We're not No. 1! We're not No. 1!
Oh, you gotta love this town.
I say that because something interesting is happening on the radio sports-talk shows today: Ravens fans are furiously down-playing the team's chances of going all the way this season.
Yes, the fact that so many NFL pundits are picking the Ravens to go to the Super Bowl is apparently freaking out some Ravens fans.
As we all know, Ravens fans are much happier being the underdog, rather than the favorite.
They love feeding off the idea that the entire NFL is out to get the Ravens, that the referees are out to hose them, and that the national media gives them no respect.
But now with so many NFL experts singing the Ravens' praises, Ravens fans apparently feel it'll somehow jinx the team this fall.
Hence, the concerted effort to take to the air-waves today and tell the world -- and other Ravens fans: 'Hey, our team's not that good, we're being ranked too high, let the Ravens play a few games before we anoint them as a Super Bowl-bound team.'
What's the old line about not being able to handle prosperity?
Hell, it was probably written by a Ravens fan.

I'm sure the Ravens have a good chance to go to the Super Bowl, but the Ravens also have a decent chance of not going as well.
On paper this is the best offense to wear the Ravens uniform, but the defense is now suspect and that's not something Ravens fans are accustom to.
Then there are the coaching blunders of last year and none of the pundits have factored that into the equation.
It's well known that a good offense is the best chance to get to the playoffs, but it's defense that will most likely get you through the playoffs.
Then there's the fact that most individuals opining in blogs and on talk radio tend to focus on the negative instead of the positive. With this as a context it becomes obvious as to why it seems that many Ravens are "freaking out".
After the way the O's have played this year a 9 and 7 Ravens looks very satisfying, so if they are still playing in February 2011 then life in Baltimore will be pretty sweet. A least this is the way I see things.

My daughter walked up to me with a Magic Meatball and said, "Ask the Meatball a question."
"Will the Ravens win the Super Bowl this season," I asked the omniscient toy and waited for its answer with the same anticipation I usually have when one of those trash TV news shows teases an upcoming segment about "the latest star to have a naughty homemade video surface."
The Meatball's answer came swiftly and without an ounce of compassion: "The answer is No."
I saw that as a good sign.

Because we all know how clueless the national sports media is. Its like the kiss of death if these idiots pick us.

It's not just an idea or a theory. The anti-Bmore conspiracy is VERY old. Remember that loudmouth Howard Cosell? How 'bout the calls in that Steelers game a while back with the...uh...imaginary touchdown? Does the name Jeffrey Maier or the headline "Angel in the Outfield" mean anything to you? Mmmhmmm.
Ya hear what I'm saying, man?
Roll the "Twilight Zone" music and cue the Men in the Black - it will happen again when they get the chance....You can bet on it.
