Earth to Mendenhall: time to come home

If you're a rational person and believe sports is a microcosm of the real world, the recent Twitter remarks about Osama bin Laden from Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall have to make you cringe.

Despite the huge body of evidence linking bin Laden to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the airliner that crashed in Shanksville, Pa., Mendenhall apparently remains unconvinced the al-Quaida leader was involved.

"We'll never know what really happened," he tweeted recently. "I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."

He also castigated Americans for celebrating the death of bin Laden: "What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can hate a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side. . ."

Apparently, it doesn't matter to Mendenhall that we have heard bin Laden speak -- via video and audio-tapes -- urging his followers to kill Americans and destroy the U.S.

And apparently it doesn't matter to Mendenhall that dozens -- if not hundreds -- of scientists and engineers have explained precisely how a skyscraper can buckle and collapse if a jetliner loaded with fuel crashes into it.

What else can you say to a man who -- at least metaphorically -- refuses to open his eyes?

Thankfully, Steelers president Art Rooney II released a ststement Tuesday basically disavowing Mendenhall's remarks and wondering what planet he's on.

One thing's clear: Mendenhall's remarks have created a furor in Pittsburgh. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts to it.

He plays in Bmore on the 10th anniversary of 9/11....

Hopefully the crowd gives him what he deserves.

Wow--this guy is a moron. I hope Ray Lewis pounds him on 9/11/11 (if there is a 2011 football season).

Talk about making yourself a target. The Steelers don't play in New York this season and it's a good thing for Mendenhall.

I believe you're a bit hasty judging Rashard Mendennoballs.

In a similar manner, I could never understand why my parents hated Adolph Hitler. After all, I never heard him speak, except in recordings (I was 3 months old when he met his untimely death in a Berlin bunker).

After all, I could never understand how my parents could celebrate someone's death (Hitler). We never heard Hitler's side of the story. Perhaps he had a valid reason for murdering 6 million Jews, countless gypsies, Catholic priests, Russian POW's and homosexuals in the gas chambers. In fact, Mendennoballs probably was not convinced that Hitler was the leader of the third reich.

Rashard... stick to your guns! Remember, if it is incredible, it probably never happened.

Freakin' idiot.

"I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style."

Does Mendenhall have a background in civil engineering or materials science? I guess his tinfoil hat is not visible under his football helmet.

Should we really write an article every time a professional athlete says something dumb on Twitter?

I disagree with him on the substance of what he said and obviously and I think most reasonable people think his Oliver North theory does not comport with facts.

As for a celebrating his death, I disagree with what he says. But I think most people feel a little strange beings so happy someone died. Does not mean you can't be happy about it? No.

More conceptually, do we really want to condemn every athlete who goes against the grain on Twitter by writing a column without insight that just states the obvious conventional wisdom? If I get a vote - and I know I don't - I vote no.

And this is coming from a regular reader.

I think Ray Lewis breaking his shoulder caused brain damage. The NFL needs to protect players from brain injuries induced via shoulder injuries.

Maybe we can dissect his brain after he dies of stupidity in his 40's and benefit all of man kind.

All joking aside, when I first heard this I was expecting it to be a Christian forgiveness message. Then the crazy conspiracy and defense of OBL non-sense. As a Christian, you can forgive and turn the other cheek, but you absolutely cannot excuse OBL's horrific actions. Not only is this kid uninformed, he is also a jack*** deluxe. I suppose that comes with fame. The same can be said about most of HollyWeird.

Are we talking about Donald Trump? Sounds like it!

Truthers come in all stripes and colors.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. But for goodness sake keep these comments to yourself-it serves no purpose putting these ridiculous statements out there. Geez! Some people just have no build-in editing gene.

Has Mendenhall been playing without a helmet?

I dont know... sound to me like the other end of the spectrum of Luke Scott and his birther conspiracy theories...

the same people that support the birther 'conspiracy' will probably lamblast Mendenhall for thinking a conspiracy is possible surrounding 9/11 smh...

What type of an intellect do you expect considering the area he represents? Obviously the pop from Ray Ray dislodged more than just his shoulder.

Almost 1500 engineers and architects question the official story. http://www.ae911truth.org/

Come on, everybody knows that Osama commanded 9-11 from his underground cave fortress in the Afghan mountains. Don't they watch TV in Pittsburgh? Next he'll be tweeting that the soon-to-be released videos of dead Osama are fakes, and that Osama's actually been dead for years. Some people are just not with the times.

Good article....

Mendenhall's comments about people being joyous because another human being was murdered are not irrational comments at all

I may not agree with his conspiracy references but as a Christian i totally understand where he is coming from about death and the lack of respect for human life.

We should all take a moment and put tis hold thing into perspective. If Bin Laden's murder and our joy over it brings about more death and destruction, would we be happy> I don't think so, and I pray this is not the case.

Give peace a chance.

So James Harrison does not understand why he isn't invited to the white house every year but only when he wins the Superbowl. He uses this as his reason for not attending his own celebration because his own feelings are more important than the President's Job...Mendenhall says something at a time when we should all be celebrating just because he's watched the movie Loose Change a few too many times. (listen i watched it too. when i was in the 8th and 9th grade. very compelling, but then I realized: who's fact checking the director? I grew up a little. Mendenhall your older than me and never had that happen). Rashard is willing to defend a man who has done a lot of evil in this world whether he believes he had something to do with 9/11 or not. But Mendenhall is not willing to stand up and defend the families that were torn apart that day. Wow what a bunch of uneducated, unpatriotic, idiots. For being the "class" of the NFL they really don't like to show it when it matters.

Its unfortunate when some of these athletes feel the need to open their mouth and cram their feet into them. Run the ball, you tend to do that well. Do not comment on current events, you make yourself look stupid.

Now we can not only give a Rapist the welcome he deserves when he visits us with the Steelers but we now also have an idiot who sympathizes with Islamist extremists. Those who echo "Rashard"'s views on 9/11 conspiracy often think Israelis played a key role in 9/11. I know the Sun will follow up with specific inquiries to the Steeler in-house expert on 9/11 as to the justification Islamists have for their killing spree pre- and post-9/11.
I don't know who is worse-the Rapist or the 9/11 Denier and ben laden sympathizer.

What a Richard Head! No wonder he plays for Pittsburgh!

Note to ray Lewis, on the next tackle of Mendenhal, because you did break his shoulder before, get an extra step and take the extra hit. The 15 yards will be worth it! We will owe you one. Now that is taking one for the city!

Maybe when Ray hit him a few years ago and broke his collarbone he messed up his brain. What an idiot.

Yet,

Steeler fans will cheer this dude on like nothing happened.

How dare the city of Pittsburgh notice 9/11 on opening day 2011, then cheer for this fool (if they do).

Yes, in America... you're allowed the freedom of speech. That doesn't mean you have to root for a person like this however.

Let him make his comments to a relative of someone who passed 10 years years ago. Let him make his comments to any decent human being.

You can fine or suspend a player for taking drugs or doing something detrimental to the league.... but you are helpless against someone who obviously hates the country that allows him to make millions of dollars for playing football.

We'll be watching Pittsburgh. We'll be watching how (as citizens) you react to this guy.

Of all the teams in the NFL this idiot happens to play in Pittsburg just a few miles away from where one of the 4 hijacked planes crashed and burned with over 200 people on it. I'm a Ravens fan so naturally I can't stand the Steelers but I know the fans nor the front office will let this guy get away with this. CUT HIM!

I'm sure wasn't upset when people rioted after the Rodney King beating.

Call in Seal team to deal with him.

Read the FBI's most wanted poster on Bin Laden...9/11 isn't mentioned...Mendenhall should have keep his comments to himself

I dont see anything wrong with questioning the mainstream media,,,just because CNN or MSNBC says it, doesn't mean its the truth

The Steelers need to consider whether they want a man like Rashard Mendenhall to remain on the team. His comments are reprehensible and border on traitorous. Please, do not sweep this under the rug. This is a sensitive and very painful subject for Americans. AMERICANS.

KEVIN PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS I KNOW YOUR APART OF THE MEDIA AND YOUR TOWING THE COMPANY LINE BUT PLEASE NOT EVERY 1 IS STUPID!!! THE ONLY EVIDENCE LINKING OSAMA IS THE US GOV AND WITH ALL THE LIES THE GOV TELLS DAILY I MEAN REALLY!! THE TOWERS WERE BUILT TO WITHSTAND SEVERAL PLANES FLYING INTO IT WHY DID IT FALL DEMOLITION STYLE AND IF YOU CHOOSE TO BELIEVE WHAT YOUR MEDIA WANTS US TO BELIEVE THEN WHAT ABOUT BUILDING 7? IT WAS AROUND THE CORNER AND FELL ANY WAY DEMOLITION STYLE SO WERE JUST SUPPOSE TO DISREGARD ALL THOSE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT BOMBS GOING OFF ON THE BOTTOM FLOORS ? AND A PLAN HITTING THE PENTAGON I MEAN COME ON. DON'T EVEN POST NONSENSE LIKE THIS AS FAR AS I MA CONCERNED RASHAD IS TOTALLY IN TOUCH WITH REALITY!!! IS ASKING YOU TO THINK AND RESEARCH WHATS WRONG WITH THAT IF THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH IT WILL WITHSTAND ALL INQUIRY

Too many hits to the head for this Steeler!

if you think this is bad,how about players from both the phillies and mets standing around, emotionless, as fans chanted USA,USA!!
they're ball players, nobody ever accused them of being smart

Hey everyone here's a tip on how to completely alienate yourself: do what mendenhall just did.

Sports is a microcosm of society in that everyone has an opinion. Some are mis-informed. Some refuse to believe the truth. Some only belive in conspiracy. Some will never learn and keep doing/saying the same things repeatedly expecting change.

A lot of people may disagree but, I don't beleive his comments are as crazy and out of bounds as everyone is making them out to be. If you really think about it, it's not normal to celebrate a person's death there's only one person I know of who's death is celebated. And yes I have heard is it really possible for a plane to do that much damage to a skyscraper?? No I don't think he's taken away in anyway what the american troops did for our country nor is he not showing remorse for the families of the thousands of lives lost in New York, Pennsylvania and in the military he's just voicing his opinion and if I remember in america you are entiled to that!!!

I`m going to play devils advocate here. I`m a Ravens diehard who can`t stand the steelers but I don't believe that Mendemhall is nearly the Anti-American scum that he's being portrayed as. 9/11, despite the horrific nature of it, remains a mystery to this day. There are still too many questions to raise suspicion over the events that day. The American government does not have a track record worthy of blind trust, as anybody who's ever read a history book beyond a grade 9 level could tell you. You can still be an American patriot and question the status quo. If you are interested in seeing a broader perspective on the events of that day I strongly urge you to watch the movie 'Zeitgeist'
