordered a match between Hardy and Umaga, and Hardy surprisingly went over in about two minutes (although it looked to me as if Umaga got his shoulder up before the three count). Having Hardy defeat Umaga in such convincing fashion tells me that Hardy is still going to get a big push. I truly hope that Hardy can keep it together and realize his potential.

Other thoughts on Monday night’s show:

I liked the latest twist in the Chris Jericho-Shawn Michaels story line, as Jericho apologized for accusing Michaels of faking his knee injury, and then Michaels admitted he was faking and proceeded to knock out Jericho with a superkick. In the bygone era of babyfaces such as Bob Backlund and Rick Steamboat, a move such as that would signal a heel turn, but nowadays, babyfaces are expected to be almost as cunning as the heels.

WWE continues to keep fans guessing as to whether it’s Jericho or Michaels who is turning. I’m still betting on Jericho. The wild card here is Batista, who said previously that he would hurt Michaels if he found out he wasn’t really injured. One would expect Batista to confront Michaels either on Smackdown or at the Judgment Day pay-per-view Sunday. For the third consecutive pay-per-view, I think Michaels' match has had the best build. ...

The main event featured another good match between John Cena and Randy Orton, which Orton won due to the interference of JBL, who was inserted as the referee late in the match by Regal. It was a good way to build the Cena-JBL feud and get even more heat on Regal. …

Remember when Cena was unbeatable? Since coming back from his injury, he has been pinned on two consecutive pay-per-views, as well as Monday on Raw. Could it be that his frustration will bubble over and he will turn heel? We can only hope. …

Those who complain about Triple H being on Raw too much must have been happy, as “The Game” didn’t show up until the end when he did a run-in after the main event. …

Orton’s new theme music is awful. Sometimes, you just have to leave well enough alone. …

Speaking of awful music, Lillian Garcia does a great job of singing the national anthem, but she should never again attempt to sing an Aretha Franklin song. Her rendition of “Respect” had about as much soul as a Barry Manilow song. …

While I didn’t care for Garcia’s singing, I can’t get enough of Trevor Murdoch’s vocal stylings. The live crowd didn’t seem to catch on that his signing was supposed to make him a babyface, but I think they got it after Lance Cade KO’d him with a stiff right hand. …

I wonder if the flirting between Cena and Mickie James is going to lead to a story line. I’m all for anything that gives James more of a role. By the way, wasn’t there a budding romance between James and Murdoch a while back? …

I like Mr. Kennedy better as an obnoxious babyface than as an obnoxious heel. I think he is getting very close to becoming the main-eventer so many people thought he would be. …

Snitsky seems to be, um, not working out as much lately. Yeah, that must be it. …

Santino Marella was really steamed at Roddy Piper for costing him and Carlito their match against Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes. We all know what that means. Yep, it’s just a matter of time before 54-year-old Piper is added to the ever-growing list of people Marella has jobbed to, joining the likes of 58-year-old Jerry Lawler and Maria.

I do not get it - how is singing the British national anthem not showing the crowd respect? The opening segment may have alienated the fans from Britain.
Regal is doing a great job. He just needs an antagonist in the Austin mould to carry his work into a higher level. Cena does not fit in. Who will?
Marella jobbing seems realistic as he is a limited worker with no great power. His mic skills are awesome though.
Btw the Great Khali has got a huge response in India. Kids love him and he is doing a good job in promoting the WWE. A WWE tour to India right now would get a huge response. What do you think about it?

hey kevin great blog i read it often, love the insight. I was wondering tho, how come you dont write entries after every smackdown? I know you cover raw, ecw and tna, but i take it you arent a big smackdown guy. Id just like to read what you have to say about it instead of, say, ecw. Im tired of edge weasiling his way into pay per views, i wanna see the two best, undertaker and batista, slug it out. Maybe even give big show a shot, anything besides edge! But anyway, great to see jeff hardy back, and mickie james can never get too much camera time haha anyway keep up the great work.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I write about Raw and Impact every week because they are the signature shows of their respective companies. I write about ECW and Smackdown on occasion but not every week because I just don't have the time between my other responsibilities at The Sun and at home.

Are you saying that Snitsky doesn't seem to be mixing in a salad here and there, Kev? He was already more pimply than your average 9th grader and whiter than Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Lets take his razor away and put some bib overalls on him and he could be Uncle Elmer's son, Jedd. He could hook up with Cletus and Festus.

This was a great show. I was there at the Joe Louis Arena. This was the first wrestling event for my daughter (5yrs). I think she's a gonna be a long time fan. Crowd was really into the chanting and pretty much all the matches. I did see Umaga's shoulder off the mat as well. The Steel Cage dark match (DX & Cena vs JBL, Umaga, Orton) was great. the ending a little too staged for my taste, but great none the less.

I agree with the Orton music. It felt like they were just cuttin a promo featuring his stock footage in the arena, until he popped out from the back. I really liked his old music.
Great Site Kevin. I check it daily. Keep up the good work!!

What did you think about Orton's new music?

It seems odd that Jeff Hardy, Kennedy, Umaga, MVP, Matt Hardy, Finlay, and Big Show are all being left off the Judgment Day card.

I think Jeff Hardy getting a push is a way to keep his mind off of losing his home. So I hope he can keep his head screwed on tightly and not fall back into doing the drugs and/or alchohol or w/e his problem was. Always great to see the Hot Rod and yeah looks like the little push that Santino/Carlito was getting for the tag titles might be gone or they will prolong the feud. I am surprised of the way Murdoch sounds. he isn't too bad. But the shot he took from Cade was a doozy. As for the HBK/Y2J feud, it's anybody's guess as who will turn heel. I really like Mr. Kennedy, seems like the obnoxious baby face is the same one that Stone Cold Steve Austin had or has. ECW last night stunk as usual. I wonder how much longer they will keep that on sci-fi. All it is an extension of Smackdown. Why not do the same for ECW as they for heat and keep it exclusively on WWE.com

It looks like Umaga has taken over the official role of the goon that the GM calls on when he wants to punish or discipline someone that used to belong to The Big Show. Unfortunately for him, I do not remember The Big Show winning many of those matches in the past. I guess he will be in the role until they come up with a new gimmick for him - maybe a manager or handler to speak for him.

i thought that Lillian Garcia had a wonderful singing voice way better then Trevor Murdock. Hardy coming back was the hilight of the night to me. i'm such a big fan and it's so evil that regal shut off the mike, but it did kind of add some drama to hardyt's return.

think a michaels turn could lead to a hhh v hbk title match soon? that would be interesting

just when you don't know how to make Kennedy look like a face, It seems like putting Kennedy against Reagal just make the tick. he was well received last monday. And his victory against Snitsky was cool.
But what happened with that feud between him and Reagal? Because two weeks ago, it looks like they were going to have a program or something.
There it was a rumor about Jeff being hold in the mid card level forever as a punishment for his violation to the wellness policy. But as the way he was received last monday, WWE will no choice but to Push him.
I couldn't watch the show last monday neither...
But as you said once, You tube is a beautiful thing.
Kevin, with feuds being so bad delivered lately, don't you think is time to come back to the old PPV system, with one exclusive for RAW and one for ECW/SD! ?
Because except HBK against Jericho, everything else seems a bit messed up... A month it seems to be not so much to develop a good story

Piper's sammiches are no longer safe!

If Marella does it right, he can scoff Hot Rod's lunch and pin it on Lawler. Then they can all battle it out in a Bermuda Triangle sammich-on-a-pole match to put this meaningless, er, I mean, PPV-buy fueling fued to rest once and for all.

Odd how many angles get introduced, then dropped, isn't it?

I too like the direction that the Jericho-Michaels-Batista storyline has taken. I can't always say this, but good writing, creative team!

WWE should give Murdoch hazard pay if he is going to get stiffed like that. He didn't have to be a first-rate actor in order to sell that punch.

I can only speculate, but maybe someone, either Umaga or the referee, was confused about how the match was supposed to unfold.

I found Cryme Tyme more tolerable last night because they were wrestling instead of doing some stupid skit, not that I'm blown away by their ring work. If the idea is to connect with the African American demographic, I would rather see Shelton Benjamin and Elijah Burke move up the card (full disclosure: I am not black).

Only six matches on the Judgment Day card...do you think they will add anymore? Santino vs. Roddy Piper? Kennedy vs. Regal? Big Show vs. Mark Henry? And is Batista injured??

Orton's new music is gonna get old really fast.

It does seem like WWE is headed towards a match where Santino Marella jobs to Roddy Piper.

Personally, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why put over someone that's just a special attraction?

Actually, Roddy Piper isn't as special of an attraction as he used to be. His recent work on the mic has been rather sub par.
