Candice Michelle situation mishandled?

Ever since Candice Michelle suffered a broken collarbone and a concussion during her match with Beth Phoenix on Raw Monday night, I have been receiving comments and e-mails from people saying how appalled and upset they were at the actions of referee Mike Chioda and Phoenix.

After Michelle slipped and took a nasty spill on her neck and shoulder, Chioda instructed Phoenix to drag a semi-conscious Michelle out of the corner and cover her for the pin. Phoenix was reckless in the way she pulled her, prompting Chioda to tell her to take it easy.

The point that a number of people have made is that it was extremely careless and dangerous to move Michelle at all, and it could have resulted in a much more serious injury. In retrospect, I agree that the right call would have been to immediately stop the match and call for medical attention. When a person has taken a blow to the head and/or spine, they should never be moved.

But, in all fairness, it’s easy for us to play Tuesday morning quarterback and say what should or shouldn’t have been done. The fact is that this was live television, and the mind-set in pro wrestling is always to finish the match.

We’ve seen John Cena and Triple H continue on in matches after suffering a torn pectoral muscle and a torn quadriceps, respectively. Remember when Steve Austin suffered temporary paralysis after having his spine compressed from a sloppy tombstone piledriver by Owen Hart at SummerSlam 1997? Or when Brock Lesnar botched a shooting star press and landed on his head at WrestleMania XIX? Both men somehow finished those matches.

Perhaps if Chioda had it to do over again, he would handle the situation differently. Fortunately, Michelle escaped without suffering a life-altering injury. She is scheduled to return to action in six-to-eight weeks.

Speaking of injuries, Matt Hardy, who needed 35 stitches in his head when Rey Mysterio’s knee brace caught him during a move at Tuesday’s Smackdown taping, is expected to wrestle MVP at Cyber Sunday as planned, wrestlingobserver.com reported.

Hopefully she's fine and maybe WWE learns something from this. I'd hope that the refs are trained in what to do in situations like this, but I don't know about the wrestlers. Having a meeting with everyone and WWE's doctors laying down some guidelines would be good.

When I saw Candice slip, the thought of paralysis never crossed my mind. Maybe I’m just naïve, but I thought that she was only knocked unconscious. A concussion is serious, but not life altering in the same way as a fractured spine. I was much more concerned when Jeff Hardy fell on his head in a match with Kennedy a while back. Or like you mentioned, I thought Lesnar was messed up bad for sure at Wrestlemania 19.
However, I am concerned that wrestling fans will become desensitized to the real dangers of rasslin’, and if a similar situation occurs again with a more serious outcome, fans may expect everything to be fine. One criticism I do have with WWE is how they booked Finlay to be placed on a stretcher in his match with Rey Mysterio after falling off of the apron at No Mercy. I thought it was dumb to do an angle like that because then when somebody gets hurt for real, it seems like it’s just part of the show.

Although the video was taken off of Youtube for copyright violations, I watched the full match and after listening to everything and observing what happened, being a former wrestler I can explain what went on.

Referee Mike Chioda checked on her calling her and if you listen, it was clearly heard, he grabs Candice's hand and asked her to squeeze it which she clearly did. Then soon after, he can be clearly heard saying "move her out and cover her". He said it twice, instructing Beth Phoenix to continue with the match.

I think this shows that the refs are trained to take a leadership type of role in this case. I'm sure if she didn't respond, Mike Chioda could just end the match by "referee stop".

Although it looked bad on TV, Beth Phoenix really pulled Candice by her arm. The right hand that "pulled" Candice by the hair was all smoke and mirrors. Candice is obviously light and thin.... Beth is muscular. It probably didn't take much strength to pull Candice like that with her arm. The hair thing is just illusion. Its all part of making a "fake sport" look as real as possible.

Beth Phoenix stayed in character and played the heel role by grabbing the arm and hair, and then making the cover for the cheap win. Typical heel tactics.

So in any case, I think both the ref and Beth done well in this situation to finish the match, but not until making sure that Candice was okay.

I am a wrestling fan and someone who enjoys interveiws with the wrestlers themselves.
Though I agree with the assessment that it probably wasn't the best idea to move Candice Michelle, it is my understanding that the rules state that unless both wrestlers are incompassitated medical assistance can't be call during a match. The only exception to that rule is if the said wrestler is compleltely knocked out.
Hense the reason for Beth having to pin Candice.
Candice was still talking and was slightly moving. Therefore Candice wasn't completely knocked out.
If you look at the history of the WWE matches you can see this rule in play.
When Stone Cold hurt his neck he could still talk and had limited movment. The problem they had was that Cold had to pin Owen and win the title, thats why the match stalled and Cold got the soft pin.
The same goes for Brock Lesner, he was still moving and talking therefore able to continue the match.
It was obvious that Beth would win the match as the ref just told her to pin Candice.
If Candice wasn't moving then the match would've been stopped. You can see in other matches where it goes the other way. In the Matt Hardy Edge match, Matt hardy had stopped talking and though still moving had absolutly no idea where he was so the match was cancelled.
These wrestlers push themselves to the limit almost every match. In most cases it is my understanding that if they injur themselves it is their call if they stop unless the ref deems they unable to continue.
I think it is unfair to completely piont the finger at Chioda. Though he did get Beth to pin Candice you can see that he was extermely upset with Beth after the pin and kept yelling at her to get out of the ring. Presonally I think that if Candice had suffered worse injuries as a result of the move the blame should be put on Beth, as she was the one who so roughly moved her.

The same thing happened during the Mickie James vs. Melina Falls Count Anywhere match. When Mickie botched a hurricanrana off the top rope, she fell on her neck too. Melina also continued to pin her to end the match. But luckily, Mickie James wasn't injured at all.

You can tell that Candice wasn't all together there. The right thing would have been to stop the match right there and then. To make matters worse was that once Candice was in the back, Stephanie McMahon was pouring a bottle of water over her. I think was a little premature to that to someone who was injured. I understand while the WWE was in Europe that the exact samething happened Candice slipping off the top turn buckle so think what you want some of this might have been a work. Storylines often show a wrestler getting hurt and then sell their injuries as part of the storyline so they can go take part in a movie or TV show or perhaps need some time off. But after watching this over a few times I think Candice's injuries are legit. 4-6 weeks seems about right to get over a broken collarbone but a concussion can linger on much longer than that.

You say about Brock Lesnar and the botched shooting star press, but that was a deliberate miss, and it didn't seem he hurt himself by mistake for real right?

Candice Michelle tripped, it wasn't a silly move for her to do. If she was meant to fall off the ropes, then she has been trained and practiced the move numerous times.

However, The referee telling beth PHoenix to move Candice Michelle to pin her was extremely silly, anyone with any sense would have not done that, no excuses. The fact Beth didn't think either was rather silly.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: Not sure I understand your Lesnar comment, but I can assure that you that he did not intentionally land on his head and knock himself silly.

Beth was careless when she moved Candice by first trying to drag her by the hair, and then dropping her hard on the back of her head after yanking her to the middle of the ring. This is one of the ugliest and most careless incidents documented in WWE/WWF history.

i really do think that it was a dangerous move by beth phoenix it was really terrible what she did to candice the actions of the referee was unspeakable actions to tell pheonix to move candice & makethe pin when phoenix pulled candice she could have made he injury more seriopus i wish candice michelle a good & healthy recovery she is the bestwwe superstar she will be the next trish stratus

I am so tired of everyone babying her. Just because she posed for playboy. If it were Mickie James or Melina no one would give a darn, right? Yes, that's exactly right. She has absoloutely NO talent. She is NOT the next Trish Stratus, Trish could wrestle, Candice cannot. She dosn't deserve to be any kind of champion let alone women's champion. She never deserved it, But They made Melina job her. So what if she broke her clavicle, compare that to when Lita broke her neck, she could have died. Now you'll find how ridiculous it sounds. Candice just sucks.

RESPONSE FROM KEVIN ECK: I can't speak for everyone, but I can tell you without hesitation that whether Candice ever posed for Playboy did not enter my mind when I saw her get hurt. I would have been concerned had any worker, male or female, landed awkwardly on their head and neck the way she did. Whether she is or isn't the next Trish Status is totally missing the point.

All candice was doing is her job, thats whats she is meant to do.She took a risk for the championship. The championship means everything to her infact the championship means everything to all the wrestlers. But what beth did was plain stupid. No offence but this is my opinion.

candice michelle does not suck you people she is a very good and talented woman candice michelle is not trish stratus every one is different every one has there own personality candice is a sports lover she loves sports she loves basketball i love basketball it is my favorite sport i bet if you people met here one day you wouldnt say she sucked than. by the way she is better than trish stratus trish is a bad wrestler
