Awesome Kong gets to play with the big boys

It was inevitable that TNA women’s champion Awesome Kong would mix it up with male wrestlers, and last night on Impact it was revealed that she would be a participant in the tag-team title tournament at the Sacrifice pay-per-view on May 11.

With Kong’s size -- she's listed at 5 feet 9, 250 pounds -- and aggressive style, viewers will most likely not have a problem accepting her as a physical threat to the men. I think it’s a good move because it’s a chance for TNA to do something different. The only woman to compete against men on a regular basis in a major promotion in recent history is Chyna, who did it in WWE in the late 1990s.

Other than the announcement of Kong's inclusion in the tournament, however, not much stood out on Impact. Typically, the show is either really good or really bad, but this episode was just kind of there.

Here are some other thoughts on last night’s show:

Throughout the show, A.J. Styles was looking for a tag-team partner to replace the "injured" Tomko. After Styles was repeatedly turned down, a mystery man off camera accepted, and Styles and Jeremy Borash acted like it was a big star. Instead, it was Super Eric. TNA fans seem to like this character, so I can't fault the creative team for pushing him, but, personally, I don't find it entertaining. ...

Just wondering: Does teaming with Super Eric make Styles a babyface now? If so, I think TNA missed a golden opportunity. Styles should have remained a heel until doing his face turn in a big angle, perhaps one involving Kurt and Karen Angle. ...

Scott Steiner is so bad on promos that he's good. His convoluted spiel in which he went into a plethora of percentages regarding his chances in the three-way match at the pay-per-view was pure gold. The sad part is that I had an easier time understanding him than I do most of TNA's match stipulations. ...

Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle have had such an intense feud that I didn't like seeing them as tag-team partners, even though things eventually did get physical between them. When the announcers questioned how Joe and Angle could possibly coexist, I was thinking, "Probably the same way they did when TNA did the exact same angle during Joe and Angle's initial feud. ...

Cheerleader Melissa was impressive in her debut. The match I really want to see is Cheerleader Melissa against Raisha Saeed. And also Super Eric vs. Eric Young. Here's an idea for the TNA creative team: When one of the heels charges that Super Eric and Young are the same person and demands that they both appear on camera at the same time, Young can come out with someone like Mike Tenay or Borash dressed in the Super Eric costume. That's right out of the Batman series from the 1960s, when Bruce Wayne and Batman appeared together. It was really the elderly, lanky Alfred the Butler donning the mask and cape. ...

I enjoyed the women's match in which Gail Kim and ODB defeated Angelina Love and Velvet Sky. Love is actually a better worker than I first thought she was. Even though Velvet Sky isn't as good in the ring -- although she is great at entering the ring -- I wouldn't be surprised to see her in WWE one day. She has the WWE look -- and she is dating Gregory Helms. ...

The opening match between The Motor City Machine Guns and Curry Man and Shark Boy was really good before Steiner and Petey Williams interfered. ...

It looks as if LAX is about to get another push, which is a good thing. Apparently, Hector Guerrero will be taking over the Konan role as the mouthpiece, but I'm not sure he can fill those shoes. That reminds me of one other match I'd like to see: Guerrero vs. The Gobbledygooker.

What I'd like to see with Cheerleader Melissa is if she gets a shot at Kong, then Kong demands a face to face confrontation. Saeed, standing behind Kong, then reveals herself, and surprise attacks Kong. It'll be OVER.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin , we are not worthy of breathing the same air as the " Big Bad Booty Daddy", the "Genetic Freak ", Scotty Steiner . Who else could be blessed with such a physique with the daily stacking of Anavar and Primobolin ? Who else can use such wordage as "phenomamom" & "mesmermise" ? As he says "he's the next heavyweight championship of the world". Big Poppa Pump is your hookup , holla' if ya hear me Kev !

....."but this episode was just kind of there". My thoughts exactly regarding the need of vomit bucket IF watching Raw .

Pretty funny how Eric Young doesn't entertain you (me either) but Randy BOREton does??? But as I always say, if you want an objective opinion on Raw read PWInsider which agrees with most of us, that it's been crap for the last 2 years. Kevin McMahon Jr is in the minority(and Vince's pocket)

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: You didn't really mention Eric Young and Randy Orton in the same sentence did you? And let me get this straight: If I agree with you, it's an objective opinion. If I disagree with you, I'm in someone's pocket. I've been putting over TNA quite a bit over the past six weeks or so. Does Dixie Carter have me in her pocket, too? Actually, given the choice, I think I'd rather be in Dixie's pocket. By the way, have you noticed how a lot of the wrestling sites that criticize Raw also are critical of TNA?

That Jack in Hebron is so right , "Freakzilla" rulz . Even though he meant to say "without" the daily stacking of Anavar & Primobolin .

wow, Kev, what happened to actual conversation in blog comments? It's sad that people have to sit here and say that just because someone says something bad about one show, but good about the other, he's in the pocket of an organization. I watch each of the four shows that are on every week, and I'll admit that TNA hasn't always been the "A-1 choice". But, the fact that people take the opinon of one man and act as if he's saying that "I wish TNA would just pull the plug." The man is simply saying that, hey, maybe Eric Young/Super Eric doesn't appeal to everyone, especially people who are used to seeing, oh I don't know, wrestling on shows that advertise "Wrestling". That's a novel thought. Oh, and if Trevor Murdoch singing "Friends in Low Places" doesn't touch a soft spot in your heart, then maybe you're not in touch with the inner wrestling fan(and, to some people that don't like it, redneck).

only way Kong can lose the women's title is in a Triple threat match or something where she doesn't have to sell directly to an opponent.

Beth Phoenix is probably the only wrestler in the WWE who could hold her own against the men there. I don't think WWE will ever go that route though, the women's division in the WWE is really to get noticed by mainstream media and Playboy magazine, not for the wrestling.

With TNA, I can take the bad with the good, not with WWE which has millions of dollars in promotion, talent, viewership, then still puts out a product only slightly better than TNA.

Love the LAX re-push, whether it has something to do with the Konnan lawsuit or not. Don't mind the heel/face blurring, but ECW has done it already. . .then again, ECW is for the most part dead, at least the good version. Really love Melissa! One the best female workers in the U.S., and the crowd was way into her--let's see where they go concerning her and the Saeed character.

Concerning the Eric/Orton posts earlier: Eric is funny, charismatic, and is a good, exciting worker. Orton has the looks and the attitude, but I agree with the poster Jack: I've seen more exciting chess matches than Orton performing in the ring. Oh, and Eric is actually a cool guy outside of the ring, where Orton the person, uh, well, needs some work. . .yeah, I think I'll take E. Y. over Orton.

Your right Kevin! I shouldn't insult Eric Young by comparing him to Boreton! I apologize.

And it's not about putting over TNA. They've stunk since Russo took over. It's your constant ignoring of the horrible product WWE is putting out there that makes me wonder if you're blind or on the take. Since there is no seeing eye dog next to your picture I assume it's the latter.

Technically , I think it would be Kevin McMahon III . :)

Kevin, do NOT feed the marks! While you're at it, why not try to argue with the City College fans on the high school message board.

WWE had a couple of chances to sign Velvet Sky already. They chose not to.

Of course, now that her stock is a lot higher, they should probably reconsider.

You forgot Black Reign vs. Dustin Rhodes vs. Goldust in a triple threat match. And Owen Hart vs. The Blue Blazer.

P.S: What is Gregory Helms doing these days, and when is he thinking about returning to WWE?

I don't understand the deal with Super Eric. It's so stupid. I don't like Eric Young either. It's a waste of TNA airtime that could be better used by other, better, more entertaining wrestlers. When was Jay Lethal last on Impact? What about Sonjay Dutt, Elix Skipper, or Johnny Devine? Instead of seeing one of those guys, who are infinitely more talented and entertaining than EY, we get TWO segments with him. Bleh.

No matter though, I'll keep watching TNA for four reasons, those being Salinas and Christy Hemme.

You say that Velvet Sky has the WWE look and you wouldn't be surprised to see her there. Your are right, sort of. She was sporadically in the WWE in 2005 and 2006 and additionally auditioned for the 2007 Diva Search, but did not make the top 8.

I am with you on Scott Steiner's promos. Stick him in the same category with the Ultimate Warrior on being so completely over the top bad and somehow it fits the character.

Its amazing to me how much Hector looks like Eddie. I caught Impact late and this was the first scene. I had to adjust my eyes a little to not think TNA had somehow resurrected Eddie.
Hector hadn't really been on the wrestling map in a while, so it caught me a little off guard.

Most of the mid-carders in TNA are better than main eventers in WWE. That's not to say that WWE doesn't have good, young talent. They do (Orton, Marella, Kennedy). They just don't know what to do with them. TNA is still an actual wrestling show wherein a majority of the program is spent in the ring showcasing the atheletic talents of the wrestlers. For the most part the storylines are based around some sort of competitive balance and not every feud starts and exists for it's own sake, which means that the stories make more sense. I can't watch WWE anymore. It is, for the most part, complete garbage. Also, TNA has real tag teams and females that, even though they might not be as typically attractive as the WWE girls, can really wrestle. Also, TNA may have the best all-around wrestler in the world in AJ Styles and they know how to use him.

Scott Steiner is hilarious, intentionally or otherwise and they gotta come up with something better to call "Cheerleader Melissa". Ridiculous.

Hector Guerrero vs. Lazor-Tron

Southern Boys vs. Young Pistols

Dusty Rhodes vs. The Midnight Rider

Barry Windham vs. The Yellow Dog

Andre the Giant vs. Giant Machine

Savio Vega vs. Kwang (or TNT)

Or how about Curry Man vs. Christopher Daniels? One thing for sure. It's an effective cost cutting measure.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I forgot about that one. That would be the best match of all the ones I mentioned.

I had a friend, a friend named Lee, he cast a spell a spell on me, if me and Lee and KG could be free, flying free tenaciously.

I'm sorry if my tribute seems a bit odd, but it's late and that's the first thing that came to mind. I'm just happy somone finally agrees with me on this. My number one reason for being a TNA fan over a WWE fan is that TNA seems more dedicated to the idea of wrestling being an athletic sport, whereas WWE seems more focused on being a spectacle.

Before I go any further, I would like to point out that this IS Kevin's blog and it's not good karma to start attacking him here, whether you disagree or not.

A couple of small notes, I cannot stand watching WWE's women's division anymore. Is there such a thing as Women's singles matches in WWE anymore, or just sticking every b-list model you hired for a Playboy deal in a tag match with the handful of talented women you have left? Maybe if we got someone that was living in this century in there as booker we might see some better female representation (and I'm not trying to take a shot at the fat man, for those who were wondering).

I'll never understand those people who continue to bash Randy Orton. He works a great character, and reminds me of heels from the 80's like Macho Man and Ted DiBiase. For those of you saying he can't work an exciting match, watch his series of matches against the Undertaker, his match against Chris Beniot, or any of his Wrestlemania matches.

That being said, I do think he does better when he's getting worked over more than the other person. One match of his that I almost fell asleep during was his recent blackout Raw match against Triple H. He kept working Trips over, and it seemed like he was running out of moves. Something just didn't seem right in that match anyways, though. Both wrestlers can and have worked better matches than that, and it's not fair to judge them on one performance.

I'm going to make a defense of the Eric Young character. It's really not that goofy of a character. I think people who don't understand the character like Jim Cornette try to make it seem goofy, but I think it's actually very deep. For those of you who don't know, EY has always been a little paranoid. He's been afraid of foreigners, Sting, Reign and Rellik, among other things. Now, it's only natural for people with excessive phobias to create some sort of coping mechanism, an alternate persona in EY's case. This is a real psychological decision, and those displaying these traits can become so dependent on their alternate persona that even when confronted with clear evidence they still refuse to face reality. I think it's great to see a gimmick that reflects real life as opposed to one that tries to do an exaggerated parody of it.

I also think that people dump on the gimmick because it threatens them. A common trait of hegemonic masculinity, especially here in America, is internalizing problems and masking emotion. This is a trait that is consistently perpetuated by media, wrestling being no exception. For people who watch wrestling on a regular basis, this becomes a trait that they grow comfortable with, so when an alternative trait is presented in the same atmosphere they feel threatened. What's wrong with a wrestler who isn't completely macho and needs to compensate to be able to fit in to a certain environment.

As for having a double standard, I think there is a clear-cut one against TNA. A couple of months back the big thing was Reign and Rellik. Well, Reign is nothing more than a darker extension of the Goldust character that Dustin has used throughout his career, in WWE and elsewhere. So the message I'm getting is that it's OK in WWE but not TNA. Oh, and Rellik is ridiculous, but Kane, Taker, just about ANY Kevin Fertig gimmick, the Brood, the Ministry, Mankind, Vader, and all other dark characters are OK? I always hear about EY, but what about Eugene, what about Festus? I've heard about compensation, but I've never heard of any case of bell ringing-induced controlled psychosis. Yeah, and Jimmy Yang doesn't have a completely ridiculous gimmick. I will never understand why people continue to be amused by Asains making fools of themselves. Has there ever been an Asain that got pushed with a serious gimmick? Tajiri was a pervert, Kenzo Suzuki had a strange obsession with American pop culture, TAKA and Funaki had ridiculous dubbing over thier native language. Can anyone seriously say that's in good taste? Having someone with an alternate personality, but watching someone sit in a urinal is? Incestuous relationships are? WWE has the Boogeyman, for crap's sake. No one ever let's back about Eric Young, but then those same people never mention WWE's bad gimmicks. WWE practically built their empire on a stupid gimmick, Hulkamania anyone? You don't like a gimmick, fine, but how can you go around trashing it and then not do the same for WWE's screw-ups?
