Royal Rumble thoughts

It was WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper who once said, “Just when they think they have all the answers, I change the questions.”

The big question going into the 30-man Royal Rumble match last night on pay-per-view was: Who will win – The Undertaker or Triple H?

But WWE changed the question, and John Cena was the answer.

Cena coming out as the 30th entrant and winning the Rumble was something that no one saw coming. Not only did Cena’s return shock fans and pundits, but it reportedly even caught his peers in the locker room off guard. According to 1wrestling.com, Cena was kept hidden all day and virtually no one backstage knew he would be appearing.

There had been reports recently that Cena was ahead of schedule on his injury rehab, but I never thought he would be this far ahead. When he suffered what WWE said was a complete tear of his right pectoral muscle during a match with Mr. Kennedy on Oct. 1, it was expected that Cena would be out of action for six to eight months. That meant that Cena had little if any chance of being back for WrestleMania XXIV on March 30.

Lately, however, there were rumblings that Cena would be at WrestleMania, doing a run-in at the very least and possibly even a match. Again, I discounted the notion of him wrestling because it just didn’t seem possible that he could come back that quickly from such a serious injury.

Now, I’m wondering if Cena is a medical marvel or if his injury was either a complete work or highly exaggerated. One thing is certain: Cena’s surprise appearance made for a memorable moment last night.

It also helped explain the result of the WWE title match, in which Randy Orton retained the title by pinning Jeff Hardy clean with the RKO. It now looks like a Cena-Orton title match could headline WrestleMania, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see a triple-threat match between Cena, Orton and Triple H or maybe even a Cena-Triple H match (depending on what happens at the No Way Out pay-per-view next month).

Here’s a match-by-match look at last night’s show:

John Cena won the 30-man Royal Rumble match: For those of us who thought this match was going to be predictable, WWE proved us wrong. The surprises started right from the get-go when The Undertaker – the odds-on favorite – and Shawn Michaels started the match. That was a nice touch to have the two finalists from last year’s match as the first ones in this year. And who would have guessed that Undertaker and Michaels would be the 11th and 12th men eliminated, going out before the likes of The Miz and Cody Rhodes? With Undertaker gone, I thought the finish was going to be anti-climactic. I had no doubt that Triple H would win, especially when he was the next-to-last man in. Wrong again. The look of shock on Triple H’s face when Cena’s music hit was tremendous and the pop from the crowd was huge. It was a cool moment as well when Cena, Triple H and Batista all did their respective hand gestures before squaring off. … I liked the nostalgia moment of Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka briefly going at it. … I didn’t understand why ECW champion Chavo Guerrero was in the match. Isn’t his title theoretically one that the Rumble winner could challenge for? … I was stunned that Shelton Benjamin was eliminated so quickly. I actually thought he was getting over as “The Gold Standard” in ECW and still had a shot at being a future superstar. Guess not.

WWE champion Randy Orton defeated Jeff Hardy: Hardy had been riding an incredible wave of momentum and a lot of people were expecting a title change. After such a great buildup to this match, the ending appeared to deflate the crowd. When Hardy got up off the mat after losing, it seemed like WWE was hoping that he would get a big ovation, but there really was just some polite applause. I believed Orton would win, but I thought Hardy would look a little stronger in defeat. The question now is: Where does Hardy go from here? The cynic in me says that WWE just doesn’t consider Hardy at the same level as guys like Cena and Triple H, as evidenced by this result as well as that smirk that Triple H had on his face last month after he lost to Hardy, which seemed to indicate that he was laughing it off as a fluke. If that’s the case, I think WWE is missing the obvious. I hope I’m wrong and Hardy gets a run with the title at some point in the future. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him win the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania.

World heavyweight champion Edge defeated Rey Mysterio: No surprises here, other than the fact that the crowd was behind Edge and booed Mysterio. This was a solid match with a cool finish, as Edge speared Mysterio in mid-air as he was going for a springboard.

JBL defeated Chris Jericho by disqualification: This was a good brawl and Jericho juiced heavily before getting disqualified for hitting JBL over the head with a chair. JBL did not try to block the chair shot, which had me scratching my head. Didn’t WWE ban unprotected chair shots to the head? Jericho’s post-match attack on JBL, in which he tried to choke him out with an electrical cord, was intense. There’s no doubt that this feud will continue at No Way Out and possibly build to a climax at WrestleMania.

Ric Flair defeated MVP: There’s no question that Flair needed a clean win here, because for the win-or-retire angle to work, he can’t keep getting fluke wins by countout and disqualification. However, I think this was almost too clean. For a guy who is on the verge of becoming a top-level star, MVP tapped out way too quickly in the figure-four. He at least should have held on in the hold a little longer. Better yet, I would have had Flair win with a small package out of nowhere. So far, the Flair story line has been disappointing. As I have said in the past, I think Flair’s final run should climax with him wrestling for the world title at WrestleMania, but it doesn’t seem to be going in that direction. To me, you either do the Flair retirement angle big or you don’t do it at all. On a side note, recently hired announcer Mike Adamle got off to a shaky start. Although he has a lot of experience in broadcasting, Adamle seemed nervous and actually referred to Jeff Hardy as “Jeff Harvey” before quickly correcting himself. WWE should try hiring announcers who have some knowledge of the product rather than guys with good cheekbones and “TV hair.”

Yeah, Cena showing up was a definite swerve. Right now, I still have to imagine UT winning the Elimination Chamber match because it's hard to imagine HHH winning it and wanting to challenge Edge for his belt on Smackdown!, and we all know that Cena will stay on Raw because they've never gotten rid of the spinning belt, which is synonymous with him.

On a side not, I have to agree with what you said about Coach being chosen as Smackdown announcer. Horrible choice! I actually have to remind myself that he's a commentator, his comments are so few and far between, and have little to no impact when he does make a comment. He was a little more vocal when he was put in a 3 man team with Styles and Lawler on Raw, but so far, he's added absolutely nothing to the Smackdown! shows. They might as well put Tazz back on Smackdown!

Heyy jeff hardy should of one MAN he is the best in the wwe superstarz i love you so much jeff i'm so sorry

Good thoughts - one thing you didn't mention was the cheers and jeers when Triple H and Cena were trading blows, akin to Undertaker Batista at Wrestlemania, with the crowd on Triple H's side. That seemed good. When all is said and done, the unpredicatability made it worthwhile.

As for Hardy, I suppose it makes sense with Cena returning - seemed a sudden ending and a shorter match than expected. Hardy for me deserves his place at the top level now and I hope he doesn't get relegated back.

Its a nice surprise that Cena won the Rumble instead of Triple H. But Cena must have the best doctors money can buy. I guess I should have known Cena was getting healthier when he was FUing Mr McMahon at the tribute to the troops show. He probably had the same doctor that treated Tom Brady's alledged hurt ankle. It a huge bonus for WWE to have Cena back to sell PPV and more Tshirts.

However, it is now dissapointing to know the John Cena will never ever ever lose at PPV era has begun again. I wonder if it is possible to move all the raw superstars to the smackdown and ecw brand so some of those guys have a realistic shot at winning a heavyweight title one day. Then Cena can have Raw all to himself rapping, acting, hanging out with the divas and beating jobbers like Colin Delaney every week. Because after Cena wins the WWE title after WM 24 he not losing that title unless he gets hurt again or until he decides to retire.

IT WAS COMPLETE CRAP THAT WWE WOULD LET ITS FANS BEIVE THAT JEFF HARDY WOULD WIN, THEN NOT MAKE HIM WIN!!!

You know I have to disagree as to John Cena's entrance... I mean the music hit and everyone was hot for alike a min. then people realzied that Trips wasnt gonna win and there was some booing too. actually look back there was alot of mixed feelings. I was truely upset Cena walked out and made a win like that. There was no real feeling to that match and I felt Hardy should have been on top last night.. but if he did win I guess that would have taken away Cena's little moment... I was so glad to be rid of John Cena off of wrestling and now that he has come back I find myself wondering if I will be toning back my interest as the Powers that be at WWE tend to have him hog the spot lite. I have been watching WWE/F since the 1980 yes I know thats not as long as you but either way I find that The little power plays and the politics seem to return there in the WWE bother me more and more every monday. Rumble was such a let down in the boring matches up to the Rumble itself. I understand that WWE has always tried to keep a face going after the title at Mania for the big good guy win.... I think the real good guy that worked really hard this year got the shaft... I agree about the possible Money in the Bank but thats another 8 months before Jeff gets a major story at Summer Slam.. so when do the real champions come to play... Does this mean that Trips is deff going heel because now we have another face in the ring... Maybe I would be more interested if Cena would turn Heel... that would be sports entertainment!

Side note... did the Y2J/JBL match kind of tell the people that Vince is not gonna cater to the Bennoit tragity anymore.. I mean unprotected chair shots... and hanging a person and chokin people out? That was quite a point to be made huh?

OMG! i love john cena and his return was outrageous and i really dint expect him to be back so quickly however he will reclaim what is rightfully his at wrestlemania and again become the wwe champion.
Love amber xx

Its been a long time since WWE has completely caught me off guard with something. Its amazing that even after a serious injury, the heat was still there for the guy. I just laughed was he and HHH traded blows to "Booo! Yaaa! Booo! Yaaa!"

And I am surprised, Kevin, that you didn't make mention of the promo Santino cut dissing New York and their sports teams. That was strong!

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the results of the rumble. I didn't like the way any of the matches turned out, except the one with Ric Flair and MVP, I was glad Ric Flair won, I think MVP is an egotistical jerk, it's my opinion. I wanted Rey Mysterio to take Edge out, I hate Edge, he is a jerk and too full of himself. I also wanted Jericho to win, I hate JBL, but that match was definitely intense none the less. I thought the rumble match was exciting. I kind of wanted Triple H to win, but I thought John Cena was cool and did well too. It was still fun to watch and I am still into wrestling. I just wish it would've gone a little differently.

man i am like so so so so so so so so so so HAPPY that my baby Randy Orton won. I mean i like Jeff Hardy and I have admired him but i love randy orton. I'm also happy that my other baby John Cena won the rumble. I was so shocked n i seriously thought that Triple h was goin to win. he is so so awesome but the real champ won. Also i'm happy that my other baby Chris Jericho beat the heck out of that fat JBL.

I think Jeff Hardy was robbed out of his title win just because John Cena is back. Don't get me wrong, I am a big John Cena fan but I think the only reason Jeff had to lose was because they (WWE big shots) wanted to continue the Orton/Cena conflict. Poor Jeff, he worked VERY HARD for a long time to get the chance at the WWE title and had to give it up for John Cena. Sorry but that is TOTALLY NOT FAIR AT ALL. Hang in there Jeff, your fans are still rooting for you.

Does anybody else have a problem with Finlay and Hornswoggle being disqualified?

After HHH came out at 29, who were you expecting as 30?

I was so dumbfounded. I was expecting Hogan or Vince at that point. I thought for sure Trips would be 30.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I was expecting Big Show.

Ok I have question with Cena bieng hurt was he really hurt or was this just all storyline

John Cena is my baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ric flair should just quit before they mess him up seriously and mvp is better than that. i just cant take randy orton as the champ its killing me aahhhhh!!! and edge rules so does batista but he didnt win so whatever. john cena triple h for Wrestlemania.(maybe randy)

I was just thinking about the Flair angle, and I would love to see him challenge at WrestleMania. Before the Rumble I checked WWE.com and realized that there were 4 or 6 unnamed entrants. I was thinking wouldnt it be great if Flair was entered by Mr McMahon after his match with MVP, but the Rumble was still under the win or go home rules? That way Flair could come out at a late number and win the whole thing, going on to challenge Edge.

Definitely a great surprise with Cena. Always love it when WWE pulls the wool over the wrestling site's eyes and there's no spoilers to "spoil" the show. Triple H - Cena at Mania could make for a classic matchup.

WAY 2 GO CENA

Mike Adamle is not quite the same without former American Gladiators co-host, Larry Csonka. I bet he never mispronounced the name of "Gemini."

And Santino lasting less than a minute was a shame.

Cena, is obviously back from his steroid suspension. It was good to see him last night. A steroid suspension would make sense why he was able to suposedly heal so quickly.

Some other things from the rumble I found interesting. It seems that some wrestlers had an off night, with moves being mis-calculated or just done wrong. There was a huge error in JBL vs Chris with a botched bulldog that the whole crowd caught. I believe Mystero did a pretty bad hurricanranna as well. On a good note, Santino Marella was gold on the mic again with laugh out loud comedy. Cena was a great surprize, as well as the old timers comming out durring the rumble, but the actual ending of the rumble seemed to be anticlimatic. I didn't enjoy the last over the top elimination. Also John Morisson had a great preformance in the rumble and his talent needs to be showcased more. He reminds me of a young HBK.

I didn't think it was all that surprising that Chavo Guerrero was in the match. Theoretically, he could have won the match and challenged for one of the other two titles at Wrestlemania...It was nice seeing Snuka and Piper come out, even if neither man has any business being in the ring anymore. But as long as you're going to put a legend or two in the Rumble, why not put Hacksaw Jim Duggan in? He can't wrestle either, but he is a member of the roster and you could play him up as a former Rumble winner...I also had an issue with Finlay and Hornswoggle being disqualified. If it was for jumping the count, that makes sense. But if he was really disqualified for using his shilleagh, that's BS. Watch the 2001 Rumble. Tommy Dreamer brings out an entire shopping cart full of weapons and there was a good 5 minute stretch of the Rumble which was basically a Hardcore match. I n the Rumble promo this year, WWE even used the footage from the '01 Rumble of Kane murdering The Honky Tonk Man with his guitar. The Big Red Machine certainly didn't get DQ'ed for that. WWE needs to try to maintain continuity in matters like this...I also wonder about bringing Mick Foley back. He was in the Rumble for about 10 minutes but he didn't really do anything. Why bother? He's a former WWE Champion who still has a large fan base and he was mostly ignored last night. In my opinion, every time Foley wrestles these days and loses pointlessly, it tarnishes his legacy a bit. It's one thing if he's in a feud, like he was with Flair a couple of years back, but just to bring him back for random matches, like the Rumble and the WWE Title match at Vengeance '07, seems kind of silly.

I thought the 2008 Royal Rumble was really good. I haven’t purchased a WWE pay per view in a while, and I was initially apprehensive about getting the Rumble in High Def because of the technical issues on Raw and ECW. There were no tech issues with the Royal Rumble in HD, plus there wasn’t a ten dollar price increase for the HD broadcast like the UFC. I guess the McMahon’s are more generous to their fans than the Fertitta’s.

The Flair vs. MVP match wasn’t a mat classic, but it’s nice to know Flair will be around for a little while longer.

The JBL and Jericho match was just a hard hitting brawl. It was “bowling shoe ugly” as Jim Ross likes to say.

The Mysterio vs. Edge finish was a good way to progress the Vicky Guerrero angle, with Mysterio unable to persevere with the odds stacked against him. It definitely has the “male soap opera” element to the story, but Edge and Vicky have been entertaining with something that looks ridiculous on paper.

The Orton vs. Hardy match was exciting due to Hardy pulling out all the stops, with Orton just barely winning. Hopefully they keep the feud going because I think the booking for their program has been well done.

The Rumble match was great. One of the contributing factors as to why the Rumble was so enjoyable was the lively MSG crowd. And the surprise of the night was the return of Cena. I just hope that WWE wasn’t too hasty with his return.

I thought 30 was going to be Ron Killings! I heard the Show was nursing an ankle injury and didn't expect to see him. But no Truth?! Denied!

With the 'Rowdy One' and 'Superfly' in the recent Royal Rumble, I have to ask if anyone knows who actually won the their feud in 1984. That same year the Sgt. Slaughter/Iron Sheik feud ended with boot camp and cage matches with the Sarge usually winning. As I recall ( showing my age 39 ), no real winner emerged with Piper/Snuka. WWF later in the feud introduced the "Tonga Kid" , a 'cousin' of Snuka who had matches with Piper which Piper won. Superfly was pretty bulked up and even as a Rowdy fan, I couldn't imagine him pinning Snuka. Was the feud ever decided? And what happened to the "Kid".

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: There really was no wnner in that feud. Piper was the one heel in WWE during that era that was never pinned -- even by Hogan.

last nite was crazy as always the wwe keeps u on the edge of our seats with thinking we know what is going to happen then things change at last minute... with that said i believe that in the hardy vs. orton match that jeff should have won orton is awsome and one of the best but i believe that jeff has worked his entire life hes accomplished soo much in the wwe and out of the wwe not taking nothing away from orton but hardy is one of the best wrestlers alive today and he will always be the best in my heart.. he wrestles for the fans he deserves his time

way to go cena now take back your belt

jeff hardy should have won

ALL DA BAD PEOPLE WON EXCEPT AND RIC FLAIR

Come on, the only reason Cena was there was because his Steroid suspension was over. Why hasn't anyone mentioned his HGH Norwich days.

Well, I was severely disappointed in the Orton/Hardy match. I mean, come on! Jeff Hardy deserves to be top dog. At least for a little while. For crying out loud, he was the perfect one to beat Randy Orton. Next to Shawn Micheals, Jeff is my favorite!!!

In all honesty, I was really disapointed that they didn't give the belt to Jeff. Even if they had him lose it at No way out, it still would have been better than what seems to be a "Filler" match before he drops to a mid-high card level again. WWE really messed that one up. Jeff has been getting amazing pops lately and WWE needs that. Raw just ended and Cena was getting some major heat from the crowd. I don't see this Orton/Cena thing really being that great. Hopefully WWE decides something soon to fix this because they need Jeff at the top for more reasons than one. Looks like HHH is the favorite for No Way out, but maybe the powers up top will pull a smart move and let Jeff get a re-match at WM24. Doubt it, but we'll see.

dude , i watched that lastg night , and it was awesome ! i started watching wrestling after john cena got hurt , and i was rele shocked when he came out . he is SOOO fine ! !

but it was pretty cool .

Pretty good assessment. My boyfriend took me to MSG for the Rumble as a Christmas present and I'd like to let you know that the biggest pop of the night hands down was for Piper. That was a bigger surprise than Cena. He's my all time fave, but the sound was deafening when his music hit, so it's not personal opinion clouding my judgement of that.

I totally expected Big Show to be the last one out too. But I understand why they did what they did, and from what I hear Big Show is dealing with some injuries right now. I'm glad Cena's back because he ALWAYS puts on a good, solid, exciting match.

It may seem odd, but from watching the match in person, it looked like Orton got hurt at one point, and I wonder if that is why they ended it so abruptly. I haven't heard anything about him being injured, and he looked fine last night on Raw, but it certainly looked like something went wrong at one point. I'm very disappointed that Jeff's momentum was stopped dead like that, and I can only imagine something incredible will happen in the Elimination Chamber match to put him back into the groove.

Thanks!

It's a shame that Jeff Hardy isn't WWE champion, and now i've seen the line-up for No Way Out's Elimination Chamber, you can see WWE pushing him back again, which to me is outrageous, as in my eyes he's a far champion than any of the past 4 or 5 holders for these reasons:

1. He's a perfect role model, he doesn't promote unneccesary violence (albeit the 'I'm GOnna Take You Out' Remark).

2. He's talks with his wrestling. After all is said and done, that's what it's all about. The smack talk you get from Orton and Cena etc. just gets stupid sometimes. Hardy can have a real good dig at someone, then deliver with his crazy high flyer style!

3. When was the last underdog champ? Ages ago! People love an underdog to win, even if it's only slightly underdog.

4. He overcame sever Drug Addictions as well as some depression, as result he has;;;;

5. Worked his **** off! He has been back a while now and is easily the best man for the titles, and when Orton said 'Only 2 Men Have Worn both Intercontinental and WWE titles at the same time' i thought they would make Hardy number 3 in tribute to his hard work.

Thats me done :)

John Cena won..whoopy do..I did like him but it seems he just gets smashed time and time again..to come up with one FU then its all over for his opponent.

Jeff Hardy should have won his match, hes more of a wrestler than Cena. I'm sorry I'll start watching the competition..atleast they aren't predictable..I still like the Boo Yay..Boo Yay..The writers have to know Cena is not liked as a hero wanna be..harsh but true.

What happened to bobby Lashley i thought he would be #30 of perhaps a brock leasner return

Well it certainly caught everyone off guard. but for what its worth here are my thoughts regarding this years rumble.
Cena's back. Was it an injury? I'm guessing not. WWE have put a lot of money into WWE films lately, its been no secret that they had/have a couple of films lined up for Cena and Austin. With the writers strike going on, and a lot of talk about an actors strike they might have pulled him out of action to shoot the film.

Now he's back, he's won the rumble, and earned his title shot at Wrestlemania. or has he? on Raw they announced it would be at No Way Out. Is that instead, or as well as. It wouldn't make much sense to not have the rumble winner in the mania main event seeing as its such a big angle every year. But it does makes sense seeing how far over Jeff Hardy has become to keep him at the top, and keep his struggle with Orton ongoing. So maybe, just maybe, we will see a Cena loss at a PPV and Jeff to win the elimination chamber. That would be a good way to continue building a rivalry that has really caught everyones attention. Cena could then invoke his title shot earned at the rumble and they could have a triple threat or maybe even a fatal four way including HHH depending on how they finish the chamber match.
Or is that just wishfull thinking?

This also leaves the door open for some really good and interesting matches for Mania.
The Smackdown elimination chamber has been announced, along with an Edga Vs Rey rematch.
Suppose for a moment that they let Rey win the title for Mania.
Then focus on the 2nd chamber match.
If Batista were to win, two friends, one prize, Batista turning heal? would be a good angle going into the main event. It would also free the Undertaker up for a match against HBK. And leave Edge in the Money in the Bank match to really make it work and give it the big moment that it needs each year before he comes back into the picture around summerslam.

No i'm getting carried away with my imagination. There is no way any of that will happen. It'll be Cena winning, HHH winning, Jeff relegated back down, and maybe continuing his feud with Orton there. The Cena show has returned and they'll need him on top to promote the movie.

i was just starting to enjoy the cena free raw. i was a fan of his till they turned him into superman who couldent lose, now its just stupid, he won the rumble, he's gonna beat orton, and no one will be able to take the title away from him. it makes me sick. oh, and jeff got screwed!!!

Kind of funny story: My best friend and I went to the Royal Rumble at MSG in January 08. We decided to go to the Wrestlemania Fan Axxess event early that morning because Ric Flair was signing autographs. Next to Flair at the autograph table was his wife, but I didn't really get a good look at her face.

Later that night at the Rumble, right before the Flair/MVP match, a woman in a brown dress was being escorted by security to her seat. She passed right by us (our seats were on the floor). After the match, the woman and the guard walked by us again, but this time my friend spotted her and said "Hey, that's Ric Flair's wife." So the both of us proceeded to shout "Mrs. Flair!" which prompted all the other guys around us to do the same. She acknowledged us and smiled.

And that was the greatest moment of my life, except for my wedding day...which hasn't happened yet...and probably never will because I'm writing a comment on a wrestling blog at 12:30 on a Saturday night...or early Sunday morning...whatever. The point is I should be getting laid right now but I'd rather write about a sport involving men in spandex. Weird.
