Jericho’s bad intentions
Unless WWE is pulling a major swerve, Chris Jericho is about to embrace his inner heel again.
It was hinted at last week on Raw when he was stirring the pot during the interview segment with Shawn Michaels and Batista. Last night on Raw, Jericho was even more heelish.
First, he interrupted another strong promo by Michaels by coming out to Ric Flair’s entrance music, which naturally elicited a chorus of boos from the crowd. Then, in trying to goad Michaels into admitting that he retired Flair to satisfy his own ego, Jericho recited Michaels’ past transgressions, including the fact that he had conspired against Bret Hart in Montreal in ’97. After Michaels had heard enough, he gave Jericho a superkick that looked as if it legitimately caught him square on the chin.
Later in the show, Jericho successfully defended the Intercontinental title against Umaga by scoring the pinfall with his feet on the ropes.
I enjoyed the interaction between Jericho and Michaels, who are two of my favorite performers, and I’m looking forward to them reviving their rivalry.
It was announced that Jericho will be the guest referee in the Michaels-Batista match at the Backlash pay-per-view on April 27 at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. It sure seems like Jericho will be turning against Michaels at that show. Raw could use another good heel, and Jericho always is entertaining whether he’s a heel or a face.
Other thoughts on last night’s show:
It was a nice surprise to see Mickie James defeat Beth Phoenix for the WWE women’s title. I just wish WWE would have followed through on the story line of James chasing Phoenix, with the title change occurring at WrestleMania XXIV. It would have meant a lot more. Instead, we got a lackluster women’s tag-team match at WrestleMania and Snoop Dogg making out with Maria. …
I feared for the worst when Randy Orton landed badly on his head and neck from a suplex by William Regal. I’m amazed that he wasn’t seriously hurt and was able to finish the match. I also was surprised at how much offense Regal got in. I know he was wrestling in front of his countrymen, but I don’t think the Raw general manager should be able to physically dominate the WWE champion. …
The main event between Triple H and JBL whetted my appetite for a singles program between them. They’re both strong characters, and I’m sure the promos would be great. …
When JBL and Orton double-teamed Triple H after the match, it was pretty obvious that one of the heels was going to turn on the other, and it ended up being JBL who laid out both guys. It sounded like the fans were expecting to see John Cena make the save, but he did not appear on the show. …
Carlito and Santino Marella versus Paul London and Brian Kendrick was a good-but-short, fast-paced match. Carlito and Marella prevailed in the bout, which was to determine the No. 1 contenders to the tag-team title. I would love to see Carlito and Marella get a run as tag-team champions, although those belts don’t really mean much at this point.

I'd love to see Jericho and Michaels revisit their feud from 2002-2003. That was some awesome stuff.

"...those belts don’t really mean much at this point."
I ranted on this a few months back, but tag team wrestling in the WWE is a joke. Everyone in WWE is a singles wrestler. There are no legit teams anymore.
"...lackluster women’s tag-team match at WrestleMania."
You hit the nail on the head there, Kev. The only reason they had that stupid Bunnymania crap is so WWE and Playboy could cross-promote and sell a few more magazines. Now that all the silliness and profiteering is over, the women's division can go back to wrestling. Kudos to Mickie for her hard work and for putting up with months of worthless posing by women that aren't qualified to tie her boots, much less face her in the ring.

Did the Regal-Orton match finish get pushed up?
I saw the ref give the X symbol with his arms and then the match ended not long after.
That Umaga-Jericho match put me to sleep the whole time Umaga was on offense. Enough with the nerve holds.

I was surprised that Mickie James regain the womens title from The Glamazon. iI attended Wrestlemania and would have rather seen that than the Bunnymania. I hope Jericho does a heel turn b/c thats when he is at his best. Even though the tag belts dont mean much anymore, I would still love to see Santino and Carlito win them b/c it would mean more mic time for Santino. You have to admit he is the funniest guy in the WWE right now

It seems odd that they're going with turning Batista and Jericho at the same time. I'd be pretty entertained if Jericho keeps on with his goading like this week, and then Michaels finally admits "yeah, I DID ask for the retirement stip" and turns back to the whole "putting Flair down like Old Yeller" thing he did the week before Wrestlemania.
I suppose, though, that he's too popular with the fans to really work that in unless his subsequent promo totally trashes Flair in some way. It'd still be a fun twist to see.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Personally, I hope they just go with the obvious and turn Jericho. I strongly doubt Michaels will turn, and I don't Batista is either.

I am sorry, but the whole show just put me to sleep. Why was it that the RAW after Wrestlemania was a great show, but they didnt follow up. I think wrestling has "Jumped The Shark"...I have dozens of old RAW's from about 95 - 2001/02, and that was when wrestling was fun. Just watch some clips from 97 and then watch some from today...it just dosent compare. I used to revolve my life around making sure i was home to watch RAW or Smackdown when it was on Thursday's...now it's just like if nothng else is on, then I will put it on, but I always end up flipping channels because I am so bored. Is there anything WWE can do to make it more interesting again???

Last night's Raw was a big improvement over the previous week's. The Jericho-Umaga match picked up in the final minutes, but I agree with the comment about nerve holds.
I can't say that I have missed Mr. McMahon over the past few weeks.

Pat--Wrestling is like any type of entertainment, it's cyclical. I missed 80s wrestling as a kid, but jumped on board with the WCW/NWO angle and the Austin/Attitude area. Took a lot of good luck and timing to pull off such a great period, and it's hard to duplicate that success. One that that I think holds down wrestling right now is that guys are going through the WWE developmental system and not learning unique skills/techniques. Takes guys like Austin/Michaels/Mick Foley and even guys like Hogan years to learn how to entertain. Even the Rock, one of the quickest stars to ever rise, took some time tweaking to get it right.
I think Jeff Hardy's freaking out upsets me because he could have been a guy with a unique style and attitude to set the wrestling world on fire again. Now we won't know.

I realize I'm out of my realm here since I'm a bigger TNA fan than WWE ( however a WWF fan probably when most readers were in diapers ) . But I just don't see it ... whats the big deal about Jericho ?? Wasn't impressed with him in WCW , and don't see much difference now . I guess I just left myself open to be pounded by Jericho supporters .

Had I known of McMahon's ( Kevins dad ) absence the last few wks. , I may have tuned in more .

Hey Kev,
What do you think about the idea of Regal saying he is fed up and booking himself into a main event angle where he wins the title. After all surely the Regal Stretch is just as effective as the STFU.
RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Uh, no.

To Jack in Hebron: How could you not like Jericho? He came back from reality tv to save the WWE from the likes of Randy Orton... oh wait. You're right.

If WWE plays their cards right, they can have months of months of storylines already written for them for Shawn Michaels.
Every wrestler on the roster can be gunning for Shawn Michaels because he retired Ric Flair.

Jericho turning heel is a good thing. He is at his best on the mic being cocky and rude and much easier to do that as a heel. To be honest, I don't really care too much about Batista at all and am interested to see what happens with Jericho and Michaels. But where does that put Batista? Who knows.
Being an Englishman, I thought it was nice to see Regal get some offence in, but of course he did lose clean.
I am a little disappointed in Backlash. Such a re hash of Wrestlemania and adding JBL to the main event just makes no sense, he is good on the mic, and the clothesline from hell is still impressive. I will not be purchasing the Backlash PPV.
The King of The Ring intrigues me. For me, it has to push a young and upcoming star, maybe they will enhance CM Punk's stock but he is not over enough yet for me. I cannot think they would already let an established star win, what is the point in that? How do you see it Kev?

it is hard for me to see Jericho v.s Michaels. hbk is my favorite of all time, my idol, but i like Jericho almost as much. so ya it will be interesting

I agree, backlash is wrestlemania rehashed. It is time triple H got a run with the title again and enough of the tripple threat and fatal fourway matches. The WWE title match should be man on man.
ps I have missed Vince
