Kevin Nash’s tired act

Some thoughts on last night’s TNA Impact:

Kevin Nash got less than two minutes screen time, but he was on long enough to make suckers out of TNA management and any fan who pays to see him “perform.”

The show-long theme was that Christian Cage was searching for a tag-team partner to face Kurt Angle and Robert Roode, and when he went to recruit Nash, “Big Kev” was sound asleep in the back. When Cage woke up Nash and asked him to be his partner, Nash said that he was “too busy doing what I do best: sit around, do nothing and get paid.”

The real-life perception of Nash is exactly that, so the TNA creative team – this had to be the work of Vince Russo – was attempting to be clever for “smart” fans. However, it only makes TNA look silly for paying a guy like Nash to sit around and do nothing, and it’s an insult to the fans who are contributing to Nash’s salary.

I really don’t blame Nash, though. Obviously, his goal is to make the most money he can by doing as little as possible. It might not be admirable, but if there are wrestling companies stupid enough to accommodate him, more power to him. I’ve just never understood how Nash keeps getting those in charge of wrestling companies to drink his Kool-Aid.

Nash seemed to have the same selfish, lazy attitude in WCW. He was far from the only one, and it’s that mentality that helped ruin the company. I was there. I remember. Why don’t Russo and Jeff Jarrett? …

Cage is the best performer in TNA right now. However, his babyface turn could be booked better. The fans were jeering Christian at times during his promo – which isn’t what you want when he’s engaging in a verbal battle with Angle and Roode.

I like the fact that Christian still is cocky and self-centered – as The Rock demonstrated in the past, cool babyfaces with heel tendencies can be very entertaining – but the key is to subtly suggest to fans that Christian is worthy of their cheers. This can be accomplished through the announcers’ commentary, saying things such as, “Christian is full of himself, but he’s not afraid to speak his mind and you can’t deny his talent in the ring.” By the end of the show, the fans did seem to be with Christian, who was effectively portrayed as a man with no allies who battled courageously in a handicap match against Angle and Roode before losing. …

The more I see Roode, the more I am convinced that he has main-event heel written all over him. TNA is doing a good job of getting him in angles with the top guys. Soon, he needs to start defeating some top guys. …

Jim Mitchell was great on the microphone when he confronted Abyss, and it was good to see Judas Mesias back – I think that character has potential. However, with media stories out there suggesting concussions as a factor in the Benoit tragedy, it was stupid and irresponsible to have Abyss take that many unprotected chair shots. …

Samoa Joe cut a very strange promo in which he spewed profanities and complained about being low-balled on his contract. First, the era of the potty-mouthed wrestler is over. Second, isn’t Chris Harris already doing a complainer gimmick? Third, Joe needs to lose that hat he was wearing. …

I wasn’t all that intrigued by the Feast or Fired story line – which finally played out – but I do think that Jeremy Borash has a future as a game-show host if this wrestling thing doesn’t work out. …

Kaz really needs to improve on promos or he will never reach his full potential. …

For years, WWE, WCW and TNA tried in vain to find a pretty girl who could conduct a decent backstage interview. Finally, there appears to be one capable of doing the job – Crystal. She has a good look, speaks well, appears comfortable on camera and, most importantly, adds something to the segments without taking anything away from the wrestlers. …

On the flip side, Hermie Sadler needs to step away from the microphone. And what’s with him stealing former WWE announcer Kevin Kelly’s moniker?

I think Kevin Nash just has friends in the right places. For whatever else you might say about him, the guy is usually pretty funny. He keeps the people that sign his paychecks laughing, and then he laughs all the way to the bank while they're distracted.

You have to love the infinite wisdom of TNA booking. Low Ki (I prefer this over the stupid TNA-trademarked moniker) asks for his release in real life, and gets it. On Impact, he loses his briefcase to Chris Daniels, which later is revealed to contain a pink slip. So in kayfabe, you have no explanation for Low Ki's eventual disappearance, and you have a storyline firing "FOREVER" of Daniels, who is in actuality still under TNA contract.

These guys make my head hurt. I won't even discuss giving the Road Dogg another tag title shot.

I wish Nash would ride off into the sunset with Scott hall. They both look old and out of shape. Kaz should be given a chance to work out his problems and see where he can go with some coaching. I never liked Christpher Daniels anyway so I'm glad he is the one that got fired. But it was odd seeing Scott Steiner getting an X-division title shot. Now if they can get the belt away from Team 3D. I can almost see a reunion of AMW tag team. Seems as if Chris Harris and James Storm are going nowhere in their storylines. Every time Christian Cage opens his mouth I can't help but laugh at him. He is so good with the mic. I wish they would put Samoa Joe in the championship hunt and feel like he is getting screwed over not being used that much lately. I agree about the Robert Roode sory, he should be getting some matches against the top guys soon but does he have to constantly keep putting down Ms. Brooks. Why can't he dump her and bring in the fan tjhat has been following him all over? I mean I love Traci Brooks and have seen her wrestle in the indies and she is okay but not spectacular. so she would fir in perfect with the TNA Knockouts division. I agree Abyss should never have taken so many chair shots but I think he insists on doing that plus that he is constantly getting cut up all the time. But what I miss the most about TNA is that Sting is no longer involved. Sting has been my favorite over the past years. Maybe WWE might bring him in for a short run and he might be the one to end Ric Flair's career around Wrestlemania. Flair and Sting always had a good storyline and feel that Flair has always been on top of his game when he wrestles Sting. Maybe that is the real reason why Sting has not signed a new contract with TNA. We just have to wait and see.

I hate Abyss. He is a complete knockoff of Mankind and Undertaker.

Besides perhaps AJ Styles, Kurt Angle and maybe 1 or two other people, Christopher Daniels is perhaps one of the elite players in TNA. He is a great performer and has good skills on the stick. It was a horrible idea to put him back with Elix Skipper and Low-Ki because his character doesn't reflect the other characters in anyway and humanizes his character. They should have continued his push at a high level storyline with Sting because the promos and the storys leading to the match were good. They really dropped the ball and went completly backwards with Daniels by putting him back with Triple X.

Nash is lazy, but he always gets a big pop. Wrestling is a business, so they are going to use Nash if they have the opportunity. It makes good business sense.

As for the criticism of TNA/Russo writing Nash's laziness into the storyline, all I can say is do you really think TNA fans are so dumb that either:

a) They used to think Nash was a HARD WORKER and now their dreams have been crushed by learning the truth

or

b) Wrestling fans think the character on TV is the same as he is in real life (in this case he is).

But do you see what I mean? To say the fans would be disappointed to learn that "Nash is lazy" is a really weak argument, for many reasons. Not the least being that what a wrestlers "character" does on screen usually doesn't mean its true.

I mean, does anyone really believe the Undertaker is a zombie, a satan worshipper, invincible, or whatever crap they have concocted about his character on-screen?

Disclaimer: I am the ex-webmaster of Vince Russo's website.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: In regard to your first point, what does a good pop have to do with business? They are two different things. The fact is that Nash has never been a draw on his own. He was one of the worst -- if not the worst -- drawing WWE champions ever. He did draw in WCW during the first two years of the NWO, but that was an ensemble act.
As to your second point, I really don't follow your logic. It has nothing to do with TNA fans being dumb. It's the people who make decisions in TNA that are dumb. Why do they think it's cute that someone on the roster flaunts that he doesn't work hard and gets paid well anyway? Nash plays them for fools in real life, and then they write it into the script. And it won't draw a dime, so what's the point?

I would just like to say a couple things here. In regards to the Kevin Nash bashing, Kevin Nash was and is probably the greatest "big man" to ever step into the ring as far as the total package is concerned. His charisma is off the charts and his in ring ablities are at least better than John Cenas. Granted Nash is obviously a little old at this point. All im saying if I was management at TNA i Would certainly not let a man like Nash go. On to more serious concerns I have not ever been "very" impressed with TNA because of the fact that I can never tell if someone there is supposed to be face or heel. The writing is horrible, they have some amazing wrestlers though.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: We'll just have to agree to disagree on Nash. I think Undertaker is a far better big man (and he can still go in the ring). As for the comparison to Cena as a worker, Nash makes Cena look like Ric Flair (in his prime).
