MASN, give us a break with bad O's commercials
The recent four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers notwithstanding, it's hard to watch the Orioles on MASN. Now it's even harder to watch the commercials.
The one that's really driving me insane now is the new Luna commercial.
Let's face it, every commercial for Luna, the carpet and flooring behemoth, is annoying. I thought the one with the bald guy dancing with a flooring sample atop his head was the absolute low point in the history of commercial advertising.
But I was wrong.
The absolute low point is the current Luna commercial that features a young, punked-out guy turning on a light switch and shouting "We got fluorescent lights! Make the carpet really pop!"
Then he shines the light in the face of Little Miss Luna, or whoever she is, the cheery, earnest brunette spokesperson who pretends to be blinded with permanent cornea damage.
Please, MASN. Make this commercial go away. Or if that's not possible, at least play it a few hundred times less during each Orioles broadcast.
Hard on the heels of the Luna spot for most annoying is the Southwest commercial featuring two pilots -- I'm going out on a limb here and saying they're brothers -- standing in the center aisle of a plane, yapping to everyone around them about how great non-stop travel.
Me, I'd pay $500 extra for a flight if MASN could guarantee that we never see that commercial again during an O's game.
On the other hand, one of the funniest new commercials during Orioles broadcasts is the GEICO spot that asks "Does a former drill sergeant make a terrible therapist?"
If you haven't seen this yet -- you can watch it here -- it's absolutely hysterical. As a patient lies on his coach spouting whiny pronouncements like "And that's why yellow always makes me sad, I think," the drill-sergeant-turned-shrink explodes.
"YOU KNOW WHAT MAKE ME SAD? YOU DO! MAYBE WE SHOULD CHUG ON OVER TO NAMY-PAMBY LAND WHERE WE CAN GET SOME SELF-CONFIDENCE FOR YOU, YOU JACK-WAGON!"
When his startled patient looks as if he's about to cry, the DI-shrink holds out a box of Kleenex and says gently: "Tissue?"
Except then he tosses the tissue across the room and calls the guy: "Crybaby."
Now that one I could watch for nine innings in a row -- at least until I get sick of it in a few days.
Compared to the Luna and Southwest spots, though, it's high art.

Comments
When you said bad Orioles commercials on MASN, I thought you were going to talk about the O's or Nats promo spots. They are the limit in cheesiness.
The commercials you mentioned are created, sold, and placed by various agencies, so MASN programmers really doesn't have a say in what the ads are or where they go, it's in the hands of the traffic department. But they represent the bottom of the barrel. More examples of how the media thinks the audience is full of brain dead automatons.
Yup, R. Lee Ermey is a hoot. You can almost see him as the DI in "Full Metal Jacket." Would have been great if they could have gotten Pvt. Pyle or Pvt. Snowflake to be the guy on the coach.
That one might be the only Geico commercial that doesn't make me go running from the room in an hysterical fit. All the other Geico commercials are incredibly annoying, matched only by the Progressive ones with Flo. Oy Vey. The Luna ads are a direct takeoff on the MAC vs. PC spots, which also set a new low. And Southwest spots with the baggage handlers doing a conga line about luggage traveling free are also to be avoided.
Whenever one of these comes on, I switch to another channel. I can't stand them.

Kevin, you must have missed the HH Gregg commercial with the mascot singing a horrible jingle to the tune of "Deck the Halls". He's promoting HH Gregg's Christmas in July sale. It's awful. "H H H H H H H H Greeeeggg!" That trumps every one you've mentioned for worst commercial. My fiance and I watched most of the games over the weekend and we both remarked that HH Gregg must be the only sponsor. That commercial must have run every half inning. Simply brutal.

How about the HHGregg Christmas in July commercial? I HAVE to hit the mute button for that one and they play it at least every commerical break.
I'm glad HHGregg is keeping Peter's pockets full, but that commercial is just downright annoying!

Concerning the MASN promos about the actual teams on MASN -- does anyone else find it difficult to watch the "defining moments" commercials? NEITHER team has had a true defining moment since the network began. They both stink!

I, too, thought you’d talk about the Orioles and Nationals spots. ... The worst is, “If you throw it fast, it’s going to leave fast.” They really ought to avoid using that spot on games Jeremy Guthrie pitches.
On the other end of the spectrum, you don't even mention the best of the new Geico spots: “Was Abe Lincoln really honest?” The spot opens with a, uh ... “plump” Mary Lincoln asking her husband, “Does this make my backside look big.” After about 20 seconds of incredible awkwardness, Abe finally stammers, “Perhaps,” leading her to storm from the room.
The effects guys did a nice job with grainy-looking film that appears like it COULD be from the mid-1800s.

I thought you were referring to those crummy commercials about the ball coming in at 95 MPH and going out even faster.

I agree that i thought you were talking about the god awful oriole and natioal promo's on masn. If anything has to go its them i turn the channel everytime one come on, they are completely unwatchable.
Posted by: rich | July 12, 2010 2:27 PM
yeah, the HHGregg one is the only spot that makes me hit mute. worst ever...christmas in July....stop it!
And I'm still puzzled why Matt Wieters is pictured during the All Star promos...what's with that? (and Miggy...he's not even wearing the right #...what gives?)
Posted by: paulie | July 12, 2010 2:34 PM
I also thought the rant would be about the Orioles promotional commercials. Don't get me wrong - I don't care for the Luna adds.........but the O's promotional add - TERRIBLE! Who in their right mind thinks they aren't embarrassing, and makes the so called people of Baltimore look like a bunch of idiots. That was rhetorical boys.

My all time favorite commercial on MASN is the one they are highlighting Markakis. One shot they show is him hitting a HR and you can see 1 person sitting in the stands along the 3rd baseline and LF.
Posted by: PSURavens | July 12, 2010 2:45 PM
Kevin - I agree that MASN needs to give us a break with the bad commercials, but you missed a few.
- HH Greg Christmas in July
- Geico "GOOOOAAAALLLL"
- The MASN commercials with New Yorkers talking about the O's, (ie 6'5" 235... fuuget about it)
- Maximum [insert player here] (most notably Izuturis)
- Defining moments commercials, they pick the most obscure stats and players for these. And the last one I saw had stats for Longoria from a month ago, really can't update that?

For those of us out of towners who watch on mlb.tv, I don't get commercials, just a break in progress screen, thats better to watch then these ads it sounds like!
Posted by: Matt P. | July 12, 2010 3:32 PM
Ermey WAS the drill instructor in full metal jacket.
Posted by: jaggezz | July 12, 2010 3:36 PM
I think the goofy guy on the Luna spots is supposed to be the Empire Carpet guy who they are trying to make fun of.
Z, I thought your story was going to be about bad spots promoting MASN. How many times am I going to have to hear "every pitch in HD..." shouted at me when it's patently not true.
As a DirecTV subscriber, MASN1 barely qualifies as being in HD -- and to boot, it is presented in a shrunk box with that garish graphic frame. MASN2 is no where close to HD. It's absolutely absurd to try and tell viewers otherwise.
I don't know if Comcast or Verizon customers get more bandwidth dedicated to MASN2, but I don't subscribe to those carriers and really only care what I see on DirecTV 641. Come on MASN! Fix the issue or drop the phony claims.

Because I view the games through mlb.com, I am spared the commercials. But please... the commentators. Other than Jim Palmer, they are awful. Palmer illuminates the game, criticizing pitch selection while enlightening the listener about pitching philosophy. The others... Mike Flanagan (this weekend) just rambles, providing no insight. Give me somebody with a working brain...

The Luna commercials are the most moronic, brainless garbage I have ever seen. It makes me lose faith in the human race that anyone was paid to make these idiotic pieces of garbage. May God have mercy on their souls.
Posted by: Groundskeeper | July 12, 2010 4:00 PM
Well, let's not wallow in the negative, although I must agree that the Luna commercial is from hunger.
However, Geico car nsurance has two of the great commercials ever.....
1. "Honest" Abe Lincoln goes through angst-ridden torture to prove his honesty after his wife asks him if her new dress makes her butt look big.
2. That famous super-hyper Spanish or South American soccer announcer making a game of chess exciting.
Granted, they are "You had to be there" ads which lose something in translation if you are only reading these descriptions, but if you catch one, don't miss it and you will agree.

I don't know...the Luna woman is growing on me, she is getting hotter by the day1

Commercials! Who watches commercials?
Posted by: JonathanTuttle | July 12, 2010 4:36 PM
TV commercials are usually up to the standards of the programming. So it makes sense that you would find the commercials annoying during televised O's games.

"I want to be Luke Scott's bat!"
Posted by: Jeff | July 12, 2010 4:54 PM
All of the HHGregg commercials are horrible.
Posted by: eicholtz | July 12, 2010 4:56 PM
also among the worst by far is the chair lift commercial which is on 50 times an hour! I keep watching it because I'm hoping it changes and one of them falls down the stairs!!
Posted by: OrioleEd5 | July 12, 2010 5:11 PM
The reason you see so many MASN commericials is they have not sold spots to paying advertisers.
Posted by: joefoss | July 12, 2010 5:11 PM
What about those actual O's commercials with the over zealous fans. I think those are the worse, and they have control over them. I hate those stupid things.
Posted by: gueman | July 12, 2010 5:31 PM
You obviously didn't major in advertising in college. The very fact that you have written a blog about these "bad" commercials proves the point that they are effective. Any reaction is a plus and you have further called attention to their products.
Posted by: O's Fan | July 12, 2010 5:47 PM
I agree with Jason abut "what" defining moments for either team. Now a real interesting question. Would the best players from the O's and the best players from the Nat's make a competitive team?
Posted by: gardener57 | July 12, 2010 6:51 PM
Hey, at least they're playing product commercials! There was a time not too long ago where the only commercials you would see between innings were self-promoting MASN commercials. I'm not a marketing whiz, but those commercials couldn't have been making them any money. Hopefully the O's will put a better product on the field so advertisers will start lining up for spots.
Posted by: The Commuter | July 12, 2010 7:34 PM
I have to join the previous comments about the O's and Nats' spots. I thought those were the ones you were going to criticize. Do we really need to talk about the "defining moments" for clubs with these records? Ugh!!!

Adam Jones. He can ____ and chew gum. And chew gum. And chew gum.
Posted by: Tyler | July 12, 2010 8:43 PM
Ravens and Orioles should have their station and NEW broadcasters and the Nationals should have theirs. You see the Redskins are playing that game. I know it's all about money for Angelos.
Posted by: mmjennusa | July 12, 2010 8:50 PM
I guess you are just jealous as MASN, unlike The Sun, still has advertisers.
Posted by: KenRowe | July 12, 2010 9:12 PM
He's got a cannon for an arm!
Third base is looking awfully good right now!
but I was interested to learn that Eva Longoria is hitting .214 off Guthrie and leads the Rays in several offensive categories (SMALL PRINT) as of 6-11-10.
WHO WILL OWN IT?
My guess is Nyger Morgan who is so cool about stealing second base.

As bad as the commercials are, listening to Thorne is even worse. I'd listen to the radio and watch the game but I don't like hearing what is going to happen two seconds before it shows up on TV. So I just keep the volume down all the time if Thorne is doing the game. He is AWFUL.
Posted by: Big Al | July 12, 2010 10:35 PM
With the first Luna commercial, I didn't even know what they did. I just knew that I hated Luna.
Posted by: Joe | July 12, 2010 11:22 PM
I thought this was about the commercials for the actual team. In which case, you probably want to 86 that one with the dancing dudes and the pointing kid and so on. It's so bad, it's good (more funny than good though), but now they run it so much it's gone right back to just plain bad.
Posted by: Kevin (Catonsville) | July 13, 2010 7:34 AM
I remember the MASN commercials. Then I decided to get rid of my cable and just listen to the games on the radio. The commercials aren't bad, you get to listen to some incredible broadcasters, and the best part is you don't have to pay for watching the O's.
Posted by: Mike | July 13, 2010 7:42 AM
Dear Kevin and Citizens,
WOW!! You really opened up a can of corn with this article!
Remember - commercials (money) talks... That's what counts... Citizens you don't. It's like a Politian – they can’t hear you until they need you.
Think about it citizens of the airways

Anyone still without TeVoe is living ion the DARK AGES! I NEVER watch live anything. I TeVoe every game and blister at Warp 3 or 4 right past ALL commercials, pitching changes etc. It's tough enough to watch the O's as is and sure as Hell ain't watching no stupid, Insepid, OVER & OVER commercials!! Get a new lease on TV life and GET TeVoe for Gods' sake!!!!
Posted by: SHOREMAN | July 13, 2010 1:08 PM
I have Verizon FIOS in Baltimore COunty, we get MASN, MASN2 and MASN2 HD. The Nationals are on MASN2 and MASN2 HD the O's fans are stuck without HD for most games. Its a rare treat when the O's are on MASN2 HD. The Luna chick is looking better all the time. The one that bums me out is the car place that competes with Carmax for buying used cars. The company is being investigated for scamming people. I guess we won't being seeing there commercials any longer. That is a shame because the chick they had as a spokes person was smokin' hot.
Posted by: Gragost | July 13, 2010 2:29 PM
I can't stand that wimpy song from the ATT blanket commercial.. I think that is played every inning.
Posted by: Tom | July 13, 2010 5:21 PM
go to you tube and search for "auto connection." those are the worst ever. hhgregg isn't far behind though, and unlike auto connection they probably pay more than $5 to make their commercials.

Finally, someone besides WNST has the cojones to say it...
Those commericals looks like they were filmed in a high school A/V room.

I find the luna commerical brunnette that appears with that idiot that places the carpet samples on his head is very attractive. I been trying to find out more info on her but can't find any. Does anyone know her name?
